அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தமது சொந்த ஊருக்கு வந்து அங்குள்ள தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் அவர்களுக்குக் கற்பித்தார். அதைக் கேட்டவர்கள் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தார்கள். அவர்கள், “எங்கிருந்து இந்த ஞானம் இவருக்கு வந்தது? எப்படி இந்த வல்ல செயல்களைச் செய்கிறார்? இவர் தச்சருடைய மகன் அல்லவா? இவருடைய தாய் மரியா என்பவர்தானே? யாக்கோபு, யோசேப்பு, சீமோன், யூதா ஆகியோர் இவருடைய சகோதரர் அல்லவா? இவர் சகோதரிகள் எல்லாரும் நம்மோடு இருக்கிறார்கள் அல்லவா? பின் இவருக்கு இவையெல்லாம் எங்கிருந்து வந்தன?” என்றார்கள். இவ்வாறு அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள அவர்கள் தயங்கினார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “தம் சொந்த ஊரிலும் வீட்டிலும் தவிர மற்றெங்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் மதிப்புப் பெறுவர்” என்றார். அவர்களுக்கு நம்பிக்கை இல்லாததால் அவர் அங்குப் பல வல்ல செயல்களைச் செய்யவில்லை.

ஆண்டவர் மோசேயிடம் கூறியது: இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம் நீ சொல்ல வேண்டியது: நான் உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கும் நாட்டில் நீங்கள் வந்து அறுவடை செய்யும்போது அறுவடையின் முதல் விளைச்சலான ஒரு கதிர்க் கட்டினைக் குருவிடம் கொண்டுவர வேண்டும். உங்கள் சார்பாக ஏற்கத் தக்கதாக, குரு அந்தத் தானியக் கதிர்க்கட்டினை, ஓய்வு நாளுக்குப் பின்வரும் அடுத்த நாளில் ஆண்டவரின் திருமுன் ஆரத்திப் பலியாக்குவார்.

அந்த ஏழாம் மாதம் பத்தாம் நாள், பாவக் கழுவாய் நாள்; புனித சபை கூடும் நாள். அன்று நீங்கள் உங்களையே தாழ்த்திக் கொண்டு, ஆண்டவருக்கு எரிபலி செலுத்த வேண்டும்.

And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

The LORD said to Moses, “These are the appointed feasts of the LORD, the holy convocations, which you shall proclaim at the time appointed for them. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, is the LORD’s passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread to the LORD; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work. But you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD seven days; on the seventh day is a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work.” And the LORD said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, When you come into the land which I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest; and he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, that you may find acceptance; on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it. “And you shall count from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven full weeks shall they be, counting fifty days to the morrow after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a cereal offering of new grain to the LORD.

ஆண்டவர் கட்டளையிட்டபடியெல்லாம் மோசே செயல்பட்டார். இரண்டாம் ஆண்டில், முதல் மாதம், முதல் தேதியன்று திருஉறைவிடம் எழுப்பப்பட்டது. மோசே திருஉறைவிடத்தை எழுப்பினார்; பாதப் பொருத்துகளை வைத்து அதன்மேல் சட்டங்களைப் பொருத்தினார், குறுக்குச் சட்டங்களையும் பொருத்தினார்; தூண்களையும் நிறுத்தினார். திருஉறைவிடத்தின்மேல் அவர் கூடாரத்தை விரித்தார்; அதற்குமேல் கூடார மேல்விரிப்பை அமைத்தார். இதுவும் ஆண்டவர் மோசேக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டபடியே செய்யப்பட்டது. உடன்படிக்கைப் பலகையை அவர் எடுத்து, அதைப் பேழையில் வைத்தார். தண்டுகளைப் பேழையில் செருகினார். இரக்கத்தின் இருக்கையைப் பேழையின்மேல் வைத்தார். திருஉறைவிடத்தினுள் பேழை எடுத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டது. திருத்தூயகத் திரை தொங்கவிடப்பட்டு, உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழை மறைக்கப்பட்டது. இதையும் ஆண்டவர் கட்டளையிட்டபடியே மோசே செய்தார்.

பின்பு, மேகம் சந்திப்புக் கூடாரத்தை மூடிற்று; ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி திருஉறைவிடத்தை நிரப்பிற்று. சந்திப்புக் கூடாரத்தின் மேலே மேகம் நின்றிருந்ததாலும், ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி திருஉறைவிடத்தை நிரப்பியதாலும் மோசே உள்ளே நுழைய முடியாமல் போயிற்று. இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் தங்கள் பயணத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு கட்டத்திலும், மேகம் திருஉறைவிடத்தை விட்டு எழும்பும் போதெல்லாம் புறப்பட்டுச் செல்வார்கள். மேகம் எழும்பாதிருக்கும் போதோ, அது மேலே எழும்பும் நாள் வரை, அவர்கள் புறப்பட மாட்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் பயணத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு கட்டத்திலும் திருஉறைவிடத்தின்மேல் பகலில் ஆண்டவரின் மேகம் இருப்பதையும், இரவிலோ அதில் நெருப்பு இருப்பதையும் இஸ்ரயேல் வீட்டார் காண்பார்கள்.

Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

  ‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’

  When Jesus had finished these parables he left the district.

A reading from the book of Exodus 40:16-21,34-38 

Moses did exactly as the Lord had directed him. The tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month in the second year. Moses erected the tabernacle. He fixed the sockets for it, put up its frames, put its crossbars in position, set up its posts. He spread the tent over the tabernacle and on top of this the covering for the tent, as the Lord had directed Moses. He took the Testimony and placed it inside the ark. He set the shafts to the ark and placed the throne of mercy on it. He brought the ark into the tabernacle and put the screening veil in place; thus he screened the ark of the Lord, as the Lord had directed Moses.

  The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because of the cloud that rested on it and because of the glory of the Lord that filled the tabernacle.

  At every stage of their journey, whenever the cloud rose from the tabernacle the sons of Israel would resume their march. If the cloud did not rise, they waited and would not march until it did. For the cloud of the Lord rested on the tabernacle by day, and a fire shone within the cloud by night, for all the House of Israel to see. And so it was for every stage of their journey.

