Jesus was to die to gather together the scattered children of God

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 11:45-56

At that time: Many of the Jews who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him, but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land. And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. They shall not defile themselves any more with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But I will save them from all the backsliding in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children’s children shall dwell there for ever, and David my servant shall be their prince for ever. I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst for evermore. My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. அக்காலத்தில்

மரியாவிடம் வந்திருந்த யூதர் பலர் இயேசு செய்ததைக் கண்டு அவரை நம்பினர். ஆனால் அவர்களுள் சிலர் பரிசேயரிடம் சென்று இயேசு செய்ததைத் தெரிவித்தனர். தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயரும் தலைமைச் சங்கத்தைக் கூட்டி, “இந்த ஆள் பல அரும் அடையாளங்களைச் செய்துகொண்டிருக்கிறானே, என்ன செய்யலாம்? இவனை இப்படியே விட்டு விட்டால் அனைவரும் இவனிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்வர். அப்போது உரோமையர் வந்து நம் தூய இடத்தையும் நம் இனத்தையும் அழித்துவிடுவார்களே!” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர். கயபா என்பவர் அவர்களுள் ஒருவர். அவர் அவ்வாண்டின் தலைமைக் குருவாய் இருந்தார். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “உங்களுக்கு ஒன்றும் தெரியவில்லை. இனம் முழுவதும் அழிந்து போவதைவிட ஒரு மனிதன் மட்டும் மக்களுக்காக இறப்பது நல்லது என்பதை நீங்கள் உணரவில்லை” என்று சொன்னார்.

இதை அவர் தாமாகச் சொல்லவில்லை. அவர் அவ்வாண்டின் தலைமைக் குருவாய் இருந்ததால், இயேசு தம் இனத்திற்காகவும், தம் இனத்திற்காக மட்டுமன்றி, சிதறி வாழ்ந்த கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளை ஒன்றாய்ச் சேர்க்கும் நோக்குடன் அவர்களுக்காகவும் இறக்கப்போகிறார் என்று இறைவாக்காகச் சொன்னார். ஆகவே, அன்றிலிருந்தே அவர்கள் இயேசுவைக் கொன்றுவிடத் திட்டம் தீட்டினார்கள்.

அது முதல் இயேசு யூதரிடையே வெளிப்படையாக நடமாடவில்லை. அவர் அவ்விடத்தினின்று அகன்று பாலை நிலத்திற்கு அருகிலுள்ள பகுதிக்குப் போனார்; அங்கு எப்ராயிம் என்னும் ஊரில் தம் சீடருடன் தங்கியிருந்தார்.

யூதர்களுடைய பாஸ்கா விழா அண்மையில் நிகழ இருந்தது. விழாவுக்கு முன் தங்கள் தூய்மைச் சடங்குகளை நிறைவேற்றப் பலர் நாட்டுப் புறங்களிலிருந்து எருசலேமுக்குச் சென்றனர். அங்கே அவர்கள் இயேசுவைத் தேடினார்கள். “அவர் திருவிழாவுக்கு வரவேமாட்டாரா? நீங்கள் என்ன நினைக்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று கோவிலில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயர்களும் இயேசுவைப் பிடிக்க எண்ணி அவர் இருக்கும் இடம் யாருக்காவது தெரிந்தால் தங்களிடம் வந்து அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று கட்டளையிட்டிருந்தார்கள்.

இதோ நான் இஸ்ரயேலர் சிதறுண்ட நாடுகளிலிருந்து அவர்களை அழைத்து, எம்மருங்கினின்றும் கூட்டிச் சேர்த்து, அவர்களின் சொந்த நாட்டிற்குக் கொணர்வேன், இஸ்ரயேலின் மலைகள் மீது அவர்களை ஒரே நாட்டினர் ஆக்குவேன். அவர்கள் எல்லாருக்கும் ஒரே அரசன் இருப்பான்.

அவர்கள் இனிமேல் ஒருபோதும் இரு நாடுகளாகவோ இரு அரசுகளாகவோ பிரிந்திரார். அவர்கள் இனிமேல் ஒருபோதும் தங்கள் தெய்வச் சிலைகளாலோ இழிந்த அருவருப்பான பொருள்களாலோ தங்கள் வேறெந்த குற்றங்களாலோ தங்களைத் தீட்டுப்படுத்திக்கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் பாவம் செய்த எல்லாக் குடியிருப்புகளிலிருந்தும் அவர்களை நான் மீட்டுத் தூய்மையாக்குவேன். அவர்கள் எனக்கு மக்களாய் இருப்பர்; நான் அவர்களுக்குக் கடவுளாய் இருப்பேன்.

இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “ ‘நீங்கள் தெய்வங்கள் என நான் கூறினேன்’ என்று உங்கள் மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது அல்லவா? கடவுளுடைய வார்த்தையைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டவர்களே தெய்வங்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறார்கள். மறைநூல் வாக்கு என்றும் அழியாது. அப்படியானால் தந்தையால் அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்டு அவரால் உலகுக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்ட நான் என்னை ‘இறைமகன்’ என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டதற்காக ‘இறைவனைப் பழித்துரைக்கிறாய்’ என நீங்கள் எப்படிச் சொல்லலாம்? நான் என் தந்தைக்குரிய செயல்களைச் செய்யவில்லை என்றால் நீங்கள் என்னை நம்பவேண்டாம். ஆனால் நான் அவற்றைச் செய்தால், என்னை நம்பாவிடினும் என் செயல்களையாவது நம்புங்கள்; அதன்மூலம் தந்தை என்னுள்ளும் நான் அவருள்ளும் இருப்பதை அறிந்துணர்வீர்கள்” என்றார். இதைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் அவரை மீண்டும் பிடிக்க முயன்றார்கள். ஆனால் அவர்கள் கையில் அகப்படாமல் அவர் அங்கிருந்து சென்றார். யோர்தானுக்கு அப்பால் யோவான் முதலில் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்துவந்த இடத்திற்கு இயேசு மீண்டும் சென்று அங்குத் தங்கினார். பலர் அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவர்கள், “யோவான் அரும் அடையாளம் எதையும் செய்யவில்லை; ஆனால் அவர் இவரைப்பற்றிச் சொன்னதெல்லாம் உண்மையாயிற்று” எனப் பேசிக்கொண்டனர். அங்கே பலர் அவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர்.

At that time: The Jews picked up stones again to stone Jesus. Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came and Scripture cannot be broken— do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming’, because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. He has delivered the soul of the needy from the hands of evil men

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 20:10-13

I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.” But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble; they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonour will never be forgotten. O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.

யூதர்கள் அவரிடம், “நீ பேய் பிடித்தவன்தான் என்பது இப்போது தெரிந்துவிட்டது. ஆபிரகாம் இறந்தார்; இறைவாக்கினர்களும் இறந்தார்கள். ஆனால் என் வார்த்தையைக் கடைப்பிடிப்போர் என்றுமே சாகமாட்டார் என்கிறாயே! எங்கள் தந்தை ஆபிரகாமைவிட நீ பெரியவனோ? ஆபிரகாம் இறந்தார்; இறைவாக்கினரும் இறந்தனர். நீ யாரென்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாய்?” என்றார்கள்.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நானே என்னைப் பெருமைப்படுத்தினால், அது எனக்குப் பெருமை இல்லை. என்னைப் பெருமைப்படுத்துபவர் என் தந்தையே. அவரையே நீங்கள் உங்கள் தந்தை என்றும் சொல்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் அவரை உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது; எனக்குத் தெரியும். எனக்கு அவரைத் தெரியாது என நான் சொன்னால் உங்களைப் போல நானும் பொய்யனாவேன். அவரை எனக்குத் தெரியும். அவருடைய வார்த்தையையும் நான் கடைப்பிடிக்கிறேன். உங்கள் தந்தை ஆபிரகாம் நான் வரும் காலத்தைக் காண முடியும் என்பதை முன்னிட்டுப் பேருவகை கொண்டார்; அதனைக் கண்டபோது மகிழ்ச்சியும் கொண்டார்” என்றார்.

யூதர்கள் இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “உனக்கு இன்னும் ஐம்பது வயதுகூட ஆகவில்லை; நீ ஆபிரகாமைக் கண்டிருக்கிறாயா?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “ஆபிரகாம் பிறப்பதற்கு முன்பே நான் இருக்கிறேன் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். இதைக் கேட்ட அவர்கள் அவர்மேல் எறியக் கற்களை எடுத்தார்கள். ஆனால் இயேசு மறைவாக நழுவிக் கோவிலிலிருந்து வெளியேறினார்.

Brethren: It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. ஆறாம் மாதத்தில் கபிரியேல் என்னும் வானதூதரைக் கடவுள் கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள நாசரேத்து என்னும் ஊரிலிருந்த ஒரு கன்னியிடம் அனுப்பினார். அவர் தாவீது குடும்பத்தினராகிய யோசேப்பு என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவருக்கு மண ஒப்பந்தமானவர். அவர் பெயர் மரியா.

வானதூதர் மரியாவுக்குத் தோன்றி, “அருள் நிறைந்தவரே வாழ்க! ஆண்டவர் உம்மோடு இருக்கிறார்” என்றார். இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு அவர் கலங்கி, இந்த வாழ்த்து எத்தகையதோ என்று எண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

வானதூதர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “மரியா, அஞ்சவேண்டாம்; கடவுளின் அருளைக் கண்டடைந்துள்ளீர். இதோ, கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெறுவீர்; அவருக்கு இயேசு என்னும் பெயரிடுவீர். அவர் பெரியவராயிருப்பார்; உன்னத கடவுளின் மகன் எனப்படுவார். அவருடைய தந்தை தாவீதின் அரியணையை ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் அவருக்கு அளிப்பார். அவர் யாக்கோபின் குடும்பத்தின்மீது என்றென்றும் ஆட்சி செலுத்துவார். அவருடைய ஆட்சிக்கு முடிவே இராது” என்றார்.

அதற்கு மரியா வானதூதரிடம், “இது எப்படி நிகழும்? நான் கன்னி ஆயிற்றே!” என்றார்.

வானதூதர் அவரிடம், “தூய ஆவி உம்மீது வரும். உன்னத கடவுளின் வல்லமை உம்மேல் நிழலிடும். ஆதலால் உம்மிடம் பிறக்கப்போகும் குழந்தை தூயது. அக்குழந்தை இறைமகன் எனப்படும். உம் உறவினராகிய எலிசபெத்தும் தம் முதிர்ந்த வயதில் ஒரு மகனைக் கருத்தரித்திருக்கிறார். கருவுற இயலாதவர் என்று சொல்லப்பட்ட அவருக்கு இது ஆறாம் மாதம். ஏனெனில், கடவுளால் இயலாதது ஒன்றுமில்லை” என்றார்.

