அக்காலத்தில்

திருத்தூதர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து கூடித் தாங்கள் செய்தவை, கற்பித்தவை எல்லாம் அவருக்குத் தெரிவித்தார்கள். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் பாலை நிலத்திலுள்ள தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் சென்று சற்று ஓய்வெடுங்கள்” என்றார். ஏனெனில் பலர் வருவதும் போவதுமாய் இருந்ததால், உண்பதற்குக்கூட அவர்களுக்கு நேரம் கிடைக்கவில்லை.

அவ்வாறே அவர்கள் படகேறிப் பாலைநிலத்தில் உள்ள தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள் புறப்பட்டுப் போவதை மக்கள் பார்த்தார்கள். பலர் அவர்களை இன்னாரென்று தெரிந்துகொண்டு, எல்லா நகர்களிலிருந்தும் கால்நடையாகவே கூட்டமாய் ஓடி, அவர்களுக்கு முன் அங்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தனர்.

அவர் கரையில் இறங்கியபோது பெருந்திரளான மக்களைக் கண்டார். அவர்கள் ஆயரில்லா ஆடுகளைப்போல் இருந்ததால் அவர்கள்மீது பரிவு கொண்டு, அவர்களுக்குப் பலவற்றைக் கற்பித்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

சாலமோன் அரசர் பலி செலுத்துமாறு கிபயோனுக்குச் சென்றார். அங்கேதான் மிக முக்கியமான தொழுகைமேடு இருந்தது. அங்கிருந்த பலிபீடத்தின் மேல்தான் சாலமோன் ஆயிரம் எரிபலிகளைச் செலுத்தியிருந்தார். அன்றிரவு கிபயோனில் ஆண்டவர் சாலமோனுக்குக் கனவில் தோன்றினார். “உனக்கு என்ன வரம் வேண்டும்? கேள்!” என்று கடவுள் கேட்டார்.

அதற்குச் சாலமோன், “உம் அடியாராகிய என் தந்தை தாவீது உமது பார்வையில் உண்மையுடனும் நீதியுடனும் நேரிய உள்ளத்துடனும் நடந்து கொண்டார். அதனால் நீர் அவருக்குப் பேரன்பு காட்டினீர். அந்தப் பேரன்பை அவருக்கு என்றும் காட்டி வந்து, இன்று அவரது அரியணையில் வீற்றிருக்கும் மகனை அவருக்குத் தந்தீர். என் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரே, நீர் அடியேனை என் தந்தை தாவீதுக்குப் பதிலாக அரசனாக்கியுள்ளீர். நான் செய்வதறியாத சிறு பிள்ளை. இதோ! உமக்கென நீர் தெரிந்து கொண்ட திரளான மக்களிடையே அடியேன் இருக்கிறேன். அவர்கள் எண்ணிக் கணிக்க முடியாத மாபெரும் தொகையினர். எனவே, உம் மக்களுக்கு நீதி வழங்கவும் நன்மை தீமை பகுத்தறியவும் தேவையான ஞானம் நிறைந்த உள்ளத்தை அடியேனுக்குத் தந்தருளும்,. இல்லாவிடில், உமக்குரிய இம்மாபெரும் மக்கள் இனத்திற்கு நீதி வழங்க யாரால் இயலும்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

சாலமோன் இவ்வாறு கேட்டது ஆண்டவருக்கு உகந்ததாய் இருந்தது. கடவுள் அவரிடம், “நீடிய ஆயுளையோ, செல்வத்தையோ நீ கேட்கவில்லை. உன் எதிரிகளின் சாவையும் நீ விரும்பவில்லை. மாறாக, நீதி வழங்கத் தேவையான ஞானத்தை மட்டுமே கேட்டிருக்கிறாய். இதோ! நான் இப்பொழுது நீ கேட்டபடியே செய்கிறேன். உனக்கு நிகராக, உனக்கு முன்னே எவரும் இருந்ததில்லை. உனக்குப் பின்னே இருக்கப் போவதும் இல்லை. அந்த அளவுக்கு ஞானமும் பகுத்தறிவும் நிறைந்த உள்ளத்தை உனக்கு வழங்குகிறேன். இன்னும் நீ கேளாத செல்வத்தையும் புகழையும் உனக்குத் தருவேன். ஆகையால் உன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதிலும் உனக்கு இணையான அரசன் எவனும் இரான்.

