Solomon is unfaithful; the Lord moderates his wrath

A reading from the first book of Kings 11:29-32,12:19 

One day when Jeroboam had gone out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah of Shiloh accosted him on the road. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak; the two of them were in the open country by themselves. Ahijah took the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve strips, saying to Jeroboam, ‘Take ten strips for yourself, for thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel, “I am going to tear the kingdom from Solomon’s hand and give ten tribes to you. He shall keep one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.’

  And Israel has been separated from the House of David until the present day.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு புறப்பட்டுத் தீர் பகுதிக்குள் சென்றார். அங்கே அவர் ஒரு வீட்டிற்குள் போனார்; தாம் அங்கிருப்பது எவருக்கும் தெரியாதிருக்க வேண்டுமென்று விரும்பியும் அதை மறைக்க இயலவில்லை. உடனே பெண் ஒருவர் அவரைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டு உள்ளே வந்து, அவர் காலில் விழுந்தார். அவருடைய மகளைத் தீய ஆவி பிடித்திருந்தது. அவர் ஒரு கிரேக்கப் பெண்; சிரிய பெனிசிய இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர். அவர் தம் மகளிடமிருந்து பேயை ஓட்டிவிடுமாறு அவரை வேண்டினார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “முதலில் பிள்ளைகள் வயிறார உண்ணட்டும். பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய உணவை எடுத்து நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்குப் போடுவது முறையல்ல” என்றார். அதற்கு அப்பெண், “ஆம் ஐயா, ஆனாலும் மேசையின் கீழிருக்கும் நாய்க்குட்டிகள் சிறு பிள்ளைகள் சிந்தும் சிறு துண்டுகளைத் தின்னுமே” என்று பதிலளித்தார். அப்பொழுது இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் இப்படிச் சொன்னதால் போகலாம்; பேய் உம் மகளை விட்டு நீங்கிற்று” என்றார். அப்பெண் தம் வீடு திரும்பியதும் தம் பிள்ளை கட்டிலில் படுத்திருக்கிறதையும் பேய் ஓடிவிட்டதையும் கண்டார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

சாலமோன் முதுமை அடைந்தபோது, அவருடைய மனைவியர் அவர் இதயத்தை வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களைப் பின்பற்றும்படி மாற்றிவிட்டனர். அதனால் அவர் உள்ளம் தம் தந்தை தாவீதின் உள்ளத்தைப்போல் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவருக்கு முற்றிலும் பணிந்திருக்கவில்லை. சாலமோன் சீதோனியரின் தேவதையான அஸ்தரேத்தையும் அம்மோனியரின் அருவருப்பான மில்கோமையும் வழிபடலானார். இவ்வாறு சாலமோன், ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் தீயதெனப் பட்டதைச் செய்தார். தம் தந்தை தாவீது ஆண்டவரை முழுமையாகப் பின்பற்றியது போன்று அவர் செய்யவில்லை. சாலமோன் எருசலேமுக்கு எதிரில் இருந்த மலையில் மோவாபியரின் அருவருப்பான கெமோசுக்கும் அம்மோனியரின் அருவருப்பான மோலேக்குக்கும் தொழுகை மேடுகளைக் கட்டினார். இப்படியே தங்கள் தெய்வங்களுக்குத் தூபம் காட்டிப் பலியிடுவதற்காக, வேற்றினத்தாரான தம் மனைவியர் எல்லாருக்கும் சாலமோன் இவ்வாறு செய்து கொடுத்தார்.

ஆண்டவர் சாலமோன்மீது சினமுற்றார். ஏனெனில் தமக்கு இருமுறை காட்சியளித்திருந்த இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரிடமிருந்து அவர் இதயம் விலகிச் சென்றது. வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களைப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டாம் என்று ஆண்டவர் அவருக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டிருந்தும், அக்கட்டளையை அவர் கடைப்பிடிக்கவில்லை. ஆகையால் ஆண்டவர் சாலமோனை நோக்கி,

“நான் உன்னோடு செய்த உடன்படிக்கையையும், நான் உனக்கு விதித்த நியமங்களையும் மீறி, நீ இவ்வாறு நடந்துகொண்டதால் உன் அரசை உன்னிடமிருந்து பறித்து அதை உன் பணியாளனுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்போவது உறுதி. ஆயினும் உன் தந்தை தாவீதின் பொருட்டு, உன் காலத்தில் நான் இதைச் செய்யமாட்டேன். உன் மகன் கையினின்று அதைப் பறித்து விடுவேன். ஆயினும் அரசு முழுவதையும் பறித்துவிடாமல், என் அடியான் தாவீதின் பொருட்டும் நான் தேர்ந்து கொண்ட எருசலேமின் பொருட்டும் ஒரு குலத்தை உன் மகனிடம் விட்டுவைப்பேன்” என்றார்.

The astuteness of the Syro-Phoenician woman

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 7:24-30 

Jesus left Gennesaret and set out for the territory of Tyre. There he went into a house and did not want anyone to know he was there, but he could not pass unrecognised. A woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him straightaway and came and fell at his feet. Now the woman was a pagan, by birth a Syrophoenician, and she begged him to cast the devil out of her daughter. And he said to her, ‘The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ But she spoke up: ‘Ah yes, sir,’ she replied ‘but the house-dogs under the table can eat the children’s scraps.’ And he said to her, ‘For saying this, you may go home happy: the devil has gone out of your daughter.’ So she went off to her home and found the child lying on the bed and the devil gone.

They are happy who do what is right,

But instead they mingled with the nations

  and learned to act as they did.

They worshipped the idols of the nations

  and these became a snare to entrap them.

They even offered their own sons

  and their daughters in sacrifice to demons,

till his anger blazed against his people;

  he was filled with horror at his chosen ones.

For the sake of my servant David, I will leave you one tribe

A reading from the first book of Kings 11: 4-13

When Solomon grew old his wives swayed his heart to other gods; and his heart was not wholly with the Lord his God as his father David’s had been. Solomon became a follower of Astarte, the goddess of the Sidonians, and of Milcom, the Ammonite abomination. He did what was displeasing to the Lord, and was not a wholehearted follower of the Lord, as his father David had been. Then it was that Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the god of Moab on the mountain to the east of Jerusalem, and to Milcom the god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who offered incense and sacrifice to their gods.

  The Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart had turned from the Lord the God of Israel who had twice appeared to him and who had then forbidden him to follow other gods; but he did not carry out the Lord’s order. The Lord therefore said to Solomon, ‘Since you behave like this and do not keep my covenant or the laws I laid down for you, I will most surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants. For your father David’s sake, however, I will not do this during your lifetime, but will tear it out of your son’s hands. Even so, I will not tear the whole kingdom from him. For the sake of my servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen, I will leave your son one tribe.’