A reading from the book of Exodus 34: 29-35 

When Moses came down from the mountain of Sinai – as he came down from the mountain, Moses had the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands – he did not know that the skin on his face was radiant after speaking with the Lord. And when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, the skin on his face shone so much that they would not venture near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron with all the leaders of the community came back to him; and he spoke to them. Then all the sons of Israel came closer, and he passed on to them all the orders that the Lord had given him on the mountain of Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever he went into the Lord’s presence to speak with him, Moses would remove the veil until he came out again. And when he came out, he would tell the sons of Israel what he had been ordered to pass on to them, and the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he returned to speak with the Lord.

அந்நாள்களில்

மோசே பாளையத்துக்கு வெளியே கூடாரத்தைத் தூக்கிச் செல்வதும் பாளையத்திற்கு வெகு தூரத்தில் கூடாரம் அடிப்பதும் வழக்கம். அதற்கு அவர் சந்திப்புக் கூடாரம் என்று பெயரிட்டார். ஆண்டவரைத் தேடும் யாவரும் பாளையத்துக்கு வெளியே உள்ள சந்திப்புக் கூடாரத்திற்குச் செல்வர்.

மோசே கூடாரத்துக்குச் செல்லும் போதெல்லாம் மக்கள் அனைவரும் அவரவர் கூடார நுழைவாயிலில் எழுந்து நின்று கொண்டு, அவர் கூடாரத்தில் நுழையும்வரை அவரைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டேயிருப்பர். மோசே கூடாரத்தில் நுழைந்ததும், மேகத்தூண் இறங்கி வந்து கூடார நுழைவாயிலில் நின்று கொள்ளும். அப்போது கடவுள் மோசேயிடம் பேசுவார். கூடார நுழைவாயிலில் மேகத்தூண் நின்று கொண்டிருப்பதை மக்கள் அனைவரும் காண்பர். அப்போது அவரவர் கூடார நுழைவாயிலில் நின்று கொண்டே மக்கள் அனைவரும் வணங்கித் தொழுவர். ஒருவன் தன் நண்பனிடம் பேசுவது போலவே ஆண்டவரும் முகமுகமாய் மோசேயிடம் பேசுவார். பின்னர் மோசே பாளையத்துக்குத் திரும்புவார். இளைஞனும் நூனின் மகனுமான யோசுவா என்ற அவருடைய உதவியாளர் கூடாரத்தை விட்டு அகலாமல் இருப்பார்.

ஆண்டவர் மேகத்தில் இறங்கி வந்து, அங்கே அவர் பக்கமாய் நின்று கொண்டு, ‘ஆண்டவர்’ என்ற பெயரை அறிவித்தார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர் அவர் முன்னிலையில் கடந்து செல்கையில், “ஆண்டவர்! ஆண்டவர்! இரக்கமும் பரிவும் உள்ள இறைவன்; சினம் கொள்ளத் தயங்குபவர்; பேரன்பு மிக்கவர்; நம்பிக்கைக்கு உரியவர். ஆயிரம் தலைமுறைக்கும் பேரன்பு செய்பவர்; கொடுமையையும் குற்றத்தையும் பாவத்தையும் மன்னிப்பவர்; ஆயினும், தண்டனைக்குத் தப்பவிடாமல் தந்தையரின் கொடுமையைப் பிள்ளைகள் மேலும் பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகள் மேலும், மூன்றாம் நான்காம் தலைமுறைவரை தண்டித்துத் தீர்ப்பவர்” என அறிவித்தார். உடனே மோசே விரைந்து தரைமட்டும் தாழ்ந்து வணங்கி, “என் தலைவரே! நான் உண்மையிலேயே உம் பார்வையில் தயை பெற்றவன் என்றால், இவர்கள் வணங்காக் கழுத்துள்ள மக்கள் எனினும், என் தலைவரே! நீர் எங்களோடு வந்தருளும். எங்கள் கொடுமையையும் எங்கள் பாவத்தையும் மன்னித்து எங்களை உம் உரிமைச் சொத்தாக்கிக் கொள்ளும்” என்றார்.

அவர் அங்கே நாற்பது பகலும் நாற்பது இரவும் ஆண்டவருடன் இருந்தார். அப்போது அவர் அப்பம் உண்ணவும் இல்லை; தண்ணீர் பருகவும் இல்லை. உடன்படிக்கையின் வார்த்தைகளான பத்துக் கட்டளைகளை அவர் பலகைகளின் மேல் எழுதினார்.

'They are a headstrong people; but forgive us our faults'

A reading from the book of Exodus 33: 7-11, 34:5-9,28.

Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, at some distance from the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting. Anyone who had to consult the Lord would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, all the people would rise. Every man would stand at the door of his tent and watch Moses until he reached the Tent; the pillar of cloud would come down and station itself at the entrance to the Tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. When they saw the pillar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent, all the people would rise and bow low, each at the door of his tent. The Lord would speak with Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would turn back to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the Tent.

  And the Lord descended in the form of a cloud, and Moses stood with him there.

  He called on the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness; for thousands he maintains his kindness, forgives faults, transgression, sin; yet he lets nothing go unchecked, punishing the father’s fault in the sons and in the grandsons to the third and fourth generation.’ And Moses bowed down to the ground at once and worshipped. ‘If I have indeed won your favour, Lord,’ he said ‘let my Lord come with us, I beg. True, they are a headstrong people, but forgive us our faults and our sins, and adopt us as your heritage.’

  Moses stayed there with the Lord for forty days and forty nights, eating and drinking nothing. He inscribed on the tablets the words of the Covenant – the Ten Words.

அவர் அவர்களுக்குக் கூறிய வேறு ஓர் உவமை: “பெண் ஒருவர் புளிப்பு மாவை எடுத்து மூன்று மரக்கால் மாவில் பிசைந்து வைத்தார். மாவு முழுவதும் புளிப்பேறியது. விண்ணரசு இப்புளிப்பு மாவுக்கு ஒப்பாகும்."

