Because of your crimes I will crush you into the ground

A Reading from the Book of Amos 2: 6-10,13-16 

The Lord says this:

For the three crimes, the four crimes, of Israel

I have made my decree and will not relent:

because they have sold the virtuous man for silver

and the poor man for a pair of sandals,

because they trample on the heads of ordinary people

and push the poor out of their path,

because father and son have both resorted to the same girl,

profaning my holy name,

because they stretch themselves out by the side of every altar

on clothes acquired as pledges,

and drink the wine of the people they have fined

in the house of their god...

Yet it was I who overthrew the Amorites when they attacked,

men tall as cedars and strong as oaks,

I who destroyed them,

both fruit above ground

and root below.

It was I who brought you out of the land of Egypt

and for forty years led you through the wilderness

to take possession of the Amorite’s country.

See then how I am going to crush you into the ground

as the threshing-sledge crushes when clogged by straw;

flight will not save even the swift,

the strong man will find his strength useless,

the mighty man will be powerless to save himself.

The bowman will not stand his ground,

the fast runner will not escape,

the horseman will not save himself,

the bravest warriors will run away naked that day.

It is the Lord who speaks.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு படகேறி, கடலைக் கடந்து மீண்டும் மறு கரையை அடைந்ததும் பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து கூடினர். அவர் கடற்கரையில் இருந்தார். தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவர்களுள் ஒருவரான யாயிர் என்பவர் வந்து, அவரைக் கண்டு அவரது காலில் விழுந்து, “என் மகள் சாகும் தறுவாயில் இருக்கிறாள். நீர் வந்து அவள்மீது உம் கைகளை வையும். அப்போது அவள் நலம் பெற்றுப் பிழைத்துக்கொள்வாள்” என்று அவரை வருந்தி வேண்டினார். இயேசுவும் அவருடன் சென்றார். பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் அவரை நெருக்கிக்கொண்டே பின்தொடர்ந்தனர்.

அப்போது பன்னிரு ஆண்டுகளாய் இரத்தப் போக்கினால் வருந்திய பெண் ஒருவர் அங்கு இருந்தார். அவர் மருத்துவர் பலரிடம் தமக்கு உள்ளதெல்லாம் செலவழித்தும் ஒரு பயனும் அடையாமல் மிகவும் துன்பப்பட்டவர். அவர் நிலைமை வரவர மிகவும் கேடுற்றது. அவர் இயேசுவைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டு, மக்கள் கூட்டத்துக்கிடையில் அவருக்குப் பின்னால் வந்து, அவரது மேலுடையைத் தொட்டார். ஏனெனில், “நான் அவருடைய ஆடையைத் தொட்டாலே நலம் பெறுவேன்” என்று அப்பெண் எண்ணிக்கொண்டார். தொட்ட உடனே அவருடைய இரத்தப்போக்கு நின்றுபோயிற்று. அவரும் தம் நோய் நீங்கி, நலம் பெற்றதைத் தம் உடலில் உணர்ந்தார்.

உடனே இயேசு தம்மிடமிருந்து வல்லமை வெளியேறியதைத் தம்முள் உணர்ந்து மக்கள் கூட்டத்தைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, “என் மேலுடையைத் தொட்டவர் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவருடைய சீடர்கள் அவரிடம், “இம்மக்கள் கூட்டம் உம்மைச் சூழ்ந்து நெருக்குவதைக் கண்டும், ‘என்னைத் தொட்டவர் யார்?’ என்கிறீரே!” என்றார்கள்.

ஆனால் அவர் தம் மேலுடையைத் தொட்டவரைக் காணும்படி சுற்றிலும் திரும்பிப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது அப்பெண் தமக்கு நேர்ந்ததை அறிந்தவராய், அஞ்சி நடுங்கிக்கொண்டு, அவர்முன் வந்து விழுந்து, நிகழ்ந்தது அனைத்தையும் அவரிடம் சொன்னார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “மகளே, உனது நம்பிக்கை உன்னைக் குணமாக்கிற்று. அமைதியுடன் போ. நீ நோய் நீங்கி நலமாயிரு” என்றார்.

அவர் தொடர்ந்து பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவருடைய வீட்டிலிருந்து ஆள்கள் வந்து, அவரிடம், “உம்முடைய மகள் இறந்துவிட்டாள். போதகரை ஏன் இன்னும் தொந்தரவு செய்கிறீர்?” என்றார்கள். அவர்கள் சொன்னது இயேசுவின் காதில் விழுந்ததும், அவர் தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவரிடம், “அஞ்சாதீர், நம்பிக்கையை மட்டும் விடாதீர்” என்று கூறினார். அவர் பேதுரு, யாக்கோபு, யாக்கோபின் சகோதரரான யோவான் ஆகியோரைத் தவிர வேறொருவரையும் தம்முடன் வரவிடவில்லை.

அவர்கள் தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவரின் வீட்டிற்குச் சென்றார்கள். அங்கே அமளியையும் மக்கள் அழுது ஓலமிட்டுப் புலம்புவதையும் இயேசு கண்டார். அவர் உள்ளே சென்று, “ஏன் இந்த அமளி? ஏன் இந்த அழுகை? சிறுமி இறக்கவில்லை, உறங்குகிறாள்” என்றார். அவர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து நகைத்தார்கள்.

