Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 9: 30-37 

Jesus and his disciples made their way through Galilee; and he did not want anyone to know, because he was instructing his disciples; he was telling them, ‘The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men; they will put him to death; and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again.’ But they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him.

  They came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’ They said nothing because they had been arguing which of them was the greatest. So he sat down, called the Twelve to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all.’ He then took a little child, set him in front of them, put his arms round him, and said to them, ‘Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.’

The chosen are tested like gold in the fire

Ecclesiasticus 2:1-11 

My son, if you aspire to serve the Lord,

  prepare yourself for an ordeal.

Be sincere of heart, be steadfast,

  and do not be alarmed when disaster comes.

Cling to him and do not leave him,

  so that you may be honoured at the end of your days.

Whatever happens to you, accept it,

  and in the uncertainties of your humble state, be patient,

since gold is tested in the fire,

  and chosen men in the furnace of humiliation.

Trust him and he will uphold you,

  follow a straight path and hope in him.

You who fear the Lord, wait for his mercy;

  do not turn aside in case you fall.

You who fear the Lord, trust him,

  and you will not be baulked of your reward.

You who fear the Lord hope for good things,

  for everlasting happiness and mercy.

Look at the generations of old and see:

  who ever trusted in the Lord and was put to shame?

Or who ever feared him steadfastly and was left forsaken?

  Or who ever called out to him, and was ignored?

For the Lord is compassionate and merciful,

  he forgives sins, and saves in days of distress.

அக்காலத்தில்

பேதுரு, யாக்கோபு, யோவான் ஆகிய மூவரும் மற்ற சீடரிடம் வந்தபொழுது, பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் அவர்களைச் சூழ்ந்திருப்பதையும் மறை நூல் அறிஞர் அவர்களுடன் வாதாடுவதையும் கண்டனர். மக்கள் அனைவரும் இயேசுவைக் கண்ட உடனே மிக வியப்புற்று அவரிடம் ஓடிப்போய் அவரை வாழ்த்தினர். அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் இவர்களோடு எதைப் பற்றி வாதாடுகிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அப்போது கூட்டத்திலிருந்து ஒருவர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “போதகரே, தீய ஆவி பிடித்துப் பேச்சிழந்த என் மகனை உம்மிடம் கொண்டு வந்தேன். அது அவனைப் பிடித்து அந்த இடத்திலேயே அவனைக் கீழே தள்ளுகிறது. அவன் வாயில் நுரை தள்ளிப் பற்களை நெரிக்கிறான்; உடம்பும் விறைத்துப் போகிறது. அதை ஓட்டிவிடும்படி நான் உம் சீடரிடம் கேட்டேன்; அவர்களால் இயலவில்லை” என்று கூறினார்.

அதற்கு அவர் அவர்களிடம், “நம்பிக்கையற்ற தலைமுறையினரே, எவ்வளவு காலம் நான் உங்களோடு இருக்க இயலும்? எவ்வளவு காலம் நான் உங்களைப் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ள இயலும்? அவனை என்னிடம் கொண்டு வாருங்கள்” என்று கூறினார். அவர்கள் அவனை அவரிடம் கொண்டுவந்தார்கள். அவரைக் கண்டவுடன் அந்த ஆவி அவனுக்கு வலிப்பு உண்டாக்க, அவன் தரையில் விழுந்து புரண்டான்; வாயில் நுரை தள்ளியது.

அவர் அவனுடைய தந்தையைப் பார்த்து, “இது இவனுக்கு வந்து எவ்வளவு காலமாயிற்று?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர், “குழந்தைப் பருவத்திலிருந்து இது இருந்து வருகிறது. இவனை ஒழித்துவிடத் தீயிலும் தண்ணீரிலும் பல முறை அந்த ஆவி இவனைத் தள்ளியதுண்டு. உம்மால் ஏதாவது செய்ய இயலுமானால் எங்கள்மீது பரிவு கொண்டு எங்களுக்கு உதவி செய்யும்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “இயலுமானாலா? நம்புகிறவருக்கு எல்லாம் நிகழும்” என்றார். உடனே அச்சிறுவனின் தந்தை, “நான் நம்புகிறேன். என் நம்பிக்கையின்மை நீங்க உதவும்” என்று கதறினார்.

அப்போது மக்கள் கூட்டம் தம்மிடம் ஓடிவருவதை இயேசு கண்டு, அந்தத் தீய ஆவியை அதட்டி, “ஊமைச் செவிட்டு ஆவியே, உனக்குக் கட்டளையிடுகிறேன்: இவனை விட்டுப் போ; இனி இவனுள் நுழையாதே” என்றார். அது அலறி அவனுக்கு மிகுந்த வலிப்பு உண்டாக்கி வெளியேறியது. அச்சிறுவன் செத்தவன் போலானான். ஆகவே அவர்களுள் பலர், “அவன் இறந்துவிட்டான்” என்றனர். இயேசு அவன் கையைப் பிடித்துத் தூக்கிவிட்டார். அவனும் எழுந்தான்.

