When you have lifted up the Son of Man then you will know that I am He

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 8:21-30 

At that time: Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” As he was saying these things, many believed in him.

O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you. Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear toward me; on the day when I call, speedily answer me.

The nations shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the earth’s kings your glory. When the Lord shall build up Sion, he will appear in all his glory. Then he will turn to the prayers of the helpless; he will not despise their prayers.

A Reading from the Book of Numbers 21: 4-9 

In those days: From Mount Hor the Hebrews set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go round the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு பரிசேயர்களை நோக்கி, “நான் போனபின் நீங்கள் என்னைத் தேடுவீர்கள். நான் போகுமிடத்திற்கு உங்களால் வர இயலாது. நீங்கள் பாவிகளாகவே சாவீர்கள்” என்றார். யூதர்கள், “ ‘நான் போகும் இடத்திற்கு உங்களால் வர இயலாது’ என்று சொல்கிறாரே, ஒருவேளை தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ளப்போகிறாரோ?” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் கீழிருந்து வந்தவர்கள்; நான் மேலிருந்து வந்தவன். நீங்கள் இவ்வுலகைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள். ஆனால் நான் இவ்வுலகைச் சார்ந்தவன் அல்ல. ஆகவேதான் நீங்கள் பாவிகளாகவே சாவீர்கள் என்று உங்களிடம் சொன்னேன். ‘இருக்கிறவர் நானே’ என்பதை நீங்கள் நம்பாவிடில் நீங்கள் பாவிகளாய்ச் சாவீர்கள்” என்றார்.

அவர்கள், “நீர் யார்?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார்கள். அவர், “நான் யார் என்று தொடக்கத்திலிருந்தே சொல்லி வந்துள்ளேன். உங்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசுவதற்கும் தீர்ப்பிடுவதற்கும் பல உண்டு. ஆனால் என்னை அனுப்பியவர் உண்மையானவர். நானும் அவரிடமிருந்து கேட்டவற்றையே உலகுக்கு எடுத்துரைக்கிறேன்” என்றார். தந்தையைப் பற்றியே அவர் பேசினார் என்பதை அவர்கள் உணர்ந்துகொள்ளவில்லை.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் மானிடமகனை உயர்த்தியபின்பு, ‘இருக்கிறவர் நானே'; நானாக எதையும் செய்வதில்லை; மாறாகத் தந்தை கற்றுத்தந்ததையே நான் எடுத்துரைக்கிறேன் என்பதை அறிந்து கொள்வீர்கள். என்னை அனுப்பியவர் என்னோடு இருக்கிறார். அவர் என்னைத் தனியாக விட்டுவிடுவதில்லை. நானும் அவருக்கு உகந்தவற்றையே எப்போதும் செய்கிறேன்” என்றார். அவர் இவற்றைச் சொன்னபோது பலர் அவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர்.

ஆண்டவரே! என் மன்றாட்டைக் கேட்டருளும்! என் அபயக் குரல் உம்மிடம் வருவதாக!

நான் இடுக்கண் உற்ற நாளிலே உமது முகத்தை மறைக்காதீர்! உமது செவியை என் பக்கமாகத் திருப்பியருளும்! நான் மன்றாடும் நாளில் விரைவாய் எனக்குப் பதிலளியும்! - பல்லவி

வேற்றினத்தார் ஆண்டவரின் பெயருக்கு அஞ்சுவர்; பூவுலகின் மன்னர் யாவரும் அவரது மாட்சியைக் கண்டு மருள்வர்.

ஏனெனில் ஆண்டவர் சீயோனைக் கட்டியெழுப்புவார்; அங்கு அவர் தம் மாட்சியுடன் திகழ்வார்.

திக்கற்றவர்களின் வேண்டுதலுக்கு அவர் செவிகொடுப்பார்; அவர்களின் மன்றாட்டை அவமதியார். - பல்லவி

இனி வரவிருக்கும் தலைமுறைக்கென இது எழுதி வைக்கப்படட்டும்; படைக்கப்படவிருக்கும் மக்கள் ஆண்டவரைப் புகழட்டும்.

ஆண்டவர் தம் மேலுலகத் திருத்தலத்தினின்று கீழே நோக்கினார்; அவர் விண்ணுலகினின்று வையகத்தைக் கண்ணோக்கினார்.

அவர் சிறைப்பட்டோரின் புலம்பலுக்குச் செவிசாய்ப்பார்; சாவுக்கென குறிக்கப்பட்டவர்களை விடுவிப்பார். - பல்லவி

பாம்பு கடித்த எந்த ஒரு மனிதனும் இந்த வெண்கலப் பாம்பைப் பார்த்து உயிர் பிழைப்பான்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஏதோம் நாட்டைச் சுற்றிப்போகும்படி ஓர் என்ற மலையிலிருந்து இஸ்ரயேலர் ‘செங்கடல் சாலை’ வழியாகப் பயணப்பட்டனர்; அவ்வழியை முன்னிட்டு மக்கள் பொறுமை இழந்தனர். மக்கள் கடவுளுக்கும் மோசேக்கும் எதிராகப் பேசினர்: “இந்தப் பாலைநிலத்தில் மாளும்படி எங்களை எகிப்திலிருந்து கொண்டுவந்தது ஏன்? இங்கு உணவுமில்லை, தண்ணீருமில்லை, அற்பமான இந்த உணவு எங்களுக்கு வெறுத்துப் போய்விட்டது” என்றனர். உடனே ஆண்டவர் கொள்ளிவாய்ப் பாம்புகளை மக்களிடையே அனுப்பினார்; அவை கடிக்கவே இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களில் பலர் மாண்டனர். அப்போது மக்கள் மோசேயிடம் வந்து, “நாங்கள் பாவம் செய்துள்ளோம்; நாங்கள் ஆண்டவருக்கும் உமக்கும் எதிராகப் பேசியுள்ளோம்; அவர் இந்தப் பாம்புகளை அகற்றிவிடும்படி நீர் ஆண்டவரிடம் வேண்டிக்கொள்ளும்” என்றனர். அவ்வாறே மோசே மக்களுக்காக மன்றாடினார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர் மோசேயிடம், “கொள்ளிவாய்ப் பாம்பு ஒன்றைச் செய்து அதை ஒரு கம்பத்தில் பொருத்து; கடிக்கப்பட்டோரில் இதைப் பார்க்கிற ஒவ்வொருவனும் பிழைப்பான்” என்றார். அவ்வாறே மோசே ஒரு வெண்கலப் பாம்பைச் செய்து அதை ஒரு கம்பத்தில் பொருத்தினார்; பாம்பு கடித்த எந்த ஒரு மனிதனும் இந்த வெண்கலப் பாம்பைப் பார்த்து உயிர் பிழைப்பான்.
