அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்தைக் கண்டு மலைமீது ஏறி அமர, அவருடைய சீடர் அவர் அருகே வந்தனர். அவர் திருவாய் மலர்ந்து கற்பித்தவை:

“ஏழையரின் உள்ளத்தோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் விண்ணரசு அவர்களுக்கு உரியது. துயருறுவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் ஆறுதல் பெறுவர். கனிவுடையோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நாட்டை உரிமைச் சொத்தாக்கிக் கொள்வர். நீதி நிலைநாட்டும் வேட்கை கொண்டோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நிறைவு பெறுவர். இரக்கமுடையோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் இரக்கம் பெறுவர். தூய்மையான உள்ளத்தோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் கடவுளைக் காண்பர். அமைதி ஏற்படுத்துவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் கடவுளின் மக்கள் என அழைக்கப்படுவர். நீதியின் பொருட்டுத் துன்புறுத்தப்படுவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் விண்ணரசு அவர்களுக்குரியது.

என் பொருட்டு மக்கள் உங்களை இகழ்ந்து, துன்புறுத்தி, உங்களைப் பற்றி இல்லாதவை பொல்லாதவையெல்லாம் சொல்லும்போது நீங்கள் பேறுபெற்றவர்களே! மகிழ்ந்து பேருவகை கொள்ளுங்கள்! ஏனெனில் விண்ணுலகில் உங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கும் கைம்மாறு மிகுதியாகும்.”

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நம் தந்தை நம்மிடம் எத்துணை அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளார் என்று பாருங்கள். நாம் கடவுளின் மக்களென அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம்; கடவுளின் மக்களாகவே இருக்கிறோம். உலகம் அவரை அறிந்துகொள்ளாததால்தான் நம்மையும் அறிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. என் அன்பார்ந்தவர்களே, இப்போது நாம் கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளாய் இருக்கிறோம். இனி எத்தன்மையராய் இருப்போம் என்பது இன்னும் வெளிப்படவில்லை. ஆனால் அவர் தோன்றும்போது நாமும் அவரைப் போல் இருப்போம்; ஏனெனில் அவர் இருப்பதுபோல் அவரைக் காண்போம். அவரை எதிர்நோக்கி இருக்கிற அனைவரும் அவர் தூயவராய் இருப்பது போல் தம்மையே தூயவராக்க வேண்டும்.

இதன்பின் யாராலும் எண்ணிக்கையிட முடியாத பெரும் திரளான மக்களைக் கண்டேன். அவர்கள் எல்லா நாட்டையும் குலத்தையும் மக்களினத்தையும் மொழியையும் சார்ந்தவர்கள்; அரியணைக்கும் ஆட்டுக் குட்டிக்கும் முன்பாக நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள்; வெண்மையான தொங்கலாடை அணிந்தவர்களாய்க் கையில் குருத்தோலைகளைப் பிடித்திருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள், “அரியணையில் வீற்றிருக்கும் எங்கள் கடவுளிடமிருந்தும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டியிடமிருந்துமே மீட்பு வருகிறது” என்று உரத்த குரலில் பாடினார்கள்.

அப்பொழுது வானதூதர்கள் அனைவரும் அரியணையையும் மூப்பர்களையும் நான்கு உயிர்களையும் சூழ்ந்து நின்றுகொண்டு இருந்தார்கள்; பின் அரியணைமுன் முகம் குப்புற விழுந்து கடவுளை வணங்கினார்கள். “ஆமென், புகழ்ச்சியும் பெருமையும் ஞானமும் நன்றியும் மாண்பும் வல்லமையும் வலிமையும் எங்கள் கடவுளுக்கே என்றென்றும் உரியன; ஆமென்” என்று பாடினார்கள்.

மூப்பர்களுள் ஒருவர், “வெண்மையான தொங்கலாடை அணிந்துள்ள இவர்கள் யார்? எங்கிருந்து வந்தவர்கள் தெரியுமா?” என்று என்னை வினவினார். நான் அவரிடம், “என் தலைவரே, அது உமக்குத்தான் தெரியும்” என்றேன்.

