When we were baptised we went into the tomb with Christ, so that we too might live a new life

A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 6: 3-4,8-11

Brethren: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

One day Elisha went on to Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food. And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way. Let us make a small room on the roof with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there.” One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.” He said, “Call her.” And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway. And he said, “At this season, about this time next year, you shall embrace a son.”

இயேசு கப்பர்நாகுமுக்குச் சென்றபோது நூற்றுவர் தலைவர் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் உதவி வேண்டி வந்தார். “ஐயா, என் பையன் முடக்குவாதத்தால் மிகுந்த வேதனையுடன் படுத்துக் கிடக்கிறான்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நான் வந்து அவனைக் குணமாக்குவேன்” என்றார்.

நூற்றுவர் தலைவர் மறுமொழியாக, “ஐயா, நீர் என் வீட்டிற்குள் அடியெடுத்து வைக்க நான் தகுதியற்றவன். ஆனால் ஒரு வார்த்தை மட்டும் சொல்லும்; என் பையன் நலமடைவான். நான் அதிகாரத்துக்கு உட்பட்டவன். என் அதிகாரத்துக்கு உட்பட்ட படைவீரரும் உள்ளனர். நான் அவர்களுள் ஒருவரிடம் ‘செல்க’ என்றால் அவர் செல்கிறார். வேறு ஒருவரிடம் ‘வருக’ என்றால் அவர் வருகிறார். என் பணியாளரைப் பார்த்து ‘இதைச் செய்க’ என்றால் அவர் செய்கிறார்” என்றார்.

இதைக் கேட்டு இயேசு வியந்து, தம்மைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்தவர்களை நோக்கி, “உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: இஸ்ரயேலர் யாரிடமும் இத்தகைய நம்பிக்கையை நான் கண்டதில்லை. கிழக்கிலும் மேற்கிலுமிருந்து பலர் வந்து ஆபிரகாம், ஈசாக்கு, யாக்கோபு ஆகியோருடன் விண்ணரசின் பந்தியில் அமர்வர். அரசுக்கு உரியவர்களோ புறம்பாக உள்ள இருளில் தள்ளப்படுவார்கள். அங்கே அழுகையும் அங்கலாய்ப்பும் இருக்கும்” என்றார். பின்னர் இயேசு நூற்றுவர் தலைவரை நோக்கி, “நீர் போகலாம், நீர் நம்பியவண்ணமே உமக்கு நிகழும்” என்றார். அந்நேரமே பையன் குணமடைந்தான்.

இயேசு பேதுருவின் வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றபோது, பேதுருவின் மாமியார் காய்ச்சலாய்ப் படுத்திருப்பதைக் கண்டார். இயேசு அவரது கையைத் தொட்டதும் காய்ச்சல் அவரை விட்டு நீங்கிற்று. அவரும் எழுந்து இயேசுவுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்தார்.

பேய் பிடித்த பலரை மாலை வேளையில் இயேசுவிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். அவர் ஒரு வார்த்தை சொல்ல அசுத்த ஆவிகள் ஓடிப்போயின. மேலும் எல்லா நோயாளர்களையும் அவர் குணமாக்கினார். இவ்வாறு, ‘அவர் நம் பிணிகளைத் தாங்கிக்கொண்டார்; நம் துன்பங்களைச் சுமந்துகொண்டார்’ என்று இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா உரைத்தது நிறைவேறியது.

1.கடவுளே! நீர் ஏன் எங்களை முற்றிலுமாக ஒதுக்கிவிட்டீர்? உமது மேய்ச்சல் நில ஆடுகள்மேல் உமது சினம் ஏன் புகைந்தெழுகின்றது?

2.பண்டைக் காலத்திலேயே நீர் உமக்குச் சொந்தமாக்கிக் கொண்ட சபைக்கூட்டத்தை நினைத்தருளும்; நீர் மீட்டு உமக்கு உரிமையாக்கிக் கொண்ட இனத்தாரை மறந்துவிடாதேயும்; நீர் கோவில் கொண்டிருந்த சீயோன் மலையையும் நினைவுகூர்ந்தருளும்.

3.நெடுநாள்களாகப் பாழடைந்து கிடக்கும் பகுதிகளுக்குச் சென்று பார்வையிடுவீராக! எதிரிகள் உமது தூயகத்தில் அனைத்தையும் பாழ்படுத்தி விட்டார்கள்.

4.உம்முடைய எதிரிகள் உம் திருத்தலத்தில் வெற்றி முழக்கம் செய்கின்றார்கள்; தங்கள் கொடிகளை வெற்றிக்கு அடையாளமாக நாட்டுகின்றார்கள்.

சீயோன் மகளே! ஆண்டவரை நோக்கிக் கூக்குரலிடுக!

புலம்பல் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் வாசகம் 2: 2, 10-14, 18-19

ஆண்டவர் யாக்கோபின் அனைத்துக் குடியிருப்புகளையும் இரக்கமின்றி அழித்தார்; அவர் சீற்றமடைந்து மகள் யூதாவின் அரண்களைத் தகர்த்தார்; அவற்றைத் தரைமட்டமாக்கினார். அவரது நாட்டையும் அதன் தலைவர்களையும் மேன்மை குலையச் செய்தார்.

