இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 35: 1-10

பாலைநிலமும் பாழ்வெளியும் அகமகிழும்; பொட்டல் நிலம் அக்களிப்படைந்து, லீலிபோல் பூத்துக்குலுங்கும். அது வளமாய்ப் பூத்துக் குலுங்கி மகிழ்ந்து பாடிக் களிப்படையும்; லெபனோனின் எழில் அதற்கு அளிக்கப்படும்; கர்மேல், சாரோனின் மேன்மை அதில் ஒளிரும்; ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சியையும் நம் கடவுளின் பெருமையையும் அவர்கள் காண்பார்கள்.

தளர்ந்துபோன கைகளைத் திடப்படுத்துங்கள்; தள்ளாடும் முழங்கால்களை உறுதிப்படுத்துங்கள். உள்ளத்தில் உறுதியற்றவர்களை நோக்கி, “திடன் கொள்ளுங்கள், அஞ்சாதிருங்கள்; இதோ, உங்கள் கடவுள் பழிதீர்க்க வருவார்; அநீதிக்குப் பழிவாங்கும் கடவுளாக வந்து உங்களை விடுவிப்பார்.”

அங்கே! நெடுஞ்சாலை ஒன்று இருக்கும்; அது ‘தூய வழி’ என்று பெயர் பெறும். தீட்டுப்பட்டோர் அதன் வழியாய்க் கடந்து செல்லார்; அவ்வழி வரும் பேதையரும் வழி தவறிச் செல்லார். அங்கே சிங்கம் இராது; அவ்வழியில் கொடிய விலங்குகள் செல்வதில்லை, காணப்படுவதுமில்லை; மீட்படைந்தவர்களே அவ்வழியில் நடப்பார்கள். ஆண்டவரால் விடுவிக்கப்பட்டோர் திரும்பி வருவர்; மகிழ்ந்து பாடிக்கொண்டே சீயோனுக்கு வருவர்; அவர்கள் முகம் என்றும் உள்ள மகிழ்ச்சியால் மலர்ந்திருக்கும்; அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியும் பூரிப்பும் அடைவார்கள்; துன்பமும் துயரமும் பறந்தோடும்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 5:17-26 

Jesus was teaching one day, and among the audience there were Pharisees and doctors of the Law who had come from every village in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem. And the Power of the Lord was behind his works of healing. Then some men appeared, carrying on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring in and lay down in front of him. But as the crowd made it impossible to find a way of getting him in, they went up on to the flat roof and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith he said, ‘My friend, your sins are forgiven you.’ The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. ‘Who is this man talking blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’ But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, ‘What are these thoughts you have in your hearts? Which of these is easier: to say, “Your sins are forgiven you” or to say, “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he said to the paralysed man – ‘I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.’ And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and went home praising God.

  They were all astounded and praised God, and were filled with awe, saying, ‘We have seen strange things today.’

The return of the redeemed through the desert

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 35:1-10 

Let the wilderness and the dry-lands exult,

let the wasteland rejoice and bloom,

let it bring forth flowers like the jonquil,

let it rejoice and sing for joy.

The glory of Lebanon is bestowed on it,

the splendour of Carmel and Sharon;

they shall see the glory of the Lord,

the splendour of our God.

Strengthen all weary hands,

steady all trembling knees

and say to all faint hearts,

‘Courage! Do not be afraid.

‘Look, your God is coming,

vengeance is coming,

the retribution of God;

he is coming to save you.’

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

the ears of the deaf unsealed,

then the lame shall leap like a deer

and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy;

for water gushes in the desert,

streams in the wasteland,

the scorched earth becomes a lake,

the parched land springs of water.

The lairs where the jackals used to live

அக்காலத்தில்

திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் யூதேயாவின் பாலைநிலத்துக்கு வந்து, “மனம் மாறுங்கள், ஏனெனில் விண்ணரசு நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது” என்று பறைசாற்றி வந்தார்.

இவரைக் குறித்தே, “பாலைநிலத்தில் குரல் ஒன்று முழங்குகிறது; ஆண்டவருக்காக வழியை ஆயத்தமாக்குங்கள்; அவருக்காகப் பாதையைச் செம்மையாக்குங்கள்” என்று இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா உரைத்துள்ளார். இந்த யோவான் ஒட்டக முடியாலான ஆடையை அணிந்திருந்தார்; தோல் கச்சையை இடையில் கட்டி இருந்தார்; வெட்டுக்கிளியும் காட்டுத் தேனும் உண்டு வந்தார். எருசலேமிலும் யூதேயா முழுவதிலும் யோர்தான் ஆற்றை அடுத்துள்ள பகுதிகள் அனைத்திலும் இருந்தவர்கள் அவரிடம் சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள் தங்கள் பாவங்களை அறிக்கையிட்டு யோர்தான் ஆற்றில் அவரிடம் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்று வந்தார்கள்.

