David's dying exhortation to Solomon

1 Kings 2:1-4,10-12

As David’s life drew to its close he laid this charge on his son Solomon, ‘I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong and show yourself a man. Observe the injunctions of the Lord your God, following his ways and keeping his laws, his commandments, his customs and his decrees, as it stands written in the Law of Moses, that so you may be successful in all you do and undertake, so that the Lord may fulfil the promise he made me, “If your sons are careful how they behave, and walk loyally before me with all their heart and soul, you shall never lack for a man on the throne of Israel.”’

  So David slept with his ancestors and was buried in the Citadel of David. David’s reign over Israel lasted forty years: he reigned in Hebron for seven years, and in Jerusalem for thirty-three.

  Solomon was seated upon the throne of David, and his sovereignty was securely established.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவரின் வீட்டிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டுத் தமது சொந்த ஊருக்கு வந்தார். அவருடைய சீடரும் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தனர். ஓய்வுநாள் வந்தபோது அவர் தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் கற்பிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அதைக் கேட்ட பலர் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தனர். அவர்கள், “இவருக்கு இவையெல்லாம் எங்கிருந்து வந்தன? என்னே இவருக்கு அருளப்பட்டுள்ள ஞானம்! என்னே இவருடைய கைகளால் ஆகும் வல்ல செயல்கள்! இவர் தச்சர் அல்லவா! மரியாவின் மகன்தானே! யாக்கோபு, யோசே, யூதா, சீமோன் ஆகியோர் இவருடைய சகோதரர் அல்லவா? இவர் சகோதரிகள் இங்கு நம்மோடு இருக்கிறார்கள் அல்லவா?” என்றார்கள். இவ்வாறு அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள அவர்கள் தயங்கினார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “சொந்த ஊரிலும் சுற்றத்திலும் தம் வீட்டிலும் தவிர மற்றெங்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் மதிப்புப் பெறுவர்” என்றார். அங்கே உடல் நலமற்றோர் சிலர்மேல் கைகளை வைத்துக் குணமாக்கியதைத் தவிர, வேறு வல்ல செயல் எதையும் அவரால் செய்ய இயலவில்லை. அவர்களது நம்பிக்கையின்மையைக் கண்டு அவர் வியப்புற்றார். அவர் சுற்றிலுமுள்ள ஊர்களுக்குச் சென்று கற்பித்து வந்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

தாவீது அரசர் யோவாபையும் அவரோடிருந்த படைத்தலைவர்களையும் அழைத்து, “மக்கள் தொகை என்னவென்று நான் அறிய வேண்டும். நீங்கள் தாண் முதல் பெயேர்செபா வரை அனைத்து இஸ்ரயேல் குலங்களிடையே சென்று வீரர்கள் தொகையைக் கணக்கிடுங்கள்” என்றார். யோவாபு, வீரர்களின் தொகைக் கணக்கை அரசரிடம் தந்தார். வாளை ஏந்தும் வீரர்கள் எண்ணூறு ஆயிரம் பேர் இஸ்ரயேலிலும், ஐந்நூறு ஆயிரம் பேர் யூதாவிலும் இருந்தனர்.

வீரர்களின் தொகையைக் கணக்கெடுத்த பிறகு தாவீது மனம் வருந்தினார். “நான் மாபெரும் பாவம் செய்தேன்! ஆண்டவரே! உம் அடியானின் குற்றத்தை மன்னித்தருளும்! ஏனெனில் நான் பெரும் மதியீனனாய் நடந்து கொண்டேன்” என்று தாவீது ஆண்டவரிடம் மன்றாடினார். தாவீது காலையில் எழுந்தார். தாவீதின் திருக்காட்சியாளராகிய இறைவாக்கினர் காதிற்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது: “நீ சென்று இவ்வாறு ஆண்டவர் கூறுவதாகத் தாவீதிடம் சொல்: ‘நான் உன்மீது மூன்று தண்டனைகளைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறேன். நீ ஒன்றைத் தேர்ந்தெடு. அதன்படி நான் செய்வேன்’ ”.

காது தாவீதிடம் வந்து அவரிடம் பேசி வெளிப்படுத்தியது: “உனது நாட்டில் ஏழு ஆண்டுகள் பஞ்சம் வரட்டுமா? உன் எதிரிகள் உன்னைப் பின்தொடர, மூன்று மாதங்கள் நீ தப்பியோட வேண்டுமா? அல்லது உன் நாட்டில் மூன்று நாள்கள் கொள்ளை நோய் ஏற்படலாமா? என்னை அனுப்பியவருக்கு நான் என்ன மறுமொழி சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்று சிந்தித்து முடிவுசெய்”. “நான் மிகவும் மனவேதனையுற்றுள்ளேன். ஆண்டவரது கையில் நாம் விழுவோம்; ஏனெனில் அவரது இரக்கம் பெரிது! மனிதரின் கையில் விழ வேண்டாம்” என்று தாவீது கூறினார்.

ஆண்டவர் காலைமுதல் குறித்த நேரம்வரை இஸ்ரயேலின் மீது கொள்ளைநோய் அனுப்பினார். தாண் முதல் பெயேர்செபாவரை எழுபதாயிரம் மக்கள் மாண்டனர். வானதூதர் எருசலேமை அழிப்பதற்காக அதன்மீது தம் கையை ஓங்கினார். ஆண்டவர் அத்தீமையைக் குறித்து மனம் வருந்தி மக்களை அழித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த வானதூதரை நோக்கி, “போதும்! உன் கையைக் கீழே போடு” என்றார். அப்போது ஆண்டவரின் தூதர், எபூசியன் அரவுனாவின் போரடிக்கும் களத்தருகே இருந்தார்.

மக்களை அழித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த ஆண்டவரின் தூதரைத் தாவீது கண்டபோது, அவர் ஆண்டவரை நோக்கி, “பாவம் செய்தவன் நானல்லவோ? தீச்செயல் புரிந்தவன் நானல்லவோ? இம்மந்தை எக்குற்றம் செய்தது? இப்போது உம் கை என்னையும் என் தந்தையின் வீட்டாரையும் வதைப்பதாக!” என்று கூறினார்.

'A prophet is only despised in his own country'

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 6:1-6 

Jesus went to his home town and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming of the sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, ‘Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?’ And they would not accept him. And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house’; and he could work no miracle there, though he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