பின்னர் மரியா, “நான் ஆண்டவரின் அடிமை; உம் சொற்படியே எனக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது வானதூதர் அவரை விட்டு அகன்றார்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

என் கடவுளே, உமது திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்ற, இதோ வருகின்றேன்.

எபிரேயருக்கு எழுதப்பட்ட திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 10: 4-10

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

காளைகள், வெள்ளாட்டுக் கிடாய்கள் இவற்றின் இரத்தம் பாவங்களைப் போக்க முடியாது. அதனால்தான் கிறிஸ்து உலகிற்கு வந்தபோது, “பலியையும் காணிக்கையையும் நீர் விரும்பவில்லை, ஆனால் ஓர் உடலை எனக்கு அமைத்துத் தந்தீர். எரிபலிகளும் பாவம் போக்கும் பலிகளும் உமக்கு உகந்தவையல்ல. எனவே நான் கூறியது: என் கடவுளே, உமது திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்ற, ‘இதோ வருகின்றேன்.’ என்னைக் குறித்துத் திருநூல் சுருளில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது” என்கிறார்.

திருச்சட்டப்படி செலுத்தப்பட்ட போதிலும், “நீர் பலிகளையும் காணிக்கைகளையும் எரிபலிகளையும் பாவம்போக்கும் பலிகளையும் விரும்பவில்லை; இவை உமக்கு உகந்தவையல்ல” என்று அவர் முதலில் கூறுகிறார். பின்னர் “உமது திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்ற, இதோ வருகின்றேன்” என்கிறார். பின்னையதை நிலைக்கச் செய்ய முன்னையதை நீக்கி விடுகிறார்.

இந்தத் திருவுளத்தால்தான் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து ஒரே ஒரு முறை தம் உடலைப் பலியாகச் செலுத்தியதன் மூலம் நாம் தூயவராக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம்.

At that time: Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. In those days: From Mount Hor the Hebrews set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go round the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

அவர்கள், “நீர் யார்?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார்கள். அவர், “நான் யார் என்று தொடக்கத்திலிருந்தே சொல்லி வந்துள்ளேன். உங்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசுவதற்கும் தீர்ப்பிடுவதற்கும் பல உண்டு. ஆனால் என்னை அனுப்பியவர் உண்மையானவர். நானும் அவரிடமிருந்து கேட்டவற்றையே உலகுக்கு எடுத்துரைக்கிறேன்” என்றார். தந்தையைப் பற்றியே அவர் பேசினார் என்பதை அவர்கள் உணர்ந்துகொள்ளவில்லை.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் மானிடமகனை உயர்த்தியபின்பு, ‘இருக்கிறவர் நானே'; நானாக எதையும் செய்வதில்லை; மாறாகத் தந்தை கற்றுத்தந்ததையே நான் எடுத்துரைக்கிறேன் என்பதை அறிந்து கொள்வீர்கள். என்னை அனுப்பியவர் என்னோடு இருக்கிறார். அவர் என்னைத் தனியாக விட்டுவிடுவதில்லை. நானும் அவருக்கு உகந்தவற்றையே எப்போதும் செய்கிறேன்” என்றார். அவர் இவற்றைச் சொன்னபோது பலர் அவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர்.

ஏதோம் நாட்டைச் சுற்றிப்போகும்படி ஓர் என்ற மலையிலிருந்து இஸ்ரயேலர் ‘செங்கடல் சாலை’ வழியாகப் பயணப்பட்டனர்; அவ்வழியை முன்னிட்டு மக்கள் பொறுமை இழந்தனர். மக்கள் கடவுளுக்கும் மோசேக்கும் எதிராகப் பேசினர்: “இந்தப் பாலைநிலத்தில் மாளும்படி எங்களை எகிப்திலிருந்து கொண்டுவந்தது ஏன்? இங்கு உணவுமில்லை, தண்ணீருமில்லை, அற்பமான இந்த உணவு எங்களுக்கு வெறுத்துப் போய்விட்டது” என்றனர். உடனே ஆண்டவர் கொள்ளிவாய்ப் பாம்புகளை மக்களிடையே அனுப்பினார்; அவை கடிக்கவே இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களில் பலர் மாண்டனர். அப்போது மக்கள் மோசேயிடம் வந்து, “நாங்கள் பாவம் செய்துள்ளோம்; நாங்கள் ஆண்டவருக்கும் உமக்கும் எதிராகப் பேசியுள்ளோம்; அவர் இந்தப் பாம்புகளை அகற்றிவிடும்படி நீர் ஆண்டவரிடம் வேண்டிக்கொள்ளும்” என்றனர். அவ்வாறே மோசே மக்களுக்காக மன்றாடினார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர் மோசேயிடம், “கொள்ளிவாய்ப் பாம்பு ஒன்றைச் செய்து அதை ஒரு கம்பத்தில் பொருத்து; கடிக்கப்பட்டோரில் இதைப் பார்க்கிற ஒவ்வொருவனும் பிழைப்பான்” என்றார். அவ்வாறே மோசே ஒரு வெண்கலப் பாம்பைச் செய்து அதை ஒரு கம்பத்தில் பொருத்தினார்; பாம்பு கடித்த எந்த ஒரு மனிதனும் இந்த வெண்கலப் பாம்பைப் பார்த்து உயிர் பிழைப்பான்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு ஒலிவ மலைக்குச் சென்றார். பொழுது விடிந்ததும் அவர் மீண்டும் கோவிலுக்கு வந்தார். அப்போது மக்கள் அனைவரும் அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவரும் அங்கு அமர்ந்து அவர்களுக்குக் கற்பித்தார். மறைநூல் அறிஞரும் பரிசேயரும் விபசாரத்தில் பிடிபட்ட ஒரு பெண்ணைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டுவந்து நடுவில் நிறுத்தி, ‘‘போதகரே, இப்பெண் விபசாரத்தில் கையும் மெய்யுமாகப் பிடிபட்டவள். இப்படிப்பட்டவர்களைக் கல்லால் எறிந்து கொல்ல வேண்டும் என்பது மோசே நமக்குக் கொடுத்த திருச்சட்டத்திலுள்ள கட்டளை. நீர் என்ன சொல்கிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டனர். அவர்மேல் குற்றம் சுமத்த ஏதாவது வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக அவர்கள் இவ்வாறு கேட்டுச் சோதித்தார்கள்.

