Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. All the sins he committed will be forgotten from then on; he shall live because of the integrity he has practised. What! Am I likely to take pleasure in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – and not prefer to see him renounce his wickedness and live?

  ‘But if the upright man renounces his integrity, commits sin, copies the wicked man and practises every kind of filth, is he to live? All the integrity he has practised shall be forgotten from then on; but this is because he himself has broken faith and committed sin, and for this he shall die. But you object, “What the Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself has committed. கேட்போர் எல்லாரும் பெற்றுக்கொள்கின்றனர்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: கேளுங்கள், உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; தேடுங்கள், நீங்கள் கண்டடைவீர்கள்; தட்டுங்கள், உங்களுக்குத் திறக்கப்படும். ஏனெனில், கேட்போர் எல்லாரும் பெற்றுக் கொள்கின்றனர்; தேடுவோர் கண்டடைகின்றனர்; தட்டுவோருக்குத் திறக்கப்படும்.

உங்களுள் எவராவது ஒருவர் அப்பத்தைக் கேட்கும் தம் பிள்ளைக்குக் கல்லைக் கொடுப்பாரா? அல்லது, பிள்ளை மீன் கேட்டால் பாம்பைக் கொடுப்பாரா? தீயோர்களாகிய நீங்களே உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு நற்கொடைகள் அளிக்க அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்கள். அப்படியானால் விண்ணுலகில் உள்ள உங்கள் தந்தை தம்மிடம் கேட்போருக்கு இன்னும் மிகுதியாக நன்மைகள் அளிப்பார் அல்லவா!

ஆகையால் பிறர் உங்களுக்குச் செய்யவேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறவற்றை எல்லாம் நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள். இறைவாக்குகளும் திருச்சட்டமும் கூறுவது இதுவே.

The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them:

  ‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.’

A reading from the book of Jonah 3: 1-10

The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.’ Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, ‘Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.’ And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. A proclamation was then promulgated throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his ministers, as follows: ‘Men and beasts, herds and flocks, are to taste nothing; they must not eat, they must not drink water. All are to put on sackcloth and call on God with all their might; and let everyone renounce his evil behaviour and the wicked things he has done. Who knows if God will not change his mind and relent, if he will not renounce his burning wrath, so that we do not perish?’ God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour, and God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.

மக்கள் வந்து கூடக்கூட இயேசு கூறியது: இந்தத் தீய தலைமுறையினர் அடையாளம் கேட்கின்றனர். இவர்களுக்கு யோனாவின் அடையாளத்தைத் தவிர வேறு அடையாளம் எதுவும் கொடுக்கப்படமாட்டாது. யோனா நினிவே மக்களுக்கு அடையாளமாய் இருந்ததைப் போன்று மானிடமகனும் இந்தத் தலைமுறையினருக்கு அடையாளமாய் இருப்பார்.

தீர்ப்பு நாளில் தென்னாட்டு அரசி இத்தலைமுறையினரோடு எழுந்து இவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்வார். ஏனெனில் அவர் சாலமோனின் ஞானத்தைக் கேட்க உலகின் கடைக்கோடியிலிருந்து வந்தவர். ஆனால் இங்கிருப்பவர் சாலமோனிலும் பெரியவர் அல்லவா!

தீர்ப்பு நாளில் நினிவே மக்கள் இத்தலைமுறையினரோடு எழுந்து இவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்வார்கள். ஏனெனில் யோனா அறிவித்த செய்தியைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் மனம் மாறியவர்கள். ஆனால் இங்கிருப்பவர் யோனாவைவிடப் பெரியவர் அல்லவா!

இரண்டாம் முறையாக யோனாவுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது. அவர், “நீ புறப்பட்டு நினிவே மாநகருக்குப் போய், நான் உன்னிடம் சொல்லும் செய்தியை அங்குள்ளோருக்கு அறிவி” என்றார். அவ்வாறே யோனா புறப்பட்டு ஆண்டவரது கட்டளைப்படி நினிவேக்குச் சென்றார். நினிவே ஒரு மாபெரும் நகர். அதைக் கடக்க மூன்று நாள் ஆகும். யோனா நகருக்குள் சென்று, ஒரு நாள் முழுதும் நடந்த பின், உரத்தகுரலில், “இன்னும் நாற்பது நாளில் நினிவே அழிக்கப்படும்” என்று அறிவித்தார்.