The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him all they had done and taught. Then he said to them, ‘You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while’; for there were so many coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. So they went off in a boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But people saw them going, and many could guess where; and from every town they all hurried to the place on foot and reached it before them. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.

A Reading from the first book of Kings 3:4-13

King Solomon went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, since that was the greatest of the high places – Solomon offered a thousand holocausts on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared in a dream to Solomon during the night. God said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’ Solomon replied, ‘You showed great kindness to your servant David, my father, when he lived his life before you in faithfulness and justice and integrity of heart; you have continued this great kindness to him by allowing a son of his to sit on his throne today. Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership. Your servant finds himself in the midst of this people of yours that you have chosen, a people so many its number cannot be counted or reckoned. Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil, for who could govern this people of yours that is so great?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon should have asked for this. ‘Since you have asked for this’ the Lord said ‘and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies, but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself, here and now I do what you ask. I give you a heart wise and shrewd as none before you has had and none will have after you. What you have not asked I shall give you too: such riches and glory as no other king ever had.’

அக்காலத்தில் இயேசுவின் பெயர் எங்கும் பரவியது. ஏரோது அரசனும் அவரைப் பற்றிக் கேள்வியுற்றான். சிலர், ``இறந்த திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டுவிட்டார்; இதனால்தான் இந்த வல்ல செயல்கள் இவரால் ஆற்றப்படுகின்றன'' என்றனர். வேறு சிலர், ``இவர் எலியா'' என்றனர். மற்றும் சிலர், ``ஏனைய இறைவாக்கினரைப்போல் இவரும் ஓர் இறைவாக்கினரே'' என்றனர். இதைக் கேட்ட ஏரோது, ``இவர் யோவானே. அவர் தலையை நான் வெட்டச் செய்தேன். ஆனால் அவர் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டுவிட்டார்'' என்று கூறினான். இதே ஏரோது, தன் சகோதரனான பிலிப்பின் மனைவி ஏரோதியாவை மனைவியாக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தான்; அவள் பொருட்டு ஆள் அனுப்பி யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான். ஏனெனில் யோவான் ஏரோதிடம், ``உம் சகோதரர் மனைவியை நீர் வைத்திருப்பது முறை அல்ல'' எனச் சொல்லி வந்தார். அப்போது ஏரோதியா அவர்மீது காழ்ப்புணர்வு கொண்டு, அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பினாள்; ஆனால் அவளால் இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் யோவான் நேர்மையும் தூய்மையும் உள்ளவர் என்பதை ஏரோது அறிந்து அஞ்சி அவருக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு அளித்துவந்தான். அவர் சொல்லைக் கேட்டுமிகக் குழப்பமுற்ற போதிலும், அவருக்கு மனமுவந்து செவிசாய்த்தான். ஒரு நாள் ஏரோதியாவுக்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. ஏரோது தன் பிறந்த நாளில் அரசவையினருக்கும், ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர்களுக்கும் கலிலேய முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களுக்கும் ஒரு விருந்து படைத்தான். அப்போது ஏரோதியாவின் மகள் உள்ளே வந்து நடனமாடி ஏரோதையும் விருந்தினரையும் அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். அரசன் அச்சிறுமியிடம், ``உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் கேள், தருகிறேன்'' என்றான். ``நீ என்னிடம் எது கேட்டாலும், ஏன் என் அரசில் பாதியையே கேட்டாலும் உனக்குத் தருகிறேன்'' என்றும் ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறினான். அவள் வெளியே சென்று, ``நான் என்ன கேட்கலாம்?'' என்று தன் தாயை வினவினாள். அவள், ``திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையைக் கேள்'' என்றாள். உடனே சிறுமி அரசனிடம் விரைந்து வந்து, ``திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இப்போதே எனக்குக் கொடும்'' என்று கேட்டாள். இதைக் கேட்ட அரசன் மிக வருந்தினான். ஆனாலும் விருந்தினர் முன் தான் ஆணையிட்டதால் அவளுக்கு அதை மறுக்க விரும்பவில்லை. உடனே அரசன் ஒரு காவலனை அனுப்பி யோவானுடைய தலையைக் கொண்டு வருமாறு பணித்தான். அவன் சென்று சிறையில் அவருடைய தலையை வெட்டி, அதை ஒரு தட்டில் கொண்டு வந்து அச்சிறுமியிடம் கொடுக்க, அவளும் அதைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொடுத்தாள். இதைக் கேள்வியுற்ற யோவானுடைய சீடர்கள் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று ஒரு கல்லறையில் வைத்தார்கள்.