இயேசு குனிந்து விரலால் தரையில் எழுதிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆனால் அவர்கள் அவரை விடாமல் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்ததால், அவர் நிமிர்ந்து பார்த்து, ‘‘உங்களுள் பாவம் இல்லாதவர் முதலில் இப்பெண்மேல் கல் எறியட்டும்” என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார். மீண்டும் குனிந்து தரையில் எழுதிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அவர் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டதும் முதியோர் தொடங்கி ஒருவர் பின் ஒருவராக அவர்கள் யாவரும் அங்கிருந்து சென்றுவிட்டார்கள். இறுதியாக இயேசு மட்டுமே அங்கு இருந்தார். அப்பெண்ணும் அங்கேயே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்.

இயேசு நிமிர்ந்து பார்த்து, ‘‘அம்மா, அவர்கள் எங்கே? நீர் குற்றவாளி என்று எவரும் தீர்ப்பிடவில்லையா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர், ‘‘இல்லை, ஐயா” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், ‘‘நானும் தீர்ப்பு அளிக்கவில்லை. நீர் போகலாம். இனிப் பாவம் செய்யாதீர்” என்றார்.

பாபிலோனில் யோவாக்கிம் என்னும் ஒருவர் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். அவர் சூசன்னாவை மணந்தார். சூசன்னா கில்கியாவின் மகள்; அவர் பேரழகி; ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடந்தவர். அவர் பெற்றோர் நேர்மையாளராய் இருந்ததால், தங்கள் மகளை மோசே சட்டத்தின் வழியில் பயிற்றுவித்தனர். யோவாக்கிம் பெரும் செல்வர். அவரது வீட்டுக்கு அருகிலேயே அவருக்கு ஒரு தோட்டம் இருந்தது. யூதர்கள் அவரிடம் வருவது வழக்கம்; ஏனெனில் மற்ற எல்லாரையும்விட அவர் மிகவும் மதிக்கப் பெற்றார்.

அக்காலத்தில் மக்களுள் முதியோர் இருவர் நடுவராய் நியமிக்கப் பெற்றனர். இவர்களைப் பற்றியே ஆண்டவர், ‘‘நடுவர்களாய் இருந்து மக்களை வழிநடத்தவேண்டிய மூப்பர்கள் வாயிலாகப் பாபிலோனினின்று ஒழுக்கக்கேடு வந்துற்றது” என்று சொல்லியிருந்தார். இவர்கள் யோவாக்கிம் வீட்டில் நெடுநேரம் இருப்பது வழக்கம். வழக்குடையோர் அனைவரும் இவர்களை அணுகுவதுண்டு. நண்பகல் வேளையில் மக்கள் சென்றபின், சூசன்னா தம் கணவரின் தோட்டத்திற்குள் சென்று உலாவு வார். அவர் நாள்தோறும் அங்குச் சென்று உலாவுவதைப் பார்த்து வந்த அந்த முதியோர் இருவரும் அவரைக் காமுறத் தொடங்கினர். இதனால் அவர்கள் தங்கள் மனத்தைத் தகாத வழியில் செலவிட்டார்கள். விண்ணக இறைவனை நினையாதவாறும் நீதித் தீர்ப்புகளைக் கருதாதவாறும் அவர்கள் நெறி மாறிச் சென்றார்கள்.

