A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 18: 1-5 

The disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, ‘I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.’

Rejoice, Jerusalem,

from her consoling breast,

that you may savour with delight

her glorious breasts.

For thus says the Lord:

Now towards her I send flowing

peace, like a river,

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு வேறு எழுபத்திரண்டு பேரை நியமித்து, அவர்களைத் தாம் போக இருந்த எல்லா ஊர்களுக்கும் இடங்களுக்கும் தமக்கு முன்னே இருவர் இருவராக அனுப்பினார்.

அப்போது அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “அறுவடை மிகுதி; வேலையாள்களோ குறைவு. ஆகையால் தமது அறுவடைக்குத் தேவையான வேலையாள்களை அனுப்பும்படி அறுவடையின் உரிமையாளரிடம் மன்றாடுங்கள். புறப்பட்டுப் போங்கள்; ஓநாய்களிடையே ஆட்டுக் குட்டிகளை அனுப்புவதுபோல் உங்களை நான் அனுப்புகிறேன். பணப் பையோ வேறு பையோ மிதியடிகளோ எதுவும் நீங்கள் எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டாம்; வழியில் எவருக்கும் வணக்கம் செலுத்த வேண்டாம்.

நீங்கள் எந்த வீட்டுக்குள் சென்றாலும், ‘இந்த வீட்டுக்கு அமைதி உண்டாகுக!’ என முதலில் கூறுங்கள். அமைதியை விரும்புபவர் அங்கு இருந்தால், நீங்கள் வாழ்த்திக் கூறிய அமைதி அவரிடம் தங்கும்; இல்லாவிட்டால் அது உங்களிடமே திரும்பிவிடும். அவர்களிடம் உள்ளதை நீங்கள் உண்டு குடித்து அந்த வீட்டிலேயே தங்கியிருங்கள். ஏனெனில் வேலையாளர் தம் கூலிக்கு உரிமை உடையவரே.

வீடு வீடாய்ச் செல்ல வேண்டாம். நீங்கள் செல்லும் ஊரில் உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டால் உங்களுக்குப் பரிமாறுவதை உண்ணுங்கள். அங்கு உடல் நலம் குன்றியோரைக் குணமாக்கி, இறையாட்சி அவர்களை நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்.

நீங்கள் செல்லும் ஊரில் உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாவிட்டால் அதன் வீதிகளில் சென்று, ‘எங்கள் கால்களில் ஒட்டியுள்ள உங்கள் ஊர்த் தூசியையும் உங்களுக்கு எதிராக உதறிவிடுகிறோம். ஆயினும் இறையாட்சி நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது என்பதை அறிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்’ எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்.

அந்த நாளில் அவ்வூர் பெறும் தண்டனை சோதோம் நகரினர் பெறும் தண்டனையை விடக் கடினமாகவே இருக்கும் என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

மக்கள் அனைவரும், ஒரே ஆளென, தண்ணீர் வாயிலுக்கு எதிரே இருந்த வளாகத்தில் ஒன்றுகூடினர். ஆண்டவர் இஸ்ரயேலுக்குக் கொடுத்த மோசேயின் திருநூலைக் கொண்டுவருமாறு திருநூல் வல்லுநர் எஸ்ராவை வேண்டினர். அவ்வாறே ஏழாம் மாதம் முதல் நாள் குரு எஸ்ரா ஆடவர், பெண்டிர், புரிந்து கொள்ளும் ஆற்றலுள்ள சிறுவர் அனைவரும் அடங்கிய சபை முன்னிலையில் திருநூலைக் கொண்டு வந்தார். தண்ணீர் வாயிலுக்கு முன் இருந்த வளாகத்தில் காலை முதல் நண்பகல் வரை ஆடவரையும், பெண்டிரையும், புரிந்துகொள்ளும் ஆற்றலுள்ள சிறுவரையும் பார்த்து அதை உரக்க வாசித்தார். எல்லா மக்களும் திருநூலுக்குச் செவிகொடுத்தனர்.

திருநூல் வல்லுநரான எஸ்ராவோ இதற்காகச் செய்யப்பட்ட மரமேடையின்மேல் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார். எஸ்ரா மக்களை விட உயரமான இடத்தில் நின்றதால் அவர் திருநூலைத் திறந்தபோது எல்லா மக்களும் அதைப் பார்த்தார்கள்; திருநூலைத் திறந்தபோது எல்லா மக்களும் எழுந்து நின்றார்கள். அப்பொழுது எஸ்ரா மாபெரும் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரை வாழ்த்தினார். மக்கள் எல்லாரும் கைகளை உயர்த்தி “ஆமென்!ஆமென்!” என்று பதிலுரைத்தார்கள்; பணிந்து, முகங்குப்புற விழுந்து ஆண்டவரைத் தொழுதார்கள். மக்கள் அங்கேயே நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். மக்களுக்குப் புரியும்படி தெளிவாகவும், பொருளோடும் கடவுளின் திருச்சட்டத்தை உரக்க வாசித்தார்கள். ஆதலால் மக்களும் வாசிக்கப்பட்டதன் பொருளைப் புரிந்து கொண்டனர்.

