அந்நாள்களில்

நாபோத்து இறந்தபின், திஸ்பேயரான எலியாவுக்கு ஆண்டவர் உரைத்த வாக்கு: “நீ புறப்பட்டு, சமாரியாவிலிருந்து ஆட்சிசெய்யும் இஸ்ரயேலின் அரசன் ஆகாபைப் போய்ப் பார். அவன் நாபோத்தின் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தைத் தன் உடைமையாக்கிக் கொள்ள அங்குப் போயிருக்கிறான். நீ அவனிடம் சொல்ல வேண்டியது: ஆண்டவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்: நீ கொலை செய்து, கொள்ளையடித்திருக்கிறாய் இல்லையா? எனவே, நீ அவனிடம் சொல்ல வேண்டியது. ஆண்டவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்: நாய்கள் நாபோத்தின் இரத்தத்தை நக்கிய அதே இடத்தில் அவை உனது இரத்தத்தையும் நக்கும்.” அப்போது ஆகாபு எலியாவை நோக்கி, “என் எதிரியே! என்னைக் கண்டுபிடித்து விட்டாயா?” என்று கேட்டான்.

அதற்கு அவர், “ஆம், நான் கண்டுபிடித்துவிட்டேன். ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் தீயதெனப்பட்டதைச் செய்யும் அளவுக்கு உன்னையே விற்றுவிட்டாய். இதோ! நான் உனக்குத் தீங்கு வரச் செய்வேன். உனது வழிமரபை ஒழித்து விடுவேன். உரிமை மக்களாயினும், அடிமைகள் ஆயினும், இஸ்ரயேல் ஆண்மக்களை ஆகாபிடமிருந்து வெட்டி எறிவேன். நெபாற்றின் மகன் எரோபவாமின் குடும்பத்திற்குச் செய்ததுபோல், உன் குடும்பத்திற்கும் செய்வேன். ஏனெனில் நீ இஸ்ரயேலைப் பாவத்திற்கு உள்ளாக்கி எனக்குப் பெருஞ்சினம் மூட்டினாய்.

மேலும் ஈசபேலைக் குறித்து ஆண்டவர் சொல்வது: இஸ்ரியேலின் மதிலருகே நாய்கள் ஈசபேலைத் தின்னும். ஆகாபைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் நகரினுள் மடிந்தால், நாய்களுக்கு இரையாவர்; நகர்ப்புறத்தே இறந்தால், வானத்துப் பறவைகளுக்கு இரையாவர்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் தீயதெனப்பட்டதைச் செய்யுமளவுக்குத் தன்னையே விற்றுவிட்ட ஆகாபைப் போல் கெட்டவன் எவனும் இருந்ததில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவனுடைய மனைவி ஈசபேல் அவனைத் தூண்டி விட்டாள். மேலும், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் முன்னிலையிலிருந்து ஆண்டவர் விரட்டியடித்த எமோரியர் செய்துகொண்ட சிலைகளை எல்லாம் வழிபடும் அளவுக்கு அவன் மிகவும் இழிவாக நடந்து கொண்டான்.

அச்சொற்களை ஆகாபு கேட்டவுடன் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்டு வெற்றுடல்மீது சாக்கு உடை உடுத்தி, நோன்பு காத்துச் சாக்குத் துணிமீது படுத்தான்; பணிவோடு நடந்துகொண்டான். அப்பொழுது திஸ்பேயரான எலியாவுக்கு ஆண்டவர் உரைத்த வாக்கு: “என் திருமுன் ஆகாபு தன்னைத் தாழ்த்திக் கொண்டதைக் கண்டாயன்றோ? அவன் என் திருமுன் தன்னைத் தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டதால் நான் அவன் வாழ்நாளின்போது தீமை வரச் செய்யாமல், அவனுடைய மகனது வாழ்நாளின்போது அவனுடைய குடும்பத்தாரின் மேல் தீமை விழச்செய்வேன்.”