அதற்கு ஏற்றதொரு நாளை அவர்கள் எதிர்நோக்கியிருந்தார்கள். ஒரு நாள் சூசன்னா வழக்கம்போல் இரண்டு பணிப்பெண்களோடு மட்டும் தோட்டத்தினுள் நுழைந்து, குளிக்க விரும்பினார்; ஏனெனில், அன்று வெயில் கடுமையாக இருந்தது. அந்த முதியோர் இருவரைத் தவிர வேறு யாரும் அங்கு இல்லை. அவர்களோ ஒளிந்திருந்து சூசன்னாவைக் கவனித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். சூசன்னா பணிப் பெண்களிடம், ‘‘நான் குளிக்க எண்ணெயும் நறுமணப் பொருள்களும் கொண்டு வாருங்கள்; பிறகு தோட்டத்தின் வாயில்களை மூடிவிடுங்கள்” என்று சொன்னார். பணிப்பெண்கள் வெளியேறியதும் முதியோர் இருவரும் எழுந்து சூசன்னாவிடம் ஓடோடிச் சென்றனர். அவரை நோக்கி, ‘‘இதோ! தோட்டத்தின் வாயில்கள் மூடப்பட்டுள்ளன. யாரும் நம்மைப் பார்க்க முடியாது. நாங்கள் உன்மேல் வேட்கை கொண்டுள்ளோம். எனவே நீ எங்களுக்கு இணங்கி எங்களோடு படு. இல்லாவிடில், ஓர் இளைஞன் உன்னோடு இருந்தான் என்றும், அதற்காகவே நீ பணிப்பெண்களை வெளியே அனுப்பிவிட்டாய் என்றும் உனக்கு எதிராக நாங்கள் சான்று கூறுவோம்” என்றார்கள். சூசன்னா பெருமூச்சு விட்டு, ‘‘நான் பெரும் சிக்கலில் மாட்டிக்கொண்டேன். நான் உங்களுக்கு இணங்கினால், எனக்குக் கிடைப்பது சாவு; இணங்காவிட்டால் நான் உங்களிடமிருந்து தப்ப முடியாது. ஆனால் ஆண்டவர் முன்னிலையில் பாவம் செய்வதை விட, அதைச் செய்யாமல் உங்களிடம் மாட்டிக்கொள்வதே மேல்” என்றார். பின் சூசன்னா உரத்த குரலில் கத்தினார். உடனே முதியோர் இருவரும் அவருக்கு எதிராக கூச்சலிட்டனர். அவர்களுள் ஒருவர் ஓடிப்போய்த் தோட்டத்துக் கதவுகளைத் திறந்தார். தோட்டத்தில் கூச்சல் கேட்டதும், சூசன்னாவுக்கு என்ன நிகழ்ந்ததோ என்று அறிய அவர் வீட்டில் இருந்தோர் ஓரக் கதவு வழியே ஓடிவந்தனர். ஆனால் முதியோர் தங்கள் கட்டுக் கதையைச் சொன்னபொழுது, பணியாளர் பெரிதும் நாணங்கொண்டனர்; ஏனெனில் சூசன்னாவைப் பற்றி இது போன்ற எதையும் அவர்கள் இதற்கு முன் கேள்விப்பட்டதில்லை.

மறுநாள் சூசன்னாவுடைய கணவர் யோவாக்கிம் வீட்டில் மக்கள் திரண்டு வந்தார்கள். சூசன்னாவைக் கொல்லும் தீய நோக்குடன் அந்த முதியோர் இருவரும் சேர்ந்து வந்திருந்தனர். அவர்கள் மக்கள் முன்னிலையில், ‘‘கில்கியா மகளும் யோவாக்கிம் மனைவியுமான சூசன்னாவை இங்கு அழைத்து வருமாறு ஆள் அனுப்புங்கள்” என்று கட்டளையிட்டார்கள். உடனே அவரை அழைத்து வர ஆள் அனுப்பினர். சூசன்னா வந்தார். அவரோடு அவருடைய பெற்றோர், பிள்ளைகள், உறவினர் எல்லாரும் வந்தனர். அவருடைய உற்றார் உறவினரும், அவரைப் பார்த்தவர் அனைவருமே அழுதுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள். முதியோர் இருவரும் மக்கள் நடுவே எழுந்து நின்று, சூசன்னா தலைமீது தங்கள் கைகளை வைத்தனர். அவரோ அழுதுகொண்டே விண்ணக இறைவனை நோக்கினார்; ஏனெனில் அவர் உள்ளம் ஆண்டவரை நம்பியிருந்தது. அப்பொழுது முதியோர் பின்வருமாறு கூறினர்: ‘‘நாங்கள் தோட்டத்தில் தனியாக உலாவிக் கொண்டிருந்த பொழுது, இவள் இரு பணிப்பெண்களோடு உள்ளே வந்தாள்; தோட்டத்து வாயில்களை மூடியபின், பணிப் பெண்களை வெளியே அனுப்பி விட்டாள். பின்னர் அங்கே ஒளிந்துகொண்டிருந்த ஓர் இளைஞன் இவளிடம் வந்து இவளோடு படுத்தான். நாங்களோ தோட்டத்தின் ஒரு மூலையில் இருந்தோம்; இந்த நெறிகெட்ட செயலைக் கண்டதும் அவர்களிடம் ஓடிச் சென்றோம். அவர்கள் சேர்ந்திருந்ததைப் பார்த்தோம். ஆனால் அந்த இளைஞனை எங்களால் பிடிக்க முடியவில்லை; ஏனெனில் அவன் எங்களை விட வலிமை மிக்கவன். எனவே அவன் கதவைத் திறந்து வெளியே ஓடிவிட்டான். நாங்கள் இவளைப் பிடித்து, அந்த இளைஞன் யார் என்று கேட்டோம். இவளோ எங்களுக்கு மறுமொழி கூற மறுத்துவிட்டாள். இவற்றுக்கு நாங்களே சாட்சி”. அவர்கள் மக்களுள் மூப்பர்களாகவும் நடுவர்களாகவும் இருந்ததால், மக்கள் கூட்டம் அவர்கள் சொன்னதை நம்பி சூசன்னாவுக்குச் சாவுத் தீர்ப்பிட்டது.

அப்பொழுது சூசன்னா உரத்த குரலில் கதறி, ‘‘என்றுமுள்ள இறைவா, மறைவானவற்றை நீர் அறிகிறீர். நிகழுமுன்பே எல்லாம் உமக்குத் தெரியும். இவர்கள் எனக்கு எதிராகப் பொய்ச் சான்று சொல்லியுள்ளனர் என்பதும் உமக்குத் தெரியும். இவர்கள் என்மீது சாட்டிய குற்றம் எதுவும் நான் செய்தறியேன். ஆயினும், இதோ நான் சாகவேண்டியிருக்கிறதே!” என்று சொன்னார். ஆண்டவர் சூசன்னாவுடைய கூக்குரலுக்குச் செவிசாய்த்தார்.

