I am the resurrection and the life

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 11:1-45 

There was a man named Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany with the two sisters, Mary and Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, ‘Lord, the man you love is ill.’ On receiving the message, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will end not in death but in God’s glory, and through it the Son of God will be glorified.’

  Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, yet when he heard that Lazarus was ill he stayed where he was for two more days before saying to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judaea.’ The disciples said, ‘Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews wanted to stone you; are you going back again?’ Jesus replied:

‘Are there not twelve hours in the day?

A man can walk in the daytime without stumbling

because he has the light of this world to see by;

but if he walks at night he stumbles,

because there is no light to guide him.’

He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is resting, I am going to wake him.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is able to rest he is sure to get better.’ The phrase Jesus used referred to the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant ‘sleep’, so Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.’ Then Thomas – known as the Twin – said to the other disciples, ‘Let us go too, and die with him.’

  On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said:

‘I am the resurrection and the life.

If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live,

and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

Do you believe this?’

‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

  When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, ‘The Master is here and wants to see you.’ Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were in the house sympathising with Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who followed her, Jesus said in great distress, with a sigh that came straight from the heart, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept; and the Jews said, ‘See how much he loved him!’ But there were some who remarked, ‘He opened the eyes of the blind man, could he not have prevented this man’s death?’ Still sighing, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening. Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away.’ Martha said to him, ‘Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day.’ Jesus replied, ‘Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said:

‘Father, I thank you for hearing my prayer.

I knew indeed that you always hear me,

but I speak for the sake of all these who stand round me,

so that they may believe it was you who sent me.’

When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, here! Come out!’ The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with bands of stuff and a cloth round his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, let him go free.’

  Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what he did believed in him.

A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 8:8-11 

The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you

People who are interested only in unspiritual things can never be pleasing to God. Your interests, however, are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him. Though your body may be dead it is because of sin, but if Christ is in you then your spirit is life itself because you have been justified; and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.

யூதர்களின் திருவிழா கூட்டத்தில் சிலர் இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு, “வரவேண்டிய இறைவாக்கினர் உண்மையில் இவரே” என்றனர். வேறு சிலர், “மெசியா இவரே” என்றனர். மற்றும் சிலர், “கலிலேயாவிலிருந்தா மெசியா வருவார்? தாவீதின் மரபிலிருந்தும் அவர் குடியிருந்த பெத்லகேம் ஊரிலிருந்தும் மெசியா வருவார் என்றல்லவா மறைநூல் கூறுகிறது?” என்றனர். இப்படி அவரைக் குறித்து மக்களிடையே பிளவு ஏற்பட்டது. சிலர் அவரைப் பிடிக்க விரும்பினர். ஆனால் யாரும் அவரைத் தொடவில்லை.

தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயர்களும் அனுப்பியிருந்த காவலர்கள் அவர்களிடம் திரும்பி வந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் காவலர்களிடம், “ஏன் அவனைப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு வரவில்லை?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். காவலர் மறுமொழியாக, “அவரைப்போல எவரும் என்றுமே பேசியதில்லை” என்றனர். பரிசேயர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நீங்களும் ஏமாந்து போனீர்களோ? தலைவர்களிலாவது பரிசேயர்களிலாவது அவனை நம்புவோர் யாராவது உண்டா? இம்மக்கள் கூட்டத்துக்குத் திருச்சட்டம் தெரியாது. இவர்கள் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்” என்றனர். அங்கிருந்த பரிசேயருள் ஒருவர் நிக்கதேம். அவரே முன்பு ஒரு நாள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தவர். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “ஒருவரது வாக்குமூலத்தைக் கேளாது, அவர் என்ன செய்தாரென்று அறியாது ஒருவருக்குத் தீர்ப்பளிப்பது நமது சட்டப்படி முறையாகுமா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் மறுமொழியாக, “நீரும் கலிலேயரா என்ன? மறைநூலைத் துருவி ஆய்ந்து பாரும். அப்போது கலிலேயாவிலிருந்து இறைவாக்கினர் யாரும் தோன்றுவதில்லை என்பதை அறிந்துகொள்வீர்” என்றார்கள். அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவர் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றார்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 7: 40-52

At that time: When they heard the words of Jesus, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.” They went each to his own house.

