I will make you into fishers of men.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 1: 14-20. 

After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’ he said ‘and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.’

  As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.’ And at once they left their nets and followed him.

  Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in their boat, mending their nets. He called them at once and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, they went after him.

Hannah's rival taunts her for being barren.

1 Samuel 1 : 1-8 

There was a man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the highlands of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives, one called Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children but Hannah had none. Every year this man used to go up from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of Hosts in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there as priests of the Lord.

  One day Elkanah offered sacrifice. He used to give portions to Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; to Hannah, however, he would give only one portion, although he loved her more, since the Lord had made her barren. Her rival would taunt her to annoy her, because the Lord had made her barren. And this went on year after year; every time they went up to the temple of the Lord she used to taunt her. And so Hannah wept and would not eat. Then Elkanah her husband said to her, ‘Hannah, why are you crying and why are you not eating? Why so sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?’

மக்கள் மீட்பரை எதிர்பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஒருவேளை யோவான் மெசியாவாக இருப்பாரோ என்று எல்லாரும் தங்களுக்குள் எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். யோவான் அவர்கள் அனைவரையும் பார்த்து, “நான் தண்ணீரால் உங்களுக்குத் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறேன்; ஆனால் என்னைவிட வலிமைமிக்க ஒருவர் வருகிறார். அவருடைய மிதியடி வாரை அவிழ்க்கக்கூட எனக்குத் தகுதியில்லை. அவர் தூய ஆவி என்னும் நெருப்பால் உங்களுக்குத் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுப்பார்.

மக்கள் எல்லாரும் திருமுழுக்குப் பெறும் வேளையில் இயேசுவும் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்று, இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது வானம் திறந்தது. தூய ஆவி புறா வடிவில் தோன்றி அவர்மீது இறங்கியது. அப்பொழுது, “என் அன்பார்ந்த மகன் நீயே, உன் பொருட்டு நான் பூரிப்படைகிறேன்” என்று வானத்திலிருந்து ஒரு குரல் ஒலித்தது.

அன்பிற்குரியவரே,

மனிதர் அனைவருக்கும் மீட்பராம் கடவுளின் அருள் வெளிப்பட்டுள்ளது. நாம் இறைப்பற்றின்மையையும் உலகு சார்ந்த தீய நாட்டங்களையும் மறுத்துக் கட்டுப்பாட்டுடனும் நேர்மையுடனும் இறைப்பற்றுடனும் இம்மையில் வாழ இவ்வருளால் பயிற்சி பெறுகிறோம். மகிழ்ச்சியோடு எதிர்நோக்கியிருப்பது நிறைவேறும் எனக் காத்திருக்கிறோம். நம் பெருமைமிக்க கடவுளும் மீட்பருமாகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் மாட்சி வெளிப்படப்போகிறது. அவர் நம்மை எல்லா நெறிகேடுகளிலிருந்தும் மீட்டு, நற்செயல்களில் ஆர்வமுள்ள தமக்குரிய மக்களாகத் தூய்மைப்படுத்தத் தம்மையே ஒப்படைத்தார்.

நம் மீட்பராம் கடவுளின் நன்மையும் மனித நேயமும் வெளிப்பட்டபோது, நாம் செய்த அறச்செயல்களை முன்னிட்டு அல்ல, மாறாகத் தம் இரக்கத்தை முன்னிட்டு, புதுப்பிறப்பு அளிக்கும் நீரினாலும் புதுப்பிக்கும் தூய ஆவியாலும் கடவுள் நம்மை மீட்டார். அவர் நம் மீட்பராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வழியாகத் தூய ஆவியை நம்மீது நிறைவாகப் பொழிந்தார். நாம் அவரது அருளால் அவருக்கு ஏற்புடையவர்களாகி, நாம் எதிர்நோக்கி இருக்கும் நிலைவாழ்வை உரிமைப்பேறாகப் பெறும்பொருட்டே இவ்வாறு செய்தார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 3: 15-16,21-22 

A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, ‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Now when all the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptism was at prayer, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.’

He saved us by means of the cleansing water of rebirth.

Titus 2: 11-14, 3:4-7 

God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God, and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the Appearing of the glory of our great God and saviour Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own and would have no ambition except to do good.

  But when the kindness and love of God our saviour for mankind were revealed, it was not because he was concerned with any righteous actions we might have done ourselves; it was for no reason except his own compassion that he saved us, by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our saviour. He did this so that we should be justified by his grace, to become heirs looking forward to inheriting eternal life.
