The Canaanite woman debates with Jesus and saves her daughter

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 15: 21-28 

At that time: Jesus went away and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock. 

R.: The Lord will keep us, as a shepherd keeps his flock.

For the Lord has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Sion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord.

Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.

You shall be rebuilt, virgin of Israel

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 31:1-7 

At that time, declares the Lord, “I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.” Thus says the Lord: “The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant and shall enjoy the fruit. For there shall be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim: ‘Arise, and let us go up to Sion, to the Lord our God.’” For thus says the Lord: “Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, ‘O Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தீர், சீதோன் ஆகிய பகுதிகளை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். அவற்றின் எல்லைப் பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்துவந்த கானானியப் பெண் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் வந்து, “ஐயா, தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்; என் மகள் பேய் பிடித்துக் கொடுமைக்குள்ளாகி இருக்கிறாள்” எனக் கதறினார். ஆனால் இயேசு அவரிடம் ஒரு வார்த்தைகூட மறுமொழியாகச் சொல்லவில்லை.

சீடர்கள் அவரை அணுகி, “நமக்குப் பின்னால் கத்திக்கொண்டு வருகிறாரே, இவரை அனுப்பிவிடும்” என வேண்டினர். அவரோ மறுமொழியாக, “இஸ்ரயேல் குலத்தாருள் காணாமற்போன ஆடுகளாய் இருப்போரிடமே நான் அனுப்பப்பட்டேன்” என்றார்.

ஆனால் அப்பெண் அவர்முன் வந்து பணிந்து, “ஐயா, எனக்கு உதவியருளும்” என்றார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய உணவை எடுத்து நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்குப் போடுவது முறையல்ல” என்றார். உடனே அப்பெண், “ஆம் ஐயா, ஆனாலும் தங்கள் உரிமையாளரின் மேசையிலிருந்து விழும் சிறு துண்டுகளை நாய்க்குட்டிகள் தின்னுமே” என்றார்.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “அம்மா, உமது நம்பிக்கை பெரிது. நீர் விரும்பியவாறே உமக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார். அந்நேரம் அவர் மகளின் பிணி நீங்கியது.

ஆண்டவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்: “அக்காலத்தில் இஸ்ரயேலின் குடும்பங்கள் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் நான் கடவுளாய் இருப்பேன்; அவர்கள் என் மக்களாய் இருப்பார்கள்."

ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: “வாளுக்குத் தப்பிப் பிழைத்த மக்கள் பாலைநிலத்தில் என் அருளைக் கண்டடைந்தனர்; இஸ்ரயேலர் இளைப்பாற விரும்பினர். ஆண்டவர் அவர்களுக்குத் தொலையிலிருந்து தோன்றினார். உனக்கு நான் முடிவில்லாத அன்பு காட்டியுள்ளேன்; எனவே பேரன்பால் உன்னை ஈர்த்துள்ளேன். கன்னிப் பெண்ணாகிய இஸ்ரயேலே! உன்னை நான் மீண்டும் கட்டி எழுப்புவேன்; நீயும் கட்டி எழுப்பப்படுவாய்; மீண்டும் உன் மேளதாளங்களை நீ எடுத்துக் கொள்வாய்; மகிழ்ச்சியுற்றோர் போல நடனம் ஆடிக்கொண்டு நீ வெளியேறுவாய்; சமாரியாவின் மலைகள்மேல் திராட்சைத் தோட்டங்களை நீ மீண்டும் அமைப்பாய்; தோட்டக்காரர் பயிரிட்டு விளைச்சலை உண்டு மகிழ்வர். ஏனெனில் ஒரு நாள் வரும்; அப்பொழுது எப்ராயிம் மலையில், ‘எழுந்திருங்கள்; நாம் சீயோனுக்குப் போவோம்; நம் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரிடம் செல்வோம்’ என்று காவலர்அழைப்பு விடுப்பர்."

ஆண்டவர் தொடர்ந்து கூறுகிறார்: “யாக்கோபை முன்னிட்டு மகிழ்ந்து பாடுங்கள்; மக்களினத் தலைவனைக் குறித்து ஆர்ப்பரியுங்கள்; முழக்கம் செய்யுங்கள், புகழ்பாடுங்கள்; ‘ஆண்டவர் இஸ்ரயேலில் எஞ்சியோராகிய தம் மக்களை மீட்டருளினார்! ‘ என்று பறைசாற்றுங்கள்.”