But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; in this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike. For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.’

The punishment of Ahab and Jezebel foretold

1 Kings 21: 17-29 

After the death of Naboth, the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, ‘Up! Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, in Samaria. You will find him in Naboth’s vineyard; he has gone down to take possession of it. You are to say this to him, “The Lord says this: You have committed murder; now you usurp as well. For this – and the Lord says this – in the place where the dogs licked the blood of Naboth, the dogs will lick your blood too.”’

  Ahab said to Elijah, ‘So you have found me out, O my enemy!’ Elijah answered, ‘I have found you out. For your double dealing, and since you have done what is displeasing to the Lord, I will now bring disaster down on you; I will sweep away your descendants, and wipe out every male belonging to the family of Ahab, fettered or free in Israel. I will treat your House as I treated the House of Jeroboam son of Nebat and of Baasha son of Ahijah, for provoking my anger and leading Israel into sin. (Against Jezebel the Lord spoke these words: The dogs will eat Jezebel in the Field of Jezreel.) Those of Ahab’s family who die in the city, the dogs will eat; and those who die in the open country, the birds of the air will eat.’

  And indeed there never was anyone like Ahab for double dealing and for doing what is displeasing to the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the most abominable way, adhering to idols, just as the Amorites used to do whom the Lord had dispossessed for the sons of Israel.

  When Ahab heard these words, he tore his garments and put sackcloth next his skin and fasted; he slept in the sackcloth; he walked with slow steps. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, ‘Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Since he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; I will bring the disaster down on his House in the days of his son.’

அந்நாள்களில்

இஸ்ரயேலனாகிய நாபோத்துக்கு இஸ்ரயேலில், சமாரிய அரசன் ஆகாபின் அரண்மனை அருகில், ஒரு திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் இருந்தது. ஆகாபு நாபோத்திடம், “உன் திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் என் அரண்மனை அருகில் இருப்பதால், நான் அதைக் காய்கறித் தோட்டம் ஆக்கும்படி என்னிடம் கொடுத்துவிடு. அதற்குப் பதிலாய் அதைவிட நல்ல திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை உனக்குத் தருவேன். உனக்கு விருப்பமானால், அதன் விலையை வெள்ளியாகத் தருகிறேன்” என்றான்.

அதற்கு நாபோத்து ஆகாபிடம், “என் மூதாதையரின் உரிமைச் சொத்தை நான் உமக்குக் கொடாதவாறு ஆண்டவர் என்னைக் காப்பாராக!” என்றான். “என் மூதாதையரின் உரிமைச் சொத்தை உமக்குக் கொடுக்க மாட்டேன்” என்று இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்து தன்னிடம் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளை முன்னிட்டு, ஆகாபு ஆத்திரத்துடனும் கோபத்துடனும் தன் அரண்மனைக்கு வந்தான்; முகத்தைத் திருப்பிக் கொண்டு தன் கட்டிலில் படுத்துக்கிடந்தான்; உணவருந்த மறுத்துவிட்டான்.

அப்போது அவனுடைய மனைவி ஈசபேல் அவனிடம் வந்து, “நீர் ஏன் மனம் சோர்ந்திருக்கிறீர்? ஏன் உணவருந்தவில்லை?” என்று அவனைக் கேட்டாள். அதற்கு அவன் அவளிடம், “நான் இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்திடம் பேசினேன். ‘உன் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை அதற்கான வெள்ளிக்கு எனக்குக் கொடுத்துவிடு. உனக்கு விருப்பமானால், அதற்குப் பதிலாக வேறு திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தைத் தருவேன்’ என்றேன். அதற்கு அவன் ‘என் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை உமக்குத் தர மாட்டேன்’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டான்” என்றான். அப்போது அவன் மனைவி ஈசபேல் அவனை நோக்கி, “இஸ்ரயேலின் அரசராகிய நீர் இப்படியா நடந்துகொள்வது? எழுந்திருந்து உணவருந்தி மனமகிழ்வாய் இரும். இஸ்ரியேலனாகிய நாபோத்தின் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தை நானே உம்மிடம் ஒப்படைக்கிறேன்” என்றாள்.

