The beheading of John the Baptist

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 14: 1-12

At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.

In those days: The priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.” Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. Now therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the Lord your God, and the Lord will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.” Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.” But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah so that he was not given over to the people to be put to death.

குறுநில மன்னன் ஏரோது, இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய செய்தியைக் கேள்வியுற்றான். அவன் தன் ஊழியரிடம், “இவர் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான்தான். இறந்த யோவானைக் கடவுள் உயிர்பெற்றெழச் செய்தார். இதனால்தான் இந்த வல்ல செயல்களை இவர் செய்கிறார்” என்று கூறினான்.

ஏரோது தன் சகோதரனான பிலிப்பின் மனைவியாகிய ஏரோதியாவின் பொருட்டு யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான். ஏனெனில் யோவான் அவனிடம், “நீர் அவளை வைத்திருப்பது முறையல்ல” என்று சொல்லி வந்தார். ஏரோது அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பினான்; ஆயினும் மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினர் அவரை ஓர் இறைவாக்கினர் எனக் கருதியதால் அவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சினான்.

ஏரோதின் பிறந்த நாளில் ஏரோதியாளின் மகள் அவையினர் நடுவில் நடனம் ஆடி ஏரோதை அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். அதனால் அவள் எதைக் கேட்டாலும் அளிப்பதாக அவன் ஒரு வாக்குறுதியை ஆணையிட்டு அறிவித்தான். அவள் தன் தாய் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தபடியே, “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இங்கேயே எனக்குக் கொடும்” என்று கேட்டாள். இதைக் கேட்ட அரசன் வருந்தினான்; ஆனாலும் தான் விருந்தினர்முன் ஆணையிட்டதால் அதை அவளுக்குக் கொடுக்கக் கட்டளையிட்டான்; ஆள் அனுப்பிச் சிறையில் இருந்த யோவானின் தலையை வெட்டச் செய்தான்; அவருடைய தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு வரச் செய்து அதைச் சிறுமியிடம் கொடுத்தான். அவளும் அதைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொண்டு சென்றாள்.

யோவானுடைய சீடர் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று அடக்கம் செய்தனர்; பின்னர் இந்நிகழ்ச்சியினை இயேசுவிடம் போய் அறிவித்தனர்.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “தம் சொந்த ஊரிலும் வீட்டிலும் தவிர மற்றெங்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் மதிப்புப் பெறுவர்” என்றார். அவர்களுக்கு நம்பிக்கை இல்லாததால் அவர் அங்குப் பல வல்ல செயல்களைச் செய்யவில்லை.

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: “Thus says the Lord: Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word. It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds. You shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened, then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.’” The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! At that time: Jesus said to the crowds, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there.

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 18: 1-6

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord. “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Then the word of the Lord came to me: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.”

இயேசு மக்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “விண்ணரசு கடலில் வீசப்பட்டு எல்லா வகையான மீன்களையும் வாரிக்கொண்டுவரும் வலைக்கு ஒப்பாகும். வலை நிறைந்ததும் அதை இழுத்துக்கொண்டு போய்க் கரையில் உட்கார்ந்து நல்லவற்றைக் கூடைகளில் சேர்த்து வைப்பர்; கெட்டவற்றை வெளியே எறிவர். இவ்வாறே உலக முடிவிலும் நிகழும். வானதூதர் சென்று நேர்மையாளரிடையேயிருந்து தீயோரைப் பிரிப்பர்; பின் அவர்களைத் தீச்சூளையில் தள்ளுவர். அங்கே அழுகையும் அங்கலாய்ப்பும் இருக்கும்."

“இவற்றையெல்லாம் புரிந்துகொண்டீர்களா?” என்று இயேசு கேட்க, அவர்கள், “ஆம்” என்றார்கள். பின்பு அவர், “ஆகையால் விண்ணரசு பற்றிக் கற்றுக்கொண்ட எல்லா மறைநூல் அறிஞரும் தம் கருவூலத்திலிருந்து புதியவற்றையும் பழையவற்றையும் வெளிக்கொணரும் வீட்டு உரிமையாளரைப் போல் இருக்கின்றனர்” என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார்.

இவ்வுவமைகளை இயேசு சொல்லி முடித்த பின்பு அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுச் சென்றார்.

எரேமியாவுக்கு ஆண்டவர் அருளிய வாக்கு: “நீ எழுந்து குயவன் வீட்டுக்குப் போ. அங்கு என் சொற்களை நீ கேட்கச் செய்வேன்."

எனவே நான் குயவர் வீட்டுக்குப் போனேன். அங்கு அவர் சுழல் வட்டை கொண்டு வேலை செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார். குயவர் தம் கையால் செய்த மண் கலம் சரியாக அமையாதபோதெல்லாம், அவர் அதைத் தம் விருப்பப்படி வேறொரு கலமாக வடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அக்காலத்தில்

சகோதரர் இறந்ததால் மார்த்தா, மரியா இவர்களுக்கு ஆறுதல் சொல்லப் பலர் அங்கே வந்திருந்தனர். இயேசு வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்று கேள்விப்பட்டதும் மார்த்தா அவரை எதிர்கொண்டு சென்றார்; மரியா வீட்டில் இருந்துவிட்டார்.

மார்த்தா இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “ஆண்டவரே, நீர் இங்கே இருந்திருந்தால் என் சகோதரன் இறந்திருக்க மாட்டான். இப்போது கூட நீர் கடவுளிடம் கேட்பதை எல்லாம் அவர் உமக்குக் கொடுப்பார் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரிடம், “உன் சகோதரன் உயிர்த்தெழுவான்” என்றார்.

மார்த்தா அவரிடம், “இறுதி நாள் உயிர்த்தெழுதலின்போது அவனும் உயிர்த்தெழுவான் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரிடம், “உயிர்த்தெழுதலும் வாழ்வும் நானே. என்னிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவர் இறப்பினும் வாழ்வார். உயிரோடு இருக்கும்போது என்னிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளும் எவரும் என்றுமே சாக மாட்டார். இதை நீ நம்புகிறாயா?” என்று கேட்டார்.

மார்த்தா அவரிடம், “ஆம் ஆண்டவரே, நீரே மெசியா! நீரே இறைமகன்! நீரே உலகிற்கு வரவிருந்தவர் என நம்புகிறேன்” என்றார்.

இயேசு ஓர் ஊரை அடைந்தார். அங்கே பெண் ஒருவர் அவரைத் தம் வீட்டில் வரவேற்றார். அவர் பெயர் மார்த்தா. அவருக்கு மரியா என்னும் சகோதரி ஒருவர் இருந்தார். மரியா ஆண்டவருடைய காலடி அருகில் அமர்ந்து அவர் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.

ஆனால் மார்த்தா பற்பல பணிகள் புரிவதில் பரபரப்பாகி இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, நான் பணிவிடை செய்ய என் சகோதரி என்னைத் தனியே விட்டுவிட்டாளே, உமக்குக் கவலையில்லையா? எனக்கு உதவி புரியும்படி அவளிடம் சொல்லும்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “மார்த்தா, மார்த்தா! நீ பலவற்றைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்பட்டுக் கலங்குகிறாய். ஆனால் தேவையானது ஒன்றே. மரியாவோ நல்ல பங்கைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துக் கொண்டாள்; அது அவளிடமிருந்து எடுக்கப்படாது” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 13: 44-46

At that time: Jesus said to the crowds, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
