'Behold your son. Behold your mother.'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 19: 25-34 

At that time: Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished”, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 3: 9-15,20 

After Adam had eaten of the tree, The Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

சிலுவை அருகில் இயேசுவின் தாயும், தாயின் சகோதரியும் குளோப்பாவின் மனைவியுமான மரியாவும், மகதலா மரியாவும் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தனர்.

இயேசு தம் தாயையும் அருகில் நின்ற தம் அன்புச் சீடரையும் கண்டு தம் தாயிடம், “அம்மா, இவரே உம் மகன்” என்றார். பின்னர் தம் சீடரிடம், “இவரே உம் தாய்” என்றார். அந்நேரமுதல் அச்சீடர் அவரைத் தம் வீட்டில் ஏற்று ஆதரவு அளித்து வந்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் மனிதனைக் கூப்பிட்டு, “நீ எங்கே இருக்கின்றாய்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

“உம் குரல் ஒலியை நான் தோட்டத்தில் கேட்டேன். ஆனால், எனக்கு அச்சமாக இருந்தது. ஏனெனில், நான் ஆடையின்றி இருந்தேன். எனவே, நான் ஒளிந்து கொண்டேன்” என்றான் மனிதன்.

“நீ ஆடையின்றி இருக்கின்றாய் என்று உனக்குச் சொன்னது யார்? நீ உண்ணக்கூடாது என்று நான் விலக்கிய மரத்திலிருந்து நீ உண்டாயோ?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அப்பொழுது அவன், “என்னுடன் இருக்கும்படி நீர் தந்த அந்தப் பெண், மரத்தின் கனியை எனக்குக் கொடுத்தாள்; நானும் உண்டேன்” என்றான்.

ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள், “நீ ஏன் இவ்வாறு செய்தாய்?” என்று பெண்ணைக் கேட்க, அதற்குப் பெண், “பாம்பு என்னை ஏமாற்றியது, நானும் உண்டேன்” என்றாள். ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் பாம்பிடம், “நீ இவ்வாறு செய்ததால், கால்நடைகள், காட்டு விலங்குகள் அனைத்திலும் சபிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பாய். உன் வயிற்றினால் ஊர்ந்து உன் வாழ்நாள் எல்லாம் புழுதியைத் தின்பாய். உனக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும், உன் வித்துக்கும் அவள் வித்துக்கும் பகையை உண்டாக்குவேன். அவள் வித்து உன் தலையைக் காயப்படுத்தும். நீ அதன் குதிங்காலைக் காயப்படுத்துவாய்” என்றார். மனிதன் தன் மனைவிக்கு ‘ஏவாள்’ என்று பெயரிட்டான்; ஏனெனில் உயிருள்ளோர் எல்லாருக்கும் அவளே தாய்.

அன்று வாரத்தின் முதல் நாள். அது மாலை வேளை. யூதர்களுக்கு அஞ்சிச் சீடர்கள் தாங்கள் இருந்த இடத்தின் கதவுகளை மூடிவைத்திருந்தார்கள். அப்போது இயேசு அங்கு வந்து அவர்கள் நடுவில் நின்று, “உங்களுக்கு அமைதி உரித்தாகுக!” என்று வாழ்த்தினார். இவ்வாறு சொல்லியபின் அவர் தம் கைகளையும் விலாவையும் அவர்களிடம் காட்டினார். ஆண்டவரைக் கண்டதால் சீடர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சி கொண்டார்கள்.

இயேசு மீண்டும் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “உங்களுக்கு அமைதி உரித்தாகுக! தந்தை என்னை அனுப்பியது போல நானும் உங்களை அனுப்புகிறேன்” என்றார். இதைச் சொன்னபின் அவர் அவர்கள்மேல் ஊதி, “தூய ஆவியைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள். எவருடைய பாவங்களை நீங்கள் மன்னிப்பீர்களோ, அவை மன்னிக்கப்படும். எவருடைய பாவங்களை மன்னியாதிருப்பீர்களோ, அவை மன்னிக்கப்படா” என்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டவரன்றி வேறு எவரும் ‘இயேசுவே ஆண்டவர்’ எனச் சொல்ல முடியாது. இதை நீங்கள் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

அருள் கொடைகள் பலவகை உண்டு; ஆனால் தூய ஆவியார் ஒருவரே. திருத்தொண்டுகளும் பலவகை உண்டு; ஆனால் ஆண்டவர் ஒருவரே. செயல்பாடுகள் பலவகை உண்டு; ஆனால் கடவுள் ஒருவரே. அவரே எல்லாரிடமும் எல்லாவற்றையும் செயல்படுத்துபவர். பொது நன்மைக்காகவே தூய ஆவியாரின் செயல்பாடுகள் ஒவ்வொருவரிலும் வெளிப்படுகிறது.

