பேதுரு இயேசுவிடம், “பாரும், நாங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்டுவிட்டு உம்மைப் பின்பற்றியவர்களாயிற்றே” என்று சொன்னார்.

அன்புக்குரியவர்களே,

Put your trust in the grace that is coming to you

1 Peter 1: 10-16 

It was this salvation that the prophets were looking and searching so hard for; their prophecies were about the grace which was to come to you. The Spirit of Christ which was in them foretold the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would come after them, and they tried to find out at what time and in what circumstances all this was to be expected. It was revealed to them that the news they brought of all the things which have now been announced to you, by those who preached to you the Good News through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, was for you and not for themselves. Even the angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.

  Free your minds, then, of encumbrances; control them, and put your trust in nothing but the grace that will be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. Do not behave in the way that you liked to before you learnt the truth; make a habit of obedience: be holy in all you do, since it is the Holy One who has called you, and scripture says: Be holy, for I am holy.

இயேசு புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தபோது வழியில் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் ஓடிவந்து முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு, “நல்ல போதகரே, நிலை வாழ்வை உரிமையாக்கிக்கொள்ள நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று அவரைக் கேட்டார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு அவரிடம், “நான் நல்லவன் என ஏன் சொல்கிறீர்? கடவுள் ஒருவரைத் தவிர நல்லவர் எவருமில்லையே. உமக்குக் கட்டளைகள் தெரியும் அல்லவா? ‘கொலை செய்யாதே; விபசாரம் செய்யாதே; களவு செய்யாதே; பொய்ச்சான்று சொல்லாதே; வஞ்சித்துப் பறிக்காதே; உன் தாய் தந்தையை மதித்து நட’ “ என்றார். அவர் இயேசுவிடம், “போதகரே, இவை அனைத்தையும் நான் என் இளமையிலிருந்தே கடைப்பிடித்து வந்துள்ளேன்” என்று கூறினார்.

அப்போது இயேசு அன்பொழுக அவரைக் கூர்ந்து நோக்கி, “உமக்கு இன்னும் ஒன்று குறைபடுகிறது. நீர் போய் உமக்கு உள்ளவற்றை விற்று ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடும். அப்போது விண்ணகத்தில் நீர் செல்வராய் இருப்பீர். பின்பு வந்து என்னைப் பின்பற்றும்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார். இயேசு சொன்னதைக் கேட்டதும் அவர் முகம்வாடி வருத்தத்தோடு சென்றுவிட்டார். ஏனெனில் அவருக்கு ஏராளமான சொத்து இருந்தது.

இயேசு சுற்றிலும் திரும்பிப் பார்த்துத் தம் சீடரிடம், “செல்வர் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவது மிகவும் கடினம்” என்றார். சீடர்கள் அவர் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டுத் திகைப்புக்கு உள்ளானார்கள். மீண்டும் இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “பிள்ளைகளே, செல்வர்கள் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவது மிகவும் கடினம். அவர்கள் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவதைவிட ஊசியின் காதில் ஒட்டகம் நுழைவது எளிது” என்றார்.

சீடர்கள் மிகவும் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தவர்களாய், “பின் யார்தாம் மீட்புப் பெற முடியும்?” என்று தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களைக் கூர்ந்து நோக்கி, “மனிதரால் இது இயலாது. ஆனால் கடவுளுக்கு அப்படியல்ல, கடவுளால் எல்லாம் இயலும்” என்றார்.