அதற்கு அவர் என்னிடம் கூறியது: “இவர்கள் கொடிய வேதனையில் இருந்து மீண்டவர்கள்; தங்களின் தொங்கலாடைகளை ஆட்டுக்குட்டியின் இரத்தத்தில் துவைத்து வெண்மையாக்கிக் கொண்டவர்கள்.”

Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:

‘How happy are the poor in spirit;

  theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Happy the gentle:

  they shall have the earth for their heritage.

Happy those who mourn:

  they shall be comforted.

Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right:

  they shall be satisfied.

Happy the merciful:

  they shall have mercy shown them.

Happy the pure in heart:

  they shall see God.

Happy the peacemakers:

  they shall be called sons of God.

Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:

  theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

அக்காலத்தில்

மறைநூல் அறிஞருள் ஒருவர், இயேசு சதுசேயர்களுக்கு நன்கு பதில் கூறிக்கொண்டிருந்ததைக் கண்டு அவரை அணுகி வந்து, “அனைத்திலும் முதன்மையான கட்டளை எது?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு இயேசு, “ ‘இஸ்ரயேலே கேள். நம் ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் ஒருவரே ஆண்டவர். உன் முழு இதயத்தோடும் முழு உள்ளத்தோடும் முழு மனத்தோடும் முழு ஆற்றலோடும் உன் ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுளிடம் அன்புகூர்வாயாக’ என்பது முதன்மையான கட்டளை. ‘உன்மீது நீ அன்புகூர்வதுபோல் உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர்மீதும் அன்புகூர்வாயாக’ என்பது இரண்டாவது கட்டளை. இவற்றைவிட மேலான கட்டளை வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை” என்றார்.

அதற்கு மறைநூல் அறிஞர் அவரிடம், “நன்று போதகரே, ‘கடவுள் ஒருவரே; அவரைத் தவிர வேறு ஒரு கடவுள் இல்லை’ என்று நீர் கூறியது உண்மையே. அவரிடம் முழு இதயத்தோடும் முழு அறிவோடும் முழு ஆற்றலோடும் அன்பு செலுத்துவதும், தன்னிடம் அன்பு கொள்வதுபோல் அடுத்திருப்பவரிடமும் அன்பு செலுத்துவதும் எரிபலிகளையும் வேறு பலிகளையும்விட மேலானது” என்று கூறினார். அவர் அறிவுத்திறனோடு பதிலளித்ததைக் கண்ட இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் இறையாட்சியினின்று தொலையில் இல்லை” என்றார். அதன்பின் எவரும் அவரிடம் எதையும் கேட்கத் துணியவில்லை.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

லேவியர் குலத்தைச் சார்ந்த குருக்கள் சாவுக்கு ஆளானவர்களாய் இருந்ததால் தம் பணியில் நிலைத்திருக்க முடியவில்லை. வேறு பலர் தொடர்ந்து குருக்களாயினர். இவரோ, என்றென்றும் நிலைத்திருப்பதால், மாறாத குருத்துவப் பணியைப் பெற்றுள்ளார். ஆதலின், தம் வழியாகக் கடவுளிடம் வருபவரை அவர் முற்றும் மீட்க வல்லவராய் இருக்கிறார்; அவர்களுக்காகப் பரிந்து பேசுவதற்கென என்றுமே உயிர் வாழ்கிறார்.

இத்தகைய தலைமைக் குருவே நமக்கு ஏற்றவராகிறார். இவர் தூயவர், கபடற்றவர், மாசற்றவர், பாவிகளிடமிருந்து பிரித்தெடுக்கப்பட்டு, வானங்களுக்கு மேலாக உயர்த்தப்பட்டவர். ஏனைய தலைமைக் குருக்கள் செய்வதுபோல, முதலில் தம்முடைய பாவங்களுக்காகவும், பின்னர் மக்களுடைய பாவங்களுக்காகவும் இவர் நாள்தோறும் பலி செலுத்தத் தேவையில்லை. ஏனெனில் தம்மைத்தாமே பலியாகச் செலுத்தி இதை ஒரே ஒரு முறைக்குள் செய்து முடித்தார்.