The Lord made it known to me and I knew; then you showed me their deeds. But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.” But, O Lord of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 7: 1-2,10,25-30 

At that time: Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. A Reading from the book of Wisdom 2:1,12-22

Ungodly men reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves, “Let us lie in wait for the righteous man, because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions; he reproaches us for sins against the law and accuses us of sins against our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and calls himself a child of the Lord. He became to us a reproof of our thoughts; the very sight of him is a burden to us, because his manner of life is unlike that of others and his ways are strange. We are considered by him as something base, and he avoids our ways as unclean; he calls the last end of the righteous happy and boasts that God is his father. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen at the end of his life; for if the righteous man is God’s son, he will help him and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. Let us test him with insult and torture, that we may find out how gentle he is and make trial of his forbearance. Let us condemn him to a shameful death for, according to what he says, he will be protected.” Thus they reasoned, but they were led astray, for their wickedness blinded them, and they did not know the secret purposes of God or hope for the wages of holiness or discern the prize for blameless souls.

இயேசு கலிலேயாவில் நடமாடிவந்தார். யூதர்கள் அவரைக் கொல்ல வழி தேடிக்கொண்டிருந்ததால் அவர் யூதேயாவில் நடமாட விரும்பவில்லை.

யூதர்களின் கூடார விழா அண்மையில் நிகழவிருந்தது. தம் சகோதரர்கள் திருவிழாவிற்குப் போனபின் இயேசுவும் சென்றார். ஆனால் அவர் வெளிப்படையாக அன்றி மறைவாகச் சென்றார்.

எருசலேம் நகரத்தவர் சிலர், “இவரைத்தானே கொல்லத் தேடுகிறார்கள்? இதோ! இங்கே இவர் வெளிப்படையாய்ப் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாரே! யாரும் இவரிடம் எதுவும் சொல்லவில்லையே! ஒருவேளை இவரே மெசியா என்று தலைவர்கள் உண்மையாகவே உணர்ந்து கொண்டார்களோ? ஆனால் மெசியா எங்கிருந்து வருவார் என்பது யாருக்கும் தெரியாமல் அல்லவா இருக்கும்! இவர் எங்கிருந்து வருகிறார் என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியுமே” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர். ஆகவே கோவிலில் கற்பித்துக் கெண்டிருந்தபோது இயேசு உரத்த குரலில், “நான் யார்? நான் எங்கிருந்து வந்தேன் என்பவை உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். ஆயினும் நானாக வரவில்லை. என்னை அனுப்பியவர் உண்மையானவர். அவரை உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. எனக்கு அவரைத் தெரியும். நான் அவரிடமிருந்து வருகிறேன். என்னை அனுப்பியவரும் அவரே” என்றார்.

இதைக் கேட்ட அவர்கள் இயேசுவைப் பிடிக்க முயன்றார்கள். எனினும் அவருடைய நேரம் இன்னும் வராததால் யாரும் அவரைத் தொடவில்லை.

When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 4:13,16-18,22 

Brethren: The promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring— not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”— in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”

ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் தமக்குப் பணித்தவாறே யோசேப்பு நடந்துகொண்டார்.

யாக்கோபின் மகன் மரியாவின் கணவர் யோசேப்பு. மரியாவிடம் பிறந்தவரே கிறிஸ்து என்னும் இயேசு.

இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் பிறப்பையொட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சிகள்: அவருடைய தாய் மரியாவுக்கும் யோசேப்புக்கும் திருமண ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யப் பட்டிருந்தது. அவர்கள் கூடி வாழுமுன் மரியா கருவுற்றிருந்தது தெரிய வந்தது. அவர் தூய ஆவியால் கருவுற்றிருந்தார். அவர் கணவர் யோசேப்பு நேர்மையாளர். அவர் மரியாவை இகழ்ச்சிக்கு உள்ளாக்க விரும்பாமல் மறைவாக விலக்கிவிடத் திட்டமிட்டார்.

யோசேப்பு தூக்கத்திலிருந்து விழித்தெழுந்து ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் தமக்குப் பணித்தவாறே தம் மனைவியை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

உலகமே அவருக்கு உரிமைச் சொத்தாகும் என்னும் வாக்குறுதி ஆபிரகாமுக்கோ அவருடைய வழிமரபினர்களுக்கோ திருச்சட்டத்தைக் கடைப்பிடித்ததால் கிடைக்கவில்லை; நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர் ஆனதால்தான் அவ்வாக்குறுதி கிடைத்தது.