ஆனால் அவர் அனைவரையும் வெளியேற்றிய பின், சிறுமியின் தந்தையையும் தாயையும் தம்முடன் இருந்தவர்களையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு, அச்சிறுமி இருந்த இடத்திற்குச் சென்றார். சிறுமியின் கையைப் பிடித்து அவளிடம், “தலித்தா கூம்” என்றார். அதற்கு, ‘சிறுமி, உனக்குச் சொல்லுகிறேன், எழுந்திடு’ என்பது பொருள். உடனே அச்சிறுமி எழுந்து நடந்தாள். அவள் பன்னிரண்டு வயது ஆனவள். மக்கள் பெரிதும் மலைத்துப்போய் மெய்ம்மறந்து நின்றார்கள். “இதை யாருக்கும் தெரிவிக்கக் கூடாது” என்று அவர் அவர்களுக்குக் கண்டிப்பாய்க் கட்டளையிட்டார்; அவளுக்கு உணவு கொடுக்கவும் சொன்னார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நம்பிக்கை, நாவன்மை, அறிவு, பேரார்வம் ஆகிய அனைத்தையும் மிகுதியாய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். எங்கள்மேல் நீங்கள் கொண்டுள்ள அன்பும் பெருகிக்கொண்டு வருகிறது. அதுபோல் இந்த அறப்பணியிலும் நீங்கள் முழுமையாய் ஈடுபடவேண்டும்.

நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் அருள்செயலை அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்களே! அவர் செல்வராய் இருந்தும் உங்களுக்காக ஏழையானார். அவருடைய ஏழ்மையினால் நீங்கள் செல்வராகுமாறு இவ்வாறு செய்தார்.

மற்றவர்களின் சுமையைத் தணிப்பதற்காக நீங்கள் துன்புற வேண்டும் என்று நாங்கள் சொல்லவில்லை. மாறாக, எல்லாரும் சமநிலையில் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்றே சொல்கிறோம். இப்பொழுது உங்களிடம் மிகுதியாய் இருக்கிறது; அவர்களுடைய குறையை நீக்குங்கள். அவ்வாறே அவர்களிடம் மிகுதியாக இருக்கும்போது உங்கள் குறையை நீக்குவார்கள். இவ்வாறு உங்களிடையே சமநிலை ஏற்படும். “மிகுதியாகச் சேகரித்தவருக்கு எதுவும் மிஞ்சவில்லை; குறைவாகச் சேகரித்தவருக்கும் எதுவும் குறைவுபடவில்லை” என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது அன்றோ!

சாவைக் கடவுள் உண்டாக்கவில்லை; வாழ்வோரின் அழிவில் அவர் மகிழ்வதில்லை. இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே அவர் அனைத்தையும் படைத்தார். உலகின் உயிர்கள் யாவும் நலம் பயப்பவை; அழிவைத் தரும் நஞ்சு எதுவும் அவற்றில் இல்லை; கீழுலகின் ஆட்சி மண்ணுலகில் இல்லை. நீதிக்கு இறப்பு என்பது இல்லை.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 5:21-43.

When Jesus had crossed in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered round him and he stayed by the lakeside. Then one of the synagogue officials came up, Jairus by name, and seeing him, fell at his feet and pleaded with him earnestly, saying, ‘My little daughter is desperately sick. Do come and lay your hands on her to make her better and save her life.’ Jesus went with him and a large crowd followed him; they were pressing all round him.

  Now there was a woman who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years; after long and painful treatment under various doctors, she spent all she had without being any the better for it, in fact, she was getting worse. She had heard about Jesus, and she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his cloak. ‘If I can touch even his clothes,’ she had told herself ‘I shall be well again.’ And the source of the bleeding dried up instantly, and she felt in herself that she was cured of her complaint. Immediately aware that power had gone out from him, Jesus turned round in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ His disciples said to him, ‘You see how the crowd is pressing round you and yet you say, “Who touched me?”’ But he continued to look all round to see who had done it. Then the woman came forward, frightened and trembling because she knew what had happened to her, and she fell at his feet and told him the whole truth. ‘My daughter,’ he said ‘your faith has restored you to health; go in peace and be free from your complaint.’

  While he was still speaking some people arrived from the house of the synagogue official to say, ‘Your daughter is dead: why put the Master to any further trouble?’ But Jesus had overheard this remark of theirs and he said to the official, ‘Do not be afraid; only have faith.’ And he allowed no one to go with him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. So they came to the official’s house and Jesus noticed all the commotion, with people weeping and wailing unrestrainedly. He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this commotion and crying? The child is not dead, but asleep.’ But they laughed at him. So he turned them all out and, taking with him the child’s father and mother and his own companions, he went into the place where the child lay. And taking the child by the hand he said to her, ‘Talitha, kum!’ which means, ‘Little girl, I tell you to get up.’ The little girl got up at once and began to walk about, for she was twelve years old. At this they were overcome with astonishment, and he ordered them strictly not to let anyone know about it, and told them to give her something to eat.

The Lord Jesus became poor for your sake, to make you rich.

A Reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to the  Corinthians 8: 7,9,13-15 

You always have the most of everything – of faith, of eloquence, of understanding, of keenness for any cause, and the biggest share of our affection – so we expect you to put the most into this work of mercy too. Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was: he was rich, but he became poor for your sake, to make you rich out of his poverty. This does not mean that to give relief to others you ought to make things difficult for yourselves: it is a question of balancing what happens to be your surplus now against their present need, and one day they may have something to spare that will supply your own need. That is how we strike a balance: as scripture says: The man who gathered much had none too much, the man who gathered little did not go short.