கொல்லப்படுமாறு அவர் நடத்திச் செல்லப்பட்டபொழுது, தானியேல் என்னும் பெயருடைய இளைஞரிடம் தூய ஆவியைக் கடவுள் தூண்டி விட்டார். தானியேல் உரத்த குரலில், ‘‘இவருடைய இரத்தப் பழியில் எனக்குப் பங்கில்லை” என்று கத்தினார். மக்கள் அனைவரும் அவர்பால் திரும்பி, ‘‘நீர் என்ன சொல்கிறீர்?” என்று வினவினர். அவரோ அவர்கள் நடுவே நின்றுகொண்டு பின்வருமாறு சொன்னார்: ‘‘இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களே, வழக்கை ஆராயாமலும், உண்மையை அறிந்துகொள்ளாமலும் இஸ்ரயேல் மகள் ஒருத்தியைத் தீர்ப்பிடத் துணிந்துவிட்டீர்களே! அந்த அளவுக்கு நீங்கள் அறிவிலிகளா? நீதி வழங்கும் இடத்திற்குத் திரும்பிப் போங்கள்; இம்மனிதர்கள் இவருக்கு எதிராகப் பொய்ச் சான்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள்” என்றார்.

எனவே மக்கள் எல்லாரும் விரைவாகத் திரும்பி வந்தார்கள். மற்ற மூப்பர்கள் தானியேலிடம், ‘‘நீர் வந்து, எங்கள் நடுவே அமர்ந்து, எங்களுக்கு விரிவாய் விளக்கிக் காட்டும்; ஏனெனில் மூப்பருக்குரிய சிறப்பை கடவுள் உமக்கு அளித்துள்ளார்” என்று வேண்டிக்கொண்டார்கள். அப்பொழுது தானியேல், ‘‘இவர்களைத் தனித்தனியே பிரித்துத் தொலையில் வையுங்கள். நான் இவர்களை வினவுவேன்” என்றார். எனவே அவர்கள் இருவரையும் தனித்தனியே பிரித்து வைத்தார்கள். அப்பொழுது தானியேல் அவர்களுள் ஒருவரை அழைத்து, ‘‘தீச்செயலில் விளைந்தவனே! நீ முன்பு செய்த பாவங்கள் இப்பொழுது வெளியாகிவிட்டன. ‘‘மாசற்றவர்களையும் நீதிமான்களையும் சாவுக்கு உள்ளாக்காதே” என்று ஆண்டவர் சொல்லியிருந்தும் நீ முறைகேடாகத் தீர்ப்புகள் வழங்கி, மாசற்றவர்களைத் தண்டித்து, குற்றவாளிகளை விடுவித்துள்ளாய். இதோ! நீ உண்மையிலேயே சூசன்னாவைப் பார்த்திருந்தால், எந்த மரத்தடியில் அவர்கள் கூடியிருக்கக் கண்டாய், சொல்” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர், ‘‘விளா மரத்தடியில்” என்றார். அதற்குத் தானியேல், ‘‘நீ நன்றாகப் பொய் சொல்கிறாய். அது உன் தலைமேலேயே விழும். ஏனெனில் கடவுளின் தூதர் ஏற்கெனவே இறைவனிடமிருந்து தீர்ப்பைப் பெற்றுவிட்டார். அவர் உன்னை இரண்டாக வெட்டிப் பிளப்பார்” என்றார்.

பின் அவரை அனுப்பிவிட்டு மற்றவரைத் தம்மிடம் அழைத்து வருமாறு பணித்தார். அவரை நோக்கி, ‘‘நீ யூதாவுக்கல்ல, கானானுக்குப் பிறந்தவன். அழகு உன்னை மயக்கிவிட்டது; காமம் உன்னை நெறிதவறச் செய்து விட்டது. நீங்கள் இருவரும் இஸ்ரயேல் மகளிரை இவ்வாறே நடத்தி வந்திருக் கிறீர்கள். அவர்களும் அச்சத்தால் உங்களுக்கு இணங்கிவந்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் யூதாவின் மகளாகிய இவரால் உங்கள் தீச்செயலைப் பொறுத்துக் கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. இதோ! எந்த மரத்தடியில் சேர்ந்திருக்கும்பொழுது நீ இவர்களைப் பிடித்தாய்? சொல்” என்றார். அவரோ, ‘‘கருவாலி மரத்தடியில்” என்றார். தானியேல் அவரிடம், ‘‘நீயும் நன்றாகப் பொய் சொல்கிறாய். அது உன் தலைமேலேயே விழும். ஏனெனில் உன்னை இரு கூறாக வெட்டவும், இவ்வாறு உங்கள் இருவரையும் அழித்தொழிக்கவும் கடவுளின் தூதர் வாளுடன் காத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்” என்றார். உடனே மக்கள் கூட்டம் முழுவதும் உரத்த குரல் எழுப்பி, தம்மில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்போருக்கு மீட்பளிக்கும் கடவுளைப் போற்றியது. அவர்கள் அந்த முதியோர் இருவருக்கும் எதிராக எழுந்தார்கள்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் பொய்ச் சான்று சொன்னதை அவர்கள் வாய்மொழியாகவே தானியேல் மெய்ப்பித்திருந்தார். அம்முதியோர் பிறருக்குச் செய்ய இருந்த தீங்கை அவர்களுக்கே மக்கள் செய்தார்கள். மோசே சட்டப்படி அவர்களைக் கொன்றார்கள். இவ்வாறு மாசற்ற சூசன்னா அன்று காப்பாற்றப்பட்டார்.

