A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 16: 21–27

At that time: Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.”

I appeal to you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

O Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughing-stock all the day; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name”, there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கடவுளுடைய இரக்கத்தை முன்னிட்டு உங்களை வேண்டுகிறேன்: கடவுளுக்கு உகந்த, தூய, உயிருள்ள பலியாக உங்களைப் படையுங்கள். இதுவே நீங்கள் செய்யும் உள்ளார்ந்த வழிபாடு. இந்த உலகத்தின் போக்கின்படி ஒழுகாதீர்கள். மாறாக, உங்கள் உள்ளம் புதுப்பிக்கப்பெற்று மாற்றம் அடைவதாக! அப்போது கடவுளின் திருவுளம் எது எனத் தேர்ந்து தெளிவீர்கள். எது நல்லது, எது உகந்தது, எது நிறைவானது என்பதும் உங்களுக்குத் தெளிவாகத் தெரியும்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தாம் எருசலேமுக்குப் போய் மூப்பர்கள், தலைமைக் குருக்கள், மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள் ஆகியோரால் பலவாறு துன்பப்படவும் கொலை செய்யப்படவும் மூன்றாம் நாள் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படவும் வேண்டும் என்பதைத் தம் சீடருக்கு அந்நேரம் முதல் எடுத்துரைக்கத் தொடங்கினார்.

பேதுரு அவரைத் தனியே அழைத்துக் கடிந்து கொண்டு, “ஆண்டவரே, இது வேண்டாம். இப்படி உமக்கு நடக்கவே கூடாது” என்றார். ஆனால் இயேசு பேதுருவைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, “என் கண்முன் நில்லாதே சாத்தானே, நீ எனக்குத் தடையாய் இருக்கிறாய்; ஏனெனில் நீ கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்றவைபற்றி எண்ணாமல் மனிதருக்கு ஏற்றவை பற்றியே எண்ணுகிறாய்” என்றார்.

பின்பு இயேசு தம் சீடரைப் பார்த்து, “என்னைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து, தம் சிலுவையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றட்டும். ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்துவிடுவர். மாறாக, என் பொருட்டுத் தம்மையே அழித்துக் கொள்கிற எவரும் வாழ்வடைவார். மனிதர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் ஆதாயமாக்கிக்கொண்டாலும் தம் வாழ்வையே இழப்பாரெனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன? அவர் தம் வாழ்வுக்கு ஈடாக எதைக் கொடுப்பார்?

மானிட மகன் தம் தந்தையின் மாட்சியோடு தம் வானதூதர்களுடன் வரப் போகிறார்; அப்பொழுது ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அவரவர் செயலுக்கேற்பக் கைம்மாறு அளிப்பார்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு என்னை பழிச்சொல்லுக்கும் நகைப்புக்கும் ஆளாக்கியது.

இறைவாக்கினர் எரேமியா நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 20: 7-9

ஆண்டவரே! நீர் என்னை ஏமாற்றிவிட்டீர்; நானும் ஏமாந்து போனேன்; நீர் என்னைவிட வல்லமையுடையவர்; என்மேல் வெற்றி கொண்டுவிட்டீர்; நான் நாள் முழுவதும் நகைப்புக்கு ஆளானேன். எல்லாரும் என்னை ஏளனம் செய்கின்றார்கள். நான் பேசும்போதெல்லாம் ‘வன்முறை அழிவு’ என்றே கத்த வேண்டியுள்ளது; ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு என்னை நாள் முழுதும் பழிச்சொல்லுக்கும் நகைப்புக்கும் ஆளாக்கியது.

“அவர் பெயரைச் சொல்ல மாட்டேன்; அவர் பெயரால் இனிப் பேசவும் மாட்டேன்” என்பேனாகில், உம் சொல் என் இதயத்தில் பற்றியெரியும் தீ போல இருக்கின்றது. அது என் எலும்புகளுக்குள் அடைபட்டுக் கிடக்கின்றது. அதனை அடக்கிவைத்துச் சோர்ந்து போனேன்; இனி என்னால் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ள முடியாது.