உடல் ஒன்றே; உறுப்புகள் பல. உடலின் உறுப்புகள் பலவாயினும் உடல் ஒன்றாயிருப்பதுபோல கிறிஸ்துவும் இருக்கிறார். ஏனெனில், யூதரானாலும் கிரேக்கரானாலும், அடிமைகளானாலும் உரிமைக் குடிமக்களானாலும் நாம் எல்லாரும் ஒரே தூய ஆவியால் ஒரே உடலாய் இருக்கும்படி திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்றோம். அந்த ஒரே ஆவியையே பானமாகவும் பெற்றோம்.

பெந்தக்கோஸ்து என்னும் நாள் வந்தபோது சீடர்கள் எல்லாரும் ஒரே இடத்தில் கூடியிருந்தார்கள். திடீரென்று கொடுங்காற்று வீசுவதுபோன்று ஓர் இரைச்சல் வானத்திலிருந்து உண்டாகி, அவர்கள் அமர்ந்திருந்த வீடு முழுவதும் ஒலித்தது. மேலும் நெருப்புப்போன்ற பிளவுற்ற நாவுகள் ஒவ்வொருவர் மேலும் வந்து அமர்ந்ததை அவர்கள் கண்டார்கள். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டனர். தூய ஆவியின் தூண்டுதலால் அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் வெவ்வேறான மொழிகளில் பேசத் தொடங்கினார்கள்.

அப்பொழுது வானத்தின் கீழுள்ள அனைத்து நாடுகளிலுமிருந்தும் வந்திருந்த இறைப்பற்றுள்ள யூத மக்கள் எருசலேமில் தங்கியிருந்தனர். அந்த ஒலியைக் கேட்டுக் கூடிய திரளான மக்களுள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தம் சொந்த மொழிகளில் அவர்கள் பேசக் கேட்டுக் குழப்பமடைந்தனர். எல்லாரும் மலைத்துப்போய், “இதோ பேசுகின்ற இவர்கள் அனைவரும் கலிலேயர் அல்லவா? அவ்வாறிருக்க நம்முடைய தாய்மொழிகளில் இவர்கள் பேசுவதை நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் கேட்பது எப்படி?” என வியந்தனர். “பார்த்தரும், மேதியரும், எலாமியரும், மெசப்பொத்தாமியா, யூதேயா, கப்பதோக்கியா, போந்து, ஆசியா ஆகிய நாடுகளில் வாழ்கின்றவர்களும் பிரிகியா, பம்பிலியா, எகிப்து, சிரேன் நகரையடுத்த லிபியாவின் பகுதிகளில் வாழும் மக்களும் உரோமையிலிருந்து வந்து தங்கியிருந்தவர்களும், யூதரும், யூதம் தழுவியோரும், கிரேக்கரும், அரேபியரும் ஆகிய நாம் நம் மொழிகளிலே கடவுளின் மாபெரும் செயல்களை இவர்கள் பேசக் கேட்கிறோமே!” என்றனர்.

Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

You follow me!” So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles  28: 16-20, 30-31 

When we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him. After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. When they had examined me, they wished to set me at liberty, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. But because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar— though I had no charge to bring against my nation. For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain. He lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

அக்காலத்தில்

பேதுரு திரும்பிப் பார்த்தபோது, இயேசுவின் அன்புச் சீடரும் பின்தொடர்கிறார் என்று கண்டார். இவரே இரவு உணவின்போது இயேசுவின் அருகில் அவர் மார்புப் பக்கமாய்ச் சாய்ந்துகொண்டு, “ஆண்டவரே உம்மைக் காட்டிக் கொடுப்பவன் எவன்?” என்று கேட்டவர். அவரைக் கண்ட பேதுரு இயேசுவிடம், “ஆண்டவரே, இவருக்கு என்ன ஆகும்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நான் வரும்வரை இவன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என நான் விரும்பினால் உனக்கு என்ன? நீ என்னைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வா” என்றார்.

ஆகையால் அந்தச் சீடர் இறக்கமாட்டார் என்னும் பேச்சு சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளிடையே பரவியது. ஆனால் இவர் இறக்கமாட்டார் என இயேசு கூறவில்லை. மாறாக, “நான் வரும்வரை இவன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என நான் விரும்பினால், உனக்கு என்ன?” என்றுதான் கூறினார்.