At that time: Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

In those days: There was a man living in Babylon whose name was Joakim. And he took a wife named Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, a very beautiful woman and one who feared the Lord. Her parents were righteous and had taught their daughter according to the law of Moses. Joakim was very rich and had a spacious garden adjoining his house; and the Jews used to come to him because he was the most honoured of them all. In that year two elders from the people were appointed as judges. Concerning them the Lord had said: “Iniquity came forth from Babylon, from elders who were judges, who were supposed to govern the people.” These men were frequently at Joakim’s house, and all who had lawsuits came to them. When the people departed at noon, Susanna would go into her husband’s garden to walk. The two elders used to see her every day, going in and walking about, and they began to desire her. And they perverted their minds and turned away their eyes from looking to heaven or remembering righteous judgments. Once, while they were watching for an opportune day, she went in as before with only two maids and wished to bathe in the garden, for it was very hot. And no one was there except the two elders, who had hid themselves and were watching her. She said to her maids, “Bring me oil and ointments and shut the garden doors so that I may bathe.” When the maids had gone out, the two elders rose and ran to her and said: “Look, the garden doors are shut, no one sees us, and we lust for you; so give your consent and be with us. If you refuse, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and this was why you sent your maids away from you.” Susanna sighed deeply and said, “I am hemmed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death for me; and if I do not, I shall not escape your hands. I choose not to do it and to fall into your hands, rather than to sin in the sight of the Lord.” Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice, and the two elders shouted against her. And one of them ran and opened the garden doors. When the household servants heard the shouting in the garden, they rushed in at the side door to see what had happened to her. And when the elders told their tale, the servants were greatly ashamed, for nothing like this had ever been said about Susanna. The next day, when the people gathered to her husband Joakim, the two elders came, full of their wicked plot to have Susanna put to death. They said before the people, “Send for Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, who is the wife of Joakim.” So they sent for her. And she came, with her parents, her children, and all her kindred. But her family and friends and all who saw her wept. Then the two elders stood up in the midst of the people and laid their hands upon her head. And she, weeping, looked up toward heaven, for her heart trusted in the Lord. The elders said, “As we were walking in the garden alone, this woman came in with two maids, shut the garden doors, and dismissed the maids. Then a young man, who had been hidden, came to her and lay with her. We were in a corner of the garden, and when we saw this wickedness we ran to them. We saw them embracing, but we could not hold the man, for he was too strong for us, and he opened the doors and dashed out. So we seized this woman and asked her who the young man was, but she would not tell us. These things we testify.” The assembly believed them, because they were elders of the people and judges; and they condemned her to death. Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “O eternal God, who does discern what is secret, who is aware of all things before they come to be, you know that these men have borne false witness against me. And now I am to die! Yet I have done none of the things that they have wickedly invented against me!” The Lord heard her cry. And as she was being led away to be put to death, God aroused the holy spirit of a young lad named Daniel; and he cried with a loud voice, “I am innocent of the blood of this woman.” All the people turned to him and said, “What is this that you have said?” Taking his stand in the midst of them, he said, “Are you such fools, you sons of Israel? Have you condemned a daughter of Israel without examination and without learning the facts? Return to the place of judgment. For these men have borne false witness against her.” Then all the people returned in haste. And the elders said to him, “Come, sit among us and inform us, for God has given you that right.” And Daniel said to them, “Separate them far from each other, and I will examine them.” When they were separated from each other, he summoned one of them and said to him, “You old relic of wicked days, your sins have now come home, which you have committed in the past, pronouncing unjust judgments, condemning the innocent, and letting the guilty go free, though the Lord said, ‘Do not put to death an innocent and righteous person.’ Now then, if you really saw her, tell me this: Under what tree did you see them being intimate with each other?” He answered, “Under a mastic tree.” And Daniel said, “Very well! You have lied against your own head, for the angel of God has received the sentence from God and will immediately cut you in two.” Then he put him aside and commanded them to bring the other. And he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you and lust has perverted your heart. This is how you both have been dealing with the daughters of Israel, and they were intimate with you through fear; but a daughter of Judah would not endure your wickedness. Now then, tell me: Under what tree did you catch them being intimate with each other?” He answered, “Under an evergreen oak.” And Daniel said to him, “Very well! You also have lied against your own head, for the angel of God is waiting with his sword to saw you in two, that he may destroy you both.” Then all the assembly shouted loudly and blessed God, who saves those who hope in him. And they rose against the two elders, for out of their own mouths Daniel had convicted them of bearing false witness; and they did to them as they had wickedly planned to do to their neighbour; acting in accordance with the law of Moses, they put them to death. Thus innocent blood was saved that day.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 11:1-45 

There was a man named Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany with the two sisters, Mary and Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, ‘Lord, the man you love is ill.’ On receiving the message, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will end not in death but in God’s glory, and through it the Son of God will be glorified.’

  Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, yet when he heard that Lazarus was ill he stayed where he was for two more days before saying to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judaea.’ The disciples said, ‘Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews wanted to stone you; are you going back again?’ Jesus replied:

‘Are there not twelve hours in the day?

A man can walk in the daytime without stumbling

because he has the light of this world to see by;

but if he walks at night he stumbles,

because there is no light to guide him.’