எனவே அவள் ஆகாபின் பெயரால் மடல்கள் எழுதி, அவற்றில் அவனது முத்திரையைப் பொறித்து, அம்மடல்களை நாபோத்துடன் நகரில் குடியிருந்த பெரியோருக்கும் உயர்குடி மக்களுக்கும் அனுப்பினாள். அம்மடல்களில் அவள், “நீங்கள் ஒரு நோன்பு அறிவித்து நாபோத்தை மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் அமரச் செய்யுங்கள். அவனுக்கு எதிராய் இழி மனிதர் இருவரை ஏவிவிட்டு, ‘நீ கடவுளையும் அரசரையும் பழித்துரைத்தாய்’ என்று அவன் மீது குற்றம் சாட்டச் செய்யுங்கள். பின்னர் அவனை வெளியே கொண்டு போய்க் கல்லால் எறிந்து கொன்றுபோடுங்கள்” என்று எழுதியிருந்தாள்.

நாபோத்துடன் அந்நகரில் குடியிருந்த பெரியோரும் உயர்குடி மக்களும் ஈசபேல் தமக்கு அனுப்பிய மடல்களில் எழுதி இருந்தவாறே செய்தனர். அவர்கள் ஒரு நோன்பு அறிவித்து, நாபோத்தை மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் அமர்த்தினர். அப்பொழுது அந்த இழி மனிதர் இருவரும் வந்து நாபோத்துக்கு எதிரே உட்கார்ந்தனர். அந்த இழி மனிதர் மக்களைப் பார்த்து, “நாபோத்து கடவுளையும் அரசரையும் பழித்துரைத்தான்” என்று அவன் மீது குற்றம் சாட்டினர். எனவே, அவர்கள் அவனை நகருக்கு வெளியே கொண்டு போய்க் கல்லால் எறிந்து கொன்றனர்.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I say this to you: offer the wicked man no resistance. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the right cheek, offer him the other as well; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.’

1 Kings 21: 1-16 

Naboth of Jezreel had a vineyard close by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria, and Ahab said to Naboth, ‘Give me your vineyard to be my vegetable garden, since it adjoins my house; I will give you a better vineyard for it or, if you prefer, I will give you its worth in money.’ But Naboth answered Ahab, ‘The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors!’

  Ahab went home gloomy and out of temper at the words of Naboth of Jezreel, ‘I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.’ He lay down on his bed and turned his face away and refused to eat. His wife Jezebel came to him. ‘Why are you so dispirited’ she said ‘that you will not eat?’ He said, ‘I have been speaking to Naboth of Jezreel; I said: “Give me your vineyard either for money or, if you prefer, for another vineyard in exchange.” But he said, “I will not give you my vineyard.”’ Then his wife Jezebel said, ‘You make a fine king of Israel, and no mistake! Get up and eat; cheer up, and you will feel better; I will get you the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel myself.’

  So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, sending them to the elders and nobles who lived where Naboth lived. In the letters she wrote, ‘Proclaim a fast, and put Naboth in the forefront of the people. Confront him with a couple of scoundrels who will accuse him like this, “You have cursed God and the king.” Then take him outside and stone him to death.’

  The men of Naboth’s town, the elders and nobles who lived in his town, did what Jezebel ordered, what was written in the letters she had sent them. They proclaimed a fast and put Naboth in the forefront of the people. Then the two scoundrels came and stood in front of him and made their accusation, ‘Naboth has cursed God and the king.’ They led him outside the town and stoned him to death. They then sent word to Jezebel, ‘Naboth has been stoned to death.’ When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, ‘Get up! Take possession of the vineyard which Naboth of Jezreel would not give you for money, for Naboth is no longer alive, he is dead.’ When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel and take possession of it.