இப்போது சிறிது காலம் நீங்கள் பல்வகைச் சோதனைகளால் துயருறவேண்டியிருப்பினும், அந்நாளிலே பேருவகை கொள்வீர்கள். அழியக்கூடிய பொன் நெருப்பினால் புடமிடப்படுகிறது. அதைவிட விலையுயர்ந்த உங்கள் நம்பிக்கையும் மெய்ப்பிக்கப்படவே துயருறுகிறீர்கள். இயேசு கிறிஸ்து வெளிப்படும்போது அந்நம்பிக்கை உங்களுக்குப் புகழும் மாண்பும் பெருமையும் தருவதாய் விளங்கும். நீங்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்ததில்லை; எனினும் அவர்மீது அன்பு செலுத்துகிறீர்கள். இப்பொழுதும் நீங்கள் அவரைக் கண்டதில்லை; எனினும் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு சொல்லொண்ணா, ஒப்பற்ற மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்து பேருவகை கொள்கிறீர்கள். இவ்வாறு உங்கள் நம்பிக்கையின் குறிக்கோளான ஆன்ம மீட்பையும் பெறுகிறீர்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 10: 17-27 

Jesus was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt before him and put this question to him, ‘Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You must not kill; You must not commit adultery; You must not steal; You must not bring false witness; You must not defraud; Honour your father and mother.’ And he said to him, ‘Master, I have kept all these from my earliest days.’ Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him, and he said, ‘There is one thing you lack. Go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ But his face fell at these words and he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.

  Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!’ The disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, ‘My children,’ he said to them ‘how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.’ They were more astonished than ever. ‘In that case’ they said to one another ‘who can be saved?’ Jesus gazed at them. ‘For men’ he said ‘it is impossible, but not for God: because everything is possible for God.’

Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy has given us a new birth as his sons, by raising Jesus Christ from the dead, so that we have a sure hope and the promise of an inheritance that can never be spoilt or soiled and never fade away, because it is being kept for you in the heavens. Through your faith, God’s power will guard you until the salvation which has been prepared is revealed at the end of time. This is a cause of great joy for you, even though you may for a short time have to bear being plagued by all sorts of trials; so that, when Jesus Christ is revealed, your faith will have been tested and proved like gold – only it is more precious than gold, which is corruptible even though it bears testing by fire – and then you will have praise and glory and honour. You did not see him, yet you love him; and still without seeing him, you are already filled with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described, because you believe; and you are sure of the end to which your faith looks forward, that is, the salvation of your souls.

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுக்கு உவமையாகக் கூறியது: “பார்வையற்ற ஒருவர் பார்வையற்ற வேறொருவருக்கு வழிகாட்ட இயலுமா? இருவரும் குழியில் விழுவர் அல்லவா? சீடர் குருவைவிட மேலானவர் அல்ல. ஆனால் தேர்ச்சி பெற்ற எவரும் தம் குருவைப் போல் இருப்பர்.

நீங்கள் உங்கள் கண்ணில் இருக்கும் மரக்கட்டையைப் பார்க்காமல் உங்கள் சகோதரர் அல்லது சகோதரியின் கண்ணில் இருக்கும் துரும்பைக் கூர்ந்து கவனிப்பதேன்? உங்கள் கண்ணில் இருக்கும் மரக்கட்டையையே நீங்கள் பார்க்காமல் இருந்துகொண்டு உங்கள் சகோதரர் அல்லது சகோதரியிடம், ‘உம் கண்ணில் இருக்கும் துரும்பை எடுக்கட்டுமா?’ என்று எப்படிக் கேட்க முடியும்? வெளிவேடக்காரரே, முதலில் உங்கள் கண்ணில் இருக்கும் மரக்கட்டையை எடுத்து எறியுங்கள். அதன்பின் உங்கள் சகோதரர் அல்லது சகோதரியின் கண்ணில் இருக்கும் துரும்பை எடுக்க உங்களுக்குத் தெளிவாய்க் கண் தெரியும்.

கெட்ட கனி தரும் நல்ல மரமுமில்லை; நல்ல கனி தரும் கெட்ட மரமுமில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு மரமும் அதனதன் கனியாலே அறியப்படும். ஏனென்றால் முட்செடிகளில் அத்திப் பழங்களைப் பறிப்பாருமில்லை; முட்புதர்களில் திராட்சைக் குலைகளை அறுத்துச் சேர்ப்பாருமில்லை. நல்லவர் தம் உள்ளமாகிய நல்ல கருவூலத்திலிருந்து நல்லவற்றை எடுத்துக் கொடுப்பர். தீயவரோ தீயதினின்று தீயவற்றை எடுத்துக் கொடுப்பர். உள்ளத்தின் நிறைவையே வாய் பேசும்.”

