It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9: 9-13 

As Jesus was walking on, he saw a man named Matthew sitting by the customs house, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.

  While he was at dinner in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When he heard this he replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and learn the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. And indeed I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.’

A famine not of bread, but of hearing the word of the Lord

A Reading from the Book of Amos 8 : 4-6, 9-12 

Listen to this, you who trample on the needy

and try to suppress the poor people of the country,

you who say, ‘When will New Moon be over

so that we can sell our corn,

and sabbath, so that we can market our wheat?

Then by lowering the bushel, raising the shekel,

by swindling and tampering with the scales,

we can buy up the poor for money,

and the needy for a pair of sandals,

and get a price even for the sweepings of the wheat.’

That day – it is the Lord who speaks –

I will make the sun go down at noon,

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

I am going to turn your feasts into funerals,

all your singing into lamentation;

I will have your loins all in sackcloth,

your heads all shaved.

I will make it a mourning like the mourning for an only son,

as long as it lasts it will be like a day of bitterness.

See what days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks –

days when I will bring famine on the country,

a famine not of bread, a drought not of water,

but of hearing the word of the Lord.

They will stagger from sea to sea,

wander from north to east,

seeking the word of the Lord

and failing to find it.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு படகேறி மறு கரைக்குச் சென்று தம் சொந்த நகரை அடைந்தார். அப்பொழுது சிலர் முடக்குவாதமுற்ற ஒருவரைக் கட்டிலில் கிடத்தி அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். இயேசு அவர்களுடைய நம்பிக்கையைக் கண்டு முடக்குவாதமுற்றவரிடம், “மகனே, துணிவோடிரு, உம் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள் சிலர், “இவன் கடவுளைப் பழிக்கிறான்” என்று தமக்குள் சொல்லிக் கொண்டனர். அவர்களுடைய சிந்தனைகளை இயேசு அறிந்து அவர்களை நோக்கி, “உங்கள் உள்ளங்களில் நீங்கள் தீயன சிந்திப்பதேன்? ‘உன் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன’ என்பதா, ‘எழுந்து நட’ என்பதா, எது எளிது? மண்ணுலகில் பாவங்களை மன்னிக்க மானிட மகனுக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு என்பதை நீங்கள் அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்றார். எனவே அவர் முடக்குவாதமுற்றவரை நோக்கி, “நீ எழுந்து உன்னுடைய கட்டிலைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு வீட்டுக்குப் போ” என்றார். அவரும் எழுந்து தமது வீட்டுக்குப் போனார்.

இதைக் கண்ட மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினர் அச்சமுற்றனர். இத்தகைய அதிகாரத்தை மனிதருக்கு அளித்த கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தனர்.

அந்நாள்களில்

பெத்தேலின் குருவாகிய அமட்சியா என்பவன் இஸ்ரயேலின் அரசன் எரொபவாமுக்கு இவ்வாறு சொல்லி அனுப்பினான்: “இஸ்ரயேல் வீட்டாரிடையே ஆமோஸ் உமக்கு எதிராகச் சதி செய்கிறான். அவன் சொல்வதை எல்லாம் இந்த நாட்டால் தாங்கமுடியவில்லை. ஏனெனில், ‘எரொபவாம் வாளால் மடிவான்; அவனது நாட்டைவிட்டு இஸ்ரயேல் அடிமையாய்க் கொண்டு போகப்படும்’ என்று ஆமோஸ் சொல்லுகிறான்."

பின்பு அமட்சியா ஆமோசைப் பார்த்து, “காட்சி காண்பவனே, இங்கிருந்து போய்விடு; யூதாவின் நாட்டுக்கு ஓடிவிடு; அங்கே போய் இறைவாக்கு உரைத்து, உன் பிழைப்பைத் தேடிக்கொள். பெத்தேலில் இனி ஒருபோதும் இறைவாக்கு உரைக்காதே; ஏனெனில், இது அரசின் புனித இடம். அரசுக்குரிய இல்லம்” என்று சொன்னான்.

ஆமோஸ் அதற்கு மறுமொழியாக அமட்சியாவைப் பார்த்துக் கூறினார்: “நான் இறைவாக்கினன் இல்லை; இறைவாக்கினர் குழுவில் உறுப்பினனும் இல்லை; நான் ஆடு மாடு மேய்ப்பவன், காட்டு அத்திமரத் தோட்டக்காரன். ஆடுகள் ஓட்டிக்கொண்டுபோன என்னை ஆண்டவர் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து, ‘என் மக்களாகிய இஸ்ரயேலிடம் சென்று, இறைவாக்கு உரைத்திடு’ என்று அனுப்பினார்.

எனவே, இப்பொழுது ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கைக் கேள்: ‘இஸ்ரயேலுக்கு எதிராக இறைவாக்கு உரைக்காதே; ஈசாக்கின் வீட்டார்க்கு எதிராகப் பேசாதே’ என்று நீ சொல்கிறாய்! ஆண்டவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்: “உன் மனைவி நகரில் விலைமகளாய் இருப்பாள்; உன் புதல்வர் புதல்வியர் வாளால் மடிவர்; உன் நிலபுலம் பங்குபோட்டுக் கொள்ளப்படும், நீயோ புனிதமற்ற நாட்டிலே மாண்டு போவாய்; இஸ்ரயேல் தன் நாட்டுக்கு வெளியே அடிமையாகக் கொண்டு போகப்படும்.”

'Your sins are forgiven; get up and walk'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9: 1-8 

Jesus got in the boat, crossed the water and came to his own town. Then some people appeared, bringing him a paralytic stretched out on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘Courage, my child, your sins are forgiven.’ And at this some scribes said to themselves, ‘This man is blaspheming.’ Knowing what was in their minds Jesus said, ‘Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts? Now, which of these is easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he said to the paralytic – ‘get up, and pick up your bed and go off home.’ And the man got up and went home. A feeling of awe came over the crowd when they saw this, and they praised God for giving such power to men.

The Word of the Lord.
