A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 14: 13-21

At that time: When Jesus heard [of the death of John the Baptist], he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Brethren: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 55: 1-3.

Thus says the Lord: “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு புறப்பட்டுப் படகிலேறிப் பாலை நிலத்திலுள்ள தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் சென்றார். இதைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட திரளான மக்கள் ஊர்களிலிருந்து கால்நடையாக அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தனர். இயேசு அங்குச் சென்றபோது பெருந்திரளான மக்களைக் கண்டு அவர்கள்மீது பரிவு கொண்டார்; அவர்களிடையே உடல் நலமற்றிருந்தோரைக் குணமாக்கினார்.

மாலையானபோது, சீடர் அவரிடம் வந்து, “இவ்விடம் பாலைநிலம் ஆயிற்றே, நேரமும் ஆகிவிட்டது. ஊர்களுக்குச் சென்று தங்களுக்குத் தேவையான உணவு வாங்கிக்கொள்ள மக்கள் கூட்டத்தை அனுப்பிவிடும்” என்றனர். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “அவர்கள் செல்ல வேண்டியதில்லை; நீங்களே அவர்களுக்கு உணவு கொடுங்கள்” என்றார்.

ஆனால் அவர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “எங்களிடம் இங்கே ஐந்து அப்பங்களும் இரண்டு மீன்களும் தவிர வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை” என்றார்கள். அவர், “அவற்றை என்னிடம் இங்கே கொண்டு வாருங்கள்” என்றார்.

மக்களைப் புல் தரையில் அமருமாறு ஆணையிட்டார். அவர் அந்த ஐந்து அப்பங்களையும் இரண்டு மீன்களையும் எடுத்து, வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்த்து, கடவுளைப் போற்றி, அப்பங்களைப் பிட்டுச் சீடர்களிடம் கொடுத்தார். சீடர்களும் மக்களுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்கள்; அனைவரும் வயிறார உண்டனர். எஞ்சிய துண்டுகளைப் பன்னிரண்டு கூடைகள் நிறைய எடுத்தனர். பெண்களும் சிறு பிள்ளைகளும் நீங்கலாக உணவு உண்ட ஆண்களின் தொகை ஏறத்தாழ ஐயாயிரம்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கிறிஸ்துவின் அன்பிலிருந்து நம்மைப் பிரிக்கக் கூடியது எது? வேதனையா? நெருக்கடியா? இன்னலா? பட்டினியா? ஆடையின்மையா? இடரா? சாவா? எதுதான் நம்மைப் பிரிக்க முடியும்?

ஆயினும், நம்மேல் அன்பு கூர்ந்தவரின் செயலால் மேற்கூறியவை அனைத்திலும் நாம் வெற்றிமேல் வெற்றி அடைகிறோம். ஏனெனில் சாவோ, வாழ்வோ, வானதூதரோ, ஆட்சியாளரோ, நிகழ்வனவோ, வருவனவோ, வலிமை மிக்கவையோ, உன்னதத்தில் உள்ளவையோ, ஆழத்தில் உள்ளவையோ, வேறெந்தப் படைப்போ நம் ஆண்டவர் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் வழியாய் அருளப்பட்ட கடவுளின் அன்பிலிருந்து நம்மைப் பிரிக்கவே முடியாது என்பது என் உறுதியான நம்பிக்கை.

இறைவன் கூறுவதாவது:

"தாகமாய் இருப்பவர்களே, நீங்கள் அனைவரும் நீர்நிலைகளுக்கு வாருங்கள்; கையில் பணமில்லாதவர்களே, நீங்களும் வாருங்கள்; தானியத்தை வாங்கி உண்ணுங்கள். வாருங்கள், காசு பணமின்றித் திராட்சை இரசமும் பாலும் வாங்குங்கள்.

உணவாக இல்லாத ஒன்றிற்காக நீங்கள் ஏன் பணத்தைச் செலவிடுகின்றீர்கள்? நிறைவு தராத ஒன்றிற்காய் ஏன் உங்கள் உழைப்பை வீணாக்குகிறீர்கள்? எனக்குக் கவனமாய்ச் செவிகொடுங்கள்; நல்லுணவை உண்ணுங்கள்; கொழுத்ததை உண்டு மகிழுங்கள்.
