இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “தூய்மையானது எதையும் நாய்களுக்குக் கொடுக்க வேண்டாம். அவை திருப்பி உங்களைக் கடித்துக் குதறும். மேலும் உங்கள் முத்துக்களைப் பன்றிகள் முன் எறிய வேண்டாம்; எறிந்தால் அவை தங்கள் கால்களால் அவற்றை மிதித்துவிடும்.

ஆகையால் பிறர் உங்களுக்குச் செய்யவேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறவற்றை எல்லாம் நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள். இறைவாக்குகளும் திருச்சட்டமும் கூறுவது இதுவே.

இடுக்கமான வாயிலின் வழியே நுழையுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் அழிவுக்குச் செல்லும் வாயில் அகன்றது; வழியும் விரிவானது; அதன் வழியே செல்வோர் பலர். வாழ்வுக்குச் செல்லும் வாயில் மிகவும் இடுக்கமானது; வழியும் மிகக் குறுகலானது; இதைக் கண்டுபிடிப்போர் சிலரே.”

அசீரிய மன்னன், எத்தியோப்பிய மன்னனான திராக்கா தனக்கு எதிராய்ப் படை திரட்டிக்கொண்டு வருவதாகக் கேள்வியுற்று, எசேக்கி யாவிடம் மீண்டும் தூதரை அனுப்பி, “யூதா அரசன் எசேக்கியாவிடம் நீங்கள் இவ்வாறு கூறுங்கள்: ‘எருசலேம் அசீரிய மன்னனின் கையில் ஒப்புவிக்கப்பட மாட்டாது’ என்று கூறும் உன் கடவுளை நம்பி ஏமாந்து விடாதே. இதோ! அசீரிய மன்னர்கள் எல்லா நாடுகளுக்கும் செய்திருப்பதையும், அவற்றை முற்றிலும் அழித்ததையும் நீ கேள்விப்பட்டிருப்பாய். அப்படியிருக்க நீ மட்டும் தப்பிவிட முடியுமா?"

எசேக்கியா தூதரின் கையிலிருந்த மடலை வாங்கி வாசித்தபின் கோவிலினுள் சென்று ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் மடலை விரித்து வைத்தார். மேலும் எசேக்கியா ஆண்டவரை மன்றாடிக் கூறியது: “ கெருபுகள் மேல் வீற்றிருக்கும் இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளான ஆண்டவரே! இவ்வுலகத்து அரசுகளுக்கெல்லாம் நீர் ஒருவரே கடவுள்! விண்ணையும் மண்ணையும் படைத்தவர் நீரே! ஆண்டவரே! நீர் செவிசாய்த்துக் கேட்டருளும். ஆண்டவரே! உம் விழிகளைத் திறந்து என்னை நோக்கியருளும். தூதனுப்பி என்றுமுள கடவுளைப் பழித்துரைக்கும் சனகெரிபின் சொற்களைக் கேட்பீராக! ஆண்டவரே! அசீரிய மன்னர்கள் வேற்றினத்தாரையும், அவர்கள் நாடுகளையும் அழித்தது உண்மைதான்! அவர்கள் வேற்றினத்தாரின் தெய்வச் சிலைகளை நெருப்பிலிட்டு எரித்தனர். ஏனெனில் அவை உண்மைக் கடவுளல்ல; மரத்தாலும் கல்லாலும் மனிதன் செய்தவையே; எனவே அவற்றை அழிக்க முடிந்தது. எங்கள் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரே! இப்பொழுது இவன் கையிலிருந்து எங்களைக் காத்தருளும். இதன் மூலம், நீர் ஒருவரே கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் என்பதை உலகின் எல்லா அரசுகளும் அறிந்துகொள்ளும்.”

அப்பொழுது ஆமோட்சின் மகன் எசாயா எசேக்கியாவிடம் ஆளனுப்பிச் சொன்னது: “இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: அசீரிய மன்னன் சனகெரிபைப் பற்றிய உன் வேண்டுதலைக் கேட்டேன். அவனுக்கு எதிராக ஆண்டவர் கூறிய வார்த்தை இதுவே: கன்னிமகள் சீயோன் உன்னை இகழ்கிறாள்; உன்னைப் பார்த்து நகைக்கிறாள்; மகள் எருசலேம் பின் நின்று தலையசைக்கிறாள். ஏனெனில் எஞ்சியோர் எருசலேமிலிருந்து வெளியேறுவர். உயிர் பிழைத்தோர் சீயோன் மலையினின்று புறப்படுவர். படைகளின் ஆண்டவரது ஆர்வமே இதை நிறைவேற்றும்!

