உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரின் தூய மக்களினமாய் நீ இருப்பாய்.

இணைச்சட்ட நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 26: 16-19

மோசே மக்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: இந்த முறைமைகளையும் நியமங்களையும் நீ நிறைவேற்றுமாறு உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் இன்று உனக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டுள்ளார். உன் முழு இதயத்தோடும் முழு உள்ளத்தோடும் அவற்றை நிறைவேற்றுவதில் கருத்தாயிரு.

ஆண்டவரை உன் கடவுளாய் ஏற்பதாகவும், உனக்குக் கடவுளாக இருப்பார் என்றும், அவருடைய வழிகளில் நடப்பதாகவும், அவருடைய நியமங்களையும் கட்டளைகளையும் முறைமைகளையும் கடைப்பிடிப்பதாகவும், அவர் குரலுக்குச் செவிகொடுப்பதாகவும் இன்று நீ அவருக்கு வாக்களித்துள்ளாய்.

நீ அவருடைய கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பதில் கருத்தாயிருந்தால், அவர் கூறியபடியே நீ அவருக்குச் சொந்தமான மக்களினமாய் இருப்பாய் என்றும், அவர் உருவாக்கிய எல்லா மக்களினங்களிலும், புகழிலும், பெயரிலும், மாட்சியிலும் உன்னையே உயர்த்துவார் என்றும், அதனால் உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரின் தூய மக்களினமாய் நீ இருப்பாய் என்றும் ஆண்டவர் இன்று உனக்கு வாக்களித்துள்ளார்.

But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; in this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike. For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.’

Moses said to the people: ‘The Lord your God today commands you to observe these laws and customs; you must keep and observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.

  ‘You have today made this declaration about the Lord: that he will be your God, but only if you follow his ways, keep his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and listen to his voice. And the Lord has today made this declaration about you: that you will be his very own people as he promised you, but only if you keep all his commandments; then for praise and renown and honour he will set you high above all the nations he has made, and you will be a people consecrated to the Lord, as he promised.’

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: மறைநூல் அறிஞர், பரிசேயர் ஆகியோரின் நெறியைவிட உங்கள் நெறி சிறந்திருக்கட்டும். இல்லையெனில், நீங்கள் விண்ணரசுக்குள் புக முடியாது என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லுகிறேன்: “கொலை செய்யாதே; கொலை செய்கிறவர் எவரும் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவர்” என்று முற்காலத்தவர்க்குக் கூறப்பட்டிருப்பதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: தம் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளிடம் சினங்கொள்கிறவர் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவார்; தம் சகோதரரையோ சகோதரியையோ ‘முட்டாளே’ என்பவர் தலைமைச் சங்கத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவார்; ‘அறிவிலியே’ என்பவர் எரிநரகத்துக்கு ஆளாவார்.

ஆகையால் நீங்கள் உங்கள் காணிக்கையைப் பலிபீடத்தில் செலுத்த வரும்பொழுது உங்கள் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள் எவருக்கும் உங்கள் மேல் ஏதோ மனத்தாங்கல் உண்டென அங்கே நினைவுற்றால், அங்கேயே பலி பீடத்தின்முன் உங்கள் காணிக்கையை வைத்துவிட்டுப் போய் முதலில் அவரிடம் நல்லுறவு ஏற்படுத்திக்கொள்ளுங்கள். பின்பு வந்து உங்கள் காணிக்கையைச் செலுத்துங்கள்.

உங்கள் எதிரி உங்களை நீதி மன்றத்துக்குக் கூட்டிச்செல்லும்போது வழியிலேயே அவருடன் விரைவாக உடன்பாடு செய்துகொள்ளுங்கள். இல்லையேல் உங்கள் எதிரி நடுவரிடம் உங்களை ஒப்படைப்பார். நடுவர் காவலரிடம் ஒப்படைக்க, நீங்கள் சிறையில் அடைக்கப்படுவீர்கள். கடைசிக் காசு வரை திருப்பிச் செலுத்தாமல் அங்கிருந்து வெளியேற மாட்டீர்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 5:20-26 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.’

I prefer to see the wicked man renounce his wickedness and live

Ezekiel 18:21-28 

Thus says the Lord:

  ‘If the wicked man renounces all the sins he has committed, respects my laws and is law-abiding and honest, he will certainly live; he will not die. All the sins he committed will be forgotten from then on; he shall live because of the integrity he has practised. What! Am I likely to take pleasure in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – and not prefer to see him renounce his wickedness and live?

  ‘But if the upright man renounces his integrity, commits sin, copies the wicked man and practises every kind of filth, is he to live? All the integrity he has practised shall be forgotten from then on; but this is because he himself has broken faith and committed sin, and for this he shall die. But you object, “What the Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself has committed. When the sinner renounces sin to become law-abiding and honest, he deserves to live. He has chosen to renounce all his previous sins; he shall certainly live; he shall not die.’