ஆளுநர் நெகேமியாவும், குருவும் திருநூல் வல்லுநருமான எஸ்ராவும், விளக்கம் கூறிய லேவியர்களும் மக்கள் அனைவரையும் நோக்கி: “இன்று கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரின் புனித நாள்; எனவே நீங்கள் அழுது புலம்ப வேண்டாம்” என்றனர். ஏனெனில் மக்கள் அனைவரும் திருச்சட்டத்தின் சொற்களைக் கேட்டதிலிருந்து அழுது கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

அவர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நீங்கள் போய்க் கொழுத்தவற்றை உண்டு, இனிய திராட்சை இரசத்தைக் குடியுங்கள்; எதுவும் தயார் செய்யாதவருக்குச் சிறிது அனுப்பிவையுங்கள். ஏனென்றால், நம் ஆண்டவரின் புனித நாள் இதுவே; எனவே வருந்த வேண்டாம்; ஏனெனில் ஆண்டவரின் மகிழ்வே உங்களது வலிமை” என்று கூறினார்.

எனவே லேவியர் எல்லா மக்களையும் நோக்கி, “அமைதியாய் இருங்கள்; ஏனெனில் இன்று புனித நாள், துயரம் கொள்ளாதீர்கள்” எனச் சொல்லி அழுகையை அமர்த்தினார்கள். எல்லா மக்களும் அவர்களுக்குக் கூறப்பட்ட வார்த்தைகளைப் புரிந்து கொண்டதால், உண்ணவும், குடிக்கவும், உணவு அனுப்பவும், மகிழ்ச்சி கொண்டாடவும் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார்கள்.

The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.” But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say, “We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. A Reading from the Book of Nehemiah 8: 1-12.

When the seventh month came, all the people gathered as one man on the square before the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses which the Lord had prescribed for Israel. Accordingly Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, consisting of men, women, and children old enough to understand. This was the first day of the seventh month. On the square before the Water Gate, in the presence of the men and women, and children old enough to understand, he read from the book from early morning till noon; all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

  Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden dais erected for the purpose. In full view of all the people – since he stood higher than all the people – Ezra opened the book; and when he opened it all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people raised their hands and answered, ‘Amen! Amen!’ Then they bowed down and, face to the ground, prostrated themselves before the Lord. And Ezra read from the Law of God, translating and giving the sense, so that the people understood what was read.

  Then Nehemiah – His Excellency – and Ezra, priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people, said to all the people, ‘This day is sacred to the Lord your God. Do not be mournful, do not weep.’ For the people were all in tears as they listened to the words of the Law.

  He then said, ‘Go, eat the fat, drink the sweet wine, and send a portion to the man who has nothing prepared ready. For this day is sacred to our Lord. Do not be sad: the joy of the Lord is your stronghold.’ And the Levites calmed all the people, saying, ‘Be at ease; this is a sacred day. Do not be sad.’ And all the people went off to eat and drink and give shares away and begin to enjoy themselves since they had understood the meaning of what had been proclaimed to them.

நத்தனியேல் தம்மிடம் வருவதை இயேசு கண்டு, “இவர் உண்மையான இஸ்ரயேலர், கபடற்றவர்” என்று அவரைக் குறித்துக் கூறினார். நத்தனியேல், “என்னை உமக்கு எப்படித் தெரியும்?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார். இயேசு, “பிலிப்பு உம்மைக் கூப்பிடுவதற்கு முன்பு நீர் அத்திமரத்தின் கீழ் இருந்தபோதே நான் உம்மைக் கண்டேன்” என்று பதிலளித்தார். நத்தனியேல் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “ரபி, நீர் இறைமகன்; நீரே இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் அரசர்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “உம்மை அத்தி மரத்தின் கீழ் கண்டேன் என்று உம்மிடம் சொன்னதாலா நம்புகிறீர்? இதை விடப் பெரியவற்றைக் காண்பீர்” என்றார். மேலும் “வானம் திறந்திருப்பதையும் கடவுளின் தூதர்கள் மானிடமகன் மீது ஏறுவதையும் இறங்குவதையும் காண்பீர்கள் என மிக உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார்.