ஆதலால் ஆண்டவர் அசீரிய மன்னனைக் குறித்து இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்: இந்நகருக்குள் அவன் நுழைய மாட்டான்; அதில் அம்பு எய்ய மாட்டான்; அதை எதிர்த்துக் கேடயத்துடன் வரமாட்டான். அதற்கு எதிராக முற்றுகைத் தளம் எழுப்ப மாட்டான். அவன் வந்த வழியே திரும்பிப் போவான்; இந்நகருக்குள் நுழையவே மாட்டான் என்கிறார் ஆண்டவர். இந்நகரை நான் பாதுகாப்பேன்; என்பொருட்டும் என் ஊழியன் தாவீதின் பொருட்டும் நான் அதை விடுவிப்பேன்.”

அன்றிரவு ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று அசீரியரின் பாளையத்தில் இலட்சத்து எண்பத்தையாயிரம் பேரைக் கொன்றார். மக்கள் காலையில் எழுந்தபோது அங்கு அனைவரும் செத்துப் பிணமாய்க் கிடந்ததைக் கண்டனர். எனவே அசீரிய மன்னன் சனகெரிபு திரும்பிச் சென்று நினிவேயில் தங்கியிருந்தான்.

In those days: Sennacherib king of Assyria sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. In those days: Shalmaneser, the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to Samaria, and for three years he besieged it. In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practised. Yet the Lord warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.” But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God. They despised his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.

அந்நாள்களில்

அசீரியா மன்னன், நாடு முழுவதன் மேலும் படையெடுத்து, சமாரியாவுக்கு வந்து, அதை மூன்றாண்டு அளவு முற்றுகையிட்டான். ஓசேயா ஆட்சியேற்ற ஒன்பதாம் ஆண்டில், அசீரியா மன்னன் சமாரியாவைக் கைப்பற்றி, இஸ்ரயேலரை அசீரியாவுக்கு நாடு கடத்தினான். அவர்களை அலகிலும், கோசானின் ஆபோர் நதிக் கரையிலும், மேதியர் நகர்களிலும் குடியேற்றினான்.

ஏனெனில், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் தங்களை எகிப்து நாட்டினின்றும் அந்நாட்டு மன்னன் பார்வோனின் கையினின்றும் விடுவித்திருந்த தங்கள் கடவுளான ஆண்டவருக்கு எதிராய்ப் பாவம் செய்து வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களைத் தொழுது வந்தனர். மேலும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் முன்னிலையிலிருந்து ஆண்டவர் விரட்டியடித்த வேற்றினத்தாரின் விதிமுறைகளின்படியும், இஸ்ரயேல் அரசர்கள் புகுத்திய வழக்கங்களின் படியும் நடந்து வந்தனர்.