He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is resting, I am going to wake him.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is able to rest he is sure to get better.’ The phrase Jesus used referred to the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant ‘sleep’, so Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.’ Then Thomas – known as the Twin – said to the other disciples, ‘Let us go too, and die with him.’

  On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said:

‘I am the resurrection and the life.

If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live,

and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

Do you believe this?’

‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

  When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, ‘The Master is here and wants to see you.’ Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were in the house sympathising with Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who followed her, Jesus said in great distress, with a sigh that came straight from the heart, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept; and the Jews said, ‘See how much he loved him!’ But there were some who remarked, ‘He opened the eyes of the blind man, could he not have prevented this man’s death?’ Still sighing, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening. Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away.’ Martha said to him, ‘Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day.’ Jesus replied, ‘Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said:

‘Father, I thank you for hearing my prayer.

I knew indeed that you always hear me,

but I speak for the sake of all these who stand round me,

so that they may believe it was you who sent me.’

When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, here! Come out!’ The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with bands of stuff and a cloth round his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, let him go free.’

  Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what he did believed in him.

The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you

People who are interested only in unspiritual things can never be pleasing to God. Your interests, however, are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him. Though your body may be dead it is because of sin, but if Christ is in you then your spirit is life itself because you have been justified; and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.

தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: என் மக்களே! இதோ நான் உங்கள் கல்லறைகளைத் திறக்கப் போகிறேன். உங்களை உங்கள் கல்லறைகளினின்று மேலே கொண்டு வருவேன். உங்களுக்கு இஸ்ரயேல் நாட்டைத் திரும்பக் கொடுப்பேன். அப்போது, என் மக்களே! நான் உங்கள் கல்லறைகளைத் திறந்து உங்களை அவற்றிலிருந்து வெளிக் கொணர்கையில், நானே ஆண்டவர் என்பதை அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள். என் ஆவியை உங்கள்மீது பொழிவேன். நீங்களும் உயிர் பெறுவீர்கள். நானும் உங்களை உங்கள் சொந்த நாட்டில் குடியமர்த்துவேன். ‘ஆண்டவராகிய நான் உரைத்தேன்; நானே இதைச் செய்தேன்’ என அப்போது அறிந்து கொள்வீர்கள், என்கிறார் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவர்.

அக்காலத்தில்

யூதர்களின் திருவிழா கூட்டத்தில் சிலர் இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு, “வரவேண்டிய இறைவாக்கினர் உண்மையில் இவரே” என்றனர். வேறு சிலர், “மெசியா இவரே” என்றனர். மற்றும் சிலர், “கலிலேயாவிலிருந்தா மெசியா வருவார்? தாவீதின் மரபிலிருந்தும் அவர் குடியிருந்த பெத்லகேம் ஊரிலிருந்தும் மெசியா வருவார் என்றல்லவா மறைநூல் கூறுகிறது?” என்றனர். இப்படி அவரைக் குறித்து மக்களிடையே பிளவு ஏற்பட்டது. சிலர் அவரைப் பிடிக்க விரும்பினர். ஆனால் யாரும் அவரைத் தொடவில்லை.

தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயர்களும் அனுப்பியிருந்த காவலர்கள் அவர்களிடம் திரும்பி வந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் காவலர்களிடம், “ஏன் அவனைப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு வரவில்லை?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். காவலர் மறுமொழியாக, “அவரைப்போல எவரும் என்றுமே பேசியதில்லை” என்றனர். பரிசேயர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நீங்களும் ஏமாந்து போனீர்களோ? தலைவர்களிலாவது பரிசேயர்களிலாவது அவனை நம்புவோர் யாராவது உண்டா? இம்மக்கள் கூட்டத்துக்குத் திருச்சட்டம் தெரியாது. இவர்கள் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்” என்றனர். அங்கிருந்த பரிசேயருள் ஒருவர் நிக்கதேம். அவரே முன்பு ஒரு நாள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தவர். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “ஒருவரது வாக்குமூலத்தைக் கேளாது, அவர் என்ன செய்தாரென்று அறியாது ஒருவருக்குத் தீர்ப்பளிப்பது நமது சட்டப்படி முறையாகுமா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் மறுமொழியாக, “நீரும் கலிலேயரா என்ன? மறைநூலைத் துருவி ஆய்ந்து பாரும். அப்போது கலிலேயாவிலிருந்து இறைவாக்கினர் யாரும் தோன்றுவதில்லை என்பதை அறிந்துகொள்வீர்” என்றார்கள். அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவர் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றார்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 7: 40-52

At that time: When they heard the words of Jesus, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.” They went each to his own house.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 7: 1-2,10,25-30 

At that time: Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? A Reading from the book of Wisdom 2:1,12-22

Ungodly men reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves, “Let us lie in wait for the righteous man, because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions; he reproaches us for sins against the law and accuses us of sins against our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and calls himself a child of the Lord. He became to us a reproof of our thoughts; the very sight of him is a burden to us, because his manner of life is unlike that of others and his ways are strange. We are considered by him as something base, and he avoids our ways as unclean; he calls the last end of the righteous happy and boasts that God is his father. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen at the end of his life; for if the righteous man is God’s son, he will help him and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. Let us test him with insult and torture, that we may find out how gentle he is and make trial of his forbearance. Let us condemn him to a shameful death for, according to what he says, he will be protected.” Thus they reasoned, but they were led astray, for their wickedness blinded them, and they did not know the secret purposes of God or hope for the wages of holiness or discern the prize for blameless souls.