 நல்லுறவுப் பலியிலிருந்து கொழுப்பு பிரிக்கப்படுவதுபோல், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடமிருந்து தாவீது தெரிந்துகொள்ளப்பெற்றார். வெள்ளாடுகளுடன் விளையாடுவது போலச் சிங்கங்களுடன் விளையாடினார்; செம்மறி ஆடுகளுடன் விளையாடுவது போலக் கரடிகளுடன் விளையாடினார். பெருமை பாராட்டிய கோலியாத்தை நோக்கி இளைஞர் தாவீது தம் கைகளை ஓங்கிக் கவண் கல்லை வீசியபோது ஓர் அரக்கனைக் கொல்லவில்லையா? அதனால் மக்களது இழிநிலையை அகற்றவில்லையா? வலிமைமிக்க மனிதனைப் போரில் கொன்று தம் மக்களின் வலிமையை உயர்த்த உன்னத இறைவனாகிய ஆண்டவரை அவர் துணைக்கு அழைத்தார்; ஆண்டவரும் அவருடைய வலக்கைக்கு வலிமையூட்டினார். இவ்வாறு அவர் முறியடித்த பத்தாயிரம் பேருக்காக மக்கள் அவரை மாட்சிமைப்படுத்தினர்; ஆண்டவருடைய ஆசிகளுக்காக அவரைப் புகழ்ந்தனர்; மாட்சியின் மணிமுடியை அவருக்குச் சூட்டினர். எப்புறமும் அவர் பகைவர்களைத் துடைத்தழித்தார்; எதிரிகளான பெலிஸ்தியரை அடக்கி ஒழித்தார்; அவர்களுடைய வலிமையை அறவே நசுக்கினார். தம் எல்லாச் செயல்களிலும் மாட்சியைச் சாற்றும் சொற்களால் உன்னத இறைவனாகிய ஆண்டவருக்கு நன்றி செலுத்தினார்; தம் முழு உள்ளத்தோடும் புகழ்ப்பா இசைத்தார்; தம்மைப் படைத்தவர்மீது அன்பு செலுத்தினார். தங்களுடைய குரலால் இன்னிசை எழுப்பப் பாடகர்களைப் பலிபீடத்திற்குமுன் நிற்கச் செய்தார். திருவிழாக்களைச் சீரோடும் சிறப்போடும் கொண்டாடச் செய்தார்; ஆண்டவருடைய திருப்பெயரை அவர்கள் புகழ்ந்து பாடுவதால் திருவிடம் வைகறையிலிருந்து எதிரொலிக்கும்படி ஆண்டு முழுவதும் காலங்களைக் குறித்தார். ஆண்டவர் அவருடைய பாவங்களை நீக்கினார்; அவருடைய வலிமையை என்றென்றைக்கும் உயர்த்தினார்; மன்னர்களின் உடன்படிக்கையையும் இஸ்ரயேலில் மாட்சியின் அரியணையையும் அவருக்குக் கொடுத்தார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 6:14–29

At that time: King Herod heard of Jesus, for his name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” For it was Herod who had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you. And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

A Reading from the Book of Sirach  47:2-13 

As the fat is selected from the peace offering, so David was selected from the sons of Israel. He played with lions as with young goats and with bears as with lambs of the flock. In his youth did he not kill a giant, and take away reproach from the people, when he lifted his hand with a stone in the sling and struck down the boasting of Goliath? For he appealed to the Lord, the Most High, and he gave him strength in his right hand to slay a man mighty in war, to exalt the power of his people. So they glorified him for his ten thousands and praised him for the blessings of the Lord, when the glorious diadem was brought to him. For he wiped out his enemies on every side and annihilated his adversaries the Philistines; he crushed their power even to this day. In all that he did he gave thanks to the Holy One, the Most High, with ascriptions of glory; he sang praise with all his heart, and he loved his Maker. He placed singers before the altar to make sweet melody with their voices. He gave beauty to the feasts and arranged their times throughout the year, while they praised God’s holy name, and the sanctuary resounded from early morning. The Lord took away his sins and exalted his power for ever; he gave him the covenant of kings and a throne of glory in Israel.
