அந்நாள்களில்

சாலமோன் ஆண்டவரின் பலிபீடத்தை நோக்கி நின்றுகொண்டு, இஸ்ரயேல் சபையார் அனைவர் முன்னிலையில் வானத்திற்கு நேரே தம் கைகளை உயர்த்தி மன்றாடியது:

“இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரே! மேலே விண்ணிலும் கீழே மண்ணிலும் உம்மைப் போன்ற வேறு கடவுள் யாரும் இல்லை. உமது முன்னிலையில் முழு உள்ளத்தோடு உமக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து நடக்கும் உம்முடைய அடியார்க்கு உமது உடன்படிக்கையின்படி தவறாது பேரன்பு காட்டி வருகிறீர்.

கடவுள் உண்மையில் இந்த மண்ணுலகில் தங்கியிருப்பாரா? வானமும் வான மண்டலங்களும் உம்மைக் கொள்ள இயலாதிருக்க, நான் கட்டியுள்ள இக்கோவில் எப்படி உம்மைக் கொள்ளும்? என் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரே! உம் அடியான் செய்கிற வேண்டுதலையும் விண்ணப்பத்தையும் கேட்டருளும்; உம் அடியான் இன்று உம் முன்னிலையில் எழுப்பும் கூக்குரலுக்கும் செய்யும் வேண்டுதலுக்கும் செவிசாய்த்தருளும்! ‘என் பெயர் இவ்விடத்தில் விளங்கும்’ என்று இக்கோவிலைப்பற்றி நீர் சொல்லியிருக்கிறீர்! இவ்விடத்தில் உம் அடியான் செய்யும் வேண்டுதலைக் கேட்டருள்வதற்காக, இரவும் பகலும் உமது கண்கள் இதனை நோக்கி இருப்பனவாக!

உம் அடியானின் விண்ணப்பத்திற்கும் இவ்விடத்தை நோக்கிச் செய்கிற உம் மக்கள் இஸ்ரயேலர் வேண்டுதலுக்கும் செவிசாய்ப்பீராக! உமது உறைவிடமாகிய விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து கேட்டு அருள்வீராக! கேட்டு மன்னிப்பு அருள்வீராக!”

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 7: 1-13 

The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture:

This people honours me only with lip-service,

while their hearts are far from me.

The worship they offer me is worthless,

the doctrines they teach are only human regulations.

You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ And he said to them, ‘How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserve your own tradition! For Moses said: Do your duty to your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death. But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help you is Corban (that is, dedicated to God), then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.” In this way you make God’s word null and void for the sake of your tradition which you have handed down. And you do many other things like this.’

1 Kings 8: 22-23, 27-30 

In the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord and, stretching out his hands towards heaven, said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, not in heaven above nor on earth beneath is there such a God as you, true to your covenant and your kindness towards your servants when they walk wholeheartedly in your way. Yet will God really live with men on the earth? Why, the heavens and their own heavens cannot contain you. How much less this house that I have built! Listen to the prayer and entreaty of your servant, O Lord my God; listen to the cry and to the prayer your servant makes to you today. Day and night let your eyes watch over this house, over this place of which you have said, “My name shall be there.” Listen to the prayer that your servant will offer in this place.

  ‘Hear the entreaty of your servant and of Israel your people as they pray in this place. From heaven where your dwelling is, hear; and, as you hear, forgive.’

இயேசுவும் அவருடைய சீடர்களும் மறு கரைக்குச் சென்று கெனசரேத்துப் பகுதியை அடைந்து படகைக் கட்டி நிறுத்தினார்கள். அவர்கள் படகை விட்டு இறங்கிய உடனே, மக்கள் இயேசுவை இன்னார் என்று கண்டுணர்ந்து, அச்சுற்றுப்பகுதி எங்கும் ஓடிச் சென்று, அவர் இருப்பதாகக் கேள்விப்பட்ட இடங்களுக்கெல்லாம் நோயாளர்களைப் படுக்கையில் கொண்டு வரத் தொடங்கினார்கள். மேலும் அவர் சென்ற ஊர்கள், நகர்கள், பட்டிகள் அனைத்திலும் உடல் நலம் குன்றியோரைப் பொது இடங்களில் கிடத்தி, அவருடைய மேலுடையின் ஓரத்தையாவது அவர்கள் தொட அனுமதிக்குமாறு அவரை வேண்டினார்கள். அவரைத் தொட்ட அனைவரும் நலமடைந்தனர்.

