The harvest is rich but the labourers are few.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9: 32-37

At that time: A demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to Jesus. And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marvelled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.” And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.”

A Reading from the Book of.the Prophet Hosea 8: 4-7,11-13

Thus says the Lord: Israel made kings, but not through me. They set up princes, but I knew it not. With their silver and gold they made idols for their own destruction. I have spurned your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence? For it is from Israel; a craftsman made it; it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces. For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing corn has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it. Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, they have become to him altars for sinning. Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands, they would be regarded as a strange thing. As for my sacrificial offerings, they sacrifice meat and eat it, but the Lord does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.

அக்காலத்தில்

பேய்பிடித்துப் பேச்சிழந்த ஒருவரைச் சிலர் இயேசுவிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். பேயை அவர் ஓட்டியதும் பேச இயலாத அவர் பேசினார். மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினர் வியப்புற்று, “இஸ்ரயேலில் இப்படி ஒருபோதும் கண்டதில்லை” என்றனர். ஆனால் பரிசேயர், “இவன் பேய்களின் தலைவனைக் கொண்டு பேய்களை ஓட்டுகிறான்” என்றனர்.

இயேசு நகர்கள், சிற்றூர்கள் எல்லாம் சுற்றிவந்தார். எங்கும் அவர்களுடைய தொழுகைக்கூடங்களில் கற்பித்தார்; விண்ணரசைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றினார்; நோய்நொடிகள் அனைத்தையும் குணமாக்கினார். திரண்டிருந்த மக்களை அவர் கண்டபோது அவர்கள் மேல் பரிவு கொண்டார்: அவர்கள் ஆயர் இல்லா ஆடுகளைப் போல அலைக்கழிக்கப்பட்டுச் சோர்ந்து காணப்பட்டார்கள்.

அப்பொழுது அவர் தம் சீடரை நோக்கி, “அறுவடை மிகுதி; வேலையாள்களோ குறைவு. ஆகையால் தேவையான வேலையாள்களைத் தமது அறுவடைக்கு அனுப்பும்படி அறுவடையின் உரிமையாளரிடம் மன்றாடுங்கள்” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9: 18-26 

At that time: While Jesus was speaking, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. And the report of this went through all that district.

Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. “And in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband’, and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal’. And I will betroth you to me for ever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. அப்பொழுது பன்னிரு ஆண்டுகளாய் இரத்தப் போக்கினால் வருந்திய ஒரு பெண் அவருக்குப் பின்னால் வந்து அவரது மேலுடையின் ஓரத்தைத் தொட்டார். ஏனெனில் அப்பெண், “நான் அவருடைய ஆடையைத் தொட்டாலே போதும், நலம் பெறுவேன்” எனத் தமக்குள் சொல்லிக் கொண்டார். இயேசு அவரைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, “மகளே, துணிவோடிரு; உனது நம்பிக்கை உன்னைக் குணமாக்கிற்று” என்றார். அந்நேரத்திலிருந்தே அப்பெண் நலம் அடைந்திருந்தார்.

இயேசு அத்தலைவருடைய வீட்டிற்குச் சென்றார். அங்கே குழல் ஊதுவோரையும் கூட்டத்தினரின் அமளியையும் கண்டார். அவர், “விலகிப் போங்கள்; சிறுமி இறக்கவில்லை, உறங்குகிறாள்” என்றார். அவர்களோ அவரைப் பார்த்து நகைத்தார்கள். அக்கூட்டத்தினரை வெளியேற்றிய பின் அவர் உள்ளே சென்று சிறுமியின் கையைப் பிடித்தார். அவளும் உயிர் பெற்று எழுந்தாள். இச்செய்தி அந்நாடெங்கும் பரவியது.

அந்நாளில், ‘என் கணவன்’ என என்னை அவள் அழைப்பாள்; ‘என் பாகாலே’ என இனிமேல் என்னிடம் சொல்லமாட்டாள்” என்கிறார் ஆண்டவர்.

