The kingdom of God is a mustard seed growing into the biggest shrub of all

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark 4: 26-34 

Jesus said to the crowds: ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces fir

st the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’

  He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’

  Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.

2 Samuel 11: 1-4,5-10,13-17 

At the turn of the year, the time when kings go campaigning, David sent Joab and with him his own guards and the whole of Israel. They massacred the Ammonites and laid siege to Rabbah. David, however, remained in Jerusalem.

  It happened towards evening when David had risen from his couch and was strolling on the palace roof, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful. David made inquiries about this woman and was told, ‘Why, that is Bathsheba, Eliam’s daughter, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.’ Then David sent messengers and had her brought. She came to him, and he slept with her. She then went home again. The woman conceived and sent word to David; ‘I am with child.’

  Then David sent Joab a message, ‘Send me Uriah the Hittite’, whereupon Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came into his presence, David asked after Joab and the army and how the war was going. David then said to Uriah, ‘Go down to your house and enjoy yourself.’ Uriah left the palace, and was followed by a present from the king’s table. Uriah however slept by the palace door with his master’s bodyguard and did not go down to his house.

  This was reported to David; ‘

Uriah’ they said ‘did not go down to his house.’ The next day David invited him to eat and drink in his presence and made him drunk. In the evening Uriah went out and lay on his couch with his master’s bodyguard, but he did not go down to his house.

  Next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by Uriah. In the letter he wrote, ‘Station Uriah in the thick of the fight and then fall back behind him so that he may be struck down and die.’ Joab, then besieging the town, posted Uriah in a place where he knew there were fierce fighters. The men of the town sallied out and engaged Joab; the army suffered casualties, including some of David’s bodyguard; and Uriah the Hittite was killed too.

ஏனெனில், உள்ளவருக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; இல்லாதவரிடமிருந்து உள்ளதும் எடுக்கப்படும்” என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

தாவீது ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் வந்து அமர்ந்து இவ்வாறு பேசினார்: “என் தலைவராம் ஆண்டவரே! இதுவரை நீர் என்னை வழிநடத்தி வந்தமைக்கு, நான் யார்? என் குடும்பம் யாது? இருப்பினும் என் தலைவராம் ஆண்டவரே, உம் திருமுன் இது சிறிதே. உம் ஊழியனின் குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றிய எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றியும் நீர் பேசியுள்ளீர்! என் தலைவராம் ஆண்டவரே, மனித வழக்கம் இதுவல்லவே!

என்றும் உம் மக்களாகவே நிலைத்து இருக்குமாறு இஸ்ரயேலரை நீர் உமக்குரியவர் ஆக்கினீர்! ஆண்டவரே! நீரே அவர்களின் கடவுள் ஆனீர்! ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுளே! உமது ஊழியனைப் பற்றியும் அவனது குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றியும் நீர் தந்த உறுதிமொழியை என்றும் நிலைநாட்டும்! நீர் வாக்குறுதி அளித்தவாறே செய்யும்! உமது பெயர் என்றும் மாட்சி பெறுவதாக! அப்பொழுது மாந்தர் ‘படைகளின் ஆண்டவரே இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுள்’ என்பர். உமது ஊழியன் தாவீதின் குடும்பமும் உம் திருமுன் நிலைத்திருக்கும்.

ஏனெனில், படைகளின் ஆண்டவரே! இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளே! ‘நான் உனக்கு ஓர் இல்லம் எழுப்புவேன்’ என்று உமது ஊழியனுக்கு வெளிப்படுத் தியவர் நீரே! ஆகவே இவ்வாறு மன்றாட உம் ஊழியனுக்கு மனத் துணிவு ஏற்பட்டது. தலைவராம் ஆண்டவரே! நீரே கடவுள்! உமது வார்த்தைகள் நம்பிக்கைக்கு உரியவை!

Jesus said to the crowd, ‘Would you bring in a lamp to put it under a tub or under the bed? Surely you will put it on the lamp-stand? For there is nothing hidden but it must be disclosed, nothing kept secret except to be brought to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to this.’

  He also said to them, ‘Take notice of what you are hearing. The amount you measure out is the amount you will be given – and more besides; for the man who has will be given more; from the man who has not, even what he has will be taken away.’

After Nathan had spoken to him, King David went in and, seated before the Lord, said: ‘Who am I, O Lord, and what is my House, that you have led me as far as this? Yet in your sight, O Lord, this is still not far enough, and you make your promises extend to the House of your servant for a far-distant future. You have constituted your people Israel to be your own people for ever; and you, Lord, have become their God.

  ‘Now, O Lord, always keep the promise you have made your servant and his House, and do as you have said. Your name will be exalted for ever and men will say, “The Lord of Hosts is God over Israel.” The House of your servant David will be made secure in your presence, since you yourself, Lord of Hosts, God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, “I will build you a House”; hence your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you. ஆண்டவர் வேறு எழுபத்திரண்டு பேரை நியமித்து, அவர்களைத் தாம் போக இருந்த எல்லா ஊர்களுக்கும் இடங்களுக்கும் தமக்கு முன்னே இருவர் இருவராக அனுப்பினார்.

அப்போது அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “அறுவடை மிகுதி; வேலையாள்களோ குறைவு. ஆகையால் தமது அறுவடைக்குத் தேவையான வேலையாள்களை அனுப்பும்படி அறுவடையின் உரிமையாளரிடம் மன்றாடுங்கள். புறப்பட்டுப் போங்கள்; ஓநாய்களிடையே ஆட்டுக் குட்டிகளை அனுப்புவதுபோல் உங்களை நான் அனுப்புகிறேன். பணப் பையோ வேறு பையோ மிதியடிகளோ எதுவும் நீங்கள் எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டாம்; வழியில் எவருக்கும் வணக்கம் செலுத்த வேண்டாம்.

நீங்கள் எந்த வீட்டுக்குள் சென்றாலும், ‘இந்த வீட்டுக்கு அமைதி உண்டாகுக!’ என முதலில் கூறுங்கள். அமைதியை விரும்புபவர் அங்கு இருந்தால், நீங்கள் வாழ்த்திக் கூறிய அமைதி அவரிடம் தங்கும்; இல்லாவிட்டால் அது உங்களிடமே திரும்பிவிடும்.

அவர்களிடம் உள்ளதை நீங்கள் உண்டு குடித்து அந்த வீட்டிலேயே தங்கியிருங்கள். ஏனெனில் வேலையாளர் தம் கூலிக்கு உரிமை உடையவரே.

வீடு வீடாய்ச் செல்ல வேண்டாம். நீங்கள் செல்லும் ஊரில் உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டால் உங்களுக்குப் பரிமாறுவதை உண்ணுங்கள். அங்கு உடல் நலம் குன்றியோரைக் குணமாக்கி, இறையாட்சி அவர்களை நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்.”
