அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சுங்கச் சாவடியில் அமர்ந்திருந்த லேவி என்னும் பெயருடைய வரிதண்டுபவர் ஒருவரைக் கண்டார்; அவரிடம், “என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வா!” என்றார். அவர் அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட்டு எழுந்து இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றிச் சென்றார்.

இந்த லேவி தம் வீட்டில் அவருக்கு ஒரு பெரிய விருந்து அளித்தார். வரிதண்டுபவர்களும் மற்றவர்களும் பெருந்திரளாய் அவர்களோடு பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார்கள். பரிசேயர்களும் அவர்களைச் சேர்ந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களும் முணுமுணுத்து இயேசுவின் சீடரிடம், “வரிதண்டுபவர்க ளோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சேர்ந்து நீங்கள் உண்பதும் குடிப்பதும் ஏன்?” என்று கேட்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “நோயற்றவர்க்கு அல்ல, நோயுற்றவர்க்கே மருத்துவர் தேவை. நேர்மையாளர்களை அல்ல, பாவிகளையே மனம் மாற அழைக்க வந்தேன்” என்றார்.

And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. நீங்கள் நோன்பிருக்கும் நாளில் உங்கள் ஆதாயத்தையே நாடுகின்றீர்கள்; உங்கள் வேலையாள்கள் அனைவரையும் ஒடுக்குகின்றீர்கள். இதோ, வழக்காடவும், வீண் சண்டையிடவும், கொடும் கையால் தாக்கவுமே நீங்கள் நோன்பிருக்கிறீர்கள்! இன்றுபோல் நீங்கள் உண்ணா நோன்பிருந்தால் உங்கள் குரல் உன்னதத்தில் கேட்கப்படாது.

ஒருவன் தன்னை ஒடுக்கிக்கொள்ளும் நாளையா நான் உண்ணா நோன்பின் நாளாகத் தெரிந்துகொள்வது? ஒருவன் நாணலைப்போல் தன் தலையைத் தாழ்த்திச் சாக்கு உடையையும் சாம்பலையும் அணிந்து கொள்வதா எனக்கு ஏற்ற நோன்பு? இதையா நீங்கள் நோன்பு என்றும் ஆண்டவருக்கு உகந்த நாள் என்றும் அழைக்கின்றீர்கள்?

கொடுமைத் தளைகளை அவிழ்ப்பதும், நுகத்தின் பிணையல்களை அறுப்பதும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரை விடுதலை செய்து அனுப்புவதும், எவ்வகை நுகத்தையும் உடைப்பதும் அன்றோ நான் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் நோன்பு!

பசித்தோர்க்கு உங்கள் உணவைப் பகிர்ந்துகொடுப்பதும், தங்க இடமில்லா வறியோரை உங்கள் இல்லத்திற்கு அழைத்து வருவதும், உடையற்றோரைக் காணும்போது அவர்களுக்கு உடுக்கக் கொடுப்பதும், உங்கள் இனத்தாருக்கு உங்களை மறைத்துக்கொள்ளாதிருப்பதும் அன்றோ நான் விரும்பும் நோன்பு!

அப்பொழுது உன் ஒளி விடியல் போல் எழும்; விரைவில் உனக்கு நலமான வாழ்வு துளிர்க்கும்; உன் நேர்மை உனக்கு முன் செல்லும்; ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி உனக்குப் பின் சென்று காக்கும். அப்போது நீ ஆண்டவரை மன்றாடுவாய்; அவர் உனக்குப் பதிலளிப்பார்; நீ கூக்குரல் இடுவாய்; அவர் ‘இதோ! நான்’ என மறுமொழி தருவார்.

A Reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah 58:1-9 

Thus says the Lord God: “Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God. ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord? “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rearguard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