“இஸ்ரயேல்! முடிவில்லாக் காலத்திற்கும் உன்னோடு நான் மண ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துகொள்வேன்; நேர்மையிலும் நீதியிலும் பேரன்பிலும் உன்னோடு மணஒப்பந்தம் செய்துகொள்வேன். மாறாத அன்புடன் உன்னோடு மண ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துகொள்வேன்; ஆண்டவராம் என்னை நீயும் அறிந்து கொள்வாய்.”

இயேசு கூறியது: “தந்தையே, விண்ணுக்கும் மண்ணுக்கும் ஆண்டவரே, உம்மைப் போற்றுகிறேன். ஏனெனில் ஞானிகளுக்கும் அறிஞர்களுக்கும் இவற்றை மறைத்துக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தினீர். ஆம் தந்தையே, இதுவே உமது திருவுளம். என் தந்தை எல்லாவற்றையும் என்னிடத்தில் ஒப்படைத்திருக்கிறார். தந்தையைத் தவிர வேறு எவரும் மகனை அறியார்; மகனும் அவர் யாருக்கு வெளிப்படுத்த வேண்டுமென்று விரும்புகிறாரோ அவருமன்றி வேறு எவரும் தந்தையை அறியார்” என்று கூறினார்.

மேலும் அவர், “பெருஞ்சுமை சுமந்து சோர்ந்திருப்பவர்களே, எல்லாரும் என்னிடம் வாருங்கள், நான் உங்களுக்கு இளைப்பாறுதல் தருவேன். நான் கனிவும் மனத்தாழ்மையும் உடையவன். ஆகவே என் நுகத்தை உங்கள்மேல் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு என்னிடம் கற்றுக் கொள்ளுங்கள். அப்பொழுது உங்கள் உள்ளத்திற்கு இளைப்பாறுதல் கிடைக்கும். ஆம், என் நுகம் அழுத்தாது; என் சுமை எளிதாயுள்ளது” என்றார்.

மேலும் எவரும் பழைய ஆடையில் புதிய துணியை ஒட்டுப் போடுவதில்லை. ஏனெனில் அந்த ஒட்டு ஆடையைக் கிழித்துவிடும்; கிழிசலும் பெரிதாகும். அதுபோலப் பழைய தோற்பைகளில் புதிய திராட்சை மதுவை ஊற்றி வைப்பதில்லை. ஊற்றி வைத்தால் தோற்பைகள் வெடிக்கும்; மதுவும் சிந்திப்போகும்; தோற்பைகளும் பாழாகும். புதிய மதுவைப் புதிய தோற்பைகளில்தான் ஊற்றி வைப்பர். அப்போது இரண்டும் வீணாய்ப் போகா” என்றார்.

பன்னிருவருள் ஒருவரான திதிம் என்னும் தோமா, இயேசு வந்தபோது அவர்களோடு இல்லை. மற்றச் சீடர்கள் அவரிடம், “ஆண்டவரைக் கண்டோம்” என்றார்கள். தோமா அவர்களிடம், “அவருடைய கைகளில் ஆணிகளால் ஏற்பட்ட தழும்பைப் பார்த்து, அதில் என் விரலை விட்டு, அவர் விலாவில் என் கையை இட்டாலன்றி நான் நம்பமாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

எட்டு நாள்களுக்குப்பின் அவருடைய சீடர்கள் மீண்டும் உள்ளே கூடியிருந்தார்கள். அன்று தோமாவும் அவர்களோடு இருந்தார். கதவுகள் பூட்டப்பட்டிருந்தும் இயேசு உள்ளே வந்து அவர்கள் நடுவில் நின்று, “உங்களுக்கு அமைதி உரித்தாகுக!” என்று வாழ்த்தினார்.

பின்னர் அவர் தோமாவிடம், “இதோ! என் கைகள். இங்கே உன் விரலை இடு. உன் கையை நீட்டி என் விலாவில் இடு. ஐயம் தவிர்த்து நம்பிக்கை கொள்” என்றார்.

தோமா அவரைப் பார்த்து, “நீரே என் ஆண்டவர்! நீரே என் கடவுள்!!” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீ என்னைக் கண்டதால் நம்பினாய். காணாமலே நம்புவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்” என்றார்.

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
