How happy are the poor in spirit.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 5: 1-12 

At that time: Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

A Reading from the First Book of Kings 17: 1-6.

In those days: Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” And the word of the Lord came to him: “Depart from here and turn eastwards and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்தைக் கண்டு மலைமீது ஏறி அமர, அவருடைய சீடர் அவரருகே வந்தனர். அவர் திருவாய் மலர்ந்து கற்பித்தவை: “ஏழையரின் உள்ளத்தோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் விண்ணரசு அவர்களுக்கு உரியது. துயருறுவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் ஆறுதல் பெறுவர். கனிவுடையோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நாட்டை உரிமைச் சொத்தாக்கிக் கொள்வர். நீதி நிலைநாட்டும் வேட்கை கொண்டோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நிறைவு பெறுவர். இரக்கமுடையோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் இரக்கம் பெறுவர். தூய்மையான உள்ளத்தோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் கடவுளைக் காண்பர். அமைதி ஏற்படுத்துவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் கடவுளின் மக்கள் என அழைக்கப்படுவர். நீதியின் பொருட்டுத் துன்புறுத்தப்படுவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் விண்ணரசு அவர்களுக்கு உரியது. என் பொருட்டு மக்கள் உங்களை இகழ்ந்து, துன்புறுத்தி, உங்களைப் பற்றி இல்லாதவை பொல்லாதவையெல்லாம் சொல்லும்போது நீங்கள் பேறு பெற்றவர்களே! மகிழ்ந்து பேருவகை கொள்ளுங்கள்! ஏனெனில் விண்ணுலகில் உங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கும் கைம்மாறு மிகுதியாகும். இவ்வாறே உங்களுக்கு முன்னிருந்த இறைவாக்கினர்களையும் அவர்கள் துன்புறுத்தினார்கள்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

கிலயாதில் குடியிருந்த திஸ்பே ஊரைச் சார்ந்த எலியா ஆகாபு அரசனிடம், “நான் பணியும் இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளான வாழும் ஆண்டவர் மேல் ஆணை! என் வாக்கினாலன்றி, வரும் ஆண்டுகளில் பனியோ மழையோ பெய்யாது” என்றார்.

பின்னர் ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு எலியாவுக்கு வந்தது: “இங்கிருந்து ஓடிவிடு; கிழக்கு முகமாகப் போய் யோர்தானுக்கு அப்பாலுள்ள கெரீத்து ஓடையருகில் ஒளிந்து கொள். அந்த ஓடையில் தண்ணீர் குடித்துக்கொள். அங்கே உனக்கு உணவளிக்குமாறு காகங்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டிருக்கிறேன்”. அவ்வாறே அவர் போய் ஆண்டவரது வாக்கின்படி செய்தார். அவர் சென்று யோர்தானுக்கு அப்பாலிருந்த கெரீத்து ஓடையருகில் தங்கியிருந்தார். காகங்கள் காலையிலும் மாலையிலும் அப்பமும் இறைச்சியும் அவருக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தன. ஓடையில் தண்ணீர் குடித்துக் கொண்டார்.