இவற்றை எல்லாம் இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்துக்கு உவமைகள் வாயிலாக உரைத்தார். உவமைகள் இன்றி அவர் அவர்களோடு எதையும் பேசவில்லை. “நான் உவமைகள் வாயிலாகப் பேசுவேன்; உலகத் தோற்றமுதல் மறைந்திருப்பவற்றை விளக்குவேன்” என்று இறைவாக்கினர் உரைத்தது இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது.

அந்நாள்களில்

மோசே திரும்பி மலையிலிருந்து இறங்கி வந்தார். முன், பின் இரு புறமும் எழுதப்பட்ட உடன்படிக்கைப் பலகைகள் இரண்டும் அவர் கையில் இருந்தன. அப்பலகைகள் கடவுளால் செய்யப்பட்டவை. பலகைகள் மேல் பொறிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த எழுத்தும் கடவுள் எழுதியதே. அந்நேரத்தில் மக்கள் எழுப்பிய கூச்சலைக் கேட்ட யோசுவா மோசேயை நோக்கி, “இது பாளையத்திலிருந்து எழும் போர் முழக்கம்” என்றார். அதற்கு மோசே, “இது வெற்றி முழக்கமோ தோல்விக் குரலோ அன்று. களியாட்டம்தான் எனக்குக் கேட்கிறது” என்றார்.

பாளையத்தை அவர் நெருங்கி வந்தபோது கன்றுக்குட்டியையும் நடனங்களையும் கண்டார். மோசேக்குச் சினம் மூண்டது. அவர் தம் கையிலிருந்து பலகைகளை மலையடிவாரத்தில் வீசியெறிந்து உடைத்துப் போட்டார். அவர்கள் செய்து வைத்திருந்த கன்றுக்குட்டியை எடுத்து நெருப்பில் சுட்டெரித்து மிருதுவான பொடியாகு மட்டும் அதை இடித்துத் தண்ணீரில் தூவி, இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களைக் குடிக்கச் செய்தார்.

பின்னர் மோசே ஆரோனை நோக்கி, “இம்மக்கள் உமக்கு என்ன செய்தார்கள்? இவர்கள் மேல் பெரும் பாவம் வந்துசேரச் செய்துவிட்டீரே!” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு ஆரோன், “என் தலைவராகிய நீர் சினம் கொள்ள வேண்டாம். இம்மக்கள் பொல்லாதவர்கள் என்பது உமக்குத் தெரியுமே! அவர்கள் என்னை நோக்கி, ‘எங்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டும் தெய்வங்களைச் செய்து கொடும். எங்களை எகிப்து நாட்டினின்று நடத்தி வந்த அந்த ஆள் மோசேக்கு என்ன ஆயிற்றோ தெரியவில்லை’ என்றனர். நானும் அவர்களிடம் ‘பொன் அணிந்திருப்பவர்கள் கழற்றித் தாருங்கள்’ என்றேன். அவர்களும் என்னிடம் தந்தனர். நான் அதனை நெருப்பில் போட, இந்தக் கன்றுக்குட்டி வெளிப்பட்டது” என்றார்.

மறுநாள் மோசே மக்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் பெரும் பாவம் செய்து விட்டீர்கள்; இப்போது நான் மலைமேல் ஏறி ஆண்டவரிடம் செல்லப் போகிறேன். அங்கே ஒருவேளை உங்கள் பாவத்திற்காக நான் கழுவாய் செய்ய இயலும்” என்றார். அவ்வாறே மோசே ஆண்டவரிடம் திரும்பிவந்து, ‘ஐயோ, இம்மக்கள் தங்களுக்காகப் பொன்னால் தெய்வங்களை உருவாக்கிப் பெரும்பாவம் செய்துவிட்டார்கள். இப்போதும், நீர் அவர்கள் பாவத்தை மன்னித்தருளும். இல்லையேல், நீர் எழுதிய உம் நூலிலிருந்து என் பெயரை நீக்கிவிடும்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவரோ மோசேயிடம், “எவன் எனக்கு எதிராகப் பாவம் செய்தானோ, அவனையே என் நூலிலிருந்து நீக்கி விடுவேன். நீ இப்போதே புறப்பட்டுப் போ. உன்னிடம் நான் கூறியுள்ளபடி மக்களை நடத்திச் செல். இதோ என் தூதர் உன் முன்னே செல்வார். ஆயினும் நான் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்கும் நாளில் அவர்கள் பாவத்தை அவர்கள் மேலேயே சுமத்துவேன்” என்றார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 13: 31-35 

Jesus put a parable before the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the biggest shrub of all and becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come and shelter in its branches.’

  He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.’

  In all this Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables; indeed, he would never speak to them except in parables. This was to fulfil the prophecy:

I will speak to you in parables

and expound things hidden since the foundation of the world.

The golden calf

A reading from the book of Exodus 32:15-24,30-34 

Moses made his way back down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, tablets inscribed on both sides, inscribed on the front and on the back. These tablets were the work of God, and the writing on them was God’s writing engraved on the tablets.

  Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting. ‘There is the sound of battle in the camp’, he told Moses. Moses answered him:

‘No song of victory is this sound,

no wailing for defeat this sound;

it is the sound of chanting that I hear.’

As he approached the camp and saw the calf and the groups dancing, Moses’ anger blazed. He threw down the tablets he was holding and broke them at the foot of the mountain. He seized the calf they had made and burned it, grinding it into powder which he scattered on the water; and he made the sons of Israel drink it. To Aaron Moses said, ‘What has this people done to you, for you to bring such a great sin on them?’ ‘Let not my lord’s anger blaze like this’ Aaron answered. ‘You know yourself how prone this people is to evil. They said to me, “Make us a god to go at our head; this Moses, the man who brought us up from Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” So I said to them, “Who has gold?,” and they took it off and brought it to me. I threw it into the fire and out came this calf.’

