Happy the man who fears the Lord.

Alleluia!

Happy the man who fears the Lord,

who takes delight in all his commands.

His sons will be powerful on earth;

the children of the upright are blessed.

Happy the man who fears the Lord.

Alleluia!

Riches and wealth are in his house;

his justice stands firm for ever.

He is a light in the darkness for the upright:

he is generous, merciful and just.

Happy the man who fears the Lord.

The good man takes pity and lends,

he conducts his affairs with honour.

Tobit defies the law by burying the dead

A Reading from the Book of Tobit 1:3, 2:1-8

I, Tobit, have walked in paths of truth and in good works all the days of my life. I have given much in alms to my brothers and fellow countrymen, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria.

At our feast of Pentecost (the feast of Weeks) there was a good dinner. I took my place for the meal; the table was brought to me and various dishes were brought. Then I said to my son Tobias, ‘Go, my child, and seek out some poor, loyal-hearted man among our brothers exiled in Nineveh, and bring him to share my meal. I will wait until you come back, my child.’ So Tobias went out to look for some poor man among our brothers, but he came back again and said, ‘Father!’ I answered, ‘What is it, my child?’ He went on, ‘Father, one of our nation has just been murdered; he has been strangled and then thrown down in the market place; he is there still.’ I sprang up at once, left my meal untouched, took the man from the market place and laid him in one of my rooms, waiting until sunset to bury him. I came in again and washed myself and ate my bread in sorrow, remembering the words of the prophet Amos concerning Bethel:

Your feasts will be turned to mourning,

and all your songs to lamentation.

And I wept. When the sun was down, I went and dug a grave and buried him. My neighbours laughed and said, ‘See! He is not afraid any more.’ (You must remember that a price had been set on my head earlier for this very thing.) ‘The time before this he had to flee, yet here he is, beginning to bury the dead again.’

உலகை மீட்கவே கடவுள் தம் மகனை உலகிற்கு அனுப்பினார்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு நிக்கதேமுவிடம் கூறியது: “தம் ஒரே மகன்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளும் எவரும் அழியாமல் நிலைவாழ்வு பெறும் பொருட்டு அந்த மகனையே அளிக்கும் அளவுக்குக் கடவுள் உலகின்மேல் அன்புகூர்ந்தார். உலகிற்குத் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பளிக்க அல்ல, தம் மகன் வழியாக அதை மீட்கவே கடவுள் அவரை உலகிற்கு அனுப்பினார். அவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்வோர் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவதில்லை; ஆனால் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளாதோர் ஏற்கெனவே தீர்ப்புப் பெற்றுவிட்டனர். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் கடவுளின் ஒரே மகனிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளவில்லை.”

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 13: 11-13

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

இறுதியாக நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்வது: மகிழ்ச்சியாய் இருங்கள்; உங்கள் நடத்தையைச் சீர்ப்படுத்துங்கள்; என் அறிவுரைக்குச் செவிசாயுங்கள்; மன ஒற்றுமை கொண்டிருங்கள்; அமைதியுடன் வாழுங்கள்; அப்போது அன்பும் அமைதியும் அளிக்கும் கடவுள் உங்களோடு இருப்பார்.

தூய முத்தம் கொடுத்து ஒருவரை ஒருவர் வாழ்த்துங்கள். இங்குள்ள இறைமக்கள் அனைவரும் உங்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துக் கூறுகிறார்கள்.

ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் அருளும் கடவுளின் அன்பும் தூய ஆவியாரின் நட்புறவும் உங்கள் அனைவரோடும் இருப்பதாக!

அந்நாள்களில் ஆண்டவர் தமக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டபடி மோசே அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து சீனாய் மலைமேல் ஏறிச் சென்றார். தம் கையில் இரு கற்பலகைகளையும் கொண்டு போனார்.

ஆண்டவர் மேகத்தில் இறங்கி வந்து, அங்கே அவர் பக்கமாய் நின்று கொண்டு, ‘ஆண்டவர்’ என்ற பெயரை அறிவித்தார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர் அவர் முன்னிலையில் கடந்து செல்கையில், “ஆண்டவர்! ஆண்டவர்; இரக்கமும் பரிவும் உள்ள இறைவன்; சினம் கொள்ளத் தயங்குபவர்; பேரன்புமிக்கவர்; நம்பிக்கைக்குரியவர்” என அறிவித்தார். உடனே மோசே விரைந்து தரைமட்டும் தாழ்ந்து வணங்கி,

“என் தலைவரே! நான் உண்மையிலேயே உம் பார்வையில் தயை பெற்றவன் என்றால், இவர்கள் வணங்காக் கழுத்துள்ள மக்கள் எனினும், என் தலைவரே! நீர் எங்களோடு வந்தருளும். எங்கள் கொடுமையையும் எங்கள் பாவத்தையும் மன்னித்து எங்களை உம் உரிமைச் சொத்தாக்கிக் கொள்ளும்” என்றார்.

Jesus said to Nicodemus:

‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son,

so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost

but may have eternal life.

For God sent his Son into the world

not to condemn the world,

but so that through him the world might be saved.

No one who believes in him will be condemned;

but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already,

because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son.’

Brothers, we wish you happiness; try to grow perfect; help one another. Be united; live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Greet one another with the holy kiss. All the saints send you greetings.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