திருச்சட்டப்படி வலுவற்ற மனிதர்கள் குருக்களாக ஏற்படுத்தப் படுகிறார்கள். ஆனால் அத்திருச்சட்டத்திற்குப் பின்னர், ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறப்பட்ட வாக்கின் மூலம் என்றென்றும் நிறைவுள்ளவரான மகனே குருவாக ஏற்படுத்தப்படுகிறார்.

One of the scribes came up to Jesus and put a question to him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied, ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’ The scribe said to him, ‘Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true: that he is one and there is no other. Christ, because he remains for ever, can never lose his priesthood.

Hebrews 7:23-28 

There used to be a great number of priests under the former covenant, because death put an end to each one of them; but this one, because he remains for ever, can never lose his priesthood. It follows, then, that his power to save is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him.

  To suit us, the ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because he has done this once and for all by offering himself. The Law appoints high priests who are men subject to weakness; but the promise on oath, which came after the Law, appointed the Son who is made perfect for ever.

ஓய்வு நாள் ஒன்றில் இயேசு பரிசேயர் தலைவர் ஒருவருடைய வீட்டிற்கு உணவருந்தச் சென்றிருந்தார். அங்கிருந்தோர் அவரைக் கூர்ந்து கவனித்தனர். விருந்தினர்கள் பந்தியில் முதன்மையான இடங்களைத் தேர்ந்துகொண்டதை நோக்கிய இயேசு அவர்களுக்குக் கூறிய அறிவுரை:

நற்செய்தியை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாததால் அவர்கள் கடவுளுக்குப் பகைவர்கள் ஆயினர்; அதுவும் உங்களுக்கு நன்மையாய் அமைந்தது. ஆனால் அவர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களாய் இருப்பதால் அவர்களுடைய மூதாதையரை முன்னிட்டு அவரது அன்புக்கு உரியவர்கள் ஆனார்கள். ஏனெனில், கடவுள் தாம் விடுத்த அழைப்பையும் கொடுத்த அருள்கொடைகளையும் திரும்பப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை.

The Jews have not fallen for ever.

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 11: 1-2,11-12,25-29 

Let me put a question: is it possible that God has rejected his people? Of course not. I, an Israelite, descended from Abraham through the tribe of Benjamin, could never agree that God had rejected his people, the people he chose specially long ago. Do you remember what scripture says of Elijah – how he complained to God about Israel’s behaviour? Let me put another question then: have the Jews fallen for ever, or have they just stumbled? Obviously they have not fallen for ever: their fall, though, has saved the pagans in a way the Jews may now well emulate. Think of the extent to which the world, the pagan world, has benefited from their fall and defection – then think how much more it will benefit from the conversion of them all. There is a hidden reason for all this, brothers, of which I do not want you to be ignorant, in case you think you know more than you do. One section of Israel has become blind, but this will last only until the whole pagan world has entered, and then after this the rest of Israel will be saved as well. As scripture says: The liberator will come from Zion, he will banish godlessness from Jacob. And this is the covenant I will make with them when I take their sins away.

  The Jews are enemies of God only with regard to the Good News, and enemies only for your sake; but as the chosen people, they are still loved by God, loved for the sake of their ancestors. God never takes back his gifts or revokes his choice.

There in front of him was a man with dropsy, and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees. ‘Is it against the law’ he asked ‘to cure a man on the sabbath, or not?’ But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away. Then he said to them, ‘Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, or his ox, will not pull him out on a sabbath day without hesitation?’ And to this they could find no answer.

I would willingly be condemned if it could help my brothers.

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 9: 1-5 

What I want to say now is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ – it is the truth – my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too. What I want to say is this: my sorrow is so great, my mental anguish so endless, I would willingly be condemned and be cut off from Christ if it could help my brothers of Israel, my own flesh and blood. They were adopted as sons, they were given the glory and the covenants; the Law and the ritual were drawn up for them, and the promises were made to them. They are descended from the patriarchs and from their flesh and blood came Christ who is above all, God for ever blessed! Amen.