சாலமோன் ஆண்டவரின் உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைத் தாவீதின் நகர் சீயோனினின்று கொண்டுவர விரும்பினார். அதற்காக அவர் இஸ்ரயேலின் பெரியோரையும் எல்லாக் குலத்தலைவர்களையும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் மூதாதையர் வீட்டுத் தலைவர்களையும் எருசலேமிற்குத் தம்மிடம் வரும்படி அழைத்தார். அதற்கிணங்க, அவர்கள் அனைவரும் ஏழாம் மாதமாகிய ‘ஏத்தானிம்’ மாதத்தின் பண்டிகையின்போது, அரசர் சாலமோன் முன் கூடினர். இஸ்ரயேலின் பெரியோர் அனைவரும் வந்தனர். குருக்கள் பேழையைத் தூக்கிக் கொண்டனர். ஆண்டவரின் பேழை, சந்திப்புக் கூடாரம், கூடாரத்தின் தூய கலன்கள் அனைத்தையும் குருக்களும் லேவியரும் சுமந்துசென்றனர்.

அரசர் சாலமோனும், அவரிடம் வந்து குழுமிய இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பினர் அனைவரும், எண்ணவோ கணக்கிடவோ முடியாத அளவு திரளான ஆடுகளையும் மாடுகளையும் பேழைக்கு முன்னால் பலியிட்டனர். பின்னர், குருக்கள் ஆண்டவரின் உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைக் கோவில் கருவறையாகிய திருத்தூயகத்தில் அதற்குரிய இடத்தில் கெருபுகளின் இறக்கைகளின் கீழே கொண்டு வந்து வைத்தனர். அக்கெருபுகள் பேழை இருக்கும் இடத்தில் தங்கள் இரண்டு இறக்கைகளையும் விரித்து, பேழையையும், அதன் தண்டுகளையும் மூடியவாறு இருந்தன. இரு கற்பலகைகளைத் தவிர வேறொன்றும் பேழைக்குள் இல்லை.

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் எகிப்து நாட்டிலிருந்து வெளியேறிய பொழுது அவர்களோடு உடன்படிக்கை செய்துகொண்ட ஓரேபு மலையில் மோசே அதற்குள் வைத்தவை அவை. குருக்கள் தூயகத்தினின்று வெளியே வருகையில் ஒரு மேகம் ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தை நிரப்பிற்று. அம்மேகத் தின் பொருட்டு குருக்கள் திருப்பணி புரிய அங்கு நிற்க இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி அவர் இல்லத்தை நிரப்பிற்று.

அப்பொழுது சாலமோன், “ஆண்டவரே! நீர் கரிய மேகத்தில் உறைவதாகக் கூறினீர். நீர் என்றென்றும் தங்கி வாழ உயர் இல்லம் ஒன்றை உமக்காக நான் கட்டியுள்ளேன்” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark 6: 53-56 

Having made the crossing, Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up. No sooner had they stepped out of the boat than people recognised him, and started hurrying all through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, to village, or town, or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched him were cured.

The Ark of the Covenant is brought into the Temple

1 Kings 8: 1-7,9-13 

Solomon called the elders of Israel together in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up from the Citadel of David, which is Zion. All the men of Israel assembled round King Solomon in the month of Ethanim, at the time of the feast (that is, the seventh month), and the priests took up the ark and the Tent of Meeting with all the sacred vessels that were in it. In the presence of the ark, King Solomon and all Israel sacrificed sheep and oxen, countless, innumerable. The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, in the Debir of the Temple, that is, in the Holy of Holies, under the cherubs’ wings. For there where the ark was placed the cherubs spread out their wings and sheltered the ark and its shafts. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt; they are still there today.

  Now when the priests came out of the sanctuary, the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord, and because of the cloud the priests could no longer perform their duties: the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s Temple.

  Then Solomon said:

‘The Lord has chosen to dwell in the thick cloud.

Yes, I have built you a dwelling,

a place for you to live in for ever.’