இந்தச் சீடரே இவற்றிற்குச் சாட்சி. இவரே இவற்றை எழுதி வைத்தவர். இவரது சான்று உண்மையானது என நமக்குத் தெரியும். இயேசு செய்தவை வேறு பலவும் உண்டு. அவற்றை ஒவ்வொன்றாக எழுதினால், எழுதப்படும் நூல்களை உலகமே கொள்ளாது எனக் கருதுகிறேன்.

உரோமையில் தனி வீட்டில் தங்கியிருக்க பவுல் அனுமதி பெற்றுக்கொண்டார். ஆனால் படைவீரர் ஒருவர் அவரைக் காவல் காத்து வந்தார். மூன்று நாள்களுக்குப் பின்பு பவுல் யூத முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களைத் தம்மிடம் வரவழைத்தார். அவர்கள் வந்து கூடியபின் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “சகோதரரே, நான் நம்முடைய மக்களுக்கு எதிராகவோ, மூதாதையரின் மரபுகளுக்கு எதிராகவோ எதுவும் செய்யவில்லை. எனினும் எருசலேமில் நான் கைதுசெய்யப்பட்டு உரோமையரிடம் ஒப்புவிக்கப்பட்டேன். அவர்கள் என்னை விசாரித்தபோது மரண தண்டனைக்குரிய குற்றம் எதுவும் என்னிடம் காணாததால் என்னை விடுதலை செய்ய விரும்பினார்கள்.

யூதர்கள் அதனை எதிர்த்துப் பேசியபோது நான், “சீசரே என்னை விசாரிக்கவேண்டும்” என்று கேட்கவேண்டிய கட்டாயத்துக்குள்ளானேன். ஆனால் என் இனத்தவர்க்கு எதிரான குற்றச்சாட்டு எதுவும் என்னிடமில்லை. இதனால்தான் நான் உங்களைக் கண்டு பேசுவதற்காக அழைத்தேன். இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கொண்டிருக்கும் நம்பிக்கையின் பொருட்டு நான் விலங்கிடப்பட்டுள்ளேன்” என்றார்.

பவுல் அங்கு இரண்டு ஆண்டுகள் முழுவதும் தாம் வாடகைக்கு எடுத்த வீட்டில் தங்கியிருந்தார். தம்மிடம் வந்த அனைவரையும் வரவேற்று இறையாட்சியைக் குறித்துப் பறைசாற்றி வந்தார். ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவைப்பற்றி முழுத் துணிவோடு தடை ஏதுமின்றிக் கற்பித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

மூன்றாம் முறையாக இயேசு அவரிடம், “யோவானின் மகன் சீமோனே, உனக்கு என்னிடம் அன்பு உண்டா?” என்று கேட்டார். ‘உனக்கு என்னிடம் அன்பு உண்டா?’ என்று இயேசு மூன்றாம் முறை கேட்டதால் பேதுரு துயருற்று, அவரிடம், “ஆண்டவரே உமக்கு எல்லாம் தெரியுமே! எனக்கு உம்மீது அன்பு உண்டு என்பது நீர் அறியாத ஒன்றா?” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “என் ஆடுகளைப் பேணி வளர். நீ இளைஞனாக இருந்தபோது நீயே இடையைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு உனக்கு விருப்பமான இடத்தில் நடமாடி வந்தாய். உனக்கு முதிர்ந்த வயது ஆகும்போது நீ கைகளை விரித்துக் கொடுப்பாய். வேறொருவர் உன்னைக் கட்டி, உனக்கு விருப்பம் இல்லாத இடத்திற்குக் கூட்டிச்செல்வார் என உறுதியாக உனக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

பேதுரு எவ்வாறு இறந்து கடவுளை மாட்சிப்படுத்தப் போகிறார் என்பதைக் குறிப்பிட்டே அவர் இவ்வாறு சொன்னார். இதைச் சொன்னபின் பேதுருவிடம், “என்னைப் பின் தொடர்” என்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

அகிரிப்பா அரசனும், பெர்னிக்கியுவும் பெஸ்தைச் சந்திக்கச் செசரியா வந்தனர். அவர்கள் பல நாள்கள் அங்குத் தங்கியிருந்தபோது பெஸ்து பவுலுக்கு எதிரான வழக்கை அரசனிடம் எடுத்துக் கூறினார்:

“பெலிக்சு கைதியாக விட்டுச்சென்ற ஒரு மனிதர் இங்கு இருக்கிறார். நான் எருசலேமிலிருந்தபோது தலைமைக் குருக்களும், யூதரின் மூப்பர்களும் அவரைப்பற்றிய வழக்கை என்னிடம் தெரிவித்து அவருக்கு எதிராகத் தீர்ப்பளிக்க வேண்டுமென்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்கள். நான் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, ‘குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டவர் எவரும் குற்றம் சாட்டியவர்க்கு முன் நின்று தம்மீது சுமத்தப்பட்ட குற்றத்தைப்பற்றி விளக்குவதற்கான வாய்ப்பைப் பெறவேண்டும். அதற்குமுன் அவருக்குத் தீர்ப்பு அளிப்பது உரோமையரின் வழக்கமல்ல’ என்று கூறினேன்.