ஆயினும் ஆண்டவர் எல்லா இறைவாக்கினர், திருக்காட்சியாளர் மூலம் இஸ்ரயேலுக்கும் யூதாவுக்கும் விடுத்திருந்த எச்சரிக்கை இதுவே: “உங்கள் தீய வழிகளை விட்டுத் திரும்புங்கள். உங்கள் மூதாதையருக்கு நான் கட்டளையிட்டு என் அடியார்களாகிய இறைவாக்கினர் மூலம் நான் அறிவித்த திருச்சட்டத்தின்படி என் கட்டளைகளையும் நியமங்களையும் கடைப்பிடியுங்கள்.” ஆனால் அவர்களோ செவிகொடுக்கவில்லை. அவர்கள் மூதாதையர் தங்கள் ஆண்டவர் மீது நம்பிக்கை இழந்து பணிய மறுத்தது போல, அவர்களும் வணங்காக் கழுத்தர்களாக இருந்தனர்; ஆண்டவரின் நியமங்களையும், தங்கள் மூதாதையரோடு அவர் செய்திருந்த உடன்படிக்கையையும், தங்களுக்கு அவர் விடுத்திருந்த எச்சரிக்கைகளையும் புறக்கணித்து, வீணானவற்றைப் பின்பற்றி வீணர் ஆயினர்; ‘வேற்றினத் தாரைப் பின்பற்றலாகாது’ என்று ஆண்டவர் இட்ட கட்டளைக்கு மாறாக, தங்களைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்த அவர்களைப் பின்பற்றி நடந்தனர்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது:“உடலை மட்டும் கொல்பவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சவேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் வெளிப்படாதவாறு மூடப்பட்டிருப்பது ஒன்றும் இல்லை; அறிய முடியாதவாறு மறைந்திருப்பதும் ஒன்றும் இல்லை. நான் உங்களுக்கு இருளில் சொல்வதை நீங்கள் ஒளியில் கூறுங்கள். காதோடு காதாய்க் கேட்பதை வீட்டின் மேல் தளத்திலிருந்து அறிவியுங்கள்.

ஆன்மாவைக் கொல்ல இயலாமல், உடலை மட்டும் கொல்பவர்களுக்கு அஞ்ச வேண்டாம். ஆன்மாவையும் உடலையும் நரகத்தில் அழிக்க வல்லவருக்கே அஞ்சுங்கள். காசுக்கு இரண்டு சிட்டுக் குருவிகள் விற்பது இல்லையா? எனினும் அவற்றுள் ஒன்றுகூட உங்கள் தந்தையின் விருப்பமின்றித் தரையில் விழாது. உங்கள் தலைமுடி எல்லாம் எண்ணப்பட்டிருக்கின்றது. சிட்டுக் குருவிகள் பலவற்றைவிட நீங்கள் மேலானவர்கள். எனவே அஞ்சாதிருங்கள்.

மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்னை ஏற்றுக் கொள்பவரை விண்ணுலகில் இருக்கும் என் தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் நானும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வேன். மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்னை மறுதலிப்பவர் எவரையும் விண்ணுலகில் இருக்கிற என் தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் நானும் மறுதலிப்பேன்.”

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஒரே ஒரு மனிதன் வழியாய்ப் பாவம் இந்த உலகத்தில் நுழைந்தது; அந்தப் பாவத்தின் வழியாய்ச் சாவு வந்தது. அதுபோலவே, எல்லா மனிதரும் பாவம் செய்ததால், எல்லா மனிதரையும் சாவு கவ்விக்கொண்டது.

ஆனால், குற்றத்தின் தன்மை வேறு, அருள் கொடையின் தன்மை வேறு. எவ்வாறெனில், ஒருவர் செய்த குற்றத்தால் பலரும் இறந்தனர். ஆனால் கடவுளின் அருளும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து என்னும் ஒரே மனிதரின் வழியாய் வரும் அருள்கொடையும் பலருக்கும் மிகுதியாய்க் கிடைத்தது.

எரேமியா கூறியது:

Brethren: Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. You cannot serve God and money.” Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? After the death of Jehoiada the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king. Then the king listened to them. And they abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols. And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs. Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord. These testified against them, but they would not pay attention. Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’” But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord. Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, had shown him, but killed his son. And when he was dying, he said, “May the Lord see and avenge!” At the end of the year the army of the Syrians came up against Joash. They came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus. Though the army of the Syrians had come with few men, the Lord delivered into their hand a very great army, because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers. Thus they executed judgment on Joash. இயேசு தம் சீடருக்குக் கூறியது: “எவரும் இரு தலைவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்ய முடியாது. ஏனெனில், ஒருவரை வெறுத்து மற்றவரிடம் அவர் அன்பு கொள்வார்; அல்லது ஒருவரைச் சார்ந்துகொண்டு மற்றவரைப் புறக்கணிப்பார். நீங்கள் கடவுளுக்கும் செல்வத்துக்கும் பணிவிடை செய்ய முடியாது.

