But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.”

Ahab covets Naboth's vineyard and Jezebel has him killed

A Reading from the First Book of Kings 21: 1-16 

At that time: Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. And after this Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house, and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money.” But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and would eat no food. But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, “Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?” And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’” And Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city. And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, ‘You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them, they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.” As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

அந்நாள்களில்

இஸ்ரயேலனாகிய நாபோத்துக்கு இஸ்ரயேலில், சமாரிய அரசன் ஆகாபின் அரண்மனை அருகில், ஒரு திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் இருந்தது. ஆகாபு நாபோத்திடம், “உன் திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் என் அரண்மனை அருகில் இருப்பதால், நான் அதைக் காய்கறித் தோட்டம் ஆக்கும்படி என்னிடம் கொடுத்துவிடு. அதற்குப் பதிலாய் அதைவிட நல்ல திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை உனக்குத் தருவேன். உனக்கு விருப்பமானால், அதன் விலையை வெள்ளியாகத் தருகிறேன்” என்றான்.

அதற்கு நாபோத்து ஆகாபிடம், “என் மூதாதையரின் உரிமைச் சொத்தை நான் உமக்குக் கொடாதவாறு ஆண்டவர் என்னைக் காப்பாராக!” என்றான். “என் மூதாதையரின் உரிமைச் சொத்தை உமக்குக் கொடுக்க மாட்டேன்” என்று இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்து தன்னிடம் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளை முன்னிட்டு, ஆகாபு ஆத்திரத்துடனும் கோபத்துடனும் தன் அரண்மனைக்கு வந்தான்; முகத்தைத் திருப்பிக் கொண்டு தன் கட்டிலில் படுத்துக்கிடந்தான்; உணவருந்த மறுத்துவிட்டான்.

அப்போது அவனுடைய மனைவி ஈசபேல் அவனிடம் வந்து, “நீர் ஏன் மனம் சோர்ந்திருக்கிறீர்? ஏன் உணவருந்தவில்லை?” என்று அவனைக் கேட்டாள். அதற்கு அவன் அவளிடம், “நான் இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்திடம் பேசினேன். ‘உன் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை அதற்கான வெள்ளிக்கு எனக்குக் கொடுத்துவிடு. உனக்கு விருப்பமானால், அதற்குப் பதிலாக வேறு திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தைத் தருவேன்’ என்றேன். அதற்கு அவன் ‘என் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை உமக்குத் தர மாட்டேன்’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டான்” என்றான். அப்போது அவன் மனைவி ஈசபேல் அவனை நோக்கி, “இஸ்ரயேலின் அரசராகிய நீர் இப்படியா நடந்துகொள்வது? எழுந்திருந்து உணவருந்தி மனமகிழ்வாய் இரும். இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்தின் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை நானே உம்மிடம் ஒப்படைக்கிறேன்” என்றாள்.

எனவே அவள் ஆகாபின் பெயரால் மடல்கள் எழுதி, அவற்றில் அவனது முத்திரையைப் பொறித்து, அம்மடல்களை நாபோத்துடன் நகரில் குடியிருந்த பெரியோருக்கும் உயர்குடி மக்களுக்கும் அனுப்பினாள். அம்மடல்களில் அவள், “நீங்கள் ஒரு நோன்பு அறிவித்து நாபோத்தை மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் அமரச் செய்யுங்கள். அவனுக்கு எதிராய் இழி மனிதர் இருவரை ஏவிவிட்டு, ‘நீ கடவுளையும் அரசரையும் பழித்துரைத்தாய்’ என்று அவன் மீது குற்றம் சாட்டச் செய்யுங்கள். பின்னர் அவனை வெளியே கொண்டு போய்க் கல்லால் எறிந்து கொன்றுபோடுங்கள்” என்று எழுதியிருந்தாள்.

நாபோத்துடன் அந்நகரில் குடியிருந்த பெரியோரும் உயர்குடி மக்களும் ஈசபேல் தமக்கு அனுப்பிய மடல்களில் எழுதி இருந்தவாறே செய்தனர். அவர்கள் ஒரு நோன்பு அறிவித்து, நாபோத்தை மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் அமர்த்தினர். அப்பொழுது அந்த இழி மனிதர் இருவரும் வந்து நாபோத்துக்கு எதிரே உட்கார்ந்தனர். அந்த இழி மனிதர் மக்களைப் பார்த்து, “நாபோத்து கடவுளையும் அரசரையும் பழித்துரைத்தான்” என்று அவன் மீது குற்றம் சாட்டினர். எனவே, அவர்கள் அவனை நகருக்கு வெளியே கொண்டு போய்க் கல்லால் எறிந்து கொன்றனர்.

