The Lord is compassion and love.

My soul, give thanks to the Lord

  all my being, bless his holy name.

  and never forget all his blessings.

The Lord is compassion and love.

It is he who forgives all your guilt,

  who heals every one of your ills,

who redeems your life from the grave,

  who crowns you with love and compassion.

The Lord is compassion and love.

The Lord is compassion and love,

  slow to anger and rich in mercy.

He does not treat us according to our sins

  nor repay us according to our faults.

The Lord is compassion and love.

As far as the east is from the west

  so far does he remove our sins.

As a father has compassion on his sons,

  the Lord has pity on those who fear him.

Do not lift your hand against the Lord's anointed

1 Samuel 26: 2,7-9,11-13, 22-23 

Saul set off and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, accompanied by three thousand men chosen from Israel to search for David in the wilderness of Ziph.

  In the dark David and Abishai made their way towards the force, where they found Saul lying asleep inside the camp, his spear stuck in the ground beside his head, with Abner and the troops lying round him.

  Then Abishai said to David, ‘Today God has put your enemy in your power; so now let me pin him to the ground with his own spear. Just one stroke! I will not need to strike him twice.’ David answered Abishai, ‘Do not kill him, for who can lift his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be without guilt? The Lord forbid that I should raise my hand against the Lord’s anointed! But now take the spear beside his head and the pitcher of water and let us go away.’ David took the spear and the pitcher of water from beside Saul’s head, and they made off. No one saw, no one knew, no one woke up; they were all asleep, for a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen on them.

  David crossed to the other side and halted on the top of the mountain a long way off; there was a wide space between them. He called out, ‘Here is the king’s spear. Let one of the soldiers come across and take it. The Lord repays everyone for his uprightness and loyalty. Today the Lord put you in my power, but I would not raise my hand against the Lord’s anointed.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு பேதுருவையும் யாக்கோபையும் யோவானையும் அழைத்து, ஓர் உயர்ந்த மலைக்கு அவர்களை மட்டும் தனிமையாகக் கூட்டிக் கொண்டு போனார். அங்கே அவர்கள்முன் அவர் தோற்றம் மாறினார். அவருடைய ஆடைகள் இவ்வுலகில் எந்தச் சலவைக்காரரும் வெளுக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு வெள்ளை வெளேரென ஒளிவீசின. அப்போது எலியாவும் மோசேயும் அவர்களுக்குத் தோன்றினர். இருவரும் இயேசுவோடு உரையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

பேதுரு இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து, “ரபி, நாம் இங்கேயே இருப்பது நல்லது. உமக்கு ஒன்றும் மோசேக்கு ஒன்றும் எலியாவுக்கு ஒன்றுமாக மூன்று கூடாரங்களை அமைப்போம்” என்றார். தாம் சொல்வது என்னவென்று அவருக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் மிகுந்த அச்சம் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

அப்போது ஒரு மேகம் வந்து அவர்கள் மேல் நிழலிட அந்த மேகத்தினின்று, “என் அன்பார்ந்த மைந்தர் இவரே; இவருக்குச் செவிசாயுங்கள்” என்று ஒரு குரல் ஒலித்தது. உடனடியாக அவர்கள் சுற்றுமுற்றும் பார்த்தார்கள். தங்கள் அருகில் இயேசு ஒருவரைத் தவிர வேறு எவரையும் காணவில்லை.

அவர்கள் மலையிலிருந்து இறங்கி வந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது அவர், “மானிட மகன் இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழும்வரை, நீங்கள் கண்டதை எவருக்கும் எடுத்துரைக்கக் கூடாது” என்று அவர்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டார். அவர்கள் இவ்வார்த்தையை அப்படியே மனத்தில் இருத்தி, ‘இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழுதல்’ என்றால் என்னவென்று ஒருவரோடு ஒருவர் பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “எலியாதான் முதலில் வரவேண்டும் என்று மறைநூல் அறிஞர் கூறுவதேன்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “எலியா முதலில் வந்து எல்லாவற்றையும் சீர்படுத்தப் போகிறார் என்று கூறுவது உண்மையே. ஆனால் மானிட மகன் பல துன்பங்கள்படவும் இகழ்ந்து தள்ளப்படவும் வேண்டுமென்று அவரைக் குறித்து எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளதே, அது எப்படி? ஆகவே நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: எலியா வந்துவிட்டார். அவர்கள் தாங்கள் விரும்பியவாறெல்லாம் அவருக்குச் செய்தார்கள். அவரைக் குறித்து மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளவாறே அவை நிகழ்ந்தன” என்றார்.