எனவே அவர்கள் இங்கே வந்தபோது, சற்றும் காலம் தாழ்த்தாமல் மறு நாளிலேயே நான் நடுவர் இருக்கையில் அமர்ந்து அவரை என்னிடம் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வருமாறு ஆணை பிறப்பித்தேன். குற்றம் சுமத்தியவர்கள் எழுந்து பேசியபோது நான் நினைத்திருந்த கொடிய குற்றம் எதுவும் அவர்மீது சுமத்தவில்லை. அவர்கள் அவருக்கு எதிராகச் சொன்னதெல்லாம் தங்கள் சமயத்திலுள்ள சில கருத்து வேறுபாடுகளாகத்தான் இருந்தன. இறந்துபோன இயேசு என்னும் ஒருவரைப்பற்றியும் அவர்கள் பேசினார்கள். இந்த இயேசு உயிரோடு இருப்பதாகப் பவுல் சாதித்தார்.

இக்கருத்துச்சிக்கல்களைப்பற்றிக் கேட்டதும் நான் குழம்பிப் போய், “நீர் எருசலேமுக்கு வருகிறீரா? அங்கு இவைபற்றி விசாரிக்கப்பட விரும்புகிறீரா?” எனக் கேட்டேன். பவுல், பேரரசரே விசாரித்துத் தீர்ப்பு அளிக்கும்வரை தம்மைக் காவலில் வைக்க வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டார். ஆதலால் இவரைச் சீசரிடம் அனுப்பும்வரை காவலில் வைக்குமாறு ஆணை பிறப்பித்தேன்.”

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 21:15-19 

When Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and] they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. In those days: Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus. And as they stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying, “There is a man left prisoner by Felix, and when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid out their case against him, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him. I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up anyone before the accused met the accusers face to face and had opportunity to make his defence concerning the charge laid against him. So when they came together here, I made no delay, but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought. When the accusers stood up, they brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed. Rather they had certain points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, who was dead, but whom Paul asserted to be alive. Being at a loss how to investigate these questions, I asked whether he wanted to go to Jerusalem and be tried there regarding them. But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of the emperor, I ordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.”

In those days: Desiring to know the real reason why Paul was being accused by the Jews, the tribune unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the Council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them. Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the Council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope of the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. Then a great clamour arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party stood up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks. The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்த்து வேண்டியது: “தந்தையே, என் சீடர்களுக்காக மட்டும் நான் வேண்டவில்லை; அவர்களுடைய வார்த்தையின் வழியாக என்னிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்வோருக்காகவும் வேண்டுகிறேன். எல்லாரும் ஒன்றாய் இருப்பார்களாக! தந்தையே, நீர் என்னுள்ளும் நான் உம்முள்ளும் இருப்பதுபோல் அவர்களும் ஒன்றாய் இருப்பார்களாக! இதனால் நீரே என்னை அனுப்பினீர் என்று உலகம் நம்பும்.

நாம் ஒன்றாய் இருப்பதுபோல் அவர்களும் ஒன்றாய் இருக்குமாறு நீர் எனக்கு அருளிய மாட்சியை நான் அவர்களுக்கு அளித்தேன். இவ்வாறு, நான் அவர்களுள்ளும் நீர் என்னுள்ளும் இருப்பதால் அவர்களும் முழுமையாய் ஒன்றித்திருப்பார்களாக. இதனால் நீரே என்னை அனுப்பினீர் எனவும் நீர் என்மீது அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளது போல் அவர்கள்மீதும் அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளீர் எனவும் உலகு அறிந்துகொள்ளும்.

தந்தையே, உலகம் தோன்றும் முன்னே நீர் என்மீது அன்பு கொண்டு எனக்கு மாட்சி அளித்தீர். நீர் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்தவர்கள் என் மாட்சியைக் காணுமாறு அவர்களும் நான் இருக்கும் இடத்திலேயே என்னோடு இருக்க வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறேன்.

