அக்காலத்தில்

உயிர்த்தெழுதல் இல்லை என்னும் கருத்துடைய சதுசேயர் இயேசுவை அணுகி, “போதகரே, ஒருவர் மகப்பேறின்றித் தம் மனைவியை விட்டுவிட்டு இறந்துபோனால், அவரைக் கொழுந்தனே மனைவியாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு சகோதரருக்கு வழிமரபு உருவாக்கவேண்டும் என்று மோசே நமக்கு எழுதி வைத்துள்ளார். சகோதரர் எழுவர் இருந்தனர். மூத்தவர் ஒரு பெண்ணை மணந்து மகப்பேறின்றி இறந்தார். இரண்டாமவர் அவரை மணந்து அவரும் மகப்பேறின்றி இறந்தார். மூன்றாமவருக்கும் அவ்வாறே நிகழ்ந்தது. ஏழு பேருக்கும் மகப்பேறு இல்லாமற்போயிற்று. அனைவருக்கும் கடைசியாக அப்பெண்ணும் இறந்தார். அவர்கள் உயிர்த்தெழும்போது, அவர் அவர்களுள் யாருக்கு மனைவியாக இருப்பார்? ஏனெனில் எழுவரும் அவரை மனைவியாகக் கொண்டிருந்தனரே!” என்று கேட்டனர்.

அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “உங்களுக்கு மறைநூலும் தெரியாது, கடவுளின் வல்லமையும் தெரியாது. இதனால்தான் தவறான கருத்தைக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழும்போது யாரும் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்வதில்லை. மாறாக, அவர்கள் விண்ணகத் தூதரைப்போல் இருப்பார்கள். இறந்தோர் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படுவதைப் பற்றி மோசேயின் நூலில் முட்புதர் பற்றிய நிகழ்ச்சியில் இவ்வாறு வாசித்தது இல்லையா? ‘ஆபிரகாமின் கடவுள், ஈசாக்கின் கடவுள், யாக்கோபின் கடவுள் நானே’ என்று கடவுள் அவரிடம் சொன்னாரே! அவர் இறந்தோரின் கடவுள் அல்ல; மாறாக, வாழ்வோரின் கடவுள். நீங்கள் தவறான கருத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்” என்று கூறினார்.

உம்மீது என் கைகளை விரித்ததால், உமக்குள் வந்துள்ள கடவுளின் வரத்தைப் புத்துயிர்பெறச் செய்யும்.

என் அன்பார்ந்த பிள்ளை திமொத்தேயுவுக்கு, கடவுளின் திருவுளத்தால் கிறிஸ்து இயேசு அருளும் வாழ்வு பற்றிய வாக்குறுதிக்கு ஏற்ப அவருடைய திருத்தூதனான பவுல் எழுதுவது: தந்தையாம் கடவுளிடமிருந்தும் நம் ஆண்டவராம் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவிடமிருந்தும் அருளும் இரக்கமும் அமைதியும் உரித்தாகுக! என் முன்னோரைப் போன்று தூய்மையான மனச்சான்றுடன் கடவுளுக்குப் பணியாற்றும் நான் அவருக்கு நன்றி கூறுகிறேன். இரவும் பகலும் இடைவிடாமல் என் மன்றாட்டுகளில் உன்னை நினைவுகூருகின்றேன்.

உன் மீது என் கைகளை வைத்துத் திருப்பணியில் அமர்த்தியபோது உனக்குள் எழுந்த கடவுளின் அருள்கொடையினைத் தூண்டி எழுப்புமாறு நினைவுறுத்துகிறேன். கடவுள் நமக்குக் கோழை உள்ளத்தினை அல்ல, வல்லமையும் அன்பும் கட்டுப்பாடும் கொண்ட உள்ளத்தையே வழங்கியுள்ளார். எனவே நம் ஆண்டவருக்கு நீ சான்று பகர்வதைக் குறித்தோ அவர் பொருட்டு நான் கைதியாக இருப்பதைக் குறித்தோ வெட்கமடையத் தேவை இல்லை; கடவுளின் வல்லமைக்கேற்ப நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டுத் துன்பத்தில் என்னுடன் பங்குகொள். அவர் நம் செயல்களை முன்னிட்டு அல்ல, காலங்களுக்கு முந்திய தமது தீர்மானத்தின்படி, கிறிஸ்து இயேசு வழியாக நமக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட அருளின்படி நம்மை மீட்டுள்ளார்; நமக்குத் தூய அழைப்பு விடுத்துள்ளார். நம் மீட்பராகிய கிறிஸ்து இயேசு உலகில் தோன்றியதன் மூலம் இப்போது அருள் வெளிப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவர் சாவை அழித்து, அழியா வாழ்வை நற்செய்தியின் வழியாக ஒளிரச் செய்தார். அந்த நற்செய்தியை அறிவிப்பவனாகவும் திருத்தூதனாகவும் போதகனாகவும் நான் ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளேன். இதன் பொருட்டே நான் இவ்வாறு துன்புற்று வருகிறேன்; எனினும் வெட்கமுறுவதில்லை. ஏனெனில், நான் யாரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டுள்ளேன் என அறிவேன். அவர் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்ததை இறுதிநாள்வரை காத்திட வல்லவர் என்கிற உறுதியான நம்பிக்கை எனக்கு உண்டு.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 12:18-27 

At that time: Sadducees came to Jesus, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”

God's gift is the Spirit of power, love and self-control

A Reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to Timothy 1:1-3,6-12

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.