ஆகவே கடவுளின் அருள்செயலால் நம்பிக்கை வாக்குறுதியின் அடிப்படையாயிற்று. இவ்வாறு வாக்குறுதி ஆபிரகாமின் வழிவந்தவர்கள் எல்லாருக்கும் - திருச்சட்டத்திற்கு உட்பட்டோருக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அவரைப் போலக் கடவுள்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டோருக்கும் - உரியது என்பது உறுதியாயிற்று. ஆபிரகாம் நம் அனைவருக்கும் தந்தை. ஏனெனில் “எண்ணற்ற மக்களினங்களுக்கு உம்மை நான் தந்தையாக்குகிறேன்” என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது. ஆம், இறந்தவர்களை வாழ்விப்பவரும் இல்லாததைத் தம் வார்த்தையால் இருக்கச் செய்பவருமாகிய கடவுள்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு அவர் முன்னிலையில் ஆபிரகாம் நம் தந்தையானார். “உன் வழிமரபினர் எண்ணற்றவராய் இருப்பர்” என்றும் அவருக்குச் சொல்லப்பட்டது. இக்கூற்று நிறைவேறும் என்னும் எதிர்நோக்குக்கு இடம் இல்லாதது போல் தோன்றினும், அவர் எதிர்நோக்கினார்; தயங்காமல் நம்பினார். ஆகவே அவர் பல மக்களினங்களுக்குத் தந்தையானார். “அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்.”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு யூதர்களிடம், “என் தந்தை இன்றும் செயலாற்றுகிறார்; நானும் செயலாற்றுகிறேன்” என்றார். இவ்வாறு அவர் ஓய்வுநாள் சட்டத்தை மீறியதோடு நில்லாமல், கடவுளைத் தம் சொந்தத் தந்தை என்று கூறித் தம்மையே கடவுளுக்கு இணையாக்கியதால் யூதர்கள் அவரைக் கொல்ல இன்னும் மிகுந்த முயற்சி செய்தார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்துக் கூறியது: “மகன் தாமாக எதையும் செய்ய இயலாது; தந்தையிடம் தாம் காணும் செயல்களையே செய்ய இயலும். தந்தை செய்பவற்றை மகனும் அவ்வாறே செய்கிறார் என நான் உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். தந்தை மகன் மேல் அன்புகொண்டு தாம் செய்யும் அனைத்தையும் அவருக்குக் காட்டுகிறார்; இவற்றைவிடப் பெரிய செயல்களையும் அவருக்குக் காட்டுவார். நீங்களும் வியப்புறுவீர்கள்.

தந்தை இறந்தோரை எழுப்பி அவர்களை வாழ வைப்பதுபோல மகனும் தாம் விரும்பியவர்களை வாழ வைக்கிறார். தந்தை யாருக்கும் தீர்ப்பு அளிப்பதில்லை. தமக்கு எல்லாரும் மதிப்புக் கொடுப்பதுபோல மகனுக்கும் மதிப்புக் கொடுக்க வேண்டுமெனத் தீர்ப்பு அளிக்கும் அதிகாரம் முழுவதையும் அவர் மகனுக்கு அளித்துள்ளார். மகனை மதியாதவர் அவரை அனுப்பிய தந்தையையும் மதிப்பது இல்லை.

என் வார்த்தையைக் கேட்டு என்னை அனுப்பியவரை நம்புவோர் நிலைவாழ்வைக் கொண்டுள்ளனர். அவர்கள் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு உள்ளாக மாட்டார்கள்; ஏற்கெனவே சாவைக் கடந்து வாழ்வுக்கு வந்துவிட்டார்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். காலம் வருகிறது; ஏன், வந்தேவிட்டது. அப்போது இறைமகனின் குரலை இறந்தோர் கேட்பர்; அதைக் கேட்போர் வாழ்வர் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். தந்தை, தாம் வாழ்வின் ஊற்றாய் இருப்பதுபோல, மகனும் வாழ்வின் ஊற்றாய் இருக்குமாறு செய்துள்ளார். அவர் மானிடமகனாய் இருப்பதால், தீர்ப்பு வழங்கும் அதிகாரத்தையும் தந்தை அவருக்கு அளித்துள்ளார்.

இதுபற்றி நீங்கள் வியப்புற வேண்டாம். காலம் வருகிறது; அப்போது கல்லறைகளில் உள்ளோர் அனைவரும் அவரது குரலைக் கேட்டு வெளியே வருவர். நல்லன செய்தோர் வாழ்வு பெற உயிர்த்தெழுவர்; தீயன செய்தோர் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புப் பெற உயிர்த்தெழுவர். நானாக எதுவும் செய்ய இயலாது. தந்தை சொற்படியே நான் தீர்ப்பிடுகிறேன். நான் அளிக்கும் தீர்ப்பு நீதியானது. ஏனெனில் என் விருப்பத்தை நாடாமல் என்னை அனுப்பியவரின் விருப்பத்தையே நாடுகிறேன்.