இயேசு அவர்களுடன் இறங்கி வந்து சமவெளியான ஓரிடத்தில் நின்றார். பெருந்திரளான அவருடைய சீடர்களும் யூதேயா முழுவதிலிருந்தும் எருசலேமிலிருந்தும் தீர், சீதோன் கடற்கரைப் பகுதிகளிலிருந்தும் வந்த பெருந்திரளான மக்களும் அங்கே இருந்தார்கள். அவர் சொல்வதைக் கேட்கவும் தங்கள் பிணிகள் நீங்கி நலமடையவும் அவர்கள் வந்திருந்தார்கள். தீய ஆவிகளால் தொல்லைக்கு உள்ளானவர்கள் குணமானார்கள். அவரிடமிருந்து வல்லமை வெளிப்பட்டு அனைவர் பிணியையும் போக்கியதால், அங்குத் திரண்டிருந்த மக்கள் யாவரும் அவரைத் தொட முயன்றனர்.

The Spirit himself expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words.

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 8: 26-30 .

The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness. For when we cannot choose words in order to pray properly, the Spirit himself expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words, and God who knows everything in our hearts knows perfectly well what he means, and that the pleas of the saints expressed by the Spirit are according to the mind of God.

  We know that by turning everything to their good God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those that he has called according to his purpose. They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers. He called those he intended for this; those he called he justified, and with those he justified he shared his glory.

இக்காலத்தில் நாம் படும் துன்பங்கள் எதிர்காலத்தில் நமக்காக வெளிப்படப் போகிற மாட்சியோடு ஒப்பிடத் தகுதியற்றவை என நான் எண்ணுகிறேன். இம்மாட்சியுடன் கடவுளின் மக்கள் வெளிப்படுவதைக் காண்பதற்காகப் படைப்பே பேராவலோடு காத்திருக்கிறது. ஏனெனில், படைப்பு பயனற்ற நிலைக்கு உட்பட்டுள்ளது; தானே விரும்பியதால் அப்படி ஆகவில்லை; அதை உட்படுத்தினவரின் விருப்பத்தால் அவ்வாறு ஆயிற்று; எனினும் அது எதிர்நோக்கை இழந்த நிலையில் இல்லை. அது அழிவுக்கு அடிமைப்பட்டிருக்கும் நிலையிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கப்பட்டு, கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய பெருமையையும் விடுதலையையும் தானும் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளும் என்கிற எதிர்நோக்கோடு இருக்கிறது.

இந்நாள் வரை படைப்பு அனைத்தும் ஒருங்கே பேறுகால வேதனையுற்றுத் தவிக்கின்றது என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம். படைப்பு மட்டும் அல்ல; முதல் கொடையாகத் தூய ஆவியைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டுள்ள நாமும் கடவுள் நம்மைத் தம் பிள்ளைகளாக்கப்போகும் நாளை, அதாவது நம் உடலை விடுவிக்கும் நாளை எதிர்நோக்கிப் பெருமூச்சு விடுகிறோம்.

நமக்கு மீட்புக் கிடைத்துவிட்டது. எனினும், எதிர்நோக்கும் அளவில்தான் அது கிடைத்துள்ளது. கண்ணுக்குத் தெரிகிறதை நோக்குதல் எதிர்நோக்கு ஆகாது. ஏற்கெனவே கண்ணால் காண்கிறதை எவராவது எதிர் நோக்குவாரா? நாமோ காணாத ஒன்றை எதிர்நோக்கி இருக்கும்போது அதற்காகத் தளராமனத்தோடு காத்திருக்கிறோம்.

The kingdom of God is like the yeast that leavened three measures of flour.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 13:18-21 

Jesus said, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with? It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air sheltered in its branches.’

  Another thing he said, ‘What shall I compare the kingdom of God with? It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.’