மேகம் வந்து அவர்கள்மேல் நிழலிட அந்த மேகத்தினின்று, “என் அன்பார்ந்த மைந்தர் இவரே; இவருக்குச் செவிசாயுங்கள்” என்று ஒரு குரல் ஒலித்தது. அல்லேலூயா.

என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, உங்களுள் பலர் போதகர் ஆக விரும்பவேண்டாம். போதகர்களாகிய நாங்கள் மிகக் கண்டிப்பான தீர்ப்புக்கு உள்ளாக வேண்டுமென உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். நாம் எல்லாருமே அடிக்கடி தவறுகிறோம்.

பேச்சில் தவறாதோர் நிறைவு பெற்றவராவர். அவர்களே தம் முழு உடலையும் கட்டுப்படுத்த வல்லவர்கள். குதிரைகளை அடக்க அவற்றின் வாயில் கடிவாளத்தைப் போடுகிறோம். இவ்வாறு குதிரைகளை முழுவதுமாகக் கட்டுப்படுத்துகிறோம். கப்பல்களைப் பாருங்கள். அவை எத்துணைப் பெரியனவாக இருந்தாலும், கடுங்காற்றால் அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டாலும், கப்பலோட்டுவோர் சிறியதொரு சுக்கானைக் கொண்டு தாம் விரும்பும் திசையை நோக்கி அவற்றைச் செலுத்துகின்றனர். மனித நாவும் அதைப் போல ஒரு சிறிய உறுப்புதான். ஆனால் பெரிய காரியங்களைச் சாதிப்பதாக அது பெருமையடிக்கிறது. பாருங்கள், சிறியதொரு தீப்பொறி எத்துணைப் பெரிய காட்டைக் கொளுத்திவிடுகிறது. நாவும் தீயைப் போன்றதுதான்.

நெறிகெட்ட உலகின் உருவே அது. நம்முடைய உறுப்புகளுள் ஒன்றாக அமைந்திருக்கும் இந்த நா நம் உடல் முழுவதையும் கறைப்படுத்துகிறது. அது நம் வாழ்க்கைச் சக்கரம் முழுவதையும் எரித்துவிடுகிறது; எரிப்பதற்கான நெருப்பை நரகத்திலிருந்தே பெறுகிறது. காட்டில் வாழ்வன, பறப்பன, ஊர்வன, கடலில் வாழ்வன ஆகிய எல்லா உயிரினங்களையும் மனிதர் அடக்கிவிடலாம்; அடக்கியும் உள்ளனர். ஆனால் நாவை அடக்க யாராலும் முடிவதில்லை. கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாத அளவுக்கு அது கொடியது; சாவை விளைவிக்கும் நஞ்சு நிறைந்தது. தந்தையாம் ஆண்டவரைப் போற்றுவது அந்நாவே; கடவுளின் சாயலாக உண்டாக்கப்பட்ட மனிதரைத் தூற்றுவதும் அந்நாவே. போற்றலும் தூற்றலும் ஒரே வாயிலிருந்து வருகின்றன. என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, இவ்வாறு இருத்தலாகாது.

Jesus was transfigured in their presence

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark 9: 2-13 

Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his clothes became dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus.

  As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead’ could mean. And they put this question to him, ‘Why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?’ ‘True,’ he said ‘Elijah is to come first and to see that everything is as it should be; yet how is it that the scriptures say about the Son of Man that he is to suffer grievously and be treated with contempt? However, I tell you that Elijah has come and they have treated him as they pleased, just as the scriptures say about him.’
