அக்காலத்தில்

பன்னிருவருள் ஒருவனாகிய யூதாசு இஸ்காரியோத்து தலைமைக் குருவிடம் வந்து, ‘‘இயேசுவை உங்களுக்கு நான் காட்டிக்கொடுத்தால் எனக்கு என்ன தருவீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டான். அவர்களும் முப்பது வெள்ளிக் காசுகளை எண்ணி அவனுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்கள். அதுமுதல் அவன் அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பதற்கு வாய்ப்புத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.

புளிப்பற்ற அப்ப விழாவின் முதல் நாளில் சீடர்கள் இயேசுவை அணுகி வந்து, ‘‘நீர் பாஸ்கா விருந்துண்ண நாங்கள் எங்கே ஏற்பாடு செய்யவேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், ‘‘நீங்கள் புறப்பட்டு நகருக்குள் சென்று இன்னாரிடம் போய், ‘எனது நேரம் நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது; என் சீடர்களோடு உம் வீட்டில் பாஸ்கா கொண்டாடப்போகிறேன்’ எனப் போதகர் கூறுகிறார் எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றார். இயேசு தங்களுக்குப் பணித்தபடியே சீடர்கள் செயல்பட்டுப் பாஸ்கா விருந்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்தார்கள்.

மாலை வேளையானதும் அவர் பன்னிருவரோடும் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார். அவர்கள் உண்டுகொண்டிருந்தபொழுது அவர், ‘‘உங்களுள் ஒருவன் என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் மிகவும் வருத்தமுற்றவர்களாய், ‘‘ஆண்டவரே, அது நானோ?” என ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரிடம் கேட்கத் தொடங்கினார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், ‘‘என்னுடன் பாத்திரத்தில் தொட்டு உண்பவனே என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான். மானிடமகன், தம்மைப்பற்றி மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளபடியே போகிறார். ஆனால், ஐயோ! அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கிறவனுக்குக் கேடு; அம்மனிதன் பிறவாதிருந்தால் அவனுக்கு நலமாய் இருந்திருக்கும்” என்றார். அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுத்த யூதாசும் ‘‘ரபி, நானோ?” என அவரிடம் கேட்க, இயேசு, ‘‘நீயே சொல்லிவிட்டாய்” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 26:14-25 

One of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?’ They paid him thirty silver pieces, and from that moment he looked for an opportunity to betray him.

  Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, ‘Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ ‘Go to so-and-so in the city’ he replied ‘and say to him, “The Master says: My time is near. It is at your house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples.”’ The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.

  When evening came he was at table with the twelve disciples. And while they were eating he said ‘I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me.’ They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, ‘Not I, Lord, surely?’ He answered, ‘Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me, will betray me. The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!’ Judas, who was to betray him; asked in his turn, ‘Not I, Rabbi, surely?’ ‘They are your own words’ answered Jesus.

Who thinks he has a case against me? Let him approach me.

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 50:4-9 

The Lord has given me

a disciple’s tongue.

So that I may know how to reply to the wearied

he provides me with speech.

Each morning he wakes me to hear,

to listen like a disciple.

The Lord has opened my ear.

For my part, I made no resistance,

neither did I turn away.

I offered my back to those who struck me,

my cheeks to those who tore at my beard;

I did not cover my face

against insult and spittle.

The Lord comes to my help,

so that I am untouched by the insults.

So, too, I set my face like flint;

I know I shall not be shamed.

My vindicator is here at hand. Does anyone start proceedings against me?

Then let us go to court together.

Who thinks he has a case against me?

Let him approach me.

The Lord is coming to my help,

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 13:21-33,36-38 

While at supper with his disciples, Jesus was troubled in spirit and declared, ‘I tell you most solemnly, one of you will betray me.’ The disciples looked at one another, wondering which he meant. The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus; Simon Peter signed to him and said, ‘Ask who it is he means’, so leaning back on Jesus’ breast he said, ‘Who is it, Lord?’ ‘It is the one’ replied Jesus ‘to whom I give the piece of bread that I shall dip in the dish.’ He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, ‘What you are going to do, do quickly.’ None of the others at table understood the reason he said this. Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, ‘Buy what we need for the festival’, or telling him to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. Night had fallen.

  When he had gone Jesus said:

‘Now has the Son of Man been glorified,

and in him God has been glorified.

If God has been glorified in him,

God will in turn glorify him in himself,

and will glorify him very soon.

‘My little children,

I shall not be with you much longer.

You will look for me,

And, as I told the Jews,

where I am going, you cannot come.’