ஆகவே நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: உயிர் வாழ எதை உண்பது, எதைக் குடிப்பது என்றோ, உடலுக்கு எதை உடுத்துவது என்றோ நீங்கள் கவலை கொள்ளாதீர்கள். உணவைவிட உயிரும் உடையைவிட உடலும் உயர்ந்தவை அல்லவா? வானத்துப் பறவைகளை நோக்குங்கள்; அவை விதைப்பதும் இல்லை; அறுப்பதும் இல்லை; களஞ்சியத்தில் சேர்த்து வைப்பதும் இல்லை. உங்கள் விண்ணகத் தந்தை அவற்றுக்கும் உணவு அளிக்கிறார். அவற்றைவிட நீங்கள் மேலானவர்கள் அல்லவா! கவலைப்படுவதால் உங்களில் எவர் தமது உயரத்தோடு ஒரு முழம் கூட்ட முடியும்?

உடைக்காக நீங்கள் ஏன் கவலைப்படுகிறீர்கள்? காட்டு மலர்ச் செடிகள் எப்படி வளருகின்றன எனக் கவனியுங்கள்; அவை உழைப்பதும் இல்லை, நூற்பதும் இல்லை. ஆனால் சாலமோன்கூடத் தம் மேன்மையில் எல்லாம் அவற்றில் ஒன்றைப்போலவும் அணிந்திருந்ததில்லை என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். நம்பிக்கை குன்றியவர்களே, இன்றைக்கு இருந்து நாளைக்கு அடுப்பில் எறியப்படும் காட்டுப் புல்லுக்குக் கடவுள் இவ்வாறு அணி செய்கிறார் என்றால் உங்களுக்கு இன்னும் அதிகமாய்ச் செய்ய மாட்டாரா?

ஆகவே, எதை உண்போம்? எதைக் குடிப்போம்? எதை அணிவோம்? எனக் கவலை கொள்ளாதீர்கள். ஏனெனில் பிற இனத்தவரே இவற்றை எல்லாம் நாடுவர்; உங்களுக்கு இவை யாவும் தேவை என உங்கள் விண்ணகத் தந்தைக்குத் தெரியும். ஆகவே அனைத்திற்கும் மேலாக அவரது ஆட்சியையும் அவருக்கு ஏற்புடையவற்றையும் நாடுங்கள். அப்போது இவையனைத்தும் உங்களுக்குச் சேர்த்துக் கொடுக்கப்படும்.

ஆகையால் நாளைக்காகக் கவலைப் படாதீர்கள். ஏனெனில் நாளையக் கவலையைப் போக்க நாளை வழி பிறக்கும். அந்தந்த நாளுக்கு அன்றன்றுள்ள தொல்லையே போதும்.”

யோயாதா இறந்தபின், அரசர் தம்மைப் பணிந்து நின்ற தலைவர்களின் சொற்களுக்கு இணங்கினார். அதனால் அவர்கள் தங்கள் முன்னோர்களின் கடவுளான ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தைப் புறக்கணித்து, அசேராக் கம்பங்களையும் சிலைகளையும் வழிபட்டனர். அவர்கள் செய்த இப்பாவத்தின் பொருட்டு யூதாவின் மேலும் எருசலேமின் மேலும் இறைவன் கடுங்கோபம் கொண்டார். அவர்கள் தம்மிடம் மீண்டும் வருவதற்கு ஆண்டவர் அவர்களிடம் இறைவாக்கினர்களை அனுப்பினார். அவர்களும் மக்களைக் கண்டித்தனர். ஆனால் அவர்கள் செவி கொடுக்கவில்லை.

அப்போது கடவுளின் ஆவி குரு யோயாதாவின் மகன் செக்கரியாவின் மேல் இறங்கியது; அவர் மக்கள் முன் நின்று அவர்களை நோக்கி: “இதோ, கடவுள் கூறுகிறார்: ஆண்டவரின் கட்டளைகளை மீறுவதேன்? அதனால் நீங்கள் வாழ்வில் முன்னேற மாட்டீர்களே! ஆண்டவரை நீங்கள் புறக்கணித்ததால், அவரும் உங்களைப் புறக்கணித்துள்ளார்” என்று கூறினார்.

