இயேசு கூறியது: “இந்த நிகழ்ச்சியைப் பற்றி நீங்கள் என்ன நினைக்கிறீர்கள்? ஒரு மனிதருக்கு இரு புதல்வர்கள் இருந்தார்கள். அவர் மூத்தவரிடம் போய், ‘மகனே, நீ இன்று திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்திற்குச் சென்று வேலை செய்’ என்றார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, ‘நான் போக விரும்பவில்லை’ என்றார். ஆனால் பிறகு தம் எண்ணத்தை மாற்றிக்கொண்டு போய் வேலை செய்தார். அவர் அடுத்த மகனிடமும் போய் அப்படியே சொன்னார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, ‘நான் போகிறேன் ஐயா!’ என்றார்; ஆனால் போகவில்லை. இவ்விருவருள் எவர் தந்தையின் விருப்பப்படி செயல்பட்டவர்?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் “மூத்தவரே” என்று விடையளித்தனர்.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “வரிதண்டுவோரும் விலைமகளிரும் உங்களுக்கு முன்பாகவே இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவர் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். ஏனெனில் யோவான் நீதிநெறியைக் காட்ட உங்களிடம் வந்தார். நீங்களோ அவரை நம்பவில்லை. மாறாக வரிதண்டுவோரும் விலைமகளிரும் அவரை நம்பினர். அவர்களைப் பார்த்த பின்பும் நீங்கள் உங்கள் எண்ணத்தை மாற்றிக்கொள்ளவும் இல்லை; அவரை நம்பவும் இல்லை” என்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கிறிஸ்துவிடமிருந்து நீங்கள் ஊக்கம் பெற்றுள்ளீர்களா? அன்பினால் ஆறுதலும், தூய ஆவியினால் தோழமையும் பரிவுள்ளமும் இரக்கமும் கொண்டுள்ளீர்களா? அப்படியானால் நீங்கள் ஒரே எண்ணமும் ஒரே அன்பும் ஒரே உள்ளமும் கொண்டவராய்த் திகழ்ந்து, ஒரு மனத்தவராயிருந்து என் மகிழ்ச்சியை நிறைவாக்குங்கள். கட்சி மனப்பான்மைக்கும் வீண் பெருமைக்கும் இடம் தர வேண்டாம். மனத் தாழ்மையோடு மற்றவர்களை உங்களிலும் உயர்ந்தவராகக் கருதுங்கள். நீங்கள் யாவரும் உங்களைச் சார்ந்தவற்றில் அல்ல, பிறரைச் சார்ந்தவற்றிலேயே அக்கறை கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

கிறிஸ்து இயேசு கொண்டிருந்த மனநிலையே உங்களிலும் இருக்கட்டும்! கடவுள் வடிவில் விளங்கிய அவர், கடவுளுக்கு இணையாயிருக்கும் நிலையை வலிந்து பற்றிக்கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டியதொன்றாகக் கருதவில்லை. ஆனால் தம்மையே வெறுமையாக்கி, அடிமையின் வடிவை ஏற்று, மனிதருக்கு ஒப்பானார். மனித உருவில் தோன்றி, சாவை ஏற்கும் அளவுக்கு, அதுவும் சிலுவைச் சாவையே ஏற்கும் அளவுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து, தம்மையே தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டார். எனவே கடவுளும் அவரை மிகவே உயர்த்தி, எப்பெயருக்கும் மேலான பெயரை அவருக்கு அருளினார். ஆகவே இயேசுவின் பெயருக்கு விண்ணவர், மண்ணவர், கீழுலகோர் அனைவரும் மண்டியிடுவர்; தந்தையாம் கடவுளின் மாட்சிக்காக ‘இயேசு கிறிஸ்து ஆண்டவர்’ என எல்லா நாவுமே அறிக்கையிடும்.

‘மகளே, சீயோன்! அகமகிழ்ந்து ஆர்ப்பரி; இதோ நான் வருகிறேன்; வந்து உன் நடுவில் குடிகொள்வேன்’ என்கிறார் ஆண்டவர். அந்நாளில், வேற்றினத்தார் பலர் ஆண்டவரிடம் வந்து சேர்வார்கள்; அவர்கள் அவருடைய மக்களாய் இருப்பார்கள். அவர் உன் நடுவில் தங்கியிருப்பார்.

I asked him, ‘Where are you going?’ He said, ‘To measure Jerusalem, to find out her breadth and her length.’ And then, while the angel who was talking to me stood still, another angel came forward to meet him. He said to him, ‘Run, and tell that young man this, “Jerusalem is to remain unwalled, because of the great number of men and cattle there will be in her. But I – it is the Lord who speaks – I will be a wall of fire for her all round her, and I will be her glory in the midst of her.”’