பரிசேயர், சதுசேயருள் பலர் தம்மிடம் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற வருவதைக் கண்டு அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “விரியன் பாம்புக் குட்டிகளே, வரப்போகும் சினத்திலிருந்து தப்பிக்க இயலும் என உங்களிடம் சொன்னவர் யார்? நீங்கள் மனம் மாறியவர்கள் என்பதை அதற்கேற்ற செயல்களால் காட்டுங்கள். ‘ஆபிரகாம் எங்களுக்குத் தந்தை’ என உங்களிடையே சொல்லிப் பெருமை கொள்ள வேண்டாம். இக்கற்களிலிருந்தும் ஆபிரகாமுக்குப் பிள்ளைகளைத் தோன்றச் செய்யக் கடவுள் வல்லவர் என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். ஏற்கெனவே மரங்களின் வேரருகே கோடரி வைத்தாயிற்று. நற்கனி தராத மரங்கள் எல்லாம் வெட்டப்பட்டுத் தீயில் போடப்படும்.

நீங்கள் மனம் மாறுவதற்காக நான் தண்ணீரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறேன், எனக்குப் பின் ஒருவர் வருகிறார். அவர் என்னைவிட வலிமை மிக்கவர். அவருடைய மிதியடிகளைத் தூக்கிச் செல்லக்கூட எனக்குத் தகுதி இல்லை. அவர் தூய ஆவி என்னும் நெருப்பால் உங்களுக்குத் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுப்பார். அவர் சுளகைத் தம் கையில் கொண்டு கோதுமையையும் பதரையும் பிரித்தெடுப்பார்; தம் கோதுமையைக் களஞ்சியத்தில் சேர்ப்பார்; ஆனால், பதரை அணையா நெருப்பிலிட்டுச் சுட்டெரிப்பார்” என்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

முற்காலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்டவை அனைத்தும் நமக்கு அறிவுரையாகவே எழுதப்பட்டன. மறைநூல் தரும் மன உறுதியினாலும் ஊக்கத்தினாலும் நமக்கு எதிர்நோக்கு உண்டாகிறது. கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் முன்மாதிரிக்கு ஏற்ப நீங்கள் ஒரே மனத்தினராய் இருக்குமாறு மன உறுதியையும் ஊக்கத்தையும் தரும் கடவுள் உங்களுக்கு அருள்புரிவாராக! இவ்வாறு நீங்கள் அனைவரும் ஒருமனப்பட்டு, நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் கடவுளும் தந்தையுமானவரை ஒருவாய்ப்படப் போற்றிப் புகழ்வீர்கள்.

ஆகையால், கிறிஸ்து உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டது போல நீங்களும் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள். அப்போது கடவுளைப் பெருமைப்படுத்துவீர்கள். என் கருத்து இதுவே. கடவுள் உண்மையுள்ளவர் என்பதைக் காட்டுமாறு கிறிஸ்து விருத்தசேதனம் செய்துகொண்டவர்களுக்குத் தொண்டர் ஆனார். மூதாதையருக்குத் தரப்பட்ட வாக்குறுதிகளை உறுதிப்படுத்தவும், பிற இனத்தார் கடவுளுடைய இரக்கத்தைப் பார்த்து அவரைப் போற்றிப் புகழவும் இவ்வாறு தொண்டர் ஆனார். ஆகவே, “பிற இனத்தாரிடையே உம்மைப் போற்றுவேன்; உமது பெயருக்குப் புகழ்மாலை சாற்றுவேன்” என இதைக் குறித்து மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது.

ஈசாய் என்னும் அடிமரத்திலிருந்து தளிர் ஒன்று துளிர் விடும்; அதன் வேர்களிலிருந்து கிளை ஒன்று வளர்ந்து கனி தரும். ஆண்டவரின் ஆவி அவர்மேல் தங்கியிருக்கும்; ஞானம், மெய்யுணர்வு, அறிவுரைத்திறன், ஆற்றல், நுண்மதி, ஆண்டவரைப்பற்றிய அச்ச உணர்வு - இவற்றை அந்த ஆவி அவருக்கு அருளும். அவரும் ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்பதில் மகிழ்ந்திருப்பார்.

The one who follows me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 3:1-12 

In due course John the Baptist appeared; he preached in the wilderness of Judaea and this was his message: ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’ This was the man the prophet Isaiah spoke of when he said:

A voice cries in the wilderness:

Prepare a way for the Lord,

make his paths straight.

This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins. But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, ‘Brood of vipers, who warned you to fly from the retribution that is coming? But if you are repentant, produce the appropriate fruit, and do not presume to tell yourselves, “We have Abraham for our father,” because, I tell you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones. Even now the axe is laid to the roots of the trees, so that any tree which fails to produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown on the fire. I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who follows me is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to carry his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fan is in his hand; he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out.’

Christ is the saviour of all men

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 15:4-9 

  

Everything that was written long ago in the scriptures was meant to teach us something about hope from the examples scripture gives of how people who did not give up were helped by God. And may he who helps us when we refuse to give up, help you all to be tolerant with each other, following the example of Christ Jesus, so that united in mind and voice you may give glory to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  It can only be to God’s glory, then, for you to treat each other in the same friendly way as Christ treated you. The reason Christ became the servant of circumcised Jews was not only so that God could faithfully carry out the promises made to the patriarchs, it was also to get the pagans to give glory to God for his mercy, as scripture says in one place: For this I shall praise you among the pagans and sing to your name.