நீதியுள்ள தந்தையே, உலகு உம்மை அறியவில்லை; ஆனால் நான் உம்மை அறிந்துள்ளேன். நீரே என்னை அனுப்பினீர் என அவர்களும் அறிந்துகொண்டார்கள். நான் அவர்களோடு இணைந்திருக்கவும் நீர் என்மீது கொண்டிருந்த அன்பு அவர்கள்மீது இருக்கவும் உம்மைப்பற்றி அவர்களுக்கு அறிவித்தேன்; இன்னும் அறிவிப்பேன்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

யூதர்கள் பவுல்மீது என்ன குற்றம் சுமத்துகிறார்கள் என்பதை உறுதியாக அறிய ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர் விரும்பினார். எனவே மறுநாள் தலைமைக் குருக்களும், தலைமைச் சங்கத்தினர் அனைவரும் கூடிவருமாறு அவர் ஆணை பிறப்பித்துப் பவுலைச் சிறையிலிருந்து கொண்டுவந்து அவர்கள் முன் நிறுத்தினார்.

அவர்களுள் ஒரு பகுதியினர் சதுசேயர் என்றும், மறு பகுதியினர் பரிசேயர் என்றும் பவுல் அறிந்து, “சகோதரரே! நான் ஒரு பரிசேயன். பரிசேய மரபில் பிறந்தவன்; இறந்தோர் உயிர்த்தெழுவர் என்னும் எதிர்நோக்கின் பொருட்டு விசாரிக்கப்படுகிறேன்” என்று தலைமைச் சங்கத்தின் முன் உரத்த குரலில் கூறினார்.

அவர் இப்படிச் சொன்னபோது பரிசேயருக்கும் சதுசேயருக்கும் இடையே வாக்குவாதம் எழுந்தது. எனவே அங்குத் திரண்டிருந்தோர் இரண்டாகப் பிரிந்தனர். சதுசேயப் பிரிவினர் வானதூதரும் உயிர்த்தெழுதல், ஆவிகள் ஆகியனவும் இல்லை என்று கூறிவந்தனர்; பரிசேயர் இவையனைத்தும் உண்டென ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர். அங்குப் பெருங்கூச்சல் எழுந்தது. பரிசேயப் பிரிவினைச் சேர்ந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞருள் சிலர் எழுந்து, “இவரிடம் தவறொன்றையும் காணோமே! வானதூதர் ஒருவரோ, ஓர் ஆவியோ இவரோடு பேசியிருக்கலாம் அல்லவா!” என வாதாடினர்.

வாக்குவாதம் முற்றவே அவர்கள் பவுலைப் பிய்த்தெறிந்துவிடுவர் என ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர் அஞ்சிப் படைவீரரை வரச்சொல்லி அவரை அவர்கள் நடுவிலிருந்து பிடித்துக் கோட்டைக்குள் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு செல்லுமாறு ஆணை பிறப்பித்தார்.

மறுநாள் இரவு ஆண்டவர் அவரருகில் நின்று, “துணிவோடிரும்; எருசலேமில் என்னைப்பற்றிச் சான்று பகர்ந்ததுபோல உரோமையிலும் நீர் சான்றுபகர வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

In those days: Paul said to the elders of the Church of Ephesus, “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. பவுல் எபேசு சபையின் மூப்பர்களிடம் கூறியது: “தமது சொந்த இரத்தத்தால் தமதாக்கிக்கொண்ட கடவுளின் திருச்சபையை மேய்ப்பதற்குத் தூய ஆவியார் உங்களைக் கண்காணிப்பாளராக ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளதால் உங்களையும், மந்தை முழுவதையும் கவனமுடன் காத்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். உங்களை விட்டு நான் சென்ற பின்பு கொடிய ஓநாய்கள் உங்களுக்குள் நுழையும் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும். அவை மந்தையைத் தப்பவிடாதவாறு தாக்கும். உங்களிடமிருந்து சிலர் தோன்றி சீடர்களையும் தம்மிடம் திசைதிருப்பும் அளவுக்கு உண்மையைத் திரித்துக் கூறுவர்.

எனவே விழிப்பாயிருங்கள்; மூன்று ஆண்டு காலமாக அல்லும் பகலும் இடைவிடாது கண்ணீரோடு நான் உங்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அறிவுறுத்தி வந்ததை நீங்கள் நினைவிற் கொள்ளுங்கள். இப்போதும் நான் உங்களைக் கடவுளிடம் ஒப்படைக்கிறேன்; அவரது அருள் வார்த்தைக்கும் கட்டுப்படுவீர்களாக! அவ்வார்த்தை வளர்ச்சியையும் தூயோர் அனைவருக்கும் உரிய உரிமைப்பேற்றையும் உங்களுக்குத் தர வல்லது.