பாதையில் அவர்களுக்கு மேய்ச்சல் கிடைக்கும்; வறண்ட குன்றுகள் அனைத்திலும் பசும் புல்வெளிகளைக் காண்பர். அவர்கள் பசியடையார்; தாகமுறார்; வெப்பக் காற்றோ, வெயிலோ, அவர்களை வாட்டுவதில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவர்கள்மேல் கருணைகாட்டுபவர் அவர்களை நடத்திச் செல்வார்; அவர் அவர்களை நீரூற்றுகள் அருகே வழிநடத்துவார். என் மலைகள் அனைத்தையும் வழியாக அமைப்பேன்; என் நெடுஞ்சாலைகள் உயர்த்தப்படும்.

At that time: Jesus answered the Jews, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. யூதர்களின் திருவிழா ஒன்று வந்தது. இயேசுவும் எருசலேமுக்குச் சென்றார். எருசலேமில் ஆட்டு வாயிலுக்கு அருகில் ஐந்து மண்டபங்கள் கொண்ட குளம் ஒன்று உண்டு. எபிரேய மொழியில் பெத்சதா என்பது அதன் பெயர். இம்மண்டபங்களில் உடல்நலமற்றோர், பார்வையற்றோர், கால் ஊனமுற்றோர், முடக்கு வாதமுற்றோர் ஆகியோர் திரளாய்ப்படுத்துக் கிடப்பர்.

முப்பத்தெட்டு ஆண்டுகளாய் உடல்நலமற்றிருந்த ஒருவரும் அங்கு இருந்தார். இயேசு அவரைக் கண்டு, நெடுங்காலமாக அவர் அந்நிலையில் இருந்துள்ளதை அறிந்து, “நலம்பெற விரும்புகிறீரா?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார். “ஐயா, தண்ணீர் கலங்கும்போது என்னைக் குளத்தில் இறக்கிவிட ஆள் இல்லை. நான் போவதற்கு முன் வேறு ஒருவர் இறங்கிவிடுகிறார்” என்று உடல்நலமற்றவர் அவரிடம் கூறினார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “எழுந்து உம்முடைய படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்து செல்லும்” என்றார். உடனே அம்மனிதர் நலமடைந்து தம்முடைய படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்தார்.

அன்று ஓய்வுநாள். யூதர்கள் குணமடைந்தவரிடம், “ஓய்வுநாளாகிய இன்று படுக்கையை எடுத்துச் செல்வது சட்டத்திற்கு எதிரான செயல்” என்றார்கள். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “என்னை நலமாக்கியவரே ‘உம்முடைய படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்து செல்லும்’ என்று என்னிடம் கூறினார்” என்றார். “ ‘படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்து செல்லும்’ என்று உம்மிடம் கூறியவர் யார்?” என்று அவர்கள் கேட்டார்கள். ஆனால் நலமடைந்தவருக்கு அவர் யாரெனத் தெரியவில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவ்விடத்தில் மக்கள் கூட்டமாய் இருந்ததால் இயேசு அங்கிருந்து நழுவிப் போய்விட்டார்.

பின்னர் இயேசு நலமடைந்தவரைக் கோவிலில் கண்டு, “இதோ பாரும், நீர் நலமடைந்துள்ளீர்; இதைவிடக் கேடானது எதுவும் உமக்கு நிகழாதிருக்க இனிப் பாவம் செய்யாதீர்” என்றார். அவர் போய், தம்மை நலமாக்கியவர் இயேசு என்று யூதர்களுக்கு அறிவித்தார். ஓய்வுநாளில் இயேசு இதைச் செய்ததால் யூதர்கள் அவரைத் துன்புறுத்தினார்கள்.

அம்மனிதர் கையில் ஓர் அளவு நூலைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு கிழக்கு நோக்கிச் சென்று, ஆயிர முழம் அளந்தார். பின்னர் கணுக்காலளவு ஆழமுள்ள அத்தண்ணீர் வழியாய் என்னை அழைத்துச் சென்றார். அவர் மேலும் ஆயிர முழம் அளந்து என்னை முழங்காலளவு ஆழமுள்ள தண்ணீரில் அழைத்துச் சென்றார். மேலும் ஆயிர முழம் அளந்து இடுப்பளவு தண்ணீரில் என்னை நடத்திச் சென்றார். அவர் மேலும் ஆயிர முழம் அளந்தார். ஆனால் இப்போது அது ஆறாக ஓடியது. எனவே என்னால் அதைக் கடக்க இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் தண்ணீர் உயர்ந்து நீந்திப் போகுமளவுக்கு ஆழமுடையதாய், யாராலும் நடந்து கடக்க முடியாத ஆறாய் ஓடியது. அவர் என்னிடம், ‘மானிடா! இதைப் பார்த்தாயா?’ என்றார். பின்னர் அவர் என்னை ஆற்றின் கரைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார்.

