அக்காலத்தில்,

A Reading from the Book of Job 38:1,12-21,40:3-5 

From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer. He said:

Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning

  or sent the dawn to its post,

telling it to grasp the earth by its edges

  and shake the wicked out of it,

when it changes the earth to sealing clay

  and dyes it as a man dyes clothes;

stealing the light from wicked men

  and breaking the arm raised to strike?

Have you journeyed all the way to the sources of the sea,

  or walked where the Abyss is deepest?

Have you been shown the gates of Death

  or met the janitors of Shadowland?

Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth?

  Tell me all about it if you have!

Which is the way to the home of the light,

  and where does darkness live?

You could then show them the way to their proper places,

  or put them on the path to where they live!

If you know all this, you must have been born with them,

  you must be very old by now!

Job replied to the Lord:

My words have been frivolous: what can I reply?

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, ‘There is an Israelite who deserves the name, incapable of deceit.’ ‘How do you know me?’ said Nathanael. ‘Before Philip came to call you,’ said Jesus ‘I saw you under the fig tree.’ Nathanael answered, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.’ Jesus replied, ‘You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.’ And then he added ‘I tell you most solemnly, you will see heaven laid open and, above the Son of Man, the angels of God ascending and descending.’

As I watched:

Thrones were set in place

and one of great age took his seat.

His robe was white as snow,

the hair of his head as pure as wool.

His throne was a blaze of flames,

its wheels were a burning fire.

A stream of fire poured out,

issuing from his presence.

A thousand thousand waited on him,

ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

A court was held

and the books were opened.

I gazed into the visions of the night.

And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven,

one like a son of man.

He came to the one of great age

and was led into his presence.

On him was conferred sovereignty,

glory and kingship,

and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants.

His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty

which shall never pass away,

nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

இயேசு சீடர்களோடு வழி நடந்தபோது ஒருவர் அவரை நோக்கி, “நீர் எங்கே சென்றாலும் நானும் உம்மைப் பின்பற்றுவேன்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரிடம், “நரிகளுக்குப் பதுங்குக் குழிகளும், வானத்துப் பறவைகளுக்குக் கூடுகளும் உண்டு, மானிட மகனுக்கோ தலை சாய்க்கக்கூட இடமில்லை” என்றார்.

As Jesus and his disciples travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’

  Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me’, replied, ‘Let me go and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.’

  Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’

A Reading from the Book of Job 9:1-13,14-16 

Job spoke to his friends:

Indeed, I know it is as you say:

  how can man be in the right against God?

If any were so rash as to challenge him for reasons,

  one in a thousand would be more than they could answer.

His heart is wise, and his strength is great:

  who then can successfully defy him?

He moves the mountains, though they do not know it;

  he throws them down when he is angry.

He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place,

  making all its pillars tremble.

The sun, at his command, forbears to rise,

  and on the stars he sets a seal.

He and no other stretched out the skies,

  and trampled the Sea’s tall waves.

The Bear, Orion too, are of his making,

  the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.

His works are great, beyond all reckoning,

இயேசு விண்ணேற்றம் அடையும் நாள் நெருங்கி வரவே எருசலேமை நோக்கிச் செல்லத் தீர்மானித்து, தமக்கு முன் தூதர்களை அனுப்பினார். அவருக்கு இடம் ஏற்பாடு செய்வதற்காக அவர்கள் சமாரியருடைய ஓர் ஊருக்குப் போய்ச் சேர்ந்தார்கள். அவர் எருசலேம் செல்லும் நோக்கமாய் இருந்ததால் அவர்கள் அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை.

யோபு வாய் திறந்து, தாம் பிறந்த நாளைப் பழிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். யோபு கூறியது: “ஒழிக நான் பிறந்த அந்த நாளே! ஓர் ஆண் மகவு கருவுற்றதெனச் சொல்லிய அந்த இரவே! அந்த நாள் இருளாகட்டும்.

கருப்பையிலேயே நான் இறந்திருக்கலாகாதா? கருவறையினின்று வெளிப்பட்டவுடனே நான் ஒழிந்திருக்கலாகாதா? என்னை ஏந்த முழங்கால்கள் முன்வந்ததேன்? நான் பாலுண்ண முலைகள் இருந்ததேன்?