Simon Peter said, ‘Lord, where are you going?’ Jesus replied, ‘Where I am going you cannot follow me now; you will follow me later.’ Peter said to him, ‘Why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.’ ‘Lay down your life for me?’ answered Jesus. ‘I tell you most solemnly, before the cock crows you will have disowned me three times.’

I will make you the light of the nations so that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 49:1-6 

Islands, listen to me,

pay attention, remotest peoples.

The Lord called me before I was born,

from my mother’s womb he pronounced my name.

He made my mouth a sharp sword,

and hid me in the shadow of his hand.

He made me into a sharpened arrow,

and concealed me in his quiver.

He said to me, ‘You are my servant (Israel)

in whom I shall be glorified’;

while I was thinking, ‘I have toiled in vain,

I have exhausted myself for nothing’;

and all the while my cause was with the Lord,

my reward with my God.

I was honoured in the eyes of the Lord,

my God was my strength.

And now the Lord has spoken,

he who formed me in the womb to be his servant,

அக்காலத்தில்

தம் சீடர்களுடன் பந்தியமர்ந்த இயேசு உள்ளம் கலங்கியவராய், “உங்களுள் ஒருவன் என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்று திட்டவட்டமாகக் கூறினார். யாரைப்பற்றி அவர் இப்படிக் கூறினார் என்று தெரியாமல் சீடர்கள் குழப்பமுற்று ஒருவரை ஒருவர் நோக்கினார்கள்.

இயேசுவின் சீடருள் ஒருவர் அவர் அருகில் அவர் மார்புப் பக்கமாய்ச் சாய்ந்திருந்தார். அவர்மேல் இயேசு அன்புகொண்டிருந்தார். சீமோன் பேதுரு அவருக்குச் சைகை காட்டி, “யாரைப்பற்றிக் கூறுகிறார் எனக் கேள்” என்றார். இயேசுவின் அருகில் அவர் மார்புப் பக்கமாய்ச் சாய்ந்திருந்த அவர், “ஆண்டவரே அவன் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நான் யாருக்கு அப்பத் துண்டைத் தோய்த்துக் கொடுக்கிறேனோ அவன்தான்” எனச் சொல்லி, அப்பத் துண்டைத் தோய்த்துச் சீமோன் இஸ்காரியோத்தின் மகனாகிய யூதாசுக்குக் கொடுத்தார். அவன் அப்பத் துண்டைப் பெற்றதும் சாத்தான் அவனுக்குள் நுழைந்தான்.

இயேசு அவனிடம், “நீ செய்ய இருப்பதை விரைவில் செய்” என்றார். இயேசு ஏன் அவனிடம் இப்படிக் கூறினார் என்பதைப் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருந்தோர் யாரும் புரிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. பணப்பை யூதாசிடம் இருந்ததால், திருவிழாவுக்குத் தேவையானதை வாங்கவோ ஏழைகளுக்கு ஏதாவது கொடுக்கவோ இயேசு அவனிடம் கூறியிருக்கலாம் என்று சிலர் நினைத்துக்கொண்டனர். யூதாசு அப்பத் துண்டைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டவுடன் வெளியே போனான். அது இரவு நேரம்.

அவன் வெளியே போனபின் இயேசு, “இப்போது மானிடமகன் மாட்சி பெற்றுள்ளார். அவர் வழியாகக் கடவுளும் மாட்சி பெற்றுள்ளார். கடவுள் அவர் வழியாக மாட்சி பெற்றாரானால் கடவுளும் தம் வழியாய் அவரை மாட்சிப்படுத்துவார்; அதையும் உடனே செய்வார். பிள்ளைகளே, இன்னும் சிறிது காலமே உங்களோடு இருப்பேன். நீங்கள் என்னைத் தேடுவீர்கள். ஆனால் நான் போகும் இடத்திற்கு உங்களால் வர இயலாது. இதையே யூதர்களுக்குச் சொன்னேன்; இப்போது உங்களுக்கும் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

சீமோன் பேதுரு இயேசுவிடம், “ஆண்டவரே, நீர் எங்கே போகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நான் போகுமிடத்திற்கு என்னைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வர இப்போது உன்னால் இயலாது; பின்னரே என்னைப் பின்தொடர்வாய்” என்றார். பேதுரு அவரிடம், “ஆண்டவரே ஏன் இப்போது நான் உம்மைப் பின்தொடர இயலாது? உமக்காக என் உயிரையும் கொடுப்பேன்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “எனக்காக உயிரையும் கொடுப்பாயோ? நீ மும்முறை என்னை மறுதலிக்குமுன் சேவல் கூவாது என உறுதியாக உனக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.