  On the following day Moses said to the people, ‘You have committed a grave sin. But now I shall go up to the Lord: perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.’ And Moses returned to the Lord. ‘I am grieved,’ he cried ‘this people has committed a grave sin, making themselves a god of gold. And yet, if it pleased you to forgive this sin of theirs...! But if not, then blot me out from the book that you have written.’ The Lord answered Moses, “It is the man who has sinned against me that I shall blot out from my book. Go now, lead the people to the place of which I told you. My angel shall go before you but, on the day of my visitation, I shall punish them for their sin.’

இயேசு ஓரிடத்தில் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அது முடிந்ததும் அவருடைய சீடர்களுள் ஒருவர் அவரை நோக்கி, “ஆண்டவரே, யோவான் தம் சீடருக்கு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டக் கற்றுக்கொடுத்ததுபோல் எங்களுக்கும் கற்றுக்கொடும்” என்றார். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டும்பொழுது இவ்வாறு சொல்லுங்கள்: தந்தையே, உமது பெயர் தூயது எனப் போற்றப்பெறுக! உமது ஆட்சி வருக! எங்கள் அன்றாட உணவை நாள்தோறும் எங்களுக்குத் தாரும். எங்களுக்கு எதிராகக் குற்றம் செய்வோர் அனைவரையும் நாங்கள் மன்னிப்பதால் எங்கள் பாவங்களையும் மன்னியும். எங்களைச் சோதனைக்கு உட்படுத்தாதேயும். தீயோனிடமிருந்து எங்களை விடுவித்தருளும்” என்று கற்பித்தார்.

மேலும் அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கிப் பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்: “உங்களுள் ஒருவர் தம் நண்பரிடம் நள்ளிரவில் சென்று, ‘நண்பா, மூன்று அப்பங்களை எனக்குக் கடனாகக் கொடு. என்னுடைய நண்பர் ஒருவர் பயணம் செய்யும் வழியில் என்னிடம் வந்திருக்கிறார். அவருக்குக் கொடுக்க என்னிடம் ஒன்றுமில்லை’ என்று சொல்வதாக வைத்துக் கொள்வோம். உள்ளே இருப்பவர், ‘எனக்குத் தொல்லை கொடுக்காதே; ஏற்கெனவே கதவு பூட்டியாயிற்று; என் பிள்ளைகளும் என்னோடு படுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். நான் எழுந்திருந்து உனக்குத் தர முடியாது’ என்பார். எனினும் அவர் விடாப்பிடியாய்க் கதவைத் தட்டிக்கொண்டேயிருந்தால், அவர் தம் நண்பர் என்பதற்காக எழுந்து கொடுக்காவிட்டாலும், அவரது தொல்லையின் பொருட்டாவது எழுந்து அவருக்குத் தேவையானதைக் கொடுப்பார் என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்.

மேலும் நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: கேளுங்கள், உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; தேடுங்கள், நீங்கள் கண்டடைவீர்கள்; தட்டுங்கள் உங்களுக்குத் திறக்கப்படும். ஏனெனில் கேட்போர் எல்லாரும் பெற்றுக் கொள்கின்றனர்; தேடுவோர் கண்டடைகின்றனர்; தட்டுவோருக்குத் திறக்கப்படும். பிள்ளை மீனைக் கேட்டால் உங்களுள் எந்தத் தந்தையாவது மீனுக்குப் பதிலாகப் பாம்பைக் கொடுப்பாரா? முட்டையைக் கேட்டால் அவர் தேளைக் கொடுப்பாரா? தீயோர்களாகிய நீங்களே உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு நற்கொடைகள் அளிக்க அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்கள். அப்படியானால் விண்ணகத் தந்தை தம்மிடம் கேட்போருக்குத் தூய ஆவியைக் கொடுப்பது எத்துணை உறுதி!”

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “சோதோம் கொமோராவுக்கு எதிராகப் பெரும் கண்டனக் குரல் எழும்பியுள்ளது. அவற்றின் பாவம் மிகவும் கொடியது. என்னை வந்தடைந்த கண்டனக் குரலின்படி அவர்கள் நடந்து கொண்டார்களா இல்லையா என்று அறிந்துகொள்ள நான் இறங்கிச் சென்று பார்ப்பேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது அந்த மனிதர்கள் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுச் சோதோமை நோக்கிச் சென்றார்கள். ஆபிரகாமோ ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆபிரகாம் அவரை அணுகிக் கூறியதாவது: “தீயவரோடு நீதிமான்களையும் சேர்த்து அழித்து விடுவீரோ? ஒருவேளை நகரில் ஐம்பது நீதிமான்களாவது இருக்கலாம். அப்படியானால் அதிலிருக்கிற ஐம்பது நீதிமான்களை முன்னிட்டாவது அவ்விடத்தைக் காப்பாற்றாமல் அழிப்பீரோ? தீயவனோடு நீதிமானையும் அழிப்பது உமக்கு ஏற்றதன்று; நீதிமானையும் தீயவனையும் சமமாக நடத்துவது உமக்கு உகந்ததன்று. அனைத்துலகிற்கும் நீதி வழங்குபவர் நீதியுடன் தீர்ப்பு வழங்க வேண்டாமோ?” என்றார்.

அதற்கு ஆண்டவர், “நான் சோதோம் நகரில் ஐம்பது நீதிமான்கள் இருப்பதாகக் கண்டால், அவர்களின் பொருட்டு முழுவதையும் காப்பாற்றுவேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம் மறுமொழியாக, “தூசியும் சாம்பலுமான நான் என் தலைவரோடு பேசத் துணிந்து விட்டேன்; ஒருவேளை அந்த ஐம்பது நீதிமான்களில் ஐந்து பேர் குறைவாயிருக்கலாம். ஐந்து பேர் குறைவதை முன்னிட்டு நகர் முழுவதையும் அழிப்பீரோ?” என்றார். அதற்கு அவர், “நான் நாற்பத்தைந்து பேரை அங்கே கண்டால் அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

மீண்டும் அவர், உரையாடலைத் தொடர்ந்து, “ஒருவேளை அங்கே நாற்பது பேர் மட்டும் காணப்பட்டால் என்ன செய்வீர்?” என்று கேட்க, ஆண்டவர், “நாற்பது நீதிமான்களின் பொருட்டு அதனை அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம்: “என் தலைவரே, நான் இன்னும் பேச வேண்டும்; சினமடைய வேண்டாம். ஒருவேளை அங்கே முப்பது பேரே காணப்பட்டால்?” என, அவரும் “முப்பது பேர் அங்குக் காணப்பட்டால் அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்று பதிலளித்தார்.