எவருடைய பொன்னுக்கோ வெள்ளிக்கோ ஆடைக்கோ நான் ஆசைப்பட்டதில்லை. என்னுடைய தேவைகளுக்காகவும் என்னோடு இருந்தவர்களுடைய தேவைகளுக்காகவும் இந்த என் கைகளே உழைத்தன என்பதை நீங்கள் அறிவீர்கள். இவ்வாறு பாடுபட்டு உழைத்து நலிவுற்றோர்க்குத் துணை நிற்கவேண்டுமென்று அனைத்திலும் உங்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டினேன். அதோடு, பெற்றுக்கொள்வதைவிடக் கொடுத்தலே பேறுடைமை என்று ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கூறியதை நினைவுகூருங்கள் என்றும் கூறினேன்."

இவற்றைச் சொன்னபின் அவர் முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு, அவர்கள் எல்லாரோடும் சேர்ந்து இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார். பின் எல்லாரும் பவுலைக் கட்டித் தழுவி முத்தமிட்டுக் கதறி அழுதனர். ‘இனிமேல் நீங்கள் என் முகத்தைப் பார்க்கப் போவதில்லை’ என்று அவர் கூறியது அவர்களுக்கு மிகுந்த வேதனை அளித்தது. பிறகு அவர்கள் கப்பல்வரைக்கும் சென்று அவரை வழியனுப்பிவைத்தனர்.

நான் செய்யுமாறு நீர் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்திருந்த வேலையைச் செய்து முடித்து நான் உம்மை உலகில் மாட்சிப்படுத்தினேன். தந்தையே, உலகம் தோன்றும் முன்பே நீர் என்னை மாட்சிப்படுத்தியுள்ளீர். இப்போது உம் திருமுன் அதே மாட்சியை எனக்குத் தந்தருளும்.

நீர் இவ்வுலகிலிருந்து தேர்ந்தெடுத்து என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்த மக்களுக்கு நான் உமது பெயரை வெளிப்படுத்தினேன். உமக்கு உரியவர்களாய் இருந்த அவர்களை நீர் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்தீர். அவர்களும் உம் வார்த்தைகளைக் கடைப்பிடித்தார்கள். நீர் எனக்குத் தந்தவை அனைத்தும் உம்மிடமிருந்தே வந்தவை என்பது இப்போது அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியும். ஏனெனில் நீர் என்னிடம் சொன்னவற்றையே நான் அவர்களிடமும் சொன்னேன். அவர்களும் அதை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு நான் உம்மிடமிருந்து வந்தேன் என்பதை உண்மையில் அறிந்துகொண்டார்கள். நீரே என்னை அனுப்பினீர் என்பதையும் நம்பினார்கள்.

அவர்களுக்காக நான் வேண்டுகிறேன். உலகிற்காக அல்ல, மாறாக நீர் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்தவர்களுக்காகவே வேண்டுகிறேன். அவர்கள் உமக்கு உரியவர்கள்.

என்னுடையதெல்லாம் உம்முடையதே; உம்முடையதும் என்னுடையதே. அவர்கள் வழியாய் நான் மாட்சி பெற்றிருக்கிறேன். இனி நான் உலகில் இருக்கப்போவதில்லை. அவர்கள் உலகில் இருப்பார்கள். நான் உம்மிடம் வருகிறேன்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் மிலேத்துவிலிருந்து எபேசுக்கு ஆள் அனுப்பி, திருச்சபையின் மூப்பர்களை வரவழைத்தார். அவர்கள் வந்ததும் அவர்களிடம் அவர் கூறியது:

“நான் ஆசியாவுக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்த நாள்முதல் இந்நாள்வரை எவ்வாறு உங்களிடம் நடந்துகொண்டேன் என்பதை நீங்கள் அறிவீர்கள். யூதர்களுடைய சூழ்ச்சிகளால் எனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட சோதனைகளின்போது மிகுந்த மனத்தாழ்மையோடும் கண்ணீரோடும் ஆண்டவருக்குப் பணிபுரிந்தேன். நன்மை பயக்கும் ஒன்றையும் உங்களுக்கு நான் அறிவிக்காமல் விட்டுவிடவில்லை; பொது இடங்களிலும் வீடு வீடாகவும் சென்று உங்களுக்குக் கற்றுக்கொடுத்தேன். நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசுவின்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளுமாறும், மனம்மாறி கடவுளிடம் வந்து சேருமாறும் நான் யூதரிடமும் கிரேக்கரிடமும் வற்புறுத்திக் கூறினேன்.

