We are all to come to unity, fully mature in the knowledge of the Son of God

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Ephesians 4:1-13 

Brothers and sisters,

I, a prisoner for the Lord,

urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,

with all humility and gentleness, with patience,

bearing with one another through love,

striving to preserve the unity of the spirit

through the bond of peace:

one body and one Spirit,

as you were also called to the one hope of your call;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

one God and Father of all,

who is over all and through all and in all.

But grace was given to each of us

according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 

Therefore, it says:

    He ascended on high and took prisoners captive;

    he gave gifts to men.

What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended

into the lower regions of the earth?

The one who descended is also the one who ascended

far above all the heavens,

that he might fill all things.

And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets,

others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers,

to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry,

for building up the body of Christ,

until we all attain to the unity of faith

and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature to manhood,

to the extent of the full stature of Christ.

Jesus was lifted up while they looked on.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 1:1-11

In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. ‘It is’ he had said ‘what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’

Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.’

As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, ‘Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.’

பவுல் சிறிது காலம் அந்தியோக்கியாவில் செலவிட்டபின் அங்கிருந்து புறப்பட்டு ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாகக் கலாத்தியா, பிரிகியாப் பகுதிகள் வழியாகச் சென்று சீடர்கள் அனைவரையும் உறுதிப்படுத்தினார்.

அலக்சாந்திரியாவில் பிறந்த அப்பொல்லோ எனும் பெயருடைய யூதர் ஒருவர் எபேசு வந்தடைந்தார். அவர் சொல்வன்மை மிக்கவர்; மறைநூல்களில் புலமை வாய்ந்தவர். ஆண்டவரின் நெறிகளைக் கற்றறிந்தவர்; ஆர்வம்மிக்க உள்ளத்தோடு இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய செய்தியைப் பிழையற அறிவித்தும் கற்பித்தும் வந்தார். ஆனால் அவர் யோவான் கொடுத்த திருமுழுக்கை மட்டுமே அறிந்திருந்தார். அவர் தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் துணிவுடன் பேசத் தொடங்கினார். அவர் பேசியதைக் கேட்ட பிரிஸ்கில்லாவும் அக்கில்லாவும் அவரை அழைத்துக் கொண்டுபோய், கடவுளின் நெறியைத் திட்டவட்டமாக விளக்கினர்.

அவர் அக்காயாவுக்குப் போக விரும்பியபோது சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள் அவரை ஊக்கப்படுத்தி, அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுமாறு சீடருக்குக் கடிதம் எழுதினார்கள். அவர் அங்கே சென்றபோது இறையருளால் ஆண்டவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டிருந்தவர்களுக்குப் பெரிதும் துணையாய் இருந்தார். ஏனெனில் அவர் வெளிப்படையாகவும் சிறப்பாகவும் யூதர்களிடம் வாதாடி, ‘இயேசுவே மெசியா’ என மறைநூல்களின்மூலம் எடுத்துக் காட்டினார்.

The Father loves you for loving me and believing that I came from God

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 16: 23-28 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘I tell you most solemnly,

anything you ask for from the Father he will grant in my name.

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.

Ask and you will receive, and so your joy will be complete.

I have been telling you all this in metaphors,

the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in metaphors;

but tell you about the Father in plain words.

When that day comes you will ask in my name;

and I do not say that I shall pray to the Father for you,

because the Father himself loves you for loving me

and believing that I came from God.

I came from the Father and have come into the world

and now I leave the world to go to the Father.’