அவர், “என் தலைவரே, உம்மோடு அடியேன் பேசத் துணிந்து விட்டேன். ஒருவேளை அங்கு இருபது பேரே காணப்பட்டால்?” என, அதற்கு அவர், “இருபது பேரை முன்னிட்டு நான் அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு அவர், “என் தலைவரே, சினமடைய வேண்டாம்; இன்னும் ஒரே ஒரு தடவை மட்டும் என்னைப் பேசவிடும். ஒருவேளை அங்கு பத்துப் பேர் மட்டும் காணப்பட்டால்?” என, அவர், “அந்த பத்துப் பேரை முன்னிட்டு அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished one of his disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’

  He said to them, ‘Say this when you pray:

‘“Father, may your name be held holy,

your kingdom come;

give us each day our daily bread,

and forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us.

And do not put us to the test.”’

He also said to them:

  ‘Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night to say, “My friend, lend me three loaves, because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him”; and the man answers from inside the house, “Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up to give it you.” I tell you, if the man does not get up and give it him for friendship’s sake, persistence will be enough to make him get up and give his friend all he wants.

  ‘So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Colossians 2: 12-14 

You have been buried with Christ, when you were baptised; and by baptism, too, you have been raised up with him through your belief in the power of God who raised him from the dead. You were dead, because you were sinners and had not been circumcised: he has brought you to life with him, he has forgiven us all our sins.

  He has overridden the Law, and cancelled every record of the debt that we had to pay; he has done away with it by nailing it to the cross.

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 18: 20-32 

The Lord said, ‘How great an outcry there is against Sodom and Gomorrah! How grievous is their sin! I propose to go down and see whether or not they have done all that is alleged in the outcry against them that has come up to me. I am determined to know.’

  The men left there and went to Sodom while Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Approaching him he said, ‘Are you really going to destroy the just man with the sinner? Perhaps there are fifty just men in the town. Will you really overwhelm them, will you not spare the place for the fifty just men in it? Do not think of doing such a thing: to kill the just man with the sinner, treating just and sinner alike! Do not think of it! Will the judge of the whole earth not administer justice?’ the Lord replied, ‘If at Sodom I find fifty just men in the town, I will spare the whole place because of them.’

  Abraham replied, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this to my Lord, I who am dust and ashes. But perhaps the fifty just men lack five: will you destroy the whole city for five?’ ‘No,’ he replied ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five just men there.’ Again Abraham said to him, ‘Perhaps there will only be forty there.’ ‘I will not do it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the forty.’

  Abraham said, ‘I trust my Lord will not be angry, but give me leave to speak: perhaps there will only be thirty there.’ ‘I will not do it’ he replied ‘if I find thirty there.’ He said, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this, but perhaps there will only be twenty there.’ ‘I will not destroy it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the twenty.’ He said, ‘I trust my Lord will not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there will only be ten.’ ‘I will not destroy it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the ten.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எடுத்துரைத்த வேறு ஓர் உவமை: “விண்ணரசைப் பின்வரும் நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு ஒப்பிடலாம். ஒருவர் தம் வயலில் நல்ல விதைகளை விதைத்தார். அவருடைய ஆள்கள் தூங்கும்போது அவருடைய பகைவன் வந்து கோதுமைகளுக்கு இடையே களைகளை விதைத்துவிட்டுப் போய்விட்டான்.

பயிர் வளர்ந்து கதிர்விட்டபோது களைகளும் காணப்பட்டன. நிலக்கிழாருடைய பணியாளர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து, ‘ஐயா, நீர் உமது வயலில் நல்ல விதைகளை அல்லவா விதைத்தீர்? அதில் களைகள் காணப்படுவது எப்படி?’ என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், ‘இது பகைவனுடைய வேலை’ என்றார். உடனே பணியாளர்கள் அவரிடம், ‘நாங்கள் போய் அவற்றைப் பறித்துக்கொண்டு வரலாமா? உம் விருப்பம் என்ன?’ என்று கேட்டார்கள்.

அவர், ‘வேண்டாம், களைகளைப் பறிக்கும்போது அவற்றோடு சேர்த்துக் கோதுமையையும் நீங்கள் பிடுங்கிவிடக் கூடும். அறுவடை வரை இரண்டையும் வளர விடுங்கள். அறுவடை நேரத்தில் அறுவடை செய்வோரிடம், முதலில் களைகளைப் பறித்துக்கொண்டு வந்து எரிப்பதற்கெனக் கட்டுகளாகக் கட்டுங்கள். கோதுமையையோ என் களஞ்சியத்தில் சேர்த்து வையுங்கள் என்று கூறுவேன்’ என்றார்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

மோசே மக்களிடம் வந்து ஆண்டவர் சொன்ன அனைத்து வார்த்தைகளையும் விதிமுறைகளையும் அறிவித்தார். மக்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே குரலாக, “ஆண்டவர் கூறிய வார்த்தைகள் அனைத்தையும் நாங்கள் செயல்படுத்துவோம்” என்று விடையளித்தனர்.