இப்போதும் தூய ஆவியாருக்குக் கட்டுப்பட்டு நான் எருசலேமுக்குச் செல்கிறேன். அங்கு எனக்கு என்ன நேரிடும் என்பது தெரியாது. சிறை வாழ்வும், இன்னல்களும் எனக்காகக் காத்திருக்கின்றன என்று தூய ஆவியார் ஒவ்வொரு நகரிலும் என்னை எச்சரித்து வருகிறார். என்னைப் பொறுத்த வரையில் எனது உயிரை ஒரு பொருட்டாக நான் மதிக்கவில்லை. இறையருளைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்திக்குச் சான்று பகருமாறு ஆண்டவர் இயேசு எனக்குக் கொடுத்த பணியை நிறைவேற்றி என் வாழ்க்கை ஓட்டத்தை முடிப்பதே என் விருப்பம்.

இதுவரை நான் உங்களிடையே வந்து இறையாட்சியைப் பற்றிப் பறைசாற்றினேன். ஆனால் இனிமேல் உங்களுள் எவரும் என் முகத்தைப் பார்க்கப்போவதில்லை என்று நான் அறிவேன். உங்களுள் எவரது அழிவுக்கும் நான் பொறுப்பாளியல்ல என்று இன்று நான் உங்களிடம் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன். கடவுளின் திட்டம் எதையும் நான் உங்களுக்கு அறிவிக்காமல் விட்டுவிடவில்லை.”

At that time: Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. என் வழியாய் நீங்கள் அமைதி காணும்பொருட்டே நான் இவற்றை உங்களிடம் சொன்னேன். உலகில் உங்களுக்குத் துன்பம் உண்டு; எனினும் துணிவுடன் இருங்கள். நான் உலகின்மீது வெற்றி கொண்டுவிட்டேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொல்லோ கொரிந்தில் இருந்தபோது பவுல் மலைப்பாங்கான பகுதி வழியாக எபேசு வந்தார். அங்கு அவர் சில சீடர்களைக் கண்டு, அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டபோது தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “தூய ஆவி என்னும் ஒன்று உண்டு என்றுகூட நாங்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டதில்லையே” என்றார்கள். “அவ்வாறெனில் நீங்கள் எந்தத் திருமுழுக்கைப் பெற்றீர்கள்?” எனப் பவுல் கேட்க, அவர்கள், “நாங்கள் யோவான் கொடுத்த திருமுழுக்கைப் பெற்றோம்” என்றார்கள். அப்பொழுது பவுல், “யோவான் மனம் மாறிய மக்களுக்குத் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்து, தமக்குப்பின் வரும் இயேசுவிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளுமாறு கூறினார்” என்றார்.

இதைக் கேட்ட மக்கள் ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசுவின் பெயரில் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்றனர். பவுல் அவர்கள்மீது கைகளை வைத்ததும், தூய ஆவி அவர்கள்மேல் இறங்கியது. அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் பரவசப் பேச்சுப் பேசினர்; இறைவாக்கும் உரைத்தனர். அங்கு ஏறக்குறைய பன்னிரண்டு பேர் இருந்தனர்.

பின்பு பவுல் தொழுகைக்கூடம் சென்றார். அங்கு அவர் மூன்று மாதங்கள் இறையாட்சி பற்றித் துணிவுடன் மக்களோடு பேசி அவர்களோடு விவாதித்து அவர்களை நம்பச் செய்தார்.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 19: 1-8 

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. There were about twelve men in all. And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.

பதினொரு சீடர்களும் இயேசு தங்களுக்குப் பணித்தபடியே கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள ஒரு மலைக்குச் சென்றார்கள். அங்கே அவரைக் கண்டு பணிந்தார்கள். சிலரோ ஐயமுற்றார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களை அணுகி, “விண்ணுலகிலும் மண்ணுலகிலும் அனைத்து அதிகாரமும் எனக்கு அருளப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. எனவே நீங்கள் போய் எல்லா மக்களினத்தாரையும் சீடராக்குங்கள்; தந்தை, மகன், தூய ஆவியார் பெயரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுங்கள். நான் உங்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்ட யாவையும் அவர்களும் கடைப்பிடிக்கும்படி கற்பியுங்கள். இதோ! உலக முடிவு வரை எந்நாளும் நான் உங்களுடன் இருக்கிறேன்” என்று கூறினார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நம் ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் கடவுளும் மாட்சிமிகு தந்தையுமானவர் அவரை முழுமையாக நீங்கள் அறிந்துகொள்ளுமாறு ஞானமும், வெளிப்பாடும் தரும் தூய ஆவியை உங்களுக்கு அருள்வாராக!