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 9:51-56 

As the time drew near for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him, but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem. Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, ‘Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?’ But he turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village.

Why did I not perish on the day I was born?

A Reading from the Book of Job 3:1-3,11-17,20-23 

Job broke the silence and cursed the day of his birth. This is what he said:

May the day perish when I was born,

  and the night that told of a boy conceived.

Why did I not die new-born,

  not perish as I left the womb?

Why were there two knees to receive me,

  two breasts for me to suck?

Had there not been, I should now be lying in peace,

  wrapped in a restful slumber,

with the kings and high viziers of earth

  who build themselves vast vaults,

or with princes who have gold and to spare

  and houses crammed with silver.

Or put away like a still-born child that never came to be,

  like unborn babes that never see the light.

Down there, bad men bustle no more,

  there the weary rest.

Why give light to a man of grief?

  Why give life to those bitter of heart,

who long for a death that never comes,

  and hunt for it more than for a buried treasure?

They would be glad to see the grave-mound

  and shout with joy if they reached the tomb.

Why make this gift of light to a man who does not see his way,

தங்களுக்குள் பெரியவர் யார் என்ற விவாதம் சீடர்களிடையே எழுந்தது. இயேசு அவர்களின் எண்ணங்களை அறிந்து ஒரு சிறுபிள்ளையை எடுத்து, தம் அருகே நிறுத்தி, அவர்களிடம், “இச்சிறு பிள்ளையை என் பெயரால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவர் எவரும் என்னையே ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார். என்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவர் என்னை அனுப்பினவரையே ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார். உங்கள் எல்லாரிலும் சிறியவரே பெரியவர் ஆவார்” என்றார்.

யோவான் இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து, “ஆண்டவரே, ஒருவர் உமது பெயரால் பேய் ஓட்டுவதைக் கண்டு, நாங்கள் அவரைத் தடுக்கப்பார்த்தோம்; ஏனெனில் அவர் நம்மைச் சாராதவர்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “தடுக்க வேண்டாம்; ஏனெனில் நமக்கு எதிராக இராதவர் நம் சார்பாக இருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அளித்தார்; ஆண்டவர் எடுத்துக் கொண்டார். ஆண்டவரது பெயர் போற்றப் பெறுக!

யோபு நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 6-22

ஒரு நாள் தெய்வப் புதல்வர் ஆண்டவர் முன்னிலையில் ஒன்றுகூடினர். சாத்தான் அவர்கள் நடுவே வந்து நின்றான். ஆண்டவர் சாத்தானிடம், “எங்கிருந்து வருகிறாய்?” என்று கேட்டார். சாத்தான் ஆண்டவரிடம், “உலகைச் சுற்றி உலவி வருகிறேன்” என்றான்.

ஆண்டவர் சாத்தானிடம், “என் ஊழியன் யோபைப் பார்த்தாயா? அவனைப் போல் மாசற்றவனும், நேர்மையானவனும், கடவுளுக்கு அஞ்சி, தீமையானதை விலக்கி நடப்பவனும் மண்ணுலகில் ஒருவனும் இல்லை” என்றார்.

மறுமொழியாக, சாத்தான் ஆண்டவரிடம், “ஒன்றுமில்லாமலா யோபு கடவுளுக்கு அஞ்சி நடக்கிறான்? அவனையும் அவன் வீட்டாரையும், அவனுக்குரிய அனைத்தையும் நீர் சூழ்ந்து நின்று காக்கவில்லையா? அவன் கைவேலைகளுக்கு ஆசி வழங்கவில்லையா? அவன் மந்தைகளை நாட்டில் பெருகச் செய்யவில்லையா? ஆனால், உமது கையை நீட்டும்; அவனுக்குரியவற்றின்மீது கை வையும். அப்போது அவன் உம் முகத்திற்கு நேராகவே உம்மைப் பழிப்பான்” என்றான்.

