'I know who you are: the Holy One of God'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 4: 31-37 

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because he spoke with authority.

  In the synagogue there was a man who was possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and it shouted at the top of its voice, ‘Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the devil, throwing the man down in front of everyone, went out of him without hurting him at all. Astonishment seized them and they were all saying to one another, ‘What teaching! He gives orders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.’ And reports of him went all through the surrounding countryside.

The Spirit reaches even the depths of God

A Reading from the First Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 2:10-16 

The Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God. Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gifts that he has given us. Therefore we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. An unspiritual person is one who does not accept anything of the Spirit of God: he sees it all as nonsense; it is beyond his understanding because it can only be understood by means of the Spirit. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is able to judge the value of everything, and his own value is not to be judged by other men. As scripture says: Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him? But we are those who have the mind of Christ.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள கப்பர்நாகும் ஊருக்குச் சென்று, ஓய்வு நாள்களில் மக்களுக்குக் கற்பித்து வந்தார். அவருடைய போதனையைக் குறித்து அவர்கள் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தார்கள்.

ஏனெனில் அவர் அதிகாரத்தோடு கற்பித்தார். தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் தீய ஆவியான பேய் பிடித்திருந்த ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவரைப் பிடித்திருந்த பேய், “ஐயோ! நாசரேத்து இயேசுவே, உமக்கு இங்கு என்ன வேலை? எங்களை ஒழித்துவிடவா வந்தீர்? நீர் யார் என எனக்குத் தெரியும். நீர் கடவுளுக்கு அர்ப்பணமானவர்” என்று உரத்த குரலில் கத்தியது.

“வாயை மூடு, இவரை விட்டு வெளியே போ” என்று இயேசு அதனை அதட்டினார். அப்பொழுது பேய் பிடித்தவரை அவர்கள் நடுவே விழச் செய்து, அவருக்கு ஒரு தீங்கும் இழைக்காமல் பேய் அவரை விட்டு வெளியேறிற்று.

எல்லாரும் திகைப்படைந்து, “எப்படிப் பேசுகிறார், பாருங்கள்! அதிகாரத் தோடும் வல்லமையோடும் தீய ஆவிகளுக்குக் கட்டளையிடுகிறார்; அவையும் போய்விடுகின்றனவே!” என்று ஒருவரோடு ஒருவர் பேசிக் கொண்டனர். அவரைப் பற்றிய பேச்சு சுற்றுப்புறமெங்கும் பரவியது.

தூய ஆவியாரே அனைத்தையும் துருவி ஆய்கிறார்; கடவுளின் ஆழ்ந்த எண்ணங்களையும் அறிகிறார். மனிதரின் உள்ளத்தில் இருப்பதை அவருள் இருக்கும் மனமேயன்றி வேறு எவரும் அறிய முடியாது அன்றோ! அவ்வாறே, கடவுள் உள்ளத்தில் இருப்பதை அவர்தம் ஆவியே அன்றி வேறு எவரும் அறியார். ஆனால், நாம் இவ்வுலக மனப்பாங்கைப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ளவில்லை. மாறாக, தூய ஆவியைக் கடவுளிடமிருந்து பெற்றுள்ளோம். இவ்வாறு கடவுள் நமக்கு அருளிய கொடைகளைக் கண்டுணர்ந்து கொள்கிறோம். ஆவிக்குரியவர்களுக்கு ஆவிக்கு உரியவற்றைப்பற்றி விளக்கிக் கூறும்போது நாங்கள் மனித ஞானத்தால் கற்றுக்கொண்ட சொற்களைப் பேசுவதில்லை; மாறாக, தூய ஆவியார் கற்றுத்தரும் சொற்களையே பேசுகிறோம்.

மனித இயல்பை மட்டும் உடைய ஒருவர் கடவுளின் ஆவிக்குரியவற்றை ஏற்றுக் கொள்வதில்லை. அவை அவருக்கு மடமையாய்த் தோன்றும். அவற்றை அவரால் அறிந்து கொள்ளவும் முடியாது. ஏனெனில் அவற்றைத் தூய ஆவியின் துணை கொண்டே ஆய்ந்துணர முடியும். ஆவிக்குரியவரோ அனைத்தையும் ஆய்ந்துணர்வார். எவரும் அவரை ஆய்வுக்கு உட்படுத்த முடியாது. “ஆண்டவருடைய மனத்தை அறிபவர் யார்? அவருக்கு அறிவுரை கூறுபவர் யார்?” நாமோ கிறிஸ்துவின் மனத்தைக் கொண்டுள்ளோம்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 4: 16-30

Jesus came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written:

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me,

for he has anointed me.

He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor,

to proclaim liberty to captives

and to the blind new sight,

to set the downtrodden free,

to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.

He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’ And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his lips. They said, ‘This is Joseph’s son, surely?’

But he replied, ‘No doubt you will quote me the saying, “Physician, heal yourself” and tell me, “We have heard all that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own countryside.”’

And he went on, ‘I tell you solemnly, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.

‘There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah’s day, when heaven remained shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land, but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a Sidonian town. And in the prophet Elisha’s time there were many lepers in Israel, but none of these was cured, except the Syrian, Naaman.’

When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged. They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him down the cliff, but he slipped through the crowd and walked away.