Sing, rejoice,

for I am coming

அதற்கு இயேசு, “உம்மை அத்தி மரத்தின் கீழ் கண்டேன் என்று உம்மிடம் சொன்னதாலா நம்புகிறீர்? இதை விடப் பெரியவற்றைக் காண்பீர்” என்றார். மேலும் “வானம் திறந்திருப்பதையும் கடவுளின் தூதர்கள் மானிடமகன் மீது ஏறுவதையும் இறங்குவதையும் காண்பீர்கள் என மிக உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார்.

At the evening sacrifice I, Ezra, came out of my stupor and falling on my knees, with my garment and cloak torn, I stretched out my hands to the Lord my God, and said:

  ‘My God, I am ashamed, I blush to lift my face to you, my God. For our crimes have increased, until they are higher than our heads, and our sin has piled up to heaven. From the days of our ancestors until now our guilt has been great; on account of our crimes we, our kings and our priests, were given into the power of the kings of other countries, given to the sword, to captivity, to pillage and to shame, as is the case today. But now, suddenly, the Lord our God by his favour has left us a remnant and granted us a refuge in his holy place; this is how our God has cheered our eyes and given us a little respite in our slavery. அப்போது அவர்களை நோக்கி, “பயணத்திற்குக் கைத்தடி, பை, உணவு, பணம் போன்ற எதையும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு போகவேண்டாம். ஓர் அங்கி போதும். நீங்கள் எந்த வீட்டுக்குள் சென்றாலும் அங்கேயே தங்கியிருங்கள்; அங்கிருந்தே புறப்படுங்கள். உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாதவர்களுடைய நகரை விட்டுப் புறப்படும்போது உங்கள் கால்களில் படிந்துள்ள தூசியை உதறிவிடுங்கள். இதுவே அவர்களுக்கு எதிரான சான்றாகும்” என்றார். அவர்கள் ஊர் ஊராகச் சென்று எங்கும் நற்செய்தியை அறிவித்து நோயாளிகளைக் குணமாக்கினார்கள்.

Darius king of Persia pays for the rebuilding of the Temple of God

A reading from the book of Ezra 6:7-8,12,14-20 

King Darius wrote to the satrap of Transeuphrates and his colleagues: ‘Leave the high commissioner of Judah and the elders of the Jews to work on this Temple of God; they are to rebuild this Temple of God on its ancient site. This, I decree, is how you must assist the elders of the Jews in the reconstruction of this Temple of God: the expenses of these people are to be paid, promptly and without fail, from the royal revenue – that is, from the tribute of Transeuphrates. May the God who causes his name to live there overthrow any king or people who dares to defy this and destroy the Temple of God in Jerusalem! I, Darius, have issued this decree. Let it be obeyed to the letter!’

  The elders of the Jews prospered with their building, inspired by Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished the building in accordance with the order of the God of Israel and the order of Cyrus and of Darius. This Temple was finished on the twenty-third day of the month of Adar; it was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. The Israelites – the priests, the Levites and the remainder of the exiles – joyfully dedicated this Temple of God; for the dedication of this Temple of God they offered one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs and, as a sacrifice for sin for the whole of Israel, twelve he-goats, corresponding to the number of the tribes of Israel. Then they installed the priests according to their orders in the service of the Temple of God in Jerusalem, as is written in the Book of Moses.

  The exiles celebrated the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Levites, as one man, had purified themselves; all were pure, so they sacrificed the passover for all the exiles, for their brothers the priests and for themselves.

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfil the word of the Lord that was spoken through Jeremiah, the Lord roused the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation and to have it publicly displayed throughout his kingdom: ‘Thus speaks Cyrus king of Persia, “The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; he has ordered me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem, in Judah. அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடருக்குக் கூறிய உவமை: “விண்ணரசைப் பின்வரும் நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு ஒப்பிடலாம்: நிலக்கிழார் ஒருவர் தம் வேலையாள்களை வேலைக்கு அமர்த்த விடியற்காலையில் வெளியே சென்றார். அவர் நாளொன்றுக்கு ஒரு தெனாரியம் கூலி என வேலையாள்களுடன் ஒத்துக்கொண்டு அவர்களைத் தம் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்துக்கு அனுப்பினார். ஏறக்குறைய காலை ஒன்பது மணிக்கு அவர் வெளியே சென்றபொழுது சந்தை வெளியில் வேறு சிலர் வேலையின்றி நிற்பதைக் கண்டார். அவர்களிடம், ‘நீங்களும் என் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்துக்குப் போங்கள்; நேர்மையான கூலியை உங்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பேன்’ என்றார். அவர்களும் சென்றார்கள். மீண்டும் ஏறக்குறைய பன்னிரண்டு மணிக்கும் பிற்பகல் மூன்று மணிக்கும் வெளியே சென்று அப்படியே செய்தார்.