There was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralysed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me,‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar. Then he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me round on the outside to the outer gate that faces towards the east; and behold, the water was trickling out on the south side. Going on eastwards with a measuring line in his hand, the man measured a thousand cubits, and then led me through the water, and it was ankle-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was knee-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was waist-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the water had risen. It was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be passed through. At that time: Jesus departed [from Samaria] for Galilee. (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honour in his own home town.) So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast. So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 65 : 17-21

Thus says the Lord: “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சமாரியாவிலிருந்து கலிலேயாவுக்குச் சென்றார். தம் சொந்த ஊரில் இறைவாக்கினருக்கு மதிப்பு இராது என்று அவரே கூறியிருந்தார். அவர் கலிலேயா வந்தபோது கலிலேயர் அவரை வரவேற்றனர். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் திருவிழாவுக்குச் சென்றிருந்தபோது எருசலேமில் அவர் செய்தவை அனைத்தையும் கண்டிருந்தனர்.

கலிலேயாவில் உள்ள கானாவுக்கு இயேசு மீண்டும் சென்றார். அங்கேதான் அவர் தண்ணீரைத் திராட்சை இரசம் ஆக்கியிருந்தார். கப்பர்நாகுமில் அரச அலுவலரின் மகன் ஒருவன் நோயுற்றிருந்தான். இயேசு யூதேயாவிலிருந்து கலிலேயாவுக்கு வந்திருப்பதாகக் கேள்விப்பட்ட அரச அலுவலர் அவரிடம் சென்று, சாகும் தறுவாயிலிருந்த தம் மகனை நலமாக்க வருமாறு வேண்டினார். இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “அடையாளங்களையும் அருஞ்செயல்களையும் கண்டாலன்றி நீங்கள் நம்பவே மாட்டீர்கள்” என்றார். அரச அலுவலர் இயேசுவிடம், “ஐயா, என் மகன் இறக்குமுன் வாரும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் புறப் பட்டுப்போம். உம் மகன் பிழைத்துக்கொள்வான்” என்றார். அவரும் இயேசு தம்மிடம் சொன்ன வார்த்தையை நம்பிப் புறப்பட்டுப் போனார்.

அவர் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே அவருடைய பணியாளர்கள் அவருக்கு எதிர்கொண்டுவந்து மகன் பிழைத்துக்கொண்டான் என்று கூறினார்கள். “எத்தனை மணிக்கு நோய் நீங்கியது?” என்று அவர் அவர்களிடம் வினவ, அவர்கள், “நேற்றுப் பிற்பகல் ஒரு மணிக்குக் காய்ச்சல் நீங்கியது” என்றார்கள். ‘உம் மகன் பிழைத்துக்கொள்வான்’ என்று இயேசு அந்நேரத்தில்தான் கூறினார் என்பதை அவன் தந்தை நினைவுகூர்ந்தார். அவரும் அவர் வீட்டார் அனைவரும் இயேசுவை நம்பினர்.

இயேசு யூதேயாவிலிருந்து கலிலேயாவுக்கு வந்தபிறகு செய்த இரண்டாவது அரும் அடையாளம் இதுவே.

ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது:

இதோ! புதிய விண்ணுலகையும் புதிய மண்ணுலகையும் படைக்கிறேன்; முந்தியவை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கப்படுவதில்லை; மனத்தில் எழுவதும் இல்லை. நான் படைப்பனவற்றில் நீங்கள் என்றென்றும் மகிழ்ந்து களிகூருங்கள். இதோ நான் எருசலேமை மகிழ்ச்சிக்குரியதாகவும் அதன் மக்களைப் பூரிப்பவர்களாகவும் படைக்கிறேன். நானும் எருசலேமை முன்னிட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியடைவேன்; என் மக்களைக் குறித்துப் பூரிப்படைவேன்; இனி அங்கே அழுகையும் கூக்குரலும் ஒருபோதும் கேட்கப்படா.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கும்போது பிறவியிலேயே பார்வையற்ற ஒருவரைக் கண்டார். “ரபி, இவர் பார்வையற்றவராய்ப் பிறக்கக் காரணம் இவர் செய்த பாவமா? இவர் பெற்றோர் செய்த பாவமா?” என்று இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் அவரிடம் கேட்டார்கள். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “இவர் செய்த பாவமும் அல்ல; இவர் பெற்றோர் செய்த பாவமும் அல்ல; கடவுளின் செயல் இவர் வழியாக வெளிப்படும்பொருட்டே இப்படிப் பிறந்தார். பகலாய் இருக்கும்வரை என்னை அனுப்பியவரின் செயலை நாம் செய்யவேண்டியிருக்கிறது. இரவு வருகிறது; அப்போது யாரும் செயலாற்ற இயலாது. நான் உலகில் இருக்கும்வரை நானே உலகின் ஒளி” என்றார்.