நினிவே நகர மக்கள் கடவுளின் செய்தியை நம்பி, எல்லாரும் நோன்பிருக்க முடிவு செய்தார்கள். பெரியோர் சிறியோர் அனைவரும் சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக்கொண்டனர். இந்தச் செய்தி நினிவே அரசனுக்கு எட்டியது. அவன் தன் அரியணையை விட்டிறங்கி, அரச உடையைக் களைந்துவிட்டு, சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக்கொண்டு, சாம்பல் மீது உட்கார்ந்தான். மேலும் அவன் ஓர் ஆணை பிறப்பித்து, அதை நினிவே முழுதும் பறைசாற்றச் செய்தான். “இதனால் அரசரும் அரச அவையினரும் மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும் அறிவிப்பதாவது: எந்த மனிதரும் உணவைச் சுவைத்துக்கூடப் பார்க்கக்கூடாது. ஆடு, மாடு முதலிய விலங்குகளும் தீனி தின்னவோ தண்ணீர் குடிக்கவோ கூடாது. மனிதரும் விலங்குகளும் சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக்கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும். ஒவ்வொருவரும் கடவுளை நோக்கி மன்றாட வேண்டும்; தம் தீய வழிகளையும், தாம் செய்துவரும் கொடுஞ்செயல்களையும் விட்டொழிக்க வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு செய்தால், கடவுள் ஒருவேளை தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக்கொள்வார்; அவரது கடுஞ்சினமும் தணியும்; நமக்கு அழிவு வராது.”

கடவுள் அவர்கள் செய்தது அனைத்தையும் பார்த்தார். அவர்கள் தீய வழிகளினின்று விலகியதை அவர் கண்டு, தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக் கொண்டார்; தாம் அவர்கள்மீது அனுப்புவதாகச் சொல்லியிருந்த தண்டனையை அனுப்பவில்லை.

மற்ற மனிதர் செய்யும் குற்றங்களை நீங்கள் மன்னிப்பீர்களானால் உங்கள் விண்ணகத் தந்தையும் உங்களை மன்னிப்பார். மற்ற மனிதரை நீங்கள் மன்னிக்காவிடில் உங்கள் தந்தையும் உங்கள் குற்றங்களை மன்னிக்க மாட்டார்.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. All the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate men one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left.

  ‘Then the King will say to those on his right hand, “Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you made me welcome; naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me.” Then the virtuous will say to him in reply, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you drink?   ‘“You must not steal nor deal deceitfully or fraudulently with your neighbour. You must not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God. I am the Lord. You must not exploit or rob your neighbour. You must not keep back the labourer’s wage until next morning. You must not curse the dumb, nor put an obstacle in the blind man’s way, but you must fear your God. I am the Lord.

  ‘“You must not be guilty of unjust verdicts. You must neither be partial to the little man nor overawed by the great; you must pass judgement on your neighbour according to justice. At that time: Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you’, and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. However great the number of sins committed, grace was even greater

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 5:12-19

Brethren: Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that Lord God had made. பின்னர் அலகை அவரை எருசலேம் திருநகரத்திற்குக் கூட்டிச் சென்றது. கோவிலின் உயர்ந்த பகுதியில் அவரை நிறுத்தி, “நீர் இறைமகன் என்றால் கீழே குதியும்; ‘கடவுள் தம் தூதருக்கு உம்மைக் குறித்துக் கட்டளையிடுவார். உமது கால் கல்லில் மோதாதபடி அவர்கள் தங்கள் கைகளில் உம்மைத் தாங்கிக் கொள்வார்கள்’ என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது” என்று அலகை அவரிடம் சொன்னது. இயேசு அதனிடம், “ ‘உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரைச் சோதிக்க வேண்டாம்’ எனவும் எழுதியுள்ளதே” என்று சொன்னார்.

மறுபடியும் அலகை அவரை மிக உயர்ந்த ஒரு மலைக்குக் கூட்டிச் சென்று உலக அரசுகள் அனைத்தையும், அவற்றின் மேன்மையையும் அவருக்குக் காட்டி, அவரிடம், “நீர் நெடுஞ்சாண்கிடையாக விழுந்து என்னை வணங்கினால், இவை அனைத்தையும் உமக்குத் தருவேன்” என்றது. அப்பொழுது இயேசு அதனைப் பார்த்து, “அகன்று போ, சாத்தானே, ‘உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரை வணங்கி, அவர் ஒருவருக்கே பணி செய்’ என்றும் மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது” என்றார்.

