மலைமேல் ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் வந்து நில்.

அரசர்கள் முதல் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 19: 9a, 11-16

அந்நாள்களில்

எலியா அங்கிருந்த குகைக்கு வந்து, அதில் இரவைக் கழித்தார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர், “வெளியே வா; மலைமேல் என் திருமுன் வந்து நில். இதோ! ஆண்டவராகிய நான் கடந்து செல்ல இருக்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

உடனே ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் பெரும் சுழற்காற்று எழுந்து மலைகளைப் பிளந்து பாறைகளைச் சிதறடித்தது. ஆனால் ஆண்டவர் அந்தக் காற்றில் இல்லை. காற்றுக்குப் பின் நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. நிலநடுக்கத்திலும் ஆண்டவர் இருக்கவில்லை. நிலநடுக்கத்திற்குப் பின் தீ கிளம்பிற்று. தீயிலும் ஆண்டவர் இருக்கவில்லை. தீக்குப்பின் அடக்கமான மெல்லிய ஒலி கேட்டது.

அதை எலியா கேட்டவுடன் போர்வையினால் தம் முகத்தை மூடிக்கொண்டு வெளியே வந்து குகையின் வாயிலில் நின்றார். அப்பொழுது, “எலியா, நீ இங்கே என்ன செய்கிறாய்?” என்று ஒரு குரல் கேட்டது. அதற்கு அவர், “படைகளின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர்மீது நான் பேரார்வம் கொண்டவனாய் இருந்து வருகிறேன். ஆனால் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் உமது உடன்படிக்கையை உதறிவிட்டனர்; உம் பலி பீடங்களைத் தகர்த்து விட்டனர்; உம் இறைவாக்கினரை வாளால் கொன்று விட்டனர். நான் ஒருவன் மட்டுமே எஞ்சியிருக்க, என் உயிரையும் பறிக்கத் தேடுகின்றனர்” என்றார்.

அப்போது ஆண்டவர் அவரிடம், “நீ வந்த வழியே திரும்பித் தமஸ்குப் பாலைநிலம் நோக்கிச் செல். அவ்விடத்தை அடைந்தவுடன் அசாவேலைச் சிரியாவுக்கு மன்னனாகத் திருப்பொழிவு செய். நிம்சியின் மகன் ஏகூவை இஸ்ரயேலுக்கு அரசனாகத் திருப்பொழிவு செய். ஆபேல் மெகோலாவைச் சார்ந்த சாபாற்றின் மகன் எலிசாவை உனக்குப் பதிலாக இறைவாக்கினராக அருள்பொழிவு செய்” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 5: 27-32 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must not commit adultery. But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye should cause you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body thrown into hell. And if your right hand should cause you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body go to hell.

  ‘It has also been said: Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal. But I say this to you: everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.’

When Elijah reached Horeb, the mountain of God, he went into the cave and spent the night in it. Then he was told, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ Then the Lord himself went by. There came a mighty wind, so strong it tore the mountains and shattered the rocks before the Lord. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there came the sound of a gentle breeze. And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then a voice came to him, which said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He replied, ‘I am filled with jealous zeal for the Lord of Hosts, because the sons of Israel have deserted you, broken down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one left and they want to kill me.’

  ‘Go,’ the Lord said, ‘go back by the same way to the wilderness of Damascus. You are to go and anoint Hazael as king of Aram. You are to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king of Israel, and to anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel Meholah, as prophet to succeed you.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “மறைநூல் அறிஞர், பரிசேயர் ஆகியோரின் நெறியைவிட உங்கள் நெறி சிறந்திருக்கட்டும். இல்லையெனில், நீங்கள் விண்ணரசுக்குள் புக முடியாது என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்.

‘கொலை செய்யாதே; கொலை செய்கிறவர் எவரும் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவர்’ என்று முற்காலத்தவர்க்குக் கூறப்பட்டிருப்பதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: தம் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளிடம் சினங்கொள்கிறவர் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவார்; தம் சகோதரரையோ சகோதரியையோ ‘முட்டாளே’ என்பவர் தலைமைச் சங்கத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவார்; ‘அறிவிலியே’ என்பவர் எரிநரகத்துக்கு ஆளாவார்.