அவர்கள் அவருக்கு எதிராகச் சதி செய்து, அரசரின் ஆணைக்கேற்ப ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்து மண்டபத்தில் அவரைக் கல்லால் எறிந்து கொன்றனர். அவர் தந்தை யோயாதா காட்டிய பேரன்பை மறந்து, அரசர் யோவாசு செக்கரியாவைக் கொல்லச் செய்தார். அவர் இறக்கும்போது, “ஆண்டவர் இதைக் கண்டு பழிவாங்குவாராக!” என்றார்.

அடுத்த ஆண்டு, சிரியாப் படையினர் அவருக்கு எதிராக வந்து, யூதாவிலும் எருசலேமிலும் புகுந்து மக்களின் எல்லாத் தலைவர்களையும் கொன்று அழித்தனர். கொள்ளைப் பொருள்கள் அனைத்தையும் தமஸ்கு மன்னனிடம் அனுப்பி வைத்தனர்.

சிரியர் மிகச் சிறு படையுடன்தான் வந்தனர்; இருப்பினும், தங்கள் முன்னோரின் கடவுளான ஆண்டவரை இஸ்ரயேலர் புறக்கணித்ததால், ஆண்டவர் அவர்களது பெரும் படையைச் சிரியரின் கையில் ஒப்புவித்தார். அவர்கள் யோவாசைத் தண்டித்தனர். கடும் காயமுற்ற நிலையில் யோவாசைச் சிரியர் விட்டுச் சென்றனர்.

அந்நாள்களில்

அகசியாவின் தாய் அத்தலியா தன் மகன் இறந்துவிட்டதைக் கண்டு கிளர்ந்தெழுந்து அரச குடும்பத்தார் அனைவரையும் கொன்றாள். அரசன் யோராமின் மகளும், அகசியாவின் சகோதரியுமான யோசேபா அகசியாவின் மகன் யோவாசைத் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு போய் ஒளித்து வைத்தாள். அவன் கொல்லப்படவிருந்த அரசிளம் புதல்வர்களில் ஒருவன். அவனையும் அவன் செவிலித் தாயையும், தனது பள்ளியறையினுள் அத்தலியாவின் பார்வையிலிருந்து யோசேபா மறைத்து வைத்தாள். எனவே அவன் உயிர் தப்பினான். அவன் ஆறு ஆண்டுகள் அவளோடு ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் தலை மறைவாய் இருந்தான். அந்நாள்களில் அத்தலியாவே நாட்டை ஆண்டு வந்தாள்.

ஏழாம் ஆண்டில், அரச மெய்க்காப்பாளர், அரண்மனைக் காவலர் ஆகியோரின் நூற்றுவர் தலைவர்களை குரு யோயாதா வரவழைத்து ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்திற்குள் கூட்டிச் சென்றார். அங்கு அவர் அவர்களோடு உடன்படிக்கை செய்து கொண்டார். அக்கோவிலில் அவர்களை ஆணையிடச் செய்து அரசனின் மகனை அவர்களுக்குக் காட்டினார். குரு யோயாதா கட்டளையிட்டுக் கூறிய அனைத்தையும் நூற்றுவர் தலைவர்கள் செய்தனர்.

ஓய்வு நாளில் விடுப்பில் செல்வோர், பணியேற்போர் ஆகிய தங்கள் வீரர்கள் அனைவரையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு குரு யோயாதாவிடம் வந்தனர். அவர் ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் இருந்த தாவீது அரசரின் ஈட்டிகளையும் கேடயங்களையும் நூற்றுவர் தலைவர்களுக்கு எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தார். காவலர், கையில் படைக்கலன் தாங்கி, திருக்கோவிலின் தென்புறம் தொடங்கி வடபுறம் வரை, பலிபீடத்தையும் திருக்கோவிலையும் அரசனையும் சூழ்ந்து நின்று கொண்டனர். பின்பு அவர் இளவரசனை வெளியே கூட்டி வந்து, அவனுக்கு முடி சூட்டி, உடன்படிக்கைச் சுருளை அளித்தார். இவ்வாறு அவன் திருப்பொழிவு பெற்று அரசனானான். அனைவரும் கைதட்டி “அரசர் நீடூழி வாழ்க!” என்று முழங்கினர்.

