I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, and its power

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 20: 28-38 

Paul addressed these words to the elders of the church of Ephesus:

  ‘Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you the overseers, to feed the Church of God which he bought with his own blood. I know quite well that when I have gone fierce wolves will invade you and will have no mercy on the flock. Even from your own ranks there will be men coming forward with a travesty of the truth on their lips to induce the disciples to follow them. So be on your guard, remembering how night and day for three years I never failed to keep you right, shedding tears over each one of you. And now I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace that has power to build you up and to give you your inheritance among all the sanctified.

  ‘I have never asked anyone for money or clothes; you know for yourselves that the work I did earned enough to meet my needs and those of my companions. I did this to show you that this is how we must exert ourselves to support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, who himself said, “There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.”’

  When he had finished speaking he knelt down with them all and prayed. By now they were all in tears; they put their arms round Paul’s neck and kissed him; what saddened them most was his saying they would never see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “என் தந்தை என்மீது அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளது போல நானும் உங்கள்மீது அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளேன். என் அன்பில் நிலைத்திருங்கள். நான் என் தந்தையின் கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப்பிடித்து அவரது அன்பில் நிலைத்திருப்பது போல நீங்களும் என் கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப்பிடித்தால் என் அன்பில் நிலைத்திருப்பீர்கள். என் மகிழ்ச்சி உங்களுள் இருக்கவும் உங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சி நிறைவு பெறவுமே இவற்றை உங்களிடம் சொன்னேன்.

நான் உங்களிடம் அன்பு கொண்டிருப்பது போல நீங்களும் ஒருவர் மற்றவரிடம் அன்புகொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே என் கட்டளை. தம் நண்பர்களுக்காக உயிரைக் கொடுப்பதை விடச் சிறந்த அன்பு யாரிடமும் இல்லை. நான் கட்டளை இடுவதையெல்லாம் நீங்கள் செய்தால் நீங்கள் என் நண்பர்களாய் இருப்பீர்கள்.

இனி நான் உங்களைப் பணியாளர் என்று சொல்ல மாட்டேன். ஏனெனில் தம் தலைவர் செய்வது இன்னது என்று பணியாளருக்குத் தெரியாது. உங்களை நான் நண்பர்கள் என்றேன்; ஏனெனில் என் தந்தையிடமிருந்து நான் கேட்டவை அனைத்தையும் உங்களுக்கு அறிவித்தேன்.

நீங்கள் என்னைத் தேர்ந்து கொள்ளவில்லை; நான்தான் உங்களைத் தேர்ந்துகொண்டேன். நீங்கள் கனி தரவும், நீங்கள் தரும் கனி நிலைத்திருக்கவும் உங்களை ஏற்படுத்தினேன். ஆகவே நீங்கள் என் பெயரால் தந்தையிடம் கேட்பதையெல்லாம் அவர் உங்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பார்.

நீங்கள் ஒருவர் மற்றவரிடம் அன்புகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பதே என் கட்டளை.”

சீட்டு மத்தியா பெயருக்கு விழவே அவர் பதினொரு திருத்தூதர்களோடும் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார்.

திருத்தூதர் பணிகள் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 15-17, 20-26

ஒரு நாள், ஏறக்குறைய நூற்றிருபது சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள் ஒரே இடத்தில் கூடியிருக்கும்போது பேதுரு அவர்கள் நடுவே எழுந்து நின்று கூறியது: “அன்பர்களே, இயேசுவைக் கைது செய்தவர்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டிய யூதாசைக் குறித்துத் தூய ஆவியார் தாவீதின் வாயிலாக முன்னுரைத்த மறைநூல் வாக்கு நிறைவேறவேண்டியிருந்தது. அவன் நம்மில் ஒருவனாய் எண்ணப்பட்டு நாம் ஆற்றும் பணியில் பங்கு பெற்றிருந்தான்.

திருப்பாடல்கள் நூலில், ‘அவன் வீடு பாழாவதாக! அதில் எவரும் குடிபுகாதிருப்பாராக!’ என்றும் ‘அவனது பதவியை வேறொருவர் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளட்டும்!’ என்றும் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஆகையால் ஆண்டவர் இயேசுவின் உயிர்த்தெழுதலுக்குச் சாட்சியாய் விளங்க, அவர் நம்மிடையே செயல்பட்ட காலத்தில் நம்மோடு இருந்த ஒருவரைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ள நாம் கூடிவரவேண்டியது தேவையாயிற்று. யோவான் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்துவந்த காலமுதல் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு நம்மிடமிருந்து விண்ணேற்றமடைந்த நாள்வரை அவர் நம்மோடு இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.”

அத்தகையோருள் இருவரை முன்னிறுத்தினார்கள். ஒருவர் யோசேப்பு என்னும் பெயர் கொண்ட பர்சபா. இவருக்கு யுஸ்து என்னும் பெயரும் உண்டு. மற்றவர் மத்தியா.

பின்பு அவர்கள் அனைவரும், “ஆண்டவரே, அனைவரின் உள்ளங்களையும் அறிபவரே, யூதாசு திருத்தொண்டையும் திருத்தூதுப் பணியையும் விட்டகன்று தனக்குரிய இடத்தை அடைந்துவிட்டான். அந்த யூதாசுக்குப் பதிலாக யாரைத் தெரிந்தெடுக்க வேண்டும் என இந்த இருவருள் ஒருவரை எங்களுக்குக் காண்பியும்” என்று இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக்கொண்டனர்.

அதன்பின் அவர்கள் சீட்டுக் குலுக்கினார்கள். சீட்டு மத்தியா பெயருக்கு விழவே அவர் பதினொரு திருத்தூதர்களோடும் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்பட்டார்.

You are my friends if you do what I command you

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 15: 9-17 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘As the Father has loved me,

so I have loved you.

Remain in my love.

If you keep my commandments

you will remain in my love,

just as I have kept my Father’s commandments

and remain in his love.

I have told you this

so that my own joy may be in you

and your joy be complete.

This is my commandment:

love one another, as I have loved you.

A man can have no greater love

than to lay down his life for his friends.

You are my friends,

if you do what I command you.

I shall not call you servants any more,

because a servant does not know

his master’s business;

I call you friends,

because I have made known to you

everything I have learnt from my Father.

You did not choose me:

no, I chose you;

and I commissioned you

to go out and to bear fruit,

fruit that will last;

and then the Father will give you

anything you ask him in my name.

What I command you

is to love one another.’

'Let someone else take his office'

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 1: 15-17, 20-26 

One day Peter stood up to speak to the brothers – there were about a hundred and twenty persons in the congregation: ‘Brothers, the passage of scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretells the fate of Judas, who offered himself as a guide to the men who arrested Jesus – after having been one of our number and actually sharing this ministry of ours. Now in the Book of Psalms it says:

Let his camp be reduced to ruin,

Let there be no one to live in it.

And again:

Let someone else take his office.

‘We must therefore choose someone who has been with us the whole time that the Lord Jesus was travelling round with us, someone who was with us right from the time when John was baptising until the day when he was taken up from us – and he can act with us as a witness to his resurrection.’

  Having nominated two candidates, Joseph known as Barsabbas, whose surname was Justus, and Matthias, they prayed, ‘Lord, you can read everyone’s heart; show us therefore which of these two you have chosen to take over this ministry and apostolate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place.’ They then drew lots for them, and as the lot fell to Matthias, he was listed as one of the twelve apostles.