ஆகையால் நீங்கள் உங்கள் காணிக்கையைப் பலிபீடத்தில் செலுத்த வரும்பொழுது உங்கள் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள் எவருக்கும் உங்கள் மேல் ஏதோ மனத்தாங்கல் உண்டென அங்கே நினைவுற்றால், அங்கேயே பலி பீடத்தின்முன் உங்கள் காணிக்கையை வைத்துவிட்டுப் போய் முதலில் அவரிடம் நல்லுறவு ஏற்படுத்திக் கொள்ளுங்கள். பின்பு வந்து உங்கள் காணிக்கையைச் செலுத்துங்கள்.

உங்கள் எதிரி உங்களை நீதி மன்றத்துக்குக் கூட்டிச் செல்லும்போது வழியிலேயே அவருடன் விரைவாக உடன்பாடு செய்துகொள்ளுங்கள். இல்லையேல் உங்கள் எதிரி நடுவரிடம் உங்களை ஒப்படைப்பார். நடுவர் காவலரிடம் ஒப்படைக்க, நீங்கள் சிறையில் அடைக்கப்படுவீர்கள். கடைசிக் காசு வரை திருப்பிச் செலுத்தாமல் அங்கிருந்து வெளியேற மாட்டீர்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

எலியா ஆகாபை நோக்கி, “நீர் போய் உணவும் பானமும் அருந்துவீர். ஏனெனில் பெருமழையின் ஓசை கேட்கிறது” என்றார். ஆகாபு உணவும் பானமும் அருந்தச் சென்றவுடன், எலியா கர்மேல் மலையின் உச்சிக்கு ஏறிச் சென்று, அங்கே தரையில் மண்டியிட்டுத் தம் முழங்கால்களுக்கு இடையே முகத்தைப் புதைத்துக்கொண்டார். பின்பு அவர் தம் பணியாளனை நோக்கி, “நீ போய்க் கடல் பக்கமாய்ப் பார்” என்றார். அவன் போய்ப் பார்த்து, “ஒன்றும் இல்லை” என்றான். எலியா அவனை நோக்கி, “ஏழுமுறை மீண்டும் சென்று பார்” என்றார்.

ஏழாம் முறை அவன் சென்று பார்த்து, “இதோ, மனித உள்ளங்கையளவு சிறிய மேகம் ஒன்று கடலிலிருந்து எழும்பி மேலே வருகிறது” என்றான். அப்போது எலியா அவனை நோக்கி, “நீ போய் ஆகாபிடம், மழை தடுத்து நிறுத்தாதபடி தேரைப் பூட்டிப் போய்விடும்படி சொல்” என்றார்.

இதற்கிடையில் வானம் இருண்டது; கார்மேகம் சூழ்ந்தது. காற்று அடித்தது. பெரும் மழை பெய்தது. ஆகாபு தேரில் ஏறி இஸ்ரியேலுக்குச் சென்றான். அந்நேரத்தில் ஆண்டவரின் ஆற்றல் எலியாவின்மேல் வந்திறங்க, அவர் தம் இடையை வரிந்து கட்டிக்கொண்டு, இஸ்ரியேல் வரை ஆகாபுக்கு முன்னே ஓடினார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 5: 20-26 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.’

'A cloud no bigger than a man's hand'

1 Kings 18: 41-46 

Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go back, eat and drink; for I hear the sound of rain.’ While Ahab went back to eat and drink, Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to the earth, putting his face between his knees. ‘Now go up,’ he told his servant ‘and look out to the sea.’ He went up and looked. ‘There is nothing at all’ he said. ‘Go back seven times’ Elijah said. The seventh time, the servant said, ‘Now there is a cloud, small as a man’s hand, rising from the sea.’ Elijah said, ‘Go and say to Ahab, “Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you.”’ And with that the sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fell in torrents. Ahab mounted his chariot and made for Jezreel. The hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and tucking up his cloak he ran in front of Ahab as far as the outskirts of Jezreel.