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய முதல் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 15: 54-58

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

அழிவுக்குரியது அழியாமையையும், சாவுக்குரியது சாகாமையையும் அணிந்து கொள்ளும்போது மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ள வாக்கு நிறைவேறும்: “சாவு முற்றிலும் ஒழிந்தது; வெற்றி கிடைத்தது. சாவே, உன் வெற்றி எங்கே? சாவே, உன் கொடுக்கு எங்கே?” பாவமே சாவின் கொடுக்கு. பாவத்துக்கு வலிமை தருவது திருச்சட்டமே. ஆகவே நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வழியாக நமக்கு இந்த வெற்றியைக் கொடுக்கும் கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி!

எனவே என் அன்பார்ந்த சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, உறுதியோடு இருங்கள்; நிலையாய் நில்லுங்கள். ஆண்டவருக்காக நீங்கள் உழைப்பது வீண் போகாது என்பதை அறிந்து ஆண்டவரின் பணியை இன்னும் அதிகமாக எப்போதும் செய்யுங்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 6:39-45 

Jesus told a parable to his disciples: ‘Can one blind man guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit? The disciple is not superior to his teacher; the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother’s eye and never notice the plank in your own? How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.

  ‘There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. For every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes from brambles. A good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart; a bad man draws what is bad from the store of badness. For a man’s words flow out of what fills his heart.’

So let us thank God for giving us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

A good man's heartfelt prayer has great power

James 5: 13-20 

If any one of you is in trouble, he should pray; if anyone is feeling happy, he should sing a psalm. If one of you is ill, he should send for the elders of the church, and they must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. So confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, and this will cure you; the heartfelt prayer of a good man works very powerfully. Elijah was a human being like ourselves – he prayed hard for it not to rain, and no rain fell for three-and-a-half years; then he prayed again and the sky gave rain and the earth gave crops.

  My brothers, if one of you strays away from the truth, and another brings him back to it, he may be sure that anyone who can bring back a sinner from the wrong way that he has taken will be saving a soul from death and covering up a great number of sins.

இயேசு புறப்பட்டு யூதேயப் பகுதிகளுக்கும் யோர்தான் அக்கரைப் பகுதிக்கும் வந்தார். மீண்டும் மக்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து கூடினர். அவரும் வழக்கம்போல மீண்டும் அவர்களுக்குக் கற்பித்தார். பரிசேயர் அவரை அணுகி, “கணவன் தன் மனைவியை விலக்கிவிடுவது முறையா?” என்று கேட்டு அவரைச் சோதித்தனர். அவர் அவர்களிடம் மறுமொழியாக, “மோசே உங்களுக்கு இட்ட கட்டளை என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள், “மோசே மணவிலக்குச் சான்றிதழ் எழுதி அவரை விலக்கிவிடலாம் என்று அனுமதி அளித்துள்ளார்” என்று கூறினார்கள்.

அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “உங்கள் கடின உள்ளத்தின் பொருட்டே அவர் இக்கட்டளையை எழுதி வைத்தார். படைப்பின் தொடக்கத்திலேயே கடவுள், ‘ஆணும் பெண்ணுமாக அவர்களைப் படைத்தார். இதனால் கணவன் தன் தாய் தந்தையை விட்டுவிட்டுத் தன் மனைவியுடன் ஒன்றித்திருப்பான். இருவரும் ஒரே உடலாய் இருப்பர்.’ இனி அவர்கள் இருவர் அல்ல; ஒரே உடல். எனவே கடவுள் இணைத்ததை மனிதர் பிரிக்காதிருக்கட்டும்” என்றார்.

பின்னர் வீட்டில் இதைப்பற்றி மீண்டும் சீடர் அவரைக் கேட்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “தன் மனைவியை விலக்கிவிட்டு வேறொரு பெண்ணை மணப்பவன் எவனும் அவருக்கு எதிராக விபசாரம் செய்கிறான். தன் கணவரை விலக்கிவிட்டு வேறொருவரை மணக்கும் எவளும் விபசாரம் செய்கிறாள்” என்றார்.

