All the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law

A reading from the book of Nehemiah 8 :1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12

In those days: All the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. The Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the meaning, so that the people understood the reading. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them, “Go on your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” And all the people went on their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 18:1-5 

The disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, ‘I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.’

Towards Jerusalem I send flowing peace, like a river

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 66:10-14 

Rejoice, Jerusalem,

be glad for her, all you who love her!

Rejoice, rejoice for her,

all you who mourned her!

That you may be suckled, filled,

from her consoling breast,

that you may savour with delight

her glorious breasts.

For thus says the Lord:

Now towards her I send flowing

peace, like a river,

and like a stream in spate

the glory of the nations.

At her breast will her nurslings be carried

and fondled in her lap.

Like a son comforted by his mother

will I comfort you.

And by Jerusalem you will be comforted.

At the sight your heart will rejoice,

and your bones flourish like the grass.

To his servants the Lord will reveal his hand.

அக்காலத்தில்,

சீடர்கள் இயேசுவை அணுகி, “விண்ணரசில் மிகப் பெரியவர் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர் ஒரு சிறு பிள்ளையை அழைத்து அவர்கள் நடுவில் நிறுத்தி, பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்: “நீங்கள் மனந்திரும்பிச் சிறு பிள்ளைகளைப்போல் ஆகாவிட்டால் விண்ணரசில் புகமாட்டீர்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். இந்தச் சிறு பிள்ளையைப்போலத் தம்மைத் தாழ்த்திக் கொள்பவரே விண்ணரசில் மிகப் பெரியவர். இத்தகைய சிறு பிள்ளை ஒன்றை என் பெயரால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவர் எவரும் என்னையே ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார்.”

எருசலேமின் மேல் அன்பு கொண்ட அனைவரும் அவளுடன் அகமகிழ்ந்து அவள் பொருட்டு அக்களியுங்கள்; அவளுக்காகப் புலம்பி அழும் எல்லாரும் அவளுடன் சேர்ந்து மகிழ்ந்து கொண்டாடி ஆர்ப்பரியுங்கள். அப்போது அவளின் ஆறுதல் அளிக்கும் முலைகளில் குடித்து நீங்கள் நிறைவடைவீர்கள்; அவள் செல்வப் பெருக்கில் நிறைவாக அருந்தி இன்பம் காண்பீர்கள்.

ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: ஆறுபோல் நிறைவாழ்வு பாய்ந்தோடச் செய்வேன்; பெருக்கெடுத்த நீரோடைபோல் வேற்றினத்தாரின் செல்வம் விரைந்து வரச் செய்வேன்; நீங்கள் பால் பருகுவீர்கள்; மார்பில் அணைத்துச் சுமக்கப்படுவீர்கள்; மடியில் வைத்துத் தாலாட்டப்படுவீர்கள். தாய் தன் பிள்ளையைத் தேற்றுவதுபோல் நான் உங்களைத் தேற்றுவேன்; எருசலேமில் நீங்கள் தேற்றப்படுவீர்கள்.

இதை நீங்கள் காண்பீர்கள், உங்கள் இதயம் மகிழ்ச்சி கொள்ளும், உங்கள் எலும்புகள் பசும்புல் போல் வளரும்; ஆண்டவர் தம் ஆற்றலைத் தம் ஊழியருக்குக் காட்டுவார்.