அவர் வீட்டில் நுழைந்ததும் அவருடைய சீடர் அவரிடம் தனிமையாக வந்து, “அதை ஏன் எங்களால் ஓட்ட இயலவில்லை?” என்று கேட்டனர். அதற்கு அவர், “இவ்வகைப் பேய் இறைவேண்டலினாலும் நோன்பினாலும் அன்றி வேறு எதனாலும் வெளியேறாது” என்றார்.

ஞானமெல்லாம் ஆண்டவரிடம் இருந்தே வருகின்றது; அது என்றும் அவரோடு இருக்கின்றது.

கடல் மணலையோ மழைத் துளியையோ முடிவில்லாக் காலத்தையோ யாரே கணக்கிடுவர்? வான்வெளியின் உயரத்தையோ நிலவுலகின் அகலத்தையோ ஆழ்கடலையோ ஞானத்தையோ யாரே தேடிக் காண்பர்?

எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் முன்னர் ஞானமே உண்டாக்கப்பட்டது; கூர்மதி கொண்ட அறிவுத்திறன் என்றென்றும் உள்ளது. உயர்வானில் உள்ள கடவுளின் வாக்கே ஞானத்தின் ஊற்று; என்றுமுள கட்டளைகளே அதை அடையும் வழிகள்.

ஞானத்தின் ஆணிவேர் யாருக்கு வெளியிடப்பட்டது? அதன் நுணுக்கங்களை அறிந்தவர் எவர்? ஞானத்தின் அறிவாற்றல் யாருக்குத் தெளிவாக்கப்பட்டது? அதன் பரந்த பட்டறிவைப் புரிந்துகொண்டவர் யார்? ஆண்டவர் ஒருவரே ஞானியாவார்; தம் அரியணையில் வீற்றிருக்கும் அவர் பெரிதும் அச்சத்திற்கு உரியவர்.

அவரே ஞானத்தைப் படைத்தவர்; அதனைக் கண்டு கணக்கிட்டவர்; தம் வேலைப்பாடுகளை எல்லாம் அதனால் நிரப்பியவர். தம் ஈகைக்கு ஏற்ப எல்லா உயிர்களுக்கும் அவரே அதைக் கொடுத்துள்ளார்; தம்மீது அன்புகூர்வோருக்கு அதை வாரி வழங்கியுள்ளார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 9: 14-29 

When Jesus, with Peter, James and John came down from the mountain and rejoined the disciples, they saw a large crowd round them and some scribes arguing with them. The moment they saw him the whole crowd were struck with amazement and ran to greet him. ‘What are you arguing about with them?’ he asked. A man answered him from the crowd, ‘Master, I have brought my son to you; there is a spirit of dumbness in him, and when it takes hold of him it throws him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and goes rigid. And I asked your disciples to cast it out and they were unable to.’ ‘You faithless generation’ he said to them in reply. ‘How much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.’ They brought the boy to him, and as soon as the spirit saw Jesus it threw the boy into convulsions, and he fell to the ground and lay writhing there, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the father, ‘How long has this been happening to him?’ ‘From childhood,’ he replied ‘and it has often thrown him into the fire and into the water, in order to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us.’ ‘If you can?’ retorted Jesus. ‘Everything is possible for anyone who has faith.’ Immediately the father of the boy cried out, ‘I do have faith. Help the little faith I have!’ And when Jesus saw how many people were pressing round him, he rebuked the unclean spirit. ‘Deaf and dumb spirit,’ he said ‘I command you: come out of him and never enter him again.’ Then throwing the boy into violent convulsions it came out shouting, and the boy lay there so like a corpse that most of them said, ‘He is dead.’ But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up, and he was able to stand. When he had gone indoors his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why were we unable to cast it out?’ ‘This is the kind’ he answered ‘that can only be driven out by prayer.’

Before all other things, wisdom was created

Ecclesiasticus 1:1-10 

All wisdom is from the Lord,

  and it is his own for ever.

The sand of the sea and the raindrops,

  and the days of eternity, who can assess them?

The height of the sky and the breadth of the earth,

  and the depth of the abyss, who can probe them?

Before all other things wisdom was created,

  shrewd understanding is everlasting.

For whom has the root of wisdom ever been uncovered?

  Her resourceful ways, who knows them?

One only is wise, terrible indeed,

  seated on his throne, the Lord.

He himself has created her, looked on her and assessed her,

  and poured her out on all his works

to be with all mankind as his gift,

  and he conveyed her to those who love him.
