Why be envious because I am generous?

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 20:1-16

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

A reading from the book of Judges 9: 6-15 

And all the citizens of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimʹelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Geriʹzim, and cried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you. The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’ But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my fatness, by which gods and men are honored, and go to sway over the trees?’ And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come you, and reign over us.’ But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to sway over the trees?’ And the trees said to the vine, ‘Come you, and reign over us.’

But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine which cheers gods and men, and go to sway over the trees?’ Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come you, and reign over us.’ And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

செல்வர் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவதைவிட ஊசியின் காதில் ஒட்டகம் நுழைவது எளிது.

✠ மத்தேயு எழுதிய நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து வாசகம் 19: 23-30

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரிடம், “செல்வர் விண்ணரசில் புகுவது கடினம் என நான் உங்களுக்கு உறுதியாகச் சொல்கிறேன். மீண்டும் உங்களுக்குக் கூறுகிறேன்: செல்வர் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவதை விட ஊசியின் காதில் ஒட்டகம் நுழைவது எளிது” என்றார்.

சீடர்கள் இதைக் கேட்டு, “அப்படியானால் யார்தாம் மீட்புப் பெற முடியும்?” என்று கூறி மிகவும் வியப்படைந்தார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களைக் கூர்ந்து நோக்கி, “மனிதரால் இது இயலாது. ஆனால் கடவுளால் எல்லாம் இயலும்” என்றார்.

அதன் பின்பு பேதுரு இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து, “நாங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்டுவிட்டு உம்மைப் பின்பற்றியவர்களாயிற்றே; எங்களுக்கு என்ன கிடைக்கும்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “புதுப் படைப்பின் நாளில் மானிட மகன் தமது மாட்சிமிகு அரியணையில் வீற்றிருப்பார். அப்போது என்னைப் பின்பற்றிய நீங்களும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் பன்னிரு குலத்தவர்க்கும் நடுவர்களாய்ப் பன்னிரு அரியணைகளில் வீற்றிருப்பீர்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லுகிறேன். மேலும் என் பெயரின் பொருட்டு வீடுகளையோ, சகோதரர்களையோ, சகோதரிகளையோ, தந்தையையோ, தாயையோ, பிள்ளைகளையோ, நில புலங்களையோ விட்டுவிட்ட எவரும் நூறு மடங்காகப் பெறுவர். நிலை வாழ்வையும் உரிமைப் பேறாக அடைவர்.

ஆனால் முதன்மையானோர் பலர் கடைசியாவர். கடைசியானோர் பலர் முதன்மையாவர்” என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் ஓபிராவில் உள்ள ஒரு கருவாலி மரத்தடியில் வந்து அமர்ந்தார். அந்த மரம் அபியேசர் குடும்பத்தவரான யோவாசுக்குச் சொந்தமானது. அவர் மகன் கிதியோன், மிதியானியரிடமிருந்து கோதுமையை மறைப்பதற்காக, திராட்சை ஆலையில் கதிர்களை அடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவருக்குத் தோன்றி, “வலிமை மிக்க வீரனே! ஆண்டவர் உன்னோடு இருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.

கிதியோன் அவரிடம், “என் தலைவரே! ஆண்டவர் எம்மோடு இருக்கிறார் என்றால் ஏன் இவை எல்லாம் எமக்கு நேரிடுகின்றன? ஆண்டவர் எம்மை எகிப்து நாட்டிலிருந்து வெளியே கொண்டு வரவில்லையா என்று கூறி, எங்கள் தந்தையர் எமக்கு வியந்துரைத்த அவரது வியத்தகு செயல்களெல்லாம் எங்கே? இப்பொழுது ஏன் ஆண்டவர் எம்மை இப்படிக் கைவிட்டுவிட்டார்? எம்மை மிதியானியரின் கைகளில் ஒப்படைத்து விட்டாரே!” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவர் பக்கம் திரும்பி, “உன்னுடைய இதே ஆற்றலுடன் செல்வாய். மிதியானியர் கையிலிருந்து இஸ்ரயேலை நீ விடுவிப்பாய். உன்னை அனுப்புவது நான் அல்லவா?” என்றார். கிதியோன் அவரிடம், “என் தலைவரே! எவ்வழியில் நான் இஸ்ரயேலை விடுவிப்பேன்! இதோ! மனாசேயிலேயே நலிவுற்று இருப்பது என் குடும்பம். என் தந்தை வீட்டிலேயே நான்தான் சிறியவன்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவரிடம், “நான் உன்னோடு இருப்பதால் நீ தனி ஒரு ஆளாக மிதியானியரை வெல்வாய்” என்றார். கிதியோன், “உம் பார்வையில் எனக்குத் தயவு கிடைத்துள்ளது என்றால், நீர்தான் என்னுடன் பேசுகிறவர் என்பதற்கு அடையாளம் ஒன்று காட்டும். நான் உம்மிடம் திரும்பிவந்து எனது உணவுப் படையலைக் கொண்டு வந்து உம் திருமுன் வைக்கும்வரை இவ்விடத்தைவிட்டு அகலாதீர்” என்றார். அவரும், “நீ திரும்பும்வரை நான் இங்கேயே இருப்பேன்” என்றார்.

கிதியோன் வந்து ஆட்டுக் குட்டியையும், இருபது படி அளவுள்ள ஒரு மரக்கால் மாவால் புளியாத அப்பத்தையும் தயார் செய்தார். பிறகு அவர் இறைச்சியை ஒரு கூடையிலும், குழம்பை ஒரு சட்டியிலும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, அந்தக் கருவாலி மரத்தடிக்கு வந்து அவரிடம் கொடுத்தார். கடவுளின் தூதர் அவரிடம், “இறைச்சியையும் புளியாத அப்பத்தையும் கொண்டு வந்து இப்பாறை மீது வைத்துக் குழம்பை ஊற்று” என்றார். அவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்தார். ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் தம் கையிலிருந்த கோலின் முனையால் இறைச்சியையும் புளியாத அப்பத்தையும் தொட்டார். பாறையிலிருந்து நெருப்பு எழும்பி, இறைச்சியையும் புளியாத அப்பத்தையும் எரித்தது. ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவர் பார்வையிலிருந்து மறைந்தார்.

அப்போது கிதியோன் அவர் ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் என அறிந்து கொண்டார். கிதியோன், “ஐயோ! இவர் என் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவர்! ஆண்டவரின் தூதரை நேருக்கு நேராக நான் பார்த்துவிட்டேனே!” என்றார். ஆண்டவர் அவரிடம், “உனக்கு நலமே ஆகுக! அஞ்சாதே! நீ சாக மாட்டாய்” என்றார். கிதியோன் அங்கே ஆண்டவருக்கு ஒரு பலிபீடம் கட்டி எழுப்பினார். அதை ‘நலம் நல்கும் ஆண்டவர்’ என அழைத்தார். அது இந்நாள்வரை அபியேசர் குடும்பத்தவருக்குச் சொந்தமான ஓபிராவில் உள்ளது.

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 19:23-30 

And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Then Peter said in reply, “Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.