ஆண்டவர் சாத்தானிடம், “இதோ! அவனுக்கு உரியவையெல்லாம் உன் கையிலே; அவன்மீது மட்டும் கை வைக்காதே” என்றார். சாத்தானும் ஆண்டவர் முன்னிலையினின்று புறப்பட்டான்.

ஒரு நாள் யோபின் புதல்வரும் புதல்வியரும் தம் மூத்த சகோதரன் வீட்டில் உண்டு, திராட்சை இரசம் குடித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்போது தூதன் ஒருவன் யோபிடம் வந்து, “எருதுகள் உழுது கொண்டிருந்தன; கழுதைகளும் அவற்றிற்கு அருகில் மேய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. அப்போது செபாயர் பாய்ந்து, அவற்றைக் கைப்பற்றினர். ஊழியரை வாள் முனையில் வீழ்த்தினர். நான் ஒருவன் மட்டுமே தப்பி உம்மிடம் சொல்ல வந்தேன்” என்றான்.

இதைச் சொல்லி முடிப்பதற்குள் இன்னொருவன் வந்து, “கடவுளின் நெருப்பு விண்ணிலிருந்து விழுந்து, ஆடுகளையும், வேலையாள்களையும் சுட்டெரித்து விட்டது. நான் ஒருவன் மட்டுமே தப்பி உம்மிடம் சொல்ல வந்தேன்” என்றான்.

இதைச் சொல்லி முடிப்பதற்குள் இன்னொருவன் வந்து, “கல்தேயர் மூன்று கும்பலாக வந்து ஒட்டகங்கள் மேல் பாய்ந்து அவற்றைக் கைப்பற்றிக் கொண்டனர். ஊழியர்களை வாள் முனையில் வீழ்த்தினர். நான் ஒருவன் மட்டுமே தப்பி உம்மிடம் சொல்ல வந்தேன்” என்றான்.

இதைச் சொல்லி முடிப்பதற்குள் இன்னொருவன் வந்து, “உம் புதல்வரும், புதல்வியரும் தம் மூத்த சகோதரன் வீட்டில் உண்டு, திராட்சை இரசம் குடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்போது திடீரெனப் பெருங்காற்று பாலை நிலத்திலிருந்து வீசி, வீட்டின் நான்கு மூலைகளிலும் தாக்கியது. வீடு இளைஞர்கள் மேல் இடிந்து விழ, அவர்களும் மடிந்துவிட்டனர். நான் ஒருவன் மட்டுமே தப்பி உம்மிடம் சொல்ல வந்தேன்” என்றான்.

யோபு எழுந்தார்; தம் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக் கொண்டார்; தம் தலையை மழித்துக் கொண்டார். பின்பு தரையில் விழுந்து வணங்கி, “என் தாயின் கருப்பையினின்று பிறந்த மேனியனாய் யான் வந்தேன்; அங்கே திரும்புகையில் பிறந்த மேனியனாய் யான் செல்வேன்; ஆண்டவர் அளித்தார்; ஆண்டவர் எடுத்துக் கொண்டார். ஆண்டவரது பெயர் போற்றப் பெறுக!” என்றார். இவை அனைத்திலும் யோபு பாவம் செய்யவும் இல்லை; கடவுள் மீது குற்றஞ்சாட்டவும் இல்லை.

An argument started between the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child and set him by his side and then said to them, ‘Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For the least among you all, that is the one who is great.’

  John spoke up. ‘Master,’ he said ‘we saw a man casting out devils in your name, and because he is not with us we tried to stop him.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘You must not stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.’

A Reading from the Bok of Job 1:6-22 

One day the Sons of God came to attend on the Lord, and among them was Satan. So the Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you been?’ ‘Round the earth,’ he answered ‘roaming about.’ So the Lord asked him, ‘Did you notice my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.’ ‘Yes,’ Satan said ‘but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he? Have you not put a wall round him and his house and all his domain? You have blessed all he undertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside. But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: I warrant you, he will curse you to your face.’ ‘Very well,’ the Lord said to Satan ‘all he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.’ So Satan left the presence of the Lord.