நீங்கள் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாகாதவாறு, ஒருவர் மற்றவருக்கு எதிராக முறையிடாதீர்கள். இதோ நடுவர் வாயிலில் நின்று கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

அன்பர்களே, நீங்கள் துன்பத்தைத் தாங்குவதிலும் பொறுமையைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பதிலும் ஆண்டவரின் பெயரால் பேசிய இறைவாக்கினரை உங்களுக்கு மாதிரிகளாகக் கொள்ளுங்கள். தளரா மனமுடையோர் பேறுபெற்றோர் என்கிறோம். யோபுவின் தளரா மனத்தைக் குறித்துக் கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். இறுதியில் ஆண்டவர் என்ன செய்தார் என்பதும் உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். ஏனெனில், ஆண்டவர் மிகுந்த பரிவுள்ளமும் இரக்கமும் கொண்டவர்.

எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மேலாக, என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, நீங்கள் ஆணையிடவே வேண்டாம். விண்ணுலகின்மீதும் மண்ணுலகின்மீதும் வேறு எதன்மீதும் ஆணையிடாதீர்கள். நீங்கள் ஆம் என்றால் ஆம் எனவும் இல்லை என்றால் இல்லை எனவும் சொல்லுங்கள். அவ்வாறு செய்தால் நீங்கள் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு உள்ளாக மாட்டீர்கள்.

Jesus came to the district of Judaea and the far side of the Jordan. And again crowds gathered round him, and again he taught them, as his custom was. Some Pharisees approached him and asked, ‘Is it against the law for a man to divorce his wife?’ They were testing him. He answered them, ‘What did Moses command you?’ ‘Moses allowed us’ they said ‘to draw up a writ of dismissal and so to divorce.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘It was because you were so unteachable that he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. This is why a man must leave father and mother, and the two become one body. They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has united, man must not divide.’ Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this, and he said to them, ‘The man who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her. Do not make complaints against one another, brothers, so as not to be brought to judgement yourselves; the Judge is already to be seen waiting at the gates. For your example, brothers, in submitting with patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord; remember it is those who had endurance that we say are the blessed ones. You have heard of the patience of Job, and understood the Lord’s purpose, realising that the Lord is kind and compassionate.

Jesus said to his disciples:

  ‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.

  ‘But anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown into the sea with a great millstone round his neck. And if your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than to have two hands and go to hell, into the fire that cannot be put out. And if your foot should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life lame, than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye should cause you to sin, tear it out; it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell where their worm does not die nor their fire go out. This is the lot of those who trust in themselves,

  who have others at their beck and call.

Like sheep they are driven to the grave,

With the morning their outward show vanishes

  and the grave becomes their home.

But God will ransom me from death

  and take my soul to himself.

The Lord hears the cries of those you have cheated

James 5: 1-6 

An answer for the rich. Start crying, weep for the miseries that are coming to you. Your wealth is all rotting, your clothes are all eaten up by moths. All your gold and your silver are corroding away, and the same corrosion will be your own sentence, and eat into your body. It was a burning fire that you stored up as your treasure for the last days. Labourers mowed your fields, and you cheated them – listen to the wages that you kept back, calling out; realise that the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. On earth you have had a life of comfort and luxury; in the time of slaughter you went on eating to your heart’s content. It was you who condemned the innocent and killed them; they offered you no resistance.

James 4: 13-17 

Here is the answer for those of you who talk like this: ‘Today or tomorrow, we are off to this or that town; we are going to spend a year there, trading, and make some money.’

  You never know what will happen tomorrow: you are no more than a mist that is here for a little while and then disappears. The most you should ever say is: ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we shall still be alive to do this or that.’ But how proud and sure of yourselves you are now! Pride of this kind is always wicked. Everyone who knows 

what is the right thing to do and doesn’t do it commits a sin.