மோசே ஆண்டவரின் வாக்குகள் அனைத்தையும் எழுதி வைத்தார். அதிகாலையில் அவர் எழுந்து மலையடிவாரத்தில் ஒரு பலிபீடத்தையும், இஸ்ரயேலின் பன்னிரண்டு குலங்களுக்காகப் பன்னிரண்டு தூண்களையும் எழுப்பினார். அவர் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் இளைஞர்களை அனுப்பி வைக்க, அவர்களும் ஆண்டவருக்கு எரிபலிகள் செலுத்தினர். மாடுகளை நல்லுறவுப் பலிகளாகவும் ஆண்டவருக்குப் பலியிட்டனர். மோசே இரத்தத்தில் ஒரு பாதியை எடுத்துக் கலங்களில் விட்டு வைத்தார். மறு பாதியைப் பலிபீடத்தின் மேல் தெளித்தார். அவர் உடன்படிக்கையின் ஏட்டை எடுத்து மக்கள் காதுகளில் கேட்கும்படி வாசித்தார். அவர்கள், “ஆண்டவர் கூறிய அனைத்தையும் நாங்கள் செயல்படுத்திக் கீழ்ப்படிந்திருப்போம்” என்றனர். அப்போது மோசே இரத்தத்தை எடுத்து மக்கள்மேல் தெளித்து, “இவ்வனைத்து வார்த்தைக்குமிணங்க, ஆண்டவர் உங்களோடு செய்துள்ள உடன்படிக்கையின் இரத்தம் இதோ” என்றார்.

Jesus put another parable before the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everybody was asleep his enemy came, sowed darnel all among the wheat, and made off. When the new wheat sprouted and ripened, the darnel appeared as well. The owner’s servants went to him and said, “Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? If so, where does the darnel come from?” “Some enemy has done this” he answered. And the servants said, “Do you want us to go and weed it out?” But he said, “No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. Let them both grow till the harvest; and at harvest time I shall say to the reapers: First collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burnt, then gather the wheat into my barn.”’

Moses went and told the people all the commands of the Lord and all the ordinances. In answer, all the people said with one voice, ‘We will observe all the commands that the Lord has decreed.’ Moses put all the commands of the Lord into writing, and early next morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain, with twelve standing-stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he directed certain young Israelites to offer holocausts and to immolate bullocks to the Lord as communion sacrifices. Half of the blood Moses took up and put into basins, the other half he cast on the altar. And taking the Book of the Covenant he read it to the listening people, and they said, ‘We will observe all that the Lord has decreed; we will obey.’ Then Moses took the blood and cast it towards the people. This’ he said ‘is the blood of the Covenant that the Lord has made with you, containing all these rules.’

செபதேயுவின் மனைவி தம் மக்களோடு ஒரு வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்குமாறு இயேசுவிடம் வந்து பணிந்து நின்றார். “உமக்கு என்ன வேண்டும்?” என்று இயேசு அவரிடம் கேட்டார்.

அவர், “நீர் ஆட்சி புரியும்போது என் மக்களாகிய இவர்கள் இருவருள் ஒருவன் உமது அரியணையின் வலப்புறமும் இன்னொருவன் இடப்புறமும் அமரச் செய்யும்” என்று வேண்டினார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “நீங்கள் என்ன கேட்கிறீர்கள் என உங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. நான் குடிக்கப்போகும் துன்பக் கிண்ணத்தில் உங்களால் குடிக்க இயலுமா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள், “எங்களால் இயலும்” என்றார்கள்.

அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “ஆம், என் கிண்ணத்தில் நீங்கள் குடிப்பீர்கள். ஆனால் என் வலப்புறத்திலும் இடப்புறத்திலும் அமரும்படி அருளுவதோ எனது செயல் அல்ல; மாறாக அவ்விடங்களை என் தந்தை யாருக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்திருக்கிறாரோ அவர்களுக்கே அவை அருளப்படும்” என்றார்.

இதைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்த பத்துப்பேரும் அச்சகோதரர் இருவர் மீதும் கோபங்கொண்டனர்.

இயேசு அவர்களை வரவழைத்து, “பிற இனத்தவரின் தலைவர்கள் மக்களை அடக்கி ஆளுகின்றார்கள். உயர்குடிமக்கள் அவர்கள்மீது தங்கள் அதிகாரத்தைக் காட்டுகிறார்கள்; இதை நீங்கள் அறிவீர்கள். உங்களிடையே அப்படி இருக்கக்கூடாது. உங்களுள் பெரியவராக இருக்க விரும்புகிறவர் உங்கள் தொண்டராய் இருக்கட்டும். உங்களுள் முதன்மையானவராக இருக்க விரும்புகிறவர் உங்களுக்குப் பணியாளராக இருக்கட்டும். இவ்வாறே மானிடமகனும் தொண்டு ஏற்பதற்கு அல்ல, தொண்டு ஆற்றுவதற்கும் பலருடைய மீட்புக்கு ஈடாகத் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுப்பதற்கும் வந்தார்” என்று கூறினார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கடவுளின் மாட்சியாகிய செல்வத்தை மண்பாண்டங்கள் போன்ற நாங்கள் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். இந்த ஈடு இணையற்ற வல்லமை எங்களிடமிருந்து வரவில்லை, அது கடவுளுக்கே உரியது என்பது இதிலிருந்து விளங்குகிறது. நாங்கள் எல்லாச் சூழ்நிலைகளிலும் இன்னலுற்றாலும் மனம் உடைந்துபோவதில்லை; குழப்பமுற்றாலும் நம்பிக்கை இழப்பதில்லை; துன்புறுத்தப்பட்டாலும் கைவிடப்படுவதில்லை; வீழ்த்தப்பட்டாலும் அழிந்துபோவதில்லை. இயேசுவின் வாழ்வே எங்கள் உடலில் வெளிப்படுமாறு நாங்கள் எங்குச் சென்றாலும் அவருடைய சாவுக்குரிய துன்பங்களை எங்கள் உடலில் சுமந்து செல்கிறோம். இயேசுவின் வாழ்வு சாவுக்குரிய எங்கள் உடலில் வெளிப்படுமாறு உயிரோடு இருக்கும்போதே நாங்கள் அவரை முன்னிட்டு எந்நேரமும் சாவின் வாயிலில் நின்றுகொண்டிருக்கிறோம். சாவின் ஆற்றல் எங்களிலும் வாழ்வின் ஆற்றல் உங்களிலும் வெளிப்படுகிறது.