பின்னர் அலகை அவரை விட்டு அகன்றது. உடனே வானதூதர் வந்து அவருக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்தனர்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஒரே ஒரு மனிதன் வழியாய்ப் பாவம் இந்த உலகத்தில் நுழைந்தது; அந்தப் பாவத்தின் வழியாய்ச் சாவு வந்தது. அதுபோலவே, எல்லா மனிதரும் பாவம் செய்ததால், எல்லா மனிதரையும் சாவு கவ்விக்கொண்டது. திருச்சட்டம் தரப்படுமுன்பும் உலகில் பாவம் இருந்தது; ஆனால், சட்டம் இல்லாதபோது அது பாவமாகக் கருதப்படவில்லை. ஆயினும் ஆதாம் முதல் மோசே வரையில் இருந்தவர்கள் ஆதாமைப்போல் கடவுளின் கட்டளையை மீறிப் பாவம் செய்யவில்லை. எனினும் சாவு அவர்கள்மீதும் ஆட்சி செலுத்திற்று; இந்த ஆதாம் வரவிருந்தவருக்கு முன்னடையாளமாய் இருக்கிறார்.

ஆனால், குற்றத்தின் தன்மை வேறு, அருள் கொடையின் தன்மை வேறு. எவ்வாறெனில், ஒருவர் செய்த குற்றத்தால் பலரும் இறந்தனர். ஆனால் கடவுளின் அருளும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து என்னும் ஒரே மனிதரின் வழியாய் வரும் அருள்கொடையும் பலருக்கும் மிகுதியாய்க் கிடைத்தது. இந்த அருள்கொடையின் விளைவு வேறு, அந்த ஒரு மனிதர் செய்த பாவத்தின் விளைவு வேறு. எவ்வாறெனில், ஒரு மனிதர் செய்த குற்றத்துக்குத் தீர்ப்பாகக் கிடைத்தது தண்டனை. பலருடைய குற்றங்களுக்கும் தீர்ப்பாகக் கிடைத்ததோ அருள்கொடையாக வந்த விடுதலை.

மேலும் ஒருவர் குற்றத்தாலே, அந்த ஒருவர் வழியாகச் சாவு ஆட்சி செலுத்தினதென்றால், அருள் பெருக்கையும் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகும் கொடையையும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து என்னும் ஒருவர் வழியாக அடைந்துகொண்டவர்கள் வாழ்வு பெற்று ஆட்சி செலுத்துவார்கள் என இன்னும் மிக உறுதியாய் நம்பலாம் அன்றோ?

ஆகவே ஒருவரின் குற்றம் எல்லா மனிதருக்கும் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பாய் அமைந்ததுபோல், ஒரே ஒருவரின் ஏற்புடைய செயல் எல்லா மனிதருக்கும் வாழ்வளிக்கும் விடுதலைத் தீர்ப்பாய் அமைந்தது. ஒரு மனிதரின் கீழ்ப்படியாமையால் பலர் பாவிகளானதுபோல், ஒருவரின் கீழ்ப்படிதலால் பலர் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஆகவே ஒருவரின் குற்றம் எல்லா மனிதருக்கும் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பாய் அமைந்ததுபோல், ஒரே ஒருவரின் ஏற்புடைய செயல் எல்லா மனிதருக்கும் வாழ்வளிக்கும் விடுதலைத் தீர்ப்பாய் அமைந்தது. ஒரு மனிதரின் கீழ்ப்படியாமையால் பலர் பாவிகளானதுபோல், ஒருவரின் கீழ்ப்படிதலால் பலர் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்.

ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் நிலத்தின் மண்ணால் மனிதனை உருவாக்கி, அவன் நாசிகளில் உயிர் மூச்சை ஊத, மனிதன் உயிர் உள்ளவன் ஆனான்.

ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் கிழக்கே இருந்த ஏதேனில் ஒரு தோட்டம் அமைத்துத் தாம் உருவாக்கிய மனிதனை அங்கே வைத்தார். ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் கண்ணுக்கு அழகானதும் உண்பதற்குச் சுவையானதுமான எல்லா வகை மரங்களையும், தோட்டத்தின் நடுவில் வாழ்வின் மரத்தையும் நன்மை தீமை அறிவதற்கு ஏதுவான மரத்தையும் மண்ணிலிருந்து வளரச் செய்தார்.

ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் உருவாக்கிய காட்டு விலங்குகளிலெல்லாம் பாம்பு மிகவும் சூழ்ச்சிமிக்கதாக இருந்தது. அது பெண்ணிடம், “கடவுள் உங்களிடம் தோட்டத்திலுள்ள எல்லா மரங்களிலிருந்தும் உண்ணக்கூடாது என்றது உண்மையா?” என்று கேட்டது. பெண் பாம்பிடம், “தோட்டத்தில் இருக்கும் மரங்களின் பழங்களை நாங்கள் உண்ணலாம். ஆனால் ‘தோட்டத்தின் நடுவில் உள்ள மரத்தின் கனியை மட்டும் நீங்கள் உண்ணக்கூடாது; அதைத் தொடவும் கூடாது. மீறினால் நீங்கள் சாவீர்கள்’ என்று கடவுள் சொன்னார், “ என்றாள்.

பாம்பு பெண்ணிடம், “நீங்கள் சாகவே மாட்டீர்கள்; ஏனெனில் நீங்கள் அதிலிருந்து உண்ணும் நாளில் உங்கள் கண்கள் திறக்கப்படும். நீங்கள் கடவுளைப் போல் நன்மை தீமையை அறிவீர்கள் என்பது கடவுளுக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றது.

அந்த மரம் உண்பதற்குச் சுவையானதாகவும் கண்களுக்குக் களிப்பூட்டுவதாகவும் அறிவு பெறுவதற்கு விரும்பத்தக்கதாகவும் இருந்ததைக் கண்டு, பெண் அதன் பழத்தைப் பறித்து உண்டாள். அதைத் தன்னுடனிருந்த தன் கணவனுக்கும் கொடுத்தாள். அவனும் உண்டான். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் இருவரின் கண்களும் திறக்கப்பட்டன; அவர்கள் தாங்கள் ஆடையின்றி இருப்பதை அறிந்தனர். ஆகவே, அத்தி இலைகளைத் தைத்துத் தங்களுக்கு ஆடைகளைச் செய்துகொண்டனர்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சுங்கச் சாவடியில் அமர்ந்திருந்த லேவி என்னும் பெயருடைய வரிதண்டுபவர் ஒருவரைக் கண்டார்; அவரிடம், “என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வா!” என்றார். அவர் அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட்டு எழுந்து இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றிச் சென்றார்.

இந்த லேவி தம் வீட்டில் அவருக்கு ஒரு பெரிய விருந்து அளித்தார். வரிதண்டுபவர்களும் மற்றவர்களும் பெருந்திரளாய் அவர்களோடு பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார்கள். பரிசேயர்களும் அவர்களைச் சேர்ந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களும் முணுமுணுத்து இயேசுவின் சீடரிடம், “வரிதண்டுபவர்க ளோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சேர்ந்து நீங்கள் உண்பதும் குடிப்பதும் ஏன்?” என்று கேட்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “நோயற்றவர்க்கு அல்ல, நோயுற்றவர்க்கே மருத்துவர் தேவை. நேர்மையாளர்களை அல்ல, பாவிகளையே மனம் மாற அழைக்க வந்தேன்” என்றார்.

ஓய்வுநாளின் முறைமைகளினின்று விலகிச் செல்லாது, என் புனித நாளில் உன் விருப்பம் போல் செய்யாதிருந்து, ஓய்வுநாள் ‘மகிழ்ச்சியின் நாள்’ என்றும் ‘ஆண்டவரின் மேன்மைமிகு புனித நாள்’ எனவும் சொல்லி அதற்கு மதிப்புத் தந்து, உன் சொந்த வழிகளில் செல்லவோ உன் சொந்த ஆதாயத்தை நாடவோ வெற்றுப் பேச்சுகளைப் பேசவோ செய்யாதிருந்தால், அப்பொழுது, ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் புரியும் மகிழ்ச்சியைப் பெறுவாய்; நானோ, மண்ணுலகின் உயர்விடங்களில் உன்னை வலம் வரச்செய்வேன்; உன் மூதாதையாகிய யாக்கோபின் உரிமைச் சொத்தின் மூலம் உனக்கு உணவளிப்பேன்; ஆண்டவரின் வாய் இதை உரைத்தது.