  On the day when Job’s sons and daughters were at their meal and drinking wine at their eldest brother’s house, a messenger came to Job. ‘Your oxen’ he said ‘were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at their side, when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off. Your servants they put to the sword: I alone escaped to tell you.’ He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. ‘The fire of God’ he said ‘has fallen from the heavens and burnt up all your sheep, and your shepherds too: I alone escaped to tell you.’ He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. ‘The Chaldaeans,’ he said ‘three bands of them, have raided your camels and made off with them. Your servants they put to the sword: I alone escaped to tell you.’ He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. ‘Your sons and daughters’ he said ‘were at their meal and drinking wine at their eldest brother’s house, when suddenly from the wilderness a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fell in on the young people.   Job rose and tore his gown and shaved his head. Then falling to the ground he worshipped and said:

‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

naked I shall return.

The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back.

In all this misfortune Job committed no sin nor offered any insult to God.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு பரிசேயரிடம் கூறியது: “செல்வர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் விலையுயர்ந்த மெல்லிய செந்நிற ஆடை அணிந்து நாள்தோறும் விருந்துண்டு இன்புற்றிருந்தார். இலாசர் என்னும் பெயர் கொண்ட ஏழை ஒருவரும் இருந்தார். அவர் உடல் முழுவதும் புண்ணாய் இருந்தது. அவர் அச்செல்வருடைய வீட்டு வாயில் அருகே கிடந்தார். அவர் செல்வருடைய மேசையிலிருந்து விழும் துண்டுகளால் தம் பசியாற்ற விரும்பினார். நாய்கள் வந்து அவர் புண்களை நக்கும். அந்த ஏழை இறந்தார். வானதூதர்கள் அவரை ஆபிரகாமின் மடியில் கொண்டு போய்ச் சேர்த்தார்கள். செல்வரும் இறந்தார். அவர் அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டார்.

அவர் பாதாளத்தில் வதைக்கப்பட்டபோது அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துத் தொலையில் ஆபிரகாமையும் அவரது மடியில் இலாசரையும் கண்டார். அவர், ‘தந்தை ஆபிரகாமே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்; இலாசர் தமது விரல் நுனியைத் தண்ணீரில் நனைத்து எனது நாவைக் குளிரச் செய்ய அவரை அனுப்பும். ஏனெனில் இந்தத் தீப்பிழம்பில் நான் மிகுந்த வேதனைப் படுகிறேன்’ என்று உரக்கக் கூறினார்.

அதற்கு ஆபிரகாம், ‘மகனே, நீ உன் வாழ்நாளில் நலன்களையே பெற்றாய்; அதே வேளையில் இலாசர் இன்னல்களையே அடைந்தார். அதை நினைத்துக்கொள். இப்பொழுது அவர் இங்கே ஆறுதல் பெறுகிறார்; நீயோ மிகுந்த வேதனைப்படுகிறாய். அன்றியும் எங்களுக்கும் உங்களுக்கும் இடையே பெரும் பிளவு ஒன்று உள்ளது. ஆகையால் இங்கிருந்து ஒருவர் உங்களிடம் வர விரும்பினாலும் கடந்து வர இயலாது. அங்கிருந்து நீங்கள் எங்களிடம் கடந்து வரவும் இயலாது’ என்றார்.

அவர், ‘அப்படியானால் தந்தையே, அவரை என் தந்தை வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்புமாறு உம்மிடம் வேண்டுகிறேன். எனக்கு ஐந்து சகோதரர்கள் உண்டு. அவர்களும் வேதனை மிகுந்த இந்த இடத்திற்கு வராதவாறு அவர் அவர்களை எச்சரிக்கலாமே’ என்றார். அதற்கு ஆபிரகாம், ‘மோசேயும் இறைவாக்கினர்களும் அவர்களுக்கு உண்டு. அவர்களுக்குச் செவிசாய்க்கட்டும்’ என்றார்.