மக்களும், காவலரும் எழுப்பிய ஒலியை அத்தலியா கேட்டு ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் கூடியிருந்த மக்களிடம் வந்தாள். மரபுக்கேற்ப, அரசன் தூணருகில் நிற்பதையும், படைத்தலைவர்களும் எக்காளம் ஊதுபவர்களும் அவனருகில் இருப்பதையும், நாட்டின் எல்லா மக்களும் மகிழ்ச்சி கொண்டாடி எக்காளம் ஊதுவதையும் கண்டாள். உடனே அவள் தன் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்டு, “சதி! சதி!” என்று கூக்குரலிட்டாள். அப்பொழுது குரு யோயாதா படைகளுக்குப் பொறுப்பேற்றிருந்த நூற்றுவர் தலைவர்ளை நோக்கி, “படையணிகளுக்கு வெளியே அவளைக் கொண்டு செல்லுங்கள். அவளை எவனாவது பின்பற்றினால் அவனை வாளால் வெட்டி வீழ்த்துங்கள்” என்று கட்டளையிட்டார். “அவளை ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தினுள் கொல்லலாகாது” என்றும் கூறியிருந்தார். எனவே அவர்கள் அரண்மனையின் குதிரை நுழைவாயிலை அவள் அடைந்தபொழுது, அவளைப் பிடித்தனர். அங்கே அவள் கொல்லப்பட்டாள்.

பின்பு யோயாதா, ஆண்டவர் ஒரு பக்கமும், அரசன், மக்கள் மறுபக்கமுமாக அவர்களிடையே உடன்படிக்கை செய்து வைத்தார். இதன் மூலம் அரசனும் மக்களும் ஆண்டவரின் மக்களாய் இருப்பதாக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டனர். அவ்வாறே அவர் அரசனுக்கும் மக்களுக்கும் இடையே உடன்படிக்கை செய்து வைத்தார். பிறகு நாட்டிலுள்ள மக்கள் எல்லாரும் பாகாலின் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்று பலிபீடங்களையும் சிலைகளையும் தகர்த்தெறிந்தனர்; பாகாலின் அர்ச்சகன் மத்தானைப் பலிபீடங்களுக்கு முன்பாகக் கொலை செய்தனர். பிறகு குரு ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் காவலரை நிறுத்தி வைத்தார்.

நாட்டின் எல்லா மக்களும் மகிழ்ச்சி கொண்டாடினர். அத்தலியா வாளால் அரண்மனையில் கொல்லப்பட்டபின் நகரில் அமைதி நிலவியது.

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. A Reading from the Second Book of Kings 11: 1-4,9-18,20 

In those days: When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not put to death. And he remained with her for six years, hidden in the house of the Lord, while Athaliah reigned over the land. But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of the Carites and of the guards, and had them come to him in the house of the Lord. And he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the Lord, and he showed them the king’s son. The captains did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and they each brought his men who were to go off duty on the Sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. And the priest gave to the captains the spears and shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of the Lord. And the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, round the altar and the house on behalf of the king. Then he brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony. And they proclaimed him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!” When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. And when she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!” Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains who were set over the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to death with the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of the Lord.” So they laid hands on her; and she went through the horses’ entrance to the king’s house, and there she was put to death. And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also between the king and the people. Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest posted watchmen over the house of the Lord. So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword at the king’s house.

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: நீங்கள் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டும்பொழுது பிற இனத்தவரைப்போலப் பிதற்ற வேண்டாம்; மிகுதியான சொற்களை அடுக்கிக் கொண்டே போவதால் தங்கள் வேண்டுதல் கேட்கப்படும் என அவர்கள் நினைக்கிறார்கள். நீங்கள் அவர்களைப் போல் இருக்க வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் நீங்கள் கேட்கும் முன்னரே உங்கள் தேவையை உங்கள் தந்தை அறிந்திருக்கிறார்.

மற்ற மனிதர் செய்யும் குற்றங்களை நீங்கள் மன்னிப்பீர்களானால் உங்கள் விண்ணகத் தந்தையும் உங்களை மன்னிப்பார். மற்ற மனிதரை நீங்கள் மன்னிக்காவிடில் உங்கள் தந்தையும் உங்கள் குற்றங்களை மன்னிக்க மாட்டார்.”