கடவுளுடைய அழைப்பு உங்களுக்கு எத்தகைய எதிர்நோக்கைத் தந்துள்ளது என்றும், இறைமக்களுக்கு அவர் அளிக்கும் உரிமைப்பேறு எத்துணை மாட்சிமிக்கது என்றும், அவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்ப வர்களாகிய நம்மிடம் செயலாற்றுகிற அவரது வல்லமை எத்துணை ஒப்புயர்வற்றது, மேலானது என்றும் நீங்கள் அறியுமாறு உங்கள் அகக்கண்கள் ஒளியூட்டப்பெறுவனவாக! கடவுள் வலிமைமிக்க தம் ஆற்றலைக் கிறிஸ்துவிடம் செயல்படுத்தி, இறந்த அவரை உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்து, விண்ணுலகில் தமது வலப்பக்கத்தில் அமர்த்தினார். அதன் மூலம் ஆட்சியாளர், அதிகாரம் கொண்டோர், வல்லமை உடையோர், தலைமை தாங்குவோர் ஆகிய அனைவருக்கும் மேலாகவும் அவரை உயர்த்தினார்; இவ்வுலகில் மட்டும் அல்ல; வரும் உலகிலும் வேறு எப்பெயர் கொண்டோருக்கும் மேலாகவும் அவரை உயர்த்தினார்.

அனைவரையும் கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு அடிபணியச் செய்து, அனைத்துக்கும் மேலாக அவரைத் திருச்சபைக்குத் தலையாகத் தந்தருளினார். திருச்சபையே அவரது உடல். எங்கும் எல்லாவற்றையும் நிரப்புகின்ற அவரால் அது நிறைவு பெறுகின்றது.

தெயோபில் அவர்களே, இயேசு தாம் தெரிந்துகொண்ட திருத்தூதர்களுக்கு அவர்கள் தூய ஆவியின் துணையோடு செய்ய வேண்டியவற்றைக் குறித்து அறிவுறுத்தியபின் விண்ணேற்றமடைந்தார். விண்ணேற்றமடைந்த நாள்வரை அவர் செய்தவை, கற்பித்தவை யாவற்றையும் குறித்து எனது முதலாம் நூலில் நான் எழுதினேன். இயேசு துன்புற்று இறந்தபின்பு நாற்பது நாள்களாக அவர்களுக்குத் தோன்றி, இறையாட்சியைப்பற்றிக் கற்பித்தார்; பல தெளிவான சான்றுகளால் தாம் உயிரோடிருப்பதைக் காண்பித்தார்.

அவர்களோடு சேர்ந்து உண்ணும்போது அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் எருசலேமை விட்டு நீங்க வேண்டாம். என்னிடமிருந்து கேட்டறிந்த தந்தையின் வாக்குறுதி நிறைவேறக் காத்திருங்கள். யோவான் தண்ணீரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்தார். நீங்களோ இன்னும் சில நாள்களில் தூய ஆவியால் திருமுழுக்குப் பெறுவீர்கள்” என்று கூறினார்.

பின்பு அங்கே கூடியிருந்தவர்கள் அவரிடம், “ஆண்டவரே, இஸ்ரயேலுக்கு ஆட்சியுரிமையை மீண்டும் பெற்றுத் தரும் காலம் இதுதானோ?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “என் தந்தை தம் அதிகாரத்தால் குறித்துவைத்துள்ள நேரங்களையும் காலங்களையும் அறிவது உங்களுக்கு உரியது அல்ல; ஆனால் தூய ஆவி உங்களிடம் வரும்போது நீங்கள் கடவுளது வல்லமையைப் பெற்று எருசலேமிலும் யூதேயா, சமாரியா முழுவதிலும் உலகின் கடையெல்லை வரைக்கும் எனக்குச் சாட்சிகளாய் இருப்பீர்கள்” என்றார்.

இவற்றைச் சொன்னபின்பு, அவர்கள் கண்கள் முன்பாக அவர் மேலே எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார். மேகம் ஒன்று அவரை எடுத்துச் சென்று அவர்கள் பார்வையிலிருந்து மறைத்துவிட்டது. அவர் செல்லும்போது அவர்கள் வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துக்கொண்டே இருந்தார்கள். அப்போது வெண்ணுடை அணிந்த இருவர் தோன்றி, “கலிலேயரே, நீங்கள் ஏன் வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துக்கொண்டே நிற்கிறீர்கள்? இந்த இயேசு உங்களிடமிருந்து விண்ணேற்றம் அடைந்ததைக் கண்டீர்கள் அல்லவா? அவ்வாறே அவர் மீண்டும் வருவார்” என்றனர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 28:16-20 

At that time: The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshipped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
