இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “இப்போது என்னை அனுப்பியவரிடம் போகிறேன்; ஆனால் உங்களுள் எவரும் ‘நீர் எங்கே போகிறீர்?’ என்று என்னிடம் கேட்காமலேயே நான் சொன்னவற்றைக் குறித்துத் துயரத்தில் மூழ்கியுள்ளீர்கள். நான் உங்களிடம் சொல்வது உண்மையே. நான் போவதால் நீங்கள் பயனடைவீர்கள். நான் போகாவிட்டால் துணையாளர் உங்களிடம் வரமாட்டார். நான் போனால் அவரை உங்களிடம் அனுப்புவேன்.

அவர் வந்து பாவம், நீதி, தீர்ப்பு ஆகியவை பற்றி உலகினர் கொண்டுள்ள கருத்துகள் தவறானவை என எடுத்துக்காட்டுவார். பாவம் பற்றிய அவர்கள் கருத்து தவறானது; ஏனெனில் என்னிடம் அவர்கள் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளவில்லை. நீதி பற்றிய அவர்கள் கருத்து தவறானது; ஏனெனில் நான் தந்தையிடம் செல்கிறேன்; நீங்களும் இனி என்னைக் காணமாட்டீர்கள். தீர்ப்பு பற்றிய அவர்கள் கருத்து தவறானது; ஏனெனில் இவ்வுலகின் தலைவன் தண்டனை பெற்றுவிட்டான்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

பிலிப்பி நகர் மக்கள் திரண்டெழுந்து, பவுலையும் சீலாவையும் தாக்கினார்கள். நடுவர்கள் அவர்களுடைய மேலுடைகளைக் கிழித்து அவர்களைத் தடியால் அடிக்க ஆணையிட்டார்கள். அவர்களை நன்கு அடித்துச் சிறையில் தள்ளிக் கருத்தாய்க் காவல் செய்யுமாறு சிறைக் காவலர் ஒருவருக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டார்கள். இவ்வாறு கட்டளை பெற்ற அவர் அவர்களை உட்சிறையில் தள்ளி, அவர்கள் கால்களைத் தொழுமரத்தில் உறுதியாய் மாட்டிவைத்தார்.

நள்ளிரவில் பவுலும் சீலாவும் கடவுளுக்குப் புகழ்ப்பா பாடி இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினர். மற்றக் கைதிகளோ இதனைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். திடீரென ஒரு பெரிய நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. சிறைக் கூடத்தின் அடித்தளமே அதிர்ந்தது. உடனே கதவுகள் அனைத்தும் திறந்தன. அனைவரின் விலங்குகளும் கழன்று விழுந்தன. சிறைக் காவலர் விழித்தெழுந்து, சிறைக் கூடத்தின் கதவுகள் திறந்திருப்பதைக் கண்டு, கைதிகள் தப்பி ஓடியிருப்பார்கள் என எண்ணி, வாளை உருவித் தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ள முயன்றார். பவுல் உரத்த குரலில் அவரைக் கூப்பிட்டு, “நீர் உமக்குத் தீங்கு எதுவும் செய்துகொள்ளாதீர்; நாங்கள் அனைவரும் இங்கேதான் இருக்கிறோம்” என்றார்.

சிறைக் காவலர் உடனே ஒரு விளக்கைக் கொண்டுவரச் சொல்லி, விரைந்தோடி வந்து, நடுங்கியவாறே பவுல், சீலா ஆகியோரின் காலில் விழுந்தார். அவர்களை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்து, “பெரியோரே, மீட்படைய நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசுவின் மேல் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளும்; அப்பொழுது நீரும் உம் வீட்டாரும் மீட்படைவீர்கள்” என்றார்கள்.

பின்பு அவர்கள் ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தையை அவருக்கும் அவர் வீட்டில் இருந்தோர் அனைவருக்கும் அறிவித்தார்கள். அவ்விரவு நேரத்திலேயே அவர் அவர்களைக் கூட்டிச் சென்று அவர்களின் காயங்களைக் கழுவினார். பின்பு அவரும் அவரைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களும் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்றார்கள். அவர் அவர்களைத் தம் வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று உணவு பரிமாறினார். கடவுள்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டதால் தம் வீட்டார் அனைவரோடும் சேர்ந்து அவர் பேருவகை அடைந்தார்.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 16:22–34

In those days: The crowd of Philippians joined in attacking Paul and Silas, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house, and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