மகள் சீயோனின் பெரியோர் தரையில் மௌனமாய் அமர்ந்துள்ளனர்; அவர்கள் தங்கள் தலைமேல் புழுதியைத் தூவிக் கொண்டுள்ளனர்; சாக்கு உடை உடுத்தியுள்ளனர்; எருசலேமின் கன்னிப் பெண்கள் தங்கள் தலைகளைத் தரை மட்டும் தாழ்த்தியுள்ளனர்.

என் கண்கள் கண்ணீர் சொரிந்து சோர்ந்துள்ளன! என் குலை நடுங்குகின்றது! என் துயரத்தால் என் ஈரல் வெடித்துத் தரையில் சிதறுகின்றது!

என் மக்களாகிய மகள் நசுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளாள்! நகர் வீதிகளில் குழந்தைகளும் மழலைகளும் மயங்கிக் கிடக்கின்றனர்! அவர்கள் தங்கள் அன்னையரிடம், ‘அப்பம், திராட்சை இரசம் எங்கே?’ என்று கேட்கின்றனர்! படுகாயமுற்றோரைப் போல, நகர் வீதிகளில் அவர்கள் மயங்கி வீழ்கின்றனர்! தாய் மடியில் உயிர் விட்டவர் போல் ஆகின்றனர்!

மகளே! எருசலேம்! உன் சார்பாக நான் என்ன சொல்வேன்? உன்னை எதற்கு ஒப்பிடுவேன்? மகள் சீயோனே! கன்னிப் பெண்ணே! யாருக்கு உன்னை இணையாக்கித் தேற்றுவேன் உன்னை? உன் காயம் கடலைப் போல் விரிந்துள்ளதே! உன்னைக் குணமாக்க யாரால் முடியும்?

உன் இறைவாக்கினர் உனக்காகப் பொய்யும் புரட்டுமான காட்சிகளைக் கண்டனர்; நீ நாடுகடத்தப்பட இருப்பதைத் தவிர்க்குமாறு, உன் நெறிகேடுகளை அவர்கள் உனக்கு எடுத்துச் சொல்லவில்லை; அவர்கள் பொய்யையும் அபத்தங்களையும் காட்சியாகக் கண்டு, உனக்குப் பொய்வாக்கு உரைத்தனர்!

அவர்களின் இதயம் என் தலைவனை நோக்கிக் கூக்குரலிடுகின்றது; மகள் சீயோனின் மதிலே! இரவும் பகலும் வெள்ளமெனக் கண்ணீர் பொழி! உனக்கு ஓய்வு வேண்டாம்! கண்ணீர் விடாமல் நீ இருக்க வேண்டாம்!

எழு! இரவில் முதற் சாமத்தில் குரலெழுப்பு! உள்ளத்தில் உள்ளதை என் தலைவர் திருமுன் தண்ணீரைப் போல் ஊற்றிவிடு! தெரு முனையில் பசியால் மயங்கி விழும் குழந்தைகளின் உயிருக்காக, அவரை நோக்கி உன் கைகளை உயர்த்து!

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 8:5-17.

At that time: When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralysed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go’, and he goes, and to another, ‘Come’, and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this’, and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he marvelled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

Why, O God, have you cast us off forever? Why does your anger blaze at the sheep of your pasture? Remember your flock which you claimed long ago, the tribe you redeemed to be your own possession, this mountain of Sion where you made your dwelling.

Turn your steps to these places that are utterly ruined! The enemy has laid waste the whole of the holy place. Your foes have made uproar in the midst of your assembly; they have set up their emblems as tokens there.

A Reading from the Book of Lamentations 2:2,10-14,18-19

The Lord has swallowed up without mercy all the habitations of Jacob; in his wrath he has broken down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; he has brought down to the ground in dishonour the kingdom and its rulers. The elders of the daughter of Sion sit on the ground in silence; they have thrown dust on their heads and put on sackcloth; the young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground. My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out to the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because infants and babies faint in the streets of the city. They cry to their mothers, “Where is bread and wine?” as they faint like a wounded man in the streets of the city, as their life is poured out on their mothers’ bosom. What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Sion? For your ruin is vast as the sea; who can heal you? Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions; they have not exposed your iniquity to restore your fortunes, but have seen for you oracles that are false and misleading. Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Sion, let tears stream down like a torrent day and night! Give yourself no rest, your eyes no respite! “Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! இயேசு மலையிலிருந்து இறங்கியபின் பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தார்கள். அப்பொழுது தொழுநோயாளர் ஒருவர் வந்து அவரைப் பணிந்து, “ஐயா, நீர் விரும்பினால் எனது நோயை நீக்க உம்மால் முடியும்” என்றார். இயேசு தமது கையை நீட்டிஅவரைத் தொட்டு, “நான் விரும்புகிறேன், உமது நோய் நீங்குக!” என்று சொன்னார். உடனே அவரது தொழுநோய் நீங்கியது. இயேசு அவரிடம், “இதை எவருக்கும் சொல்ல வேண்டாம், கவனமாய் இரும். ஆனால் நீர் போய் உம்மைக் குருவிடம் காட்டி மோசே கட்டளையிட்டுள்ள காணிக்கையைச் செலுத்தும். நீர் நலமடைந்துள்ளீர் என்பதற்கு அது சான்றாகும்” என்றார்.