“நான் கடவுள்மீது நம்பிக்கையோடு இருந்தேன்; ஆகவே பேசினேன்” என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது. அதற்கொப்ப நம்பிக்கை மனப்பான்மை கொண்டுள்ள நாங்களும் நம்புகிறோம்; ஆகவே பேசுகிறோம். ஆண்டவர் இயேசுவை உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்த கடவுளே எங்களையும் அவரோடு உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்து அவர் திருமுன் நிறுத்துவார்; உங்களையும் அவ்வாறே நிறுத்துவார் என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். இவை அனைத்தும் உங்கள் நன்மைக்கே நிகழ்கின்றன. இறையருள் பெறுவோரின் தொகை பெருகப் பெருக அவர்கள் கடவுளுக்குச் செலுத்தும் நன்றியும் பெருகும். இதனால் கடவுள் போற்றிப் புகழப்படுவார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 20: 20-28 

The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low; and he said to her, ‘What is it you want?’ She said to him, ‘Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus answered. ‘Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ ‘Very well,’ he said ‘you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’

  When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that among the pagans the rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us.

A reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 4: 7-15 

We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered; we see no answer to our problems, but never despair; we have been persecuted, but never deserted; knocked down, but never killed; always, wherever we may be, we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus, too, may always be seen in our body. Indeed, while we are still alive, we are consigned to our death every day, for the sake of Jesus, so that in our mortal flesh the life of Jesus, too, may be openly shown. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

  But as we have the same spirit of faith that is mentioned in scripture – I believed, and therefore I spoke – we too believe and therefore we too speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus to life will raise us with Jesus in our turn, and put us by his side and you with us. You see, all this is for your benefit, so that the more grace is multiplied among people, the more thanksgiving there will be, to the glory of God.

அக்காலத்தில்

சீடர்கள் இயேசுவின் அருகே வந்து, “ஏன் அவர்களோடு உவமைகள் வாயிலாகப் பேசுகின்றீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களிடம் மறுமொழியாகக் கூறியது: “விண்ணரசின் மறைபொருளை அறிய உங்களுக்குக் கொடுத்து வைத்திருக்கிறது; அவர்களுக்கோ கொடுத்து வைக்கவில்லை. உள்ளவருக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; அவர் நிறைவாகப் பெறுவார். மாறாக, இல்லாதவரிடமிருந்து உள்ளதும் எடுக்கப்படும். அவர்கள் கண்டும் காண்பதில்லை; கேட்டும் கேட்பதில்லை; புரிந்து கொள்வதுமில்லை. இதனால்தான் நான் அவர்களோடு உவமைகள் வாயிலாகப் பேசுகிறேன். இவ்வாறு எசாயாவின் பின்வரும் இறைவாக்கு அவர்களிடம் நிறைவேறுகிறது:

அந்நாள்களில்

எகிப்து நாட்டினின்று புறப்பட்டு வந்த மூன்றாம் மாதம் முதல் நாளில் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் சீனாய் பாலை நிலத்தைச் சென்றடைந்தனர். இரபிதீமிலிருந்து பயணம் மேற்கொண்ட அவர்கள் சீனாய் பாலை நிலத்தை வந்தடைந்து, பாலை நிலத்தில் பாளையம் இறங்கினர். அங்கே மலைக்கு முன்பாக இஸ்ரயேலர் பாளையம் இறங்கினர்.

ஆண்டவர் மோசேயை நோக்கி, “இதோ! நான் உன்னோடு பேசுவதை மக்கள் கேட்கும்படியும் என்றென்றும் உன்னை நம்பும்படியும் நான் கார்மேகத்தில் உன்னிடம் வருவேன்” என்றார்.

மோசேயும் மக்களின் வார்த்தைகளை ஆண்டவருக்கு அறிவித்தார். ஆண்டவர் மோசேயை நோக்கி, “நீ மக்களிடம் போய் அவர்களை இன்றும் நாளையும் தூய்மைப்படுத்து. அவர்கள் தம் துணிகளைத் துவைத்துக் கொள்ளட்டும். இவ்வாறு மூன்றாம் நாளுக்காகத் தயாராகட்டும். ஏனெனில், மூன்றாம் நாள் மக்கள் அனைவர்க்கும் முன்பாக ஆண்டவர் சீனாய் மலைமேல் இறங்கி வருவார்” என்றார்.

மூன்றாம் நாள் பொழுது புலரும் நேரத்தில் பேரிடி முழங்கியது. மின்னல் வெட்டியது. மலைமேல் மாபெரும் கார்மேகம் வந்து கவிழ்ந்தது. எக்காளப் பேரொலி எழுந்தது. இதனால் பாளையத்திலிருந்த அனைவரும் நடுநடுங்கினர். கடவுளைச் சந்திப்பதற்காக மோசே மக்களைப் பாளையத்திலிருந்து வெளிவரச் செய்தார். அவர்களும் மலையடிவாரத்தில் வந்து நின்றார்கள். சீனாய் மலை முழுவதும் புகைந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. ஏனெனில் ஆண்டவர் அதன்மீது நெருப்பில் இறங்கி வந்தார். அதன் புகை தீச்சூளையிலிருந்து எழும் புகைபோல் தோன்றியது. மலை முழுவதும் மிகவும் அதிர்ந்தது. எக்காள முழக்கம் எழும்பி, வர வர மிகுதியாயிற்று.

மோசே பேசியபோது கடவுளும் இடிமுழக்கத்தில் விடையளித்தார். ஆண்டவர் சீனாய் மலைமேல் மலையுச்சியில் இறங்கி வந்தார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர் மோசேயை மலையுச்சிக்கு அழைக்க, மோசே மேலே ஏறிச் சென்றார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 13: 10-17

The disciples went up to Jesus and asked, ‘Why do you talk to them in parables?’ ‘Because’ he replied, ‘the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them. For anyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled:

You will listen and listen again, but not understand,

see and see again, but not perceive.

For the heart of this nation has grown coarse,

their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes,

for fear they should see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their heart,

and be converted

and be healed by me.

‘But happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.’

A reading from the book of Exodus 19:1-2,9-11,16-20 

Three months after they came out of the land of Egypt, on that day the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sinai. From Rephidim they set out again; and when they reached the wilderness of Sinai, there in the wilderness they pitched their camp; there facing the mountain Israel pitched camp.

