The Almighty has done great things for me

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 1:39-56 

Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’

  And Mary said:

‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord

and my spirit exults in God my saviour;

because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.

Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed,

for the Almighty has done great things for me.

Holy is his name,

and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him.

He has shown the power of his arm,

he has routed the proud of heart.

He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly.

The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away.

He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy

– according to the promise he made to our ancestors –

of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’

Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.

The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst

A Reading from the Book of Zephaniah 3:14-18 

Shout for joy, daughter of Zion,

Israel, shout aloud!

Rejoice, exult with all your heart,

daughter of Jerusalem!

The Lord has repealed your sentence;

he has driven your enemies away.

The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst;

you have no more evil to fear.

When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem:

Zion, have no fear,

do not let your hands fall limp.

The Lord your God is in your midst,

a victorious warrior.

He will exult with joy over you,

he will renew you by his love;

he will dance with shouts of joy for you

as on a day of festival.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசுவும் அவருடைய சீடரும் எரிகோவுக்கு வந்தனர். அவர்களும் திரளான மக்கள் கூட்டமும் எரிகோவை விட்டு வெளியே சென்றபோது, திமேயுவின் மகன் பர்த்திமேயு வழியோரம் அமர்ந்திருந்தார். பார்வையற்ற அவர் பிச்சை எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். நாசரேத்து இயேசுதாம் போகிறார் என்று அவர் கேள்விப்பட்டு, “இயேசுவே, தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்” என்று கத்தத் தொடங்கினார். பேசாதிருக்குமாறு பலர் அவரை அதட்டினர்; ஆனால் அவர், “தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்” என்று இன்னும் உரக்கக் கத்தினார்.

இயேசு நின்று, “அவரைக் கூப்பிடுங்கள்” என்று கூறினார். அவர்கள் பார்வையற்ற அவரைக் கூப்பிட்டு, “துணிவுடன் எழுந்து வாரும், இயேசு உம்மைக் கூப்பிடுகிறார்” என்றார்கள். அவரும் தம் மேலுடையை எறிந்துவிட்டு, குதித்தெழுந்து இயேசுவிடம் வந்தார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “உமக்கு நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார். பார்வையற்றவர் அவரிடம், “ரபூனி, நான் மீண்டும் பார்வை பெற வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் போகலாம்; உமது நம்பிக்கை உம்மை நலமாக்கிற்று” என்றார். உடனே அவர் மீண்டும் பார்வை பெற்று, அவரைப் பின்பற்றி அவருடன் வழி நடந்தார்.

அன்பிற்குரியவர்களே,

புதிதாய்ப் பிறந்த குழந்தைகள்போல, வஞ்சகமற்ற வார்த்தையாகிய பாலை அருந்த ஆர்வமுள்ளவர்களாய் இருங்கள். இதை அருந்துவதால் நீங்கள் மீட்பில் வளருவீர்கள்.

உயிருள்ள கல்லாகிய அவரை அணுகுங்கள். மனிதரால் உதறித் தள்ளப்பட்டதாயினும் கடவுளால் தெரிந்து கொள்ளப்பட்ட உயர் மதிப்புள்ள கல் அதுவே. நீங்களும் உயிருள்ள கற்களாயிருந்து, ஆவிக்குரிய இல்லமாகக் கட்டி எழுப்பப்படுவீர்களாக! இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வழியாய்க் கடவுளுக்கு உகந்த ஆவிக்குரிய பலிகளைப் படைக்கும் தூய குருக்களின் கூட்டமாகவும் இருப்பீர்களாக!

ஆனால், நீங்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட வழிமரபினர், அரச குருக்களின் கூட்டத்தினர், தூய மக்களினத்தினர்; அவரது உரிமைச் சொத்தான மக்கள். எனவே உங்களை இருளினின்று தமது வியத்தகு ஒளிக்கு அழைத்துள்ளவரின் மேன்மைமிக்க செயல்களை அறிவிப்பது உங்கள் பணி. முன்பு நீங்கள் ஒரு மக்களினமாய் இருக்கவில்லை; இப்பொழுது கடவுளுடைய மக்களாக இருக்கிறீர்கள். முன்பு இரக்கம் பெறாதவர்களாய் இருந்தீர்கள்; இப்பொழுதோ இரக்கம் பெற்றுள்ளீர்கள்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 10:46-52 

As Jesus left Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (that is, the son of Timaeus), a blind beggar, was sitting at the side of the road. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and to say, ‘Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me.’ And many of them scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted all the louder, ‘Son of David, have pity on me.’ Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him here.’ So they called the blind man. ‘Courage,’ they said ‘get up; he is calling you.’ So throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus. Then Jesus spoke, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Rabbuni,’ the blind man said to him ‘Master, let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your faith has saved you.’ And immediately his sight returned and he followed him along the road.
