அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “மண்ணுலகில் உங்களுக்கெனச் செல்வத்தைச் சேமித்து வைக்க வேண்டாம். இங்கே பூச்சியும் துருவும் அழித்துவிடும்; திருடரும் அதைக் கன்னமிட்டுத் திருடுவர். ஆனால், விண்ணுலகில் உங்கள் செல்வத்தைச் சேமித்து வையுங்கள்; அங்கே பூச்சியோ துருவோ அழிப்பதில்லை; திருடரும் கன்னமிட்டுத் திருடுவதில்லை. உங்கள் செல்வம் எங்கு உள்ளதோ அங்கே உங்கள் உள்ளமும் இருக்கும்.

கண்தான் உடலுக்கு விளக்கு. கண் நலமாயிருந்தால் உங்கள் உடல் முழுவதும் ஒளி பெற்றிருக்கும். அது கெட்டுப் போனால், உங்கள் உடல் முழுவதும் இருளாய் இருக்கும். ஆக, உங்களுக்கு ஒளி தரவேண்டியது இருளாய் இருந்தால் இருள் எப்படியிருக்கும்!”

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

பலர் உலகு சார்ந்த முறையில் பெருமையடித்துக் கொள்வதால் நானும் அவ்வாறே செய்கிறேன். அவர்கள் எதில் பெருமை பாராட்டத் துணிகிறார்களோ அதில் நானும் பெருமை பாராட்டத் துணிந்து நிற்கிறேன். இப்போதும் ஓர் அறிவிலியைப் போன்றே பேசுகிறேன்.

அவர்கள் எபிரேயரா? நானும்தான்; அவர்கள் இஸ்ரயேலரா? நானும்தான்; அவர்கள் ஆபிரகாமின் வழிமரபினரா? நானும்தான். அவர்கள் கிறிஸ்துவின் பணியாளர்களா? நான் அவர்களை விடச் சிறந்த பணியாளனே. இங்கும் நான் ஒரு மதியீனனாகவே பேசுகிறேன். நான் அவர்களை விட அதிகமாய்ப் பாடுபட்டு உழைத்தேன்; பன்முறை சிறையில் அடைபட்டேன்; கொடுமையாய் அடிபட்டேன்; பன்முறை சாவின் வாயிலில் நின்றேன். ஐந்து முறை யூதர்கள் என்னைச் சாட்டையால் ஒன்று குறைய நாற்பது அடி அடித்தார்கள். மூன்று முறை தடியால் அடிபட்டேன்; ஒரு முறை கல்லெறி பட்டேன்; மூன்று முறை கப்பல் சிதைவில் சிக்கினேன்; ஓர் இரவும் பகலும் ஆழ்கடலில் அல்லலுற்றேன். பயணங்கள் பல செய்தேன்; அவற்றில் ஆறுகளாலும் இடர்கள், கள்வராலும் இடர்கள், என் சொந்த மக்களாலும் இடர்கள், பிற மக்களாலும் இடர்கள், நாட்டிலும் இடர்கள், காட்டிலும் இடர்கள், கடலிலும் இடர்கள், போலித் திருத்தூதர் களாலும் இடர்கள், இப்படி எத்தனையோ இடர்களுக்கு ஆளானேன். பாடுபட்டு உழைத்தேன்; பன்முறை கண் விழித்தேன்; பசி தாகமுற்றேன்; பட்டினி கிடந்தேன்; குளிரில் வாடினேன்; ஆடையின்றி இருந்தேன்.

இவை தவிர எல்லாத் திருச்சபைகளையும் பற்றிய கவலை எனக்கு அன்றாடச் சுமையாயிருந்தது. யாராவது வலுவற்றிருந்தால் நானும் அவரைப் போல் ஆவதில்லையா? யாராவது பாவத்தில் விழ நேர்ந்தால் என்உள்ளம் கொதிப்பதில்லையா? நான் பெருமை பாராட்ட வேண்டும் என்றால் என் வலுவின்மையைப் பற்றியேதான் நான் பெருமை பாராட்ட வேண்டும்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 6: 19-23 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and woodworms destroy them and thieves can break in and steal. But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworms destroy them and thieves cannot break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

  ‘The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light. But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be all darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkness, what darkness that will be!’

If I am to boast, let me boast of my own feebleness

A Reading from the Second letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 11:18,21-30 

So many others have been boasting of their worldly achievements, that I will boast myself. But if anyone wants some brazen speaking – I am still talking as a fool – then I can be as brazen as any of them, and about the same things. Hebrews, are they? So am I. Israelites? So am I. Descendants of Abraham? So am I. The servants of Christ? I must be mad to say this, but so am I, and more than they: more, because I have worked harder, I have been sent to prison more often, and whipped many times more, often almost to death. Five times I had the thirty-nine lashes from the Jews; three times I have been beaten with sticks; once I was stoned; three times I have been shipwrecked and once adrift in the open sea for a night and a day. Constantly travelling, I have been in danger from rivers and in danger from brigands, in danger from my own people and in danger from pagans; in danger in the towns, in danger in the open country, danger at sea and danger from so-called brothers. I have worked and laboured, often without sleep; I have been hungry and thirsty and often starving; I have been in the cold without clothes. And, to leave out much more, there is my daily preoccupation: my anxiety for all the churches. When any man has had scruples, I have had scruples with him; when any man is made to fall, I am tortured.

  If I am to boast, then let me boast of my own feebleness.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 6: 7-15 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘In your prayers do not babble as the pagans do, for they think that by using many words they will make themselves heard. Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him. So you should pray like this:

‘Our Father in heaven,

may your name be held holy,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us.

And do not put us to the test,

but save us from the evil one.

‘Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours; but if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failings either.’