  The Lord said to Moses, ‘I am coming to you in a dense cloud so that the people may hear when I speak to you and may trust you always.’ And Moses took the people’s reply back to the Lord.

  The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and tell them to prepare themselves today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothing and hold themselves in readiness for the third day, because on the third day the Lord will descend on the mountain of Sinai in the sight of all the people.’

  Now at daybreak on the third day there were peals of thunder on the mountain and lightning flashes, a dense cloud, and a loud trumpet blast, and inside the camp all the people trembled. Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the bottom of the mountain. The mountain of Sinai was entirely wrapped in smoke, because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. Like smoke from a furnace the smoke went up, and the whole mountain shook violently. Louder and louder grew the sound of the trumpet. Moses spoke, and God answered him with peals of thunder. The Lord came down on the mountain of Sinai, on the mountain top, and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain; and Moses went up.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு வீட்டிற்கு வெளியே சென்று கடலோரத்தில் அமர்ந்தார். மக்கள் பெருந் திரளாய் அவரிடம் ஒன்றுகூடி வந்தனர். ஆகவே அவர் படகில் ஏறி அமர்ந்தார். திரண்டிருந்த மக்கள் அனைவரும் கடற் கரையில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தனர். அவர் உவமைகள் வாயிலாகப் பலவற்றைக் குறித்து அவர்களோடு பேசினார்: “விதைப்பவர் ஒருவர் விதைக்கச் சென்றார். அவர் விதைக்கும்பொழுது சில விதைகள் வழியோரம் விழுந்தன. பறவைகள் வந்து அவற்றை விழுங்கி விட்டன. வேறு சில விதைகள் மிகுதியாக மண் இல்லாப் பாறைப் பகுதிகளில் விழுந்தன. அங்கே மண் ஆழமாக இல்லாததால் அவை விரைவில் முளைத்தன; ஆனால் கதிரவன் மேலே எழ, அவை காய்ந்து, வேர் இல்லாமையால் கருகிப்போயின. மற்றும் சில விதைகள் முட்செடிகளின் இடையே விழுந்தன. முட்செடிகள் வளர்ந்து அவற்றை நெருக்கிவிட்டன. ஆனால் இன்னும் சில விதைகள் நல்ல நிலத்தில் விழுந்தன. அவற்றுள் சில நூறு மடங்காகவும் சில அறுபது மடங்காகவும் சில முப்பது மடங்காகவும் விளைச்சலைக் கொடுத்தன. கேட்கச் செவியுள்ளோர் கேட்கட்டும்” என்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் கூட்டமைப்பினர் அனைவரும் ஏலிமிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டு ஏலிம், சீனாய் இவற்றிற்கு இடையேயுள்ள சீன் பாலைநிலத்தை வந்தடைந்தனர். இவர்கள் எகிப்து நாட்டினின்று வெளியேறி வந்த இரண்டாம் மாதம் பதினைந்தாம் நாள் அது.

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பினர் அனைவரும் அந்தப் பாலைநிலத்தில் மோசேக்கும் ஆரோனுக்கும் எதிராக முறுமுறுத்தனர். இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “இறைச்சிப் பாத்திரத்தின் அருகில் அமர்ந்து, அப்பம் உண்டு நிறைவடைந்து, எகிப்து நாட்டிலேயே ஆண்டவர் கையால் நாங்கள் இறந்திருந்தால் எத்துணை நலமாய் இருந்திருக்கும்! ஆனால் இந்தச் சபையினர் அனைவரும் பசியால் மாண்டு போகவோ இப்பாலைநிலத்திற்குள் நீங்கள் எங்களைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறீர்கள்” என்றனர்.

அப்போது ஆண்டவர் மோசேயை நோக்கி, “இதோ பார்! நான் உங்களுக்காக வானத்திலிருந்து அப்பத்தைப் பொழியப் போகிறேன். மக்கள் வெளியே போய்த் தேவையானதை அன்றன்று சேகரித்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். என் கட்டளைப்படி நடப்பார்களா இல்லையா என்பதை நான் இவ்வாறு சோதித்தறியப் போகிறேன். ஆனால் ஆறாம் நாளில், நாள்தோறும் அவர்கள் சேகரித்து வந்ததைவிட இருமடங்கு சேகரித்துத் தயாரித்து வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

மோசே ஆரோனிடம், “நீர் இஸ்ரயேல், மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு முழுவதையும் நோக்கி: ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் அணுகிச் செல்லுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் அவர் உங்கள் முறுமுறுப்புகளைக் கேட்டுள்ளார் என்று சொல்லும்” என்றார். அவ்வாறே ஆரோனும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு முழுவதையும் நோக்கிப் பேசிக் கொண்டிருக்கையில், அவர்கள் பாலை நிலப்பக்கமாய்த் திரும்பினார்கள். அப்போது ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி மேகத்தில் தோன்றியது.

ஆண்டவர் மோசேயை நோக்கி, “இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் முறையீடுகளை நான் கேட்டுள்ளேன். நீ அவர்களிடம், ‘மாலையில் நீங்கள் இறைச்சி உண்ணலாம். காலையில் அப்பம் உண்டு நிறைவடையலாம். நானே உங்கள் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் என்பதை இதனால் நீங்கள் உணர்ந்து கொள்வீர்கள்’ என்று சொல்” என்றார்.

மாலையில் காடைகள் பறந்து வந்து கூடாரங்களை மூடிக்கொண்டன. காலையில் பனிப் படலம் கூடாரத்தைச் சுற்றிப் படிந்திருந்தது. பனிப் படலம் மறைந்தபோது பாலை நிலப்பரப்பின்மேல் மென்மையான, தட்டையான, மெல்லிய உறைபனி போன்ற சிறிய பொருள் காணப்பட்டது. இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அதைப் பார்த்துவிட்டு, ஒருவரை ஒருவர் நோக்கி ‘மன்னா’ என்றனர். ஏனெனில், அது என்ன என்று அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை.

அப்போது மோசே அவர்களை நோக்கி, “ஆண்டவர் உங்களுக்கு உணவாகத் தந்த அப்பம் இதுவே” என்றார்.
