A Reading from the book of Genesis (17, 1.9-10.15-22) 

When Abraham was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “I am the Mighty God; walk in my presence and be perfect. God said to Abraham, "You will keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you, from generation to generation. And this is the covenant that will be kept between me and you, that is, you and your offspring after you: all your male children will be circumcised. God said to Abraham again: "Sarai, thy wife, thou shalt no longer call her name Sarai; henceforth her name is Sara (that is to say: Princess). எலிசபெத்துக்குப் பேறுகாலம் நெருங்கியது. அவர் ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுத்தார். ஆண்டவர் அவருக்குப் பெரிதும் இரக்கம் காட்டினார் என்பதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டுச் சுற்றி வாழ்ந்தோரும் உறவினரும் அவரோடு சேர்ந்து மகிழ்ந்தனர். எட்டாம் நாளில் அவர்கள் குழந்தைக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்ய வந்தார்கள்; செக்கரியா என்ற அதன் தந்தையின் பெயரையே அதற்குச் சூட்ட இருந்தார்கள்.

அதற்கு அவர் எழுதுபலகை ஒன்றைக் கேட்டு வாங்கி, “இக்குழந்தையின் பெயர் யோவான்” என்று எழுதினார். எல்லாரும் வியப்படைந்தனர். அப்பொழுதே அவரது வாய் திறந்தது; நா கட்டவிழ்ந்தது; அவர் கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தார். சுற்றி வாழ்ந்தோர் அனைவரும் இதைப்பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டு அஞ்சினர். இச்செய்தி யூதேய மலை நாடெங்கும் பரவியது. கேள்விப்பட்டவர்கள் யாவரும் இச்செய்தியைத் தங்கள் உள்ளங்களில் இருத்தி, “இக்குழந்தை எப்படிப்பட்டதாக இருக்குமோ?” என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் அக்குழந்தை ஆண்டவருடைய கைவன்மையைப் பெற்றிருந்தது.

குழந்தையாய் இருந்த யோவான் வளர்ந்து மன வலிமை பெற்றார். இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்குத் தம்மை வெளிப்படுத்தும் காலம் வரை அவர் பாலை நிலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் கூறியது: கடவுள் அவரை நீக்கிவிட்டுத் தாவீதை அவர்களுக்கு அரசராக ஏற்படுத்தினார்; அவரைக் குறித்து ‘ஈசாயின் மகனான தாவீதை என் இதயத்துக்கு உகந்தவனாகக் கண்டேன் என் விருப்பம் அனைத்தையும் அவன் நிறைவேற்றுவான்’ என்று சான்று பகர்ந்தார். தாம் அளித்த வாக்குறுதியின்படி கடவுள் அவருடைய வழிமரபிலிருந்தே இஸ்ரேலுக்கு இயேசு என்னும் மீட்பர் தோன்றச் செய்தார். அவருடைய வருகைக்கு முன்பே யோவான், ‘மனம்மாறி திருமுழுக்குப் பெறுங்கள்’ என்று இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும் பறைசாற்றி வந்தார்.

யோவான் தம் வாழ்க்கை என்னும் ஓட்டத்தை முடிக்கும் தறுவாயில் ‘நான் யார் என நீங்கள் நினைக்கிறீர்களோ அவரல்ல நான். இதோ, எனக்குப்பின் ஒருவர் வருகிறார்; அவருடைய மிதியடிகளை அவிழ்க்கவும் எனக்குத் தகுதியில்லை’ என்று கூறினார்.

சகோதரரே, ஆபிரகாமின் வழிவந்த மக்களே, இங்கு இருப்போருள் கடவுளுக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்போரே, இந்த மீட்புச் செய்தி நமக்குத்தான் அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளது.

A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To Luke (1, 57-66.80) 

When the time for Elizabeth was to give birth, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and family heard that the Lord had shown her the greatness of his mercy, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came for the circumcision of the child. They wanted to call him Zacharie, after his father's name. But his mother spoke up and said, “No, his name will be John. We told him: "No one in your family has that name!" The father was asked by signs what he wanted to call him. He was given a tablet on which he wrote: “John is his name. And everyone was amazed. Instantly his mouth opened, his tongue loosened: he was speaking and he was blessing God. Fear then seized all the people in the neighborhood and, throughout the mountainous region of Judea, all these events were being recounted. Everyone who learned them kept them in their hearts and said, “What will this child be? Indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.

The child was growing and his spirit was strengthening. He went to live in the desert until the day he made himself known to Israel.

In those days, in the synagogue of Antioch in Pisidia, Paul said to the Jews: "God raised up David as king for our fathers, and he bore him this testimony: I have found David the son of Jesse. ; it is a man according to my heart who will carry out all my wishes. From the offspring of David, God, according to the promise, brought out a savior for Israel: it is Jesus, whose advent John the Baptist prepared by proclaiming before him a baptism of conversion for all the people of Israel. At the end of his race, Jean said: “What you think I am, I am not.
