God's wrath and mercy are revealed in the exile and release of his people

A reading from the second book of Chronicles 36: 14-16,19-23

All the heads of the priesthood, and the people too, added infidelity to infidelity, copying all the shameful practices of the nations and defiling the Temple that the Lord had consecrated for himself in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, tirelessly sent them messenger after messenger, since he wished to spare his people and his house. But they ridiculed the messengers of God, they despised his words, they laughed at his prophets, until at last the wrath of the Lord rose so high against his people that there was no further remedy.

  Their enemies burned down the Temple of God, demolished the walls of Jerusalem, set fire to all its palaces, and destroyed everything of value in it. The survivors were deported by Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon; they were to serve him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power. This is how the word of the Lord was fulfilled that he spoke through Jeremiah, ‘Until this land has enjoyed its sabbath rest, until seventy years have gone by, it will keep sabbath throughout the days of its desolation.’

  And in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfil the word of the Lord that was spoken through Jeremiah, the Lord roused the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation and to have it publicly displayed throughout his kingdom: ‘Thus speaks Cyrus king of Persia, “The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; he has ordered me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem, in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all his people, may his God be with him! Let him go up.”’

அக்காலத்தில்

தாங்கள் நேர்மையானவர் என்று நம்பி மற்றவர்களை இகழ்ந்து ஒதுக்கும் சிலரைப் பார்த்து இயேசு இந்த உவமையைச் சொன்னார்:

“இருவர் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டக் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்றனர். ஒருவர் பரிசேயர், மற்றவர் வரிதண்டுபவர். பரிசேயர் நின்றுகொண்டு, இவ்வாறு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார்: ‘கடவுளே, நான் கொள்ளையர், நேர்மையற்றோர், விபசாரர் போன்ற மற்ற மக்களைப் போலவோ இந்த வரிதண்டுபவரைப் போலவோ இல்லாதது பற்றி உமக்கு நன்றி செலுத்துகிறேன்; வாரத்தில் இரு முறை நோன்பிருக்கிறேன்; என் வருவாயில் எல்லாம் பத்திலொரு பங்கைக் கொடுக்கிறேன்.’

ஆனால் வரிதண்டுபவர் தொலையில் நின்றுகொண்டு, வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்க்கக்கூடத் துணியாமல் தம் மார்பில் அடித்துக் கொண்டு, ‘கடவுளே, பாவியாகிய என்மீது இரங்கியருளும்’ என்றார்.”

இயேசு, “பரிசேயரல்ல, வரிதண்டுபவரே கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகி வீடு திரும்பினார். ஏனெனில் தம்மைத் தாமே உயர்த்துவோர் தாழ்த்தப் பெறுவர்; தம்மைத் தாமே தாழ்த்துவோர் உயர்த்தப் பெறுவர் என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 18: 9-14

Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else: ‘Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, “I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get.” The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven; but he beat his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This man, I tell you, went home again at rights with God; the other did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’

What I want is love, not sacrifice and holocausts

A reading from the book of Hosea 5: 15-6:6 

The Lord says this :  

They will search for me in their misery.

‘Come, let us return to the Lord.

He has torn us to pieces, but he will heal us;

he has struck us down, but he will bandage our wounds;

after a day or two he will bring us back to life,

on the third day he will raise us

and we shall live in his presence.

Let us set ourselves to know the Lord;

that he will come is as certain as the dawn

his judgement will rise like the light,

he will come to us as showers come,

like spring rains watering the earth.’

What am I to do with you, Ephraim?

What am I to do with you, Judah?

This love of yours is like a morning cloud,

like the dew that quickly disappears.

This is why I have torn them to pieces by the prophets,

why I slaughtered them with the words from my mouth,

since what I want is love, not sacrifice;

knowledge of God, not holocausts.