ஏறக்குறைய ஐந்து மணிக்கும் வெளியே சென்று வேறு சிலர் நிற்பதைக் கண்டார். அவர்களிடம், ‘நாள் முழுவதும் வேலை செய்யாமல் ஏன் இங்கே நின்றுகொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்?’ என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து, ‘எங்களை எவரும் வேலைக்கு அமர்த்தவில்லை’ என்றார்கள்.

அவர் அவர்களிடம், ‘நீங்களும் என் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்துக்குப் போங்கள்’ என்றார். மாலையானதும் திராட்சைத் தோட்ட உரிமையாளர் தம் மேற்பார்வையாளரிடம், ‘வேலையாள்களை அழைத்துக் கடைசியில் வந்தவர் தொடங்கி முதலில் வந்தவர் வரை அவர்களுக்குரிய கூலி கொடும்’ என்றார். எனவே ஐந்து மணியளவில் வந்தவர்கள் ஒரு தெனாரியம் வீதம் பெற்றுக் கொண்டனர். அப்போது முதலில் வந்தவர்கள் தங்களுக்கு மிகுதியாகக் கிடைக்கும் என்று எண்ணினார்கள். ஆனால் அவர்களும் ஒரு தெனாரியம் வீதம்தான் பெற்றார்கள்.

அவர்கள் அதைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்ட போது அந்நிலக்கிழாருக்கு எதிராக முணுமுணுத்து, ‘கடைசியில் வந்த இவர்கள் ஒரு மணி நேரமே வேலை செய்தார்கள். பகல் முழுவதும் வேலைப் பளுவையும் கடும் வெயிலையும் தாங்கிய எங்களோடு இவர்களையும் இணையாக்கி விட்டீரே’ என்றார்கள். அவரோ அவர்களுள் ஒருவரைப் பார்த்து, ‘தோழரே, நான் உமக்கு அநியாயம் செய்யவில்லை. நீர் என்னிடம் ஒரு தெனாரியம் கூலிக்கு ஒத்துக் கொள்ளவில்லையா? உமக்குரியதைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு போய்விடும். உமக்குக் கொடுத்தபடியே கடைசியில் வந்த இவருக்கும் கொடுப்பது என் விருப்பம். எனக்குரியதை நான் என் விருப்பப்படி கொடுக்கக் கூடாதா? அல்லது நான் நல்லவனாய் இருப்பதால் உமக்குப் பொறாமையா?’ என்றார்.

இவ்வாறு கடைசியானோர் முதன்மையாவர். முதன்மையானோர் கடைசியாவர்” என்று இயேசு கூறினார்.

நான் வாழ்ந்தால் அது கிறிஸ்துவுக்காகவே.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

வாழ்விலும் சாவிலும் முழுத் துணிவுடன் கிறிஸ்துவை என் உடலால் பெருமைப்படுத்துவேன். இதுவே என் பேராவல், இதுவே என் எதிர் நோக்கு. ஏனெனில் நான் வாழ்ந்தால் அது கிறிஸ்துவுக்காகவே; நான் இறந்தால் அது எனக்கு ஆதாயமே. எனினும் நான் தொடர்ந்து வாழ்ந்தால் பயனுள்ள பணி செய்ய முடியும். எனவே நான் எதைத் தேர்ந்து கொள்வதென எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை.

இந்த இரண்டுக்கும் இடையே ஓர் இழுபறி நிலையில் உள்ளேன். உயிர் நீத்துக் கிறிஸ்துவோடு இருக்கவேண்டும் என்னும் ஆவல் ஒரு புறம். - இதுவே மிகச் சிறந்தது. - ஆனால், இன்னும் வாழவேண்டும் என்பது மற்றொரு புறம். - இது உங்கள் பொருட்டு மிகத் தேவையாய் இருக்கின்றது.

ஒன்றை மட்டும் மறந்து விடாதீர்கள்: கிறிஸ்துவின் நற்செய்திக்கு ஏற்றவாறு நடந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்.

Why be envious because I am generous?

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 20:1-16 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day, and sent them to his vineyard. Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place and said to them, “You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage.” So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same. Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing round, and he said to them, “Why have you been standing here idle all day?” “Because no one has hired us” they answered. He said to them, “You go into my vineyard too.” In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first.” So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each. When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner. “The men who came last” they said “have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day’s work in all the heat.” He answered one of them and said, “My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the last comer as much as I pay you. Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why be envious because I am generous?” Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.’

Life to me is Christ; but death would bring me more

Philippians 1:20-24,27

Christ will be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death. Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would bring me something more; but then again, if living in this body means doing work which is having good results – I do not know what I should choose. I am caught in this dilemma: I want to be gone and be with Christ, which would be very much the better, but for me to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need for your sake.

  Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the gospel of Christ.