இவ்வாறு கூறியபின் அவர் தரையில் உமிழ்ந்து, உமிழ்நீரால் சேறு உண்டாக்கி, அச்சேற்றைப் பார்வையற்றவருடைய கண்களில் பூசி, “நீர் சிலோவாம் குளத்துக்குப் போய்க் கண்களைக் கழுவும்” என்றார். சிலோவாம் என்பதற்கு ‘அனுப்பப்பட்டவர்’ என்பது பொருள். அவரும் போய்க் கழுவி, பார்வை பெற்றுத் திரும்பி வந்தார்.

அக்கம் பக்கத்தாரும், அவர் பிச்சையெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததை முன்பு பார்த்திருந்தோரும், “இங்கே அமர்ந்து பிச்சையெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தவர் இவர் அல்லவா?” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர். சிலர், “அவரே” என்றனர்; வேறு சிலர், “அவரல்ல; அவரைப்போல் இவரும் இருக்கிறார்” என்றனர். ஆனால் பார்வை பெற்றவர், “நான்தான் அவன்” என்றார். அவர்கள், “உமக்கு எப்படிப் பார்வை கிடைத்தது?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார்கள். அவர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “இயேசு எனப்படும் மனிதர் சேறு உண்டாக்கி, என் கண்களில் பூசி, ‘சிலோவாம் குளத்துக்குப் போய்க் கண்களைக் கழுவும்’ என்றார். நானும் போய்க் கழுவினேன்; பார்வை கிடைத்தது” என்றார். “அவர் எங்கே?” என்று அவர்கள் கேட்டார்கள். பார்வை பெற்றவர், “எனக்குத் தெரியாது” என்றார்.

முன்பு பார்வையற்றவராய் இருந்த அவரை அவர்கள் பரிசேயரிடம் கூட்டி வந்தார்கள். இயேசு சேறு உண்டாக்கி அவருக்குப் பார்வை அளித்த நாள் ஓர் ஓய்வுநாள். எனவே, “எப்படிப் பார்வை பெற்றாய்?” என்னும் அதே கேள்வியைப் பரிசேயரும் கேட்டனர். அதற்கு அவர், “இயேசு என் கண்களில் சேறு பூசினார்; பின் நான் கண்களைக் கழுவினேன்; இப்போது என்னால் பார்க்க முடிகிறது” என்றார். பரிசேயருள் சிலர். “ஓய்வுநாள் சட்டத்தைக் கடைப்பிடிக்காத இந்த ஆள் கடவுளிடமிருந்து வந்திருக்க முடியாது” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர். ஆனால் வேறு சிலர், “பாவியான ஒரு மனிதரால் இத்தகைய அரும் அடையாளங்களைச் செய்ய இயலுமா?” எனக் கேட்டனர். இவ்வாறு அவர்களிடையே பிளவு ஏற்பட்டது. அவர்கள் பார்வையற்றிருந்தவரிடம், “உனக்குப் பார்வை அளித்த அந்த ஆளைக் குறித்து நீ என்ன சொல்கிறாய்?” என்று மீண்டும் கேட்டனர். “அவர் ஓர் இறைவாக்கினர்” என்றார் பார்வை பெற்றவர்.

அவர் பார்வையற்றிருந்து இப்போது பார்வை பெற்றுள்ளார் என்பதை அவருடைய பெற்றோரைக் கூப்பிட்டுக் கேட்கும்வரை யூதர்கள் நம்பவில்லை. “பிறவியிலேயே பார்வையற்றிருந்தான் என நீங்கள் கூறும் உங்கள் மகன் இவன்தானா? இப்போது இவனுக்கு எப்படிக் கண் தெரிகிறது?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவருடைய பெற்றோர் மறுமொழியாக, “இவன் எங்களுடைய மகன்தான். இவன் பிறவியிலேயே பார்வையற்றவன்தான். ஆனால் இப்போது எப்படி அவனுக்குக் கண் தெரிகிறது என்பதோ யார் அவனுக்குப் பார்வை அளித்தார் என்பதோ எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. அவனிடமே கேளுங்கள். அவன் வயது வந்தவன்தானே! நடந்ததை அவனே சொல்லட்டும்” என்றனர்.

