They do not practise what they preach

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 23: 1-12.

Addressing the people and his disciples Jesus said, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses. You must therefore do what they tell you and listen to what they say; but do not be guided by what they do: since they do not practise what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they! Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader phylacteries and longer tassels, like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues, being greeted obsequiously in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi.

  ‘You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one master, and you are all brothers. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Anyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be exalted.’

We were eager to hand over to you not only the Good News but our whole lives

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to Thessalonians 2: 7-9,13 

Like a mother feeding and looking after her own children, we felt so devoted and protective towards you, and had come to love you so much, that we were eager to hand over to you not only the Good News but our whole lives as well. Let me remind you, brothers, how hard we used to work, slaving night and day so as not to be a burden on any one of you while we were proclaiming God’s Good News to you.

  Another reason why we constantly thank God for you is that as soon as you heard the message that we brought you as God’s message, you accepted it for what it really is, God’s message and not some human thinking; and it is still a living power among you who believe it.

A reading from the book of Malachi 1:14-2:2,8-10 

I am a great king, says the Lord of Hosts, and my name is feared throughout the nations. And now, priests, this warning is for you. If you do not listen, if you do not find it in your heart to glorify my name, says the Lord of Hosts, I will send the curse on you and curse your very blessing. But you, you have strayed from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your teaching. You have destroyed the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of Hosts. And so I in my turn have made you contemptible and vile in the eyes of the whole people in repayment for the way you have not kept to my paths but have shown partiality in your administration.

  Have we not all one Father? Did not one God create us? Why, then, do we break faith with one another, profaning the covenant of our ancestors?

ஓய்வு நாள் ஒன்றில் இயேசு பரிசேயர் தலைவர் ஒருவருடைய வீட்டிற்கு உணவருந்தச் சென்றிருந்தார். அங்கிருந்தோர் அவரைக் கூர்ந்து கவனித்தனர். விருந்தினர்கள் பந்தியில் முதன்மையான இடங்களைத் தேர்ந்துகொண்டதை நோக்கிய இயேசு அவர்களுக்குக் கூறிய அறிவுரை:

“ஒருவர் உங்களைத் திருமண விருந்துக்கு அழைத்திருந்தால், பந்தியில் முதன்மையான இடத்தில் அமராதீர்கள். ஒருவேளை உங்களை விட மதிப்பிற்குரிய ஒருவரையும் அவர் அழைத்திருக்கலாம். உங்களையும் அவரையும் அழைத்தவர் வந்து உங்களிடத்தில், ‘இவருக்கு இடத்தை விட்டுக்கொடுங்கள்’ என்பார். அப்பொழுது நீங்கள் வெட்கத்தோடு கடைசி இடத்திற்குப் போக வேண்டியிருக்கும். நீங்கள் அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்போது, போய்க் கடைசி இடத்தில் அமருங்கள். அப்பொழுது உங்களை அழைத்தவர் வந்து உங்களிடம், ‘நண்பரே, முதல் இடத்திற்கு வாரும்’ எனச் சொல்லும் பொழுது உங்களுடன் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருப்பவர்கள் யாவருக்கும் முன்பாக நீங்கள் பெருமை அடைவீர்கள்.

கடவுள் தம் மக்களைத் தள்ளிவிட்டார் என்று சொல்லலாமா? ஒருபோதும் இல்லை. நானும் ஓர் இஸ்ரயேலன், ஆபிரகாமின் வழிமரபினன், பென்யமின் குலத்தினன். தாம் முன்பே தேர்ந்துகொண்ட மக்களைக் கடவுள் தள்ளிவிடவில்லை. இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்கு எதிராகக் கடவுளிடம் எலியா முறையீடு செய்தது பற்றிய மறைநூல் பகுதி உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாதா?

அப்படியானால், அவர்கள் தடுமாறியது அழிந்து போவதற்கா? ஒருபோதும் இல்லை. அவர்கள் தவறு செய்ததால் யூதரல்லாதாருக்கு மீட்புக் கிடைத்தது. அவர்களிடம் பொறாமையைத் தூண்டிவிடவே இவ்வாறு ஆயிற்று. அவர்கள் தவறியதால் உலகம் அருள் வளமுற்றது; அவர்கள் வீழ்ச்சியுற்றதால் பிற இனத்தார் அருள்வளம் பெற்றனர்; அப்படியென்றால், எல்லா யூதர்களும் நற்செய்தியை ஏற்கும்போது அருள்வளம் இன்னும் மிகுதியாகும் அன்றோ?

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, நீங்கள் அறிவாளிகள் எனக் கருதாதவாறு மறைபொருள் ஒன்றை உங்களுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்த விரும்புகிறேன். அதாவது, பிற இனத்தார் முழுமையாக இறைவனிடம் வந்து சேரும் வரையில்தான் இஸ்ரயேலில் ஒரு பகுதியினர் மழுங்கிய உள்ளம் கொண்டிருப்பர். பின்னர், இஸ்ரயேல் இனம் முழுவதும் மீட்கப்படும்; “சீயோனிலிருந்து அவர் மீட்பராக வருவார்; யாக்கோபில் தீயதனைத்தையும் போக்கிடுவார். நான் அவர்களுடைய பாவங்களை அகற்றிவிடுவேன்; அவர்களுடன் நான் செய்துகொள்ளும் உடன்படிக்கை இதுவே” என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது அல்லவா!

நற்செய்தியை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாததால் அவர்கள் கடவுளுக்குப் பகைவர்கள் ஆயினர்; அதுவும் உங்களுக்கு நன்மையாய் அமைந்தது. ஆனால் அவர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களாய் இருப்பதால் அவர்களுடைய மூதாதையரை முன்னிட்டு அவரது அன்புக்கு உரியவர்கள் ஆனார்கள். ஏனெனில், கடவுள் தாம் விடுத்த அழைப்பையும் கொடுத்த அருள்கொடைகளையும் திரும்பப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை.

Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to. St.Luke 14:1,7-11 

Now on a sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. He said this, ‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’

The Jews have not fallen for ever

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 11:1-2,11-12,25-29 

Let me put a question: is it possible that God has rejected his people? Of course not. I, an Israelite, descended from Abraham through the tribe of Benjamin, could never agree that God had rejected his people, the people he chose specially long ago. Do you remember what scripture says of Elijah – how he complained to God about Israel’s behaviour? Let me put another question then: have the Jews fallen for ever, or have they just stumbled? Obviously they have not fallen for ever: their fall, though, has saved the pagans in a way the Jews may now well emulate. Think of the extent to which the world, the pagan world, has benefited from their fall and defection – then think how much more it will benefit from the conversion of them all. There is a hidden reason for all this, brothers, of which I do not want you to be ignorant, in case you think you know more than you do. One section of Israel has become blind, but this will last only until the whole pagan world has entered, and then after this the rest of Israel will be saved as well. As scripture says: The liberator will come from Zion, he will banish godlessness from Jacob. And this is the covenant I will make with them when I take their sins away.

  The Jews are enemies of God only with regard to the Good News, and enemies only for your sake; but as the chosen people, they are still loved by God, loved for the sake of their ancestors. God never takes back his gifts or revokes his choice.
