Jonah flees from his call

A reading from the book of Jonah 1:1-2:1,11 

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish. And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

At that time: The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’, and it would obey you. Will any one of you who has a servant ploughing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterwards you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”

Never be ashamed of witnessing to our Lord

A Reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to Timothy 1:6-8,13-14 

Beloved: I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. அக்காலத்தில்

திருத்தூதர்கள் ஆண்டவரிடம், “எங்கள் நம்பிக்கையை மிகுதியாக்கும்” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு ஆண்டவர் கூறியது: “கடுகளவு நம்பிக்கை உங்களுக்கு இருந்தால் நீங்கள் இந்தக் காட்டு அத்தி மரத்தை நோக்கி, ‘நீ வேரோடே பெயர்ந்துபோய்க் கடலில் வேரூன்றி நில்’ எனக் கூறினால் அது உங்களுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியும்.

உங்கள் பணியாளர் உழுதுவிட்டோ மந்தையை மேய்த்துவிட்டோ வயல்வெளியிலிருந்து வரும்போது அவரிடம், ‘நீர் உடனே வந்து உணவருந்த அமரும்’ என்று உங்களில் எவராவது சொல்வாரா? மாறாக, ‘எனக்கு உணவு ஏற்பாடு செய்யும்; உம் இடையை வரிந்துகட்டிக் கொண்டு, நான் உண்டு குடிக்கும்வரை எனக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்யும்; அதன் பிறகு நீர் உண்டு குடிக்கலாம்’ என்று சொல்வாரல்லவா? தாம் பணித்ததைச் செய்ததற்காக அவர் தம் பணியாளருக்கு நன்றி கூறுவாரோ?

அது போலவே, நீங்களும் உங்களுக்குப் பணிக்கப்பட்ட யாவற்றையும் செய்தபின், ‘நாங்கள் பயனற்ற பணியாளர்கள்; எங்கள் கடமையைத்தான் செய்தோம்’ எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்.”

அன்பிற்குரியவரே,

உன்மீது என் கைகளை வைத்துத் திருப்பணியில் அமர்த்தியபோது உனக்குள் எழுந்த கடவுளின் அருள்கொடையினைத் தூண்டி எழுப்புமாறு நினைவுறுத்துகிறேன். கடவுள் நமக்குக் கோழை உள்ளத்தினை அல்ல, வல்லமையும் அன்பும் கட்டுப்பாடும் கொண்ட உள்ளத்தையே வழங்கியுள்ளார். எனவே நம் ஆண்டவருக்கு நீ சான்று பகர்வதைக் குறித்தோ அவர் பொருட்டு நான் கைதியாக இருப்பதைக் குறித்தோ வெட்கமடையத் தேவை இல்லை; கடவுளின் வல்லமைக்கேற்ப நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டுத் துன்பத்தில் என்னுடன் பங்குகொள்.

கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவிடம் நம்பிக்கையும் அன்பும் கொண்டு என்னிடம் நீ கேட்ட நலந்தரும் வார்த்தைகளை மேல்வரிச் சட்டமாகக் கொள். நமக்குள் குடிகொள்ளும் தூய ஆவியால் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்ட நல்ல போதனையைக் காத்துக்கொள்.