யூதர்களுக்கு அஞ்சியதால்தான் அவருடைய பெற்றோர் இப்படிக் கூறினர். ஏனெனில் இயேசுவை மெசியாவாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் எவரையும் தொழுகைக் கூடத்திலிருந்து விலக்கிவிட வேண்டும் என்று யூதர்கள் ஏற்கெனவே தங்களிடையே உடன்பாடு செய்திருந்தார்கள். அதனால் அவருடைய பெற்றோர், “அவன் வயது வந்தவன்தானே! அவனிடமே கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுங்கள்” என்றனர்.

பார்வையற்றிருந்தவரை யூதர்கள் இரண்டாம் முறையாகக் கூப்பிட்டு அவரிடம், “உண்மையைச் சொல்லிக் கடவுளை மாட்சிப்படுத்து. இம்மனிதன் ஒரு பாவி என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றனர். பார்வை பெற்றவர் மறுமொழியாக, “அவர் பாவியா இல்லையா என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியாது. ஒன்று மட்டும் எனக்குத் தெரியும்: நான் பார்வையற்றவனாய் இருந்தேன்; இப்போது பார்வை பெற்றுள்ளேன்” என்றார். அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “அவன் உனக்கு என்ன செய்தான்? எப்படிப் பார்வை அளித்தான்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “ஏற்கெனவே நான் உங்களிடம் சொன்னேன். அப்போது நீங்கள் கேட்கவில்லை. இப்போது மீண்டும் ஏன் கேட்க விரும்புகிறீர்கள்? ஒருவேளை நீங்களும் அவருடைய சீடர்கள் ஆக விரும்புகிறீர்களோ?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் அவரைப் பழித்து, “நீ அந்த ஆளுடைய சீடனாக இரு. நாங்கள் மோசேயின் சீடர்கள். மோசேயோடு கடவுள் பேசினார் என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும்; இவன் எங்கிருந்து வந்தான் என்பதே தெரியாது” என்றார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “இது வியப்பாய் இல்லையா? எனக்குப் பார்வை அளித்திருக்கிறார்; அப்படியிருந்தும் அவர் எங்கிருந்து வந்தவர் எனத் தெரியாது என்கிறீர்களே! பாவிகளுக்குக் கடவுள் செவிசாய்ப்பதில்லை; இறைப்பற்று உடையவராய்க் கடவுளின் திருவுளப்படி நடப்பவருக்கே அவர் செவிசாய்க்கிறார் என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியும். பிறவியிலேயே பார்வையற்றிருந்த ஒருவர் பார்வை பெற்றதாக வரலாறே இல்லையே! இவர் கடவுளிடமிருந்து வராதவர் என்றால் இவரால் எதுவுமே செய்திருக்க இயலாது” என்றார். அவர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “பிறப்பிலிருந்தே பாவத்தில் மூழ்கிக் கிடக்கும் நீயா எங்களுக்குக் கற்றுத்தருகிறாய்?” என்று சொல்லி அவரை வெளியே தள்ளினர்.

யூதர்கள் அவரை வெளியே தள்ளிவிட்டதைப்பற்றி இயேசு கேள்விப்பட்டார்; பின் அவரைக் கண்டபோது, “மானிடமகனிடம் நீர் நம்பிக்கை கொள்கிறீரா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “ஐயா, அவர் யார்? சொல்லும். அப்போது நானும் அவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்வேன்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் அவரைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறீர்! உம்மோடு பேசிக்கொண்டிருப்பவரே அவர்” என்றார். அவர், “ஆண்டவரே, நம்பிக்கை கொள்கிறேன்” என்று கூறி அவரை வணங்கினார்.

அப்போது இயேசு, “தீர்ப்பு அளிக்கவே நான் இவ்வுலகிற்கு வந்தேன்; பார்வையற்றோர் பார்வை பெறவும் பார்வையுடையோர் பார்வையற்றோர் ஆகவுமே வந்தேன்” என்றார். அவரோடு இருந்த பரிசேயர் இதைக் கேட்டபோது, “நாங்களுமா பார்வையற்றோர்?” என்று கேட்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் பார்வையற்றோராய் இருந்திருந்தால் உங்களிடம் பாவம் இராது. ஆனால் நீங்கள் ‘எங்களுக்குக் கண் தெரிகிறது’ என்கிறீர்கள். எனவே நீங்கள் பாவிகளாகவே இருக்கிறீர்கள்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