And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 58: 1-9a

இறைவனாகிய ஆண்டவர் கூறுகிறார்:

பேரொலி எழுப்பிக் கூப்பிடு, நிறுத்திவிடாதே; எக்காளம் முழங்குவதுபோல் உன் குரலை உயர்த்து; என் மக்களுக்கு அவர்களின் வன்செயல்களையும், யாக்கோபின் குடும்பத்தாருக்கு அவர்களின் பாவத்தையும் எடுத்துக்கூறு. அவர்கள், நேர்மையானவற்றைச் செய்யும் மக்களினம்போலும், தங்கள் கடவுளின் கட்டளையைக் கடைப்பிடிப்போர் போலும் நாள்தோறும் என்னைத் தேடுகின்றார்கள்; என் நெறிமுறைகள் பற்றிய அறிவை நாடுகின்றார்கள்; நேர்மையான நீதித்தீர்ப்புகளை என்னிடம் வேண்டுகின்றார்கள்; கடவுளை அணுகிவர விழைகின்றார்கள். ‘நாங்கள் உண்ணா நோன்பிருந்த பொழுது, நீர் எங்களை நோக்காதது ஏன்? நாங்கள் எங்களைத் தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டபோது நீர் எங்களைக் கவனியாதது ஏன்?’ என்கின்றார்கள்.

நீங்கள் நோன்பிருக்கும் நாளில் உங்கள் ஆதாயத்தையே நாடுகின்றீர்கள்; உங்கள் வேலையாள்கள் அனைவரையும் ஒடுக்குகின்றீர்கள். இதோ, வழக்காடவும், வீண் சண்டையிடவும், கொடும் கையால் தாக்கவுமே நீங்கள் நோன்பிருக்கிறீர்கள்! இன்றுபோல் நீங்கள் உண்ணா நோன்பிருந்தால் உங்கள் குரல் உன்னதத்தில் கேட்கப்படாது.

ஒருவன் தன்னை ஒடுக்கிக்கொள்ளும் நாளையா நான் உண்ணா நோன்பின் நாளாகத் தெரிந்துகொள்வது? ஒருவன் நாணலைப்போல் தன் தலையைத் தாழ்த்திச் சாக்கு உடையையும் சாம்பலையும் அணிந்து கொள்வதா எனக்கு ஏற்ற நோன்பு? இதையா நீங்கள் நோன்பு என்றும் ஆண்டவருக்கு உகந்த நாள் என்றும் அழைக்கின்றீர்கள்?

கொடுமைத் தளைகளை அவிழ்ப்பதும், நுகத்தின் பிணையல்களை அறுப்பதும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரை விடுதலை செய்து அனுப்புவதும், எவ்வகை நுகத்தையும் உடைப்பதும் அன்றோ நான் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் நோன்பு!

பசித்தோர்க்கு உங்கள் உணவைப் பகிர்ந்துகொடுப்பதும், தங்க இடமில்லா வறியோரை உங்கள் இல்லத்திற்கு அழைத்து வருவதும், உடையற்றோரைக் காணும்போது அவர்களுக்கு உடுக்கக் கொடுப்பதும், உங்கள் இனத்தாருக்கு உங்களை மறைத்துக்கொள்ளாதிருப்பதும் அன்றோ நான் விரும்பும் நோன்பு!

அப்பொழுது உன் ஒளி விடியல் போல் எழும்; விரைவில் உனக்கு நலமான வாழ்வு துளிர்க்கும்; உன் நேர்மை உனக்கு முன் செல்லும்; ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி உனக்குப் பின் சென்று காக்கும். அப்போது நீ ஆண்டவரை மன்றாடுவாய்; அவர் உனக்குப் பதிலளிப்பார்; நீ கூக்குரல் இடுவாய்; அவர் ‘இதோ! நான்’ என மறுமொழி தருவார்.

At that time: The disciples of John came to Jesus, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

A Reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah 58:1-9 

Thus says the Lord God: “Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God. ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord? “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rearguard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’

பின்பு அவர் அனைவரையும் நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “என்னைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து தம் சிலுவையை நாள்தோறும் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றட்டும். ஏனெனில், தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்துவிடுவார். என்பொருட்டுத் தம் உயிரை இழக்கும் எவரும் அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வார். ஒருவர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் தமதாக்கிக்கொண்டாலும் வாழ்வையே இழப்பாரெனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன?”