அவர், ‘அப்படியல்ல, தந்தை ஆபிரகாமே, இறந்த ஒருவர் அவர்களிடம் போனால் அவர்கள் மனம் மாறுவார்கள்’ என்றார். ஆபிரகாம், ‘அவர்கள் மோசேக்கும் இறைவாக்கினருக்கும் செவிசாய்க்காவிட்டால், இறந்த ஒருவர் உயிர்த்தெழுந்து அவர்களிடம் போனாலும் நம்பமாட்டார்கள்” என்றார்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் திமொத்தேயுவுக்கு எழுதிய முதல் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 6: 11-16

கடவுளின் மனிதனாகிய நீ, பொருள் ஆசையிலிருந்து தப்பி ஓடு. நீதி, இறைப் பற்று, நம்பிக்கை, மன உறுதி, பணிவு ஆகியவற்றை நாடித் தேடு. விசுவாச வாழ்வு என்னும் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபடு. நிலை வாழ்வைப் பற்றிக்கொள். அதற்காகவே அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறாய். அதனை முன்னிட்டே பல சாட்சிகள் முன்னிலையில் விசுவாசத்தைச் சிறப்பாக அறிக்கையிட்டாய்.

அனைத்துக்கும் வாழ்வளிக்கும் கடவுளின் முன்னிலையிலும், பொந்தியு பிலாத்துவின் முன் விசுவாசத்தைச் சிறப்பாக அறிக்கையிட்ட இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் முன்னிலையிலும் உனக்குக் கட்டளையிடுகிறேன். நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து தோன்றும் வரையில் குறைச் சொல்லுக்கு இடந்தராமல் இந்தக் கட்டளையை அப்பழுக்கின்றிக் கடைப்பிடித்து வா. உரிய காலத்தில் பேரின்பக் கடவுள் அவரைத் தோன்றச் செய்வார். கடவுள் ஒருவரே வேந்தர், அரசருக்கெல்லாம் அரசர், ஆண்டவருக்கெல்லாம் ஆண்டவர். அவர் ஒருவரே சாவை அறியாதவர்; அணுக முடியாத ஒளியில் வாழ்பவர்; அவரைக் கண்டவர் எவருமிலர்; காணவும் முடியாது. அவருக்கே என்றென்றும் மாண்பும் ஆற்றலும் உரித்தாகுக! ஆமென்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 16 :19-31 

Jesus said to the Pharisees: ‘There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day. And at his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.

  ‘In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his bosom. So he cried out, “Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.” “My son,” Abraham replied “remember that during your life good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. But that is not all: between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to stop anyone, if he wanted to, crossing from our side to yours, and to stop any crossing from your side to ours.”

  ‘The rich man replied, “Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father’s house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too.” “They have Moses and the prophets,” said Abraham “let them listen to them.” “Ah no, father Abraham,” said the rich man “but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent.” Then Abraham said to him, “If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead.”’

Do all that you have been told, until the Appearing of the Lord

A Reading from the First Letter of St.Paul to Timothy 6 :11-16 

As a man dedicated to God, you must aim to be saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith and win for yourself the eternal life to which you were called when you made your profession and spoke up for the truth in front of many witnesses. Now, before God the source of all life and before Christ, who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius Pilate, I put to you the duty of doing all that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who at the due time will be revealed

by God, the blessed and only Ruler of all,

the King of kings and the Lord of lords,

who alone is immortal,

whose home is in inaccessible light,

whom no man has seen and no man is able to see:

to him be honour and everlasting power. Amen.

Woe to those who live in luxury

A Reading from the Book of Amos 6: 1,4-7 

The almighty Lord says this:

Woe to those ensconced so snugly in Zion

and to those who feel so safe on the mountain of Samaria,

those famous men of this first of nations

to whom the House of Israel goes as client.

Lying on ivory beds

and sprawling on their divans,

they dine on lambs from the flock,

and stall-fattened veal;

they bawl to the sound of the harp,

they invent new instruments of music like David,

they drink wine by the bowlful,

and use the finest oil for anointing themselves,

but about the ruin of Joseph they do not care at all.

That is why they will be the first to be exiled;

the sprawlers’ revelry is over.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு செய்த யாவற்றையும் பார்த்து அனைவரும் வியப்படைந்தனர். அவர் தம் சீடர்களிடம், “நான் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டு மனத்தில் வைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். மானிட மகன் மக்களின் கையில் ஒப்புவிக்கப்பட இருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.

