Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn

A reading from the book of Joel 2: 12-18

‘Now, now – it is the Lord who speaks –

come back to me with all your heart,

fasting, weeping, mourning.’

Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn,

turn to the Lord your God again,

for he is all tenderness and compassion,

slow to anger, rich in graciousness,

and ready to relent.

Who knows if he will not turn again, will not relent,

will not leave a blessing as he passes,

oblation and libation

for the Lord your God?

Sound the trumpet in Zion!

Order a fast,

proclaim a solemn assembly,

call the people together,

summon the community,

assemble the elders,

gather the children,

even the infants at the breast.

Let the bridegroom leave his bedroom

and the bride her alcove.

Between vestibule and altar let the priests,

the ministers of the Lord, lament.

Let them say,

‘Spare your people, Lord!

Do not make your heritage a thing of shame,

a byword for the nations.

Why should it be said among the nations,

“Where is their God?”’

Then the Lord, jealous on behalf of his land,

took pity on his people.

அக்காலத்தில் பேதுரு இயேசுவிடம், ``பாரும், நாங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்டுவிட்டு உம்மைப் பின்பற்றியவர்களாயிற்றே'' என்று சொன்னார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, ``உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: என் பொருட்டும் நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டும் வீடுகளையோ, சகோதரர்களையோ, சகோதரிகளையோ, தாயையோ, தந்தையையோ, பிள்ளைகளையோ, நிலபுலங்களையோ விட்டுவிட்ட எவரும் இம்மையில் நூறு மடங்காக வீடுகளையும் சகோதரர்களையும் சகோதரிகளையும் தாயையும் நிலபுலங்களையும், இவற்றோடுகூட இன்னல்களையும் மறுமையில் நிலைவாழ்வையும் பெறாமல் போகார்.

முதன்மையானோர் பலர் கடைசி ஆவர்; கடைசியானோர் முதன்மை ஆவர்'' என்றார்.

அல்லேலூயா, அல்லேலூயா! தந்தையே, விண்ணுக்கும் மண்ணுக்கும் ஆண்டவரே, உம்மைப் போற்றுகிறேன். ஏனெனில் ஞானிகளுக்கும் அறிஞர்களுக்கும் இவற்றை மறைத்துக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தினீர். அல்லேலூயா.

திருச்சட்டத்தைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பது பல காணிக்கைகளைக் கொடுப்பதற்கு ஈடாகும்; கட்டளைகளைக் கருத்தில் கொள்வது நல்லுறவுப் பலி செலுத்துவதற்கு ஒப்பாகும்.

அன்புக்குக் கைம்மாறு செய்வது மாவுப் படையல் அளிப்பதற்கு இணையாகும். தருமம் செய்வது நன்றிப் பலி செலுத்துவதாகும்.

தீச்செயலை விட்டுவிடுதல் ஆண்டவருக்கு விருப்பமானது; அநீதியைக் கைவிடுதல் பாவக் கழுவாய்ப் பலியாகும்.

ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் வெறுங்கையோடு வராதே; கட்டளையை நிறைவேற்றவே பலிகளையெல்லாம் செலுத்து. நீதிமான்கள் காணிக்கைகளைச் செலுத்தும்போது பலிபீடத்தில் கொழுப்பு வழிந்தோட, உன்னத இறைவன் திருமுன் நறுமணம் எழுகிறது.

நீதிமான்களின் பலி ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளத்தக்கது; அதன் நினைவு என்றும் நீங்காது. ஆண்டவரைத் தாராளமாய் மாட்சிமைப்படுத்து; உன் உழைப்பின் முதற்கனிகளைக் கொடுப்பதில் கணக்குப் பார்க்காதே.

கொடை வழங்கும்போதெல்லாம் முகமலர்ச்சியோடு கொடு; பத்திலொரு பங்கை மகிழ்ச்சியோடு கடவுளுக்கு உரித்தாக்கு. உன்னத இறைவன் உனக்குக் கொடுத்திருப்பதற்கு ஏற்ப நீயும் அவருக்குக் கொடு.

உன்னால் முடிந்த அளவுக்குத் தாராளமாய்க் கொடு. ஆண்டவரே கைம்மாறு செய்பவர்; ஏழு மடங்கு உனக்குத் திருப்பித் தருபவர்.

ஆண்டவருக்குக் கையூட்டுக் கொடுக்க எண்ணாதே. அவர் அதை ஏற்கமாட்டார். அநீத பலியில் நம்பிக்கை வைக்காதே. ஆண்டவர் நடுவராய் இருக்கிறார்; அவரிடம் ஒருதலைச் சார்பு என்பதே கிடையாது.

At that time Peter began to tell Jesus, ‘What about us? We have left everything and followed you.’ Jesus said, ‘I tell you solemnly, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not be repaid a hundred times over, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and land – not without persecutions – now in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life.

  ‘Many who are first will be last, and the last first.’

Give to the Most High as he has given to you

A reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus 35:2-15

A man multiplies offerings by keeping the Law; he offers communion sacrifices by following the commandments.By showing gratitude he makes an offering of fine flour, by giving alms he offers a sacrifice of praise. Withdraw from wickedness and the Lord will be pleased, withdraw from injustice and you make atonement. Do not appear empty-handed in the Lord’s presence; for all these things are due under the commandment.

A virtuous man’s offering graces the altar, and its savour rises before the Most High. A virtuous man’s sacrifice is acceptable,

its memorial will not be forgotten. Honour the Lord with generosity, do not stint the first-fruits you bring. Add a smiling face to all your gifts, and be cheerful as you dedicate your tithes. Give to the Most High as he has given to you,

generously as your means can afford; for the Lord is a good rewarder, he will reward you seven times over. Offer him no bribe, he will not accept it, do not put your faith in an unvirtuous sacrifice; since the Lord is a judge who is no respecter of personages.