பிறகு அவர்கள், “நாபோத்து கல்லால் எறியுண்டு மடிந்தான்” என்று ஈசபேலுக்குச் செய்தி அனுப்பினர். நாபோத்து கல்லால் எறியுண்டு மடிந்ததை ஈசபேல் கேட்டவுடன் அவள் ஆகாபை நோக்கி, “நீர் எழுந்து சென்று இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்து உமக்கு விற்க மறுத்த அதே திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தைச் சொந்தமாக்கிக் கொள்ளும்; நாபோத்து உயிரோடில்லை; அவன் இறந்து போனான்” என்றாள். நாபோத்து இறந்து போனதை ஆகாபு கேட்டு, இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்தின் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை உடைமையாக்கிக் கொள்ளப் புறப்பட்டுப் போனான்.

இயேசு தம் சீடர் பன்னிருவரையும் தம்மிடம் வரவழைத்தார். தீய ஆவிகளை ஓட்டவும், நோய் நொடிகளைக் குணமாக்கவும் அவர்களுக்கு அதிகாரம் அளித்தார்.

அத்திருத்தூதர் பன்னிருவரின் பெயர்கள் பின்வருமாறு: முதலாவது பேதுரு என்னும் சீமோன், அடுத்து அவருடைய சகோதரர் அந்திரேயா, செபதேயுவின் மகன் யாக்கோபு, அவருடைய சகோதரர் யோவான், பிலிப்பு, பர்த்தலமேயு, தோமா, வரிதண்டினவராகிய மத்தேயு, அல்பேயுவின் மகன் யாக்கோபு, ததேயு, தீவிரவாதியாய் இருந்த சீமோன், இயேசுவைக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்த யூதாசு இஸ்காரியோத்து.

இயேசு இந்தப் பன்னிருவரையும் அனுப்பியபோது அவர்களுக்கு அறிவுரையாகக் கூறியது: “பிற இனத்தாரின் எப்பகுதிக்கும் செல்ல வேண்டாம். சமாரியாவின் நகர் எதிலும் நுழைய வேண்டாம். மாறாக, வழி தவறிப்போன ஆடுகளான இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடமே செல்லுங்கள். அப்படிச் செல்லும்போது ‘விண்ணரசு நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது’ எனப் பறைசாற்றுங்கள். நலம் குன்றியவர்கiளைக் குணமாக்குங்கள்; இறந்தோரை உயிர்பெற்றெழச் செய்யுங்கள்; தொழுநோயாளரை நலமாக்குங்கள்; பேய்களை ஓட்டுங்கள்; கொடையாகப் பெற்றீர்கள்; கொடையாகவே வழங்குங்கள்.”

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நாம் இறைப்பற்று இன்றி வலுவற்று இருந்தபோதே, குறித்த காலம் வந்ததும் கிறிஸ்து நமக்காகத் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுத்தார். நேர்மையாளருக்காக ஒருவர் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுத்தலே அரிது. ஒருவேளை நல்லவர் ஒருவருக்காக யாரேனும் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுக்கத் துணியலாம். ஆனால், நாம் பாவிகளாய் இருந்தபோதே கிறிஸ்து நமக்காகத் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுத்தார். இவ்வாறு கடவுள் நம்மீது கொண்டுள்ள தம் அன்பை எடுத்துக்காட்டியுள்ளார்.

ஆகையால் இப்போது நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தத்தினால் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர்களாகி, அவர் வழியாய்த் தண்டனையிலிருந்து தப்பி மீட்புப் பெறுவோம் என மிக உறுதியாய் நம்பலாம் அன்றோ? நாம் கடவுளுக்குப் பகைவர்களாயிருந்தும் அவருடைய மகன் நமக்காக உயிரைக் கொடுத்ததால் கடவுளோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். அப்படியானால் ஒப்புரவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள நாம், வாழும் அவர் மகன் வழியாகவே மீட்கப்படுவோம் என மிக உறுதியாய் நம்பலாம் அன்றோ! அதுமட்டும் அல்ல, இப்போது கடவுளோடு நம்மை ஒப்புரவாக்கியுள்ள நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வழியாய் நாம் கடவுளோடு உறவு கொண்டு பெருமகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறோம். இம்மகிழ்ச்சியை நமக்குத் தருபவர் கடவுளே.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9: 36-10:8

At that time: When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.”

The parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? The offspring [of my people] shall be known among the nations, and their descendants in the midst of the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are an offspring the Lord has blessed. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