மார்ச் 15 : இரண்டாம் வாசகம் ‘இறந்தவனே, உயிர்பெற்றெழு; கிறிஸ்து உன்மீது ஒளிர்ந்தெழுவார்'. திருத்தூதர் பவுல் எபேசியருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 5: 8-14 சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் எபேசியருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 5: 8-14

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஒரு காலத்தில் இருளாய் இருந்த நீங்கள் இப்போது ஆண்டவரோடு இணைந்து ஒளியாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள். ஆகவே ஒளி பெற்ற மக்களாக வாழுங்கள். ஏனெனில், ஒளியே எல்லா நன்மையையும் நீதியையும் உண்மையையும் விளைவிக்கிறது. ஆண்டவருக்கு உகந்தது எது என்பதை ஆராய்ந்து பாருங்கள். பயனற்ற இருளின் செயல்களைச் செய்கிறவர்களோடு உங்களுக்கு உறவு வேண்டாம். அவை குற்றமென எடுத்துக்காட்டுங்கள். அவர்கள் மறைவில் செய்பவற்றைச் சொல்லக்கூட வெட்கமாக இருக்கிறது. அவர்கள் செய்வதை எல்லாம் குற்றமென ஒளியானது எடுத்துக்காட்டும்போது அவற்றின் உண்மை நிலை வெளியாகிறது. அவ்வாறு தெளிவாக்கப்படுவது எல்லாம் ஒளி மயமாகிறது.

ஆதலால், ‘தூங்குகிறவனே, விழித்தெழு; இறந்தவனே, உயிர்பெற்றெழு; கிறிஸ்து உன்மீது ஒளிர்ந்தெழுவார்’ என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஆண்டவர் சாமுவேலை நோக்கி, ‘‘உன்னிடமுள்ள கொம்பை எண்ணெயால் நிரப்பிக் கொண்டுபோ. பெத்லகேமைச் சார்ந்த ஈசாயிடம் உன்னை அனுப்புகிறேன்; ஏனெனில் அவன் புதல்வருள் ஒருவனை அரசனாகத் தேர்ந்துள்ளேன்” என்றார்.

ஈசாயின் புதல்வர்கள் வந்தபோது, அவர் எலியாவைப் பார்த்தவுடனே, ‘‘ஆண்டவரால் திருப்பொழிவு செய்யப்பட்டவன் இவனாகத்தான் இருக்கும்” என்று எண்ணினார். ஆனால் ஆண்டவர் சாமுவேலிடம், ‘‘அவன் தோற்றத்தையும் உயரத்தையும் பார்க்காதே; ஏனெனில் நான் அவனைப் புறக்கணித்துவிட்டேன். மனிதர் பார்ப்பதுபோல் நான் பார்ப்பதில்லை; மனிதர் முகத்தைப் பார்க்கின்றனர்; ஆண்டவரோ அகத்தைப் பார்க்கின்றார்” என்றார்.

இவ்வாறு ஈசாய் தம் ஏழு புதல்வரைச் சாமுவேல் முன்பாகக் கடந்து போகச் செய்தார். ‘‘இவர்களையும் ஆண்டவர் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளவில்லை” என்றார் சாமுவேல். தொடர்ந்து சாமுவேல் ஈசாயைப் பார்த்து, ‘‘உன் பிள்ளைகள் இத்தனைப் பேர்தானா?” என்று கேட்க, ‘‘இன்னொரு சிறுவன் இருக்கிறான்; அவன் ஆடுகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான்” என்று பதிலளித்தார் ஈசாய். அதற்குச் சாமுவேல் அவரிடம், ‘‘ஆள் அனுப்பி அவனை அழைத்து வா; ஏனெனில் அவன் வரும்வரை நான் உணவருந்த மாட்டேன்” என்றார். ஈசாய் ஆள் அனுப்பி அவனை அழைத்து வந்தார். அவன் சிவந்த மேனியும் ஒளிரும் கண்களும் கொண்டு அழகிய தோற்றமுடன் இருந்தான். ஆண்டவர் சாமுவேலிடம், ‘‘தேர்ந்து கொள்ளப்பட்டவன் இவனே! எழுந்து இவனைத் திருப்பொழிவு செய்!” என்றார்.

உடனே சாமுவேல் எண்ணெய் நிறைந்த கொம்பை எடுத்து அவன் சகோதரர் முன்னிலையில் அவனைத் திருப்பொழிவு செய்தார். அன்றுமுதல் ஆண்டவரின் ஆவி தாவீதின்மேல் நிறைவாக இருந்தது.

At that time: As Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. The neighbours and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, God listens to him. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe”, and he worshipped him. Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see’, your guilt remains.”

A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Ephesians 5:8-14 

Brethren: At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. At that time: Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