அவர்கள் அவர் சொன்னதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. அவர்கள் அதை உணர்ந்துகொள்ளாதவாறு அது அவர்களுக்கு மறைவாயிருந்தது. ஆயினும் அவர் சொன்னதுபற்றி அவரிடம் விளக்கம் கேட்க அஞ்சினார்கள்.

இளையோரே! இளமைப் பருவம் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு இருப்பதற்கே. இளமையின் நாள்களில் உள்ளக் களிப்புடன் இருங்கள். மனம் விரும்புவதைச் செய்யுங்கள்; கண்களின் நாட்டத்தை நிறைவேற்றுங்கள். ஆனால், நீங்கள் செய்கிற ஒவ்வொரு செயலுக்கும் உரிய தீர்ப்பைக் கடவுள் வழங்குவார் என்பதை மறவாதீர்கள். மனக் கவலையை ஒழியுங்கள். உடலுக்கு ஊறு வராதபடி காத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள்; குழந்தைப் பருவமும் இளமையும் மறையக் கூடியவையே. ஆகையால், உன்னைப் படைத்தவரை உன் இளமைப் பருவத்தில் மறவாதே.

“வாழ்க்கை எனக்கு இன்பம் தரவில்லையே” என்று நீ சொல்லக் கூடிய துயர நாள்களும் ஆண்டுகளும் வருமுன் அவரை உள்ளத்திலே நினை. அதாவது, கதிரவன், பகலொளி, நிலா, விண்மீன்கள் ஆகியவை உனக்கு மங்கலாய்த் தெரியுமுன்னும், மழைக்குப்பின் மேகங்கள் இருண்டு வருவதுபோலத் தோன்றுமுன்னும், வீட்டுக் காவலர் நடுக்கங்கொள்ள, வலியோர் தளர்வுறுமுன்னும், அரைப்போர் மிகச் சிலராகித் தம் வேலையை நிறுத்திக்கொள்ள, பலகணி வழியாகப் பார்ப்போர் ஒளி இழந்து போகுமுன்னும், தெருச் சந்தடி கேளாவண்ணம் கதவுகள் அடைத்துக் கொள்ள, சிட்டுக்குருவியின் கீச்சொலியும் உறக்கத்தைக் கலைக்க, இன்னிசைக் கருவி இசைக்கும் மகளிர் அனைவரும் ஓய்ந்து போகுமுன்னும், உன்னைப் படைத்தவரை உள்ளத்தில் நினை.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 9: 43-45 

At a time when everyone was full of admiration for all he did, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘For your part, you must have these words constantly in your mind: “The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the power of men.”’ But they did not understand him when he said this; it was hidden from them so that they should not see the meaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about what he had just said.

Remember your creator in the days of your youth

Ecclesiastes 11: 9-12:8 

Rejoice in your youth, you who are young;

let your heart give you joy in your young days.

Follow the promptings of your heart

and the desires of your eyes.

But this you must know: for all these things God will bring you to judgement.

Cast worry from your heart,

shield your flesh from pain.

Yet youth, the age of dark hair, is vanity. And remember your creator in the days of your youth, before evil days come and the years approach when you say, ‘These give me no pleasure’, before sun and light and moon and stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain;

the day when those who keep the house tremble

and strong men are bowed;

when the women grind no longer at the mill,

because day is darkening at the windows

and the street doors are shut;

when the sound of the mill is faint,

when the voice of the bird is silenced,

and song notes are stilled,

when to go uphill is an ordeal

and a walk is something to dread.

Yet the almond tree is in flower,

the grasshopper is heavy with food

and the caper bush bears its fruit,

while man goes to his everlasting home. And the mourners are already walking to and fro in the street

before the silver cord has snapped,

or the golden lamp been broken,

or the pitcher shattered at the spring,

or the pulley cracked at the well,

or before the dust returns to the earth as it once came from it, and the breath to God who gave it.

  Vanity of vanities, the Preacher says. All is vanity.
