பணிப்பெண்ணின் மகன், என் மகன் ஈசாக்குடன் பங்காளியாய் இருக்கக்கூடாது.

தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 21: 5, 8-20

ஆபிரகாமுக்கு ஈசாக்கு பிறந்தபொழுது அவருடைய வயதோ நூறு. அந்தக் குழந்தை வளர்ந்து பால் குடியும் மறந்தது. அப்படிப் பால் குடிப்பதை நிறுத்திய நாளன்று ஆபிரகாம் பெரியதொரு விருந்து அளித்தார்.

பின்னர் எகிப்தியளான ஆகார் ஆபிரகாமுக்குப் பெற்றெடுத்த மகன் சிரித்து விளையாடுவதைச் சாரா கண்டு, ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “இந்தப் பணிப் பெண்ணையும் அவள் மகனையும் துரத்திவிடும். ஏனென்றால், பணிப் பெண்ணின் மகன் என் மகன் ஈசாக்குடன் பங்காளியாய் இருக்கக்கூடாது” என்றார். தம் மகனுக்கு எதிரான இவ்வார்த்தை ஆபிரகாமுக்கு மிகுந்த வேதனை அளித்தது.

அப்போது கடவுள் ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “பையனையும் பணிப் பெண்ணையும் குறித்து வேதனைப்படாதே. சாரா உனக்குச் சொல்வதை எல்லாம் அப்படியே செய். ஏனெனில் ஈசாக்கின் மூலமே உன் வழி மரபு விளங்கும். உன் பணிப் பெண்ணின் மகனும் உன் வித்தாய் இருப்பதால், அவனிடமிருந்தும் இனம் ஒன்று தோன்றச் செய்வேன்” என்றார்.

எனவே ஆபிரகாம் காலையில் எழுந்து, அப்பத்தையும், தோற்பை நிறையத் தண்ணீரையும் எடுத்து ஆகாரிடம் கொடுத்தார்; அவற்றை அவள் தோள்மேல் வைத்து குழந்தையையும் அவளுடன் அனுப்பி வைத்தார். அவளும் புறப்பட்டுப் போய் பெயேர்செபா என்னும் பாலை நிலத்தில் அலைந்து திரிந்தாள். தோற்பையிலிருந்த தண்ணீர் தீர்ந்தபின் அவள் புதர் ஒன்றின் அடியில் குழந்தையைக் கிடத்தினாள். பின்பு அவள் முன்புறம் சென்று அம்புஎறி தூரத்தளவில் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டாள். ‘குழந்தை சாவதைப் பார்க்கச் சகியேன்’ என்று கூறி, முன்புறமிருந்து கொண்டே கூக்குரலிட்டு அழுதாள்.

அப்போது கடவுள் பையனின் அழுகுரலைக் கேட்டார். ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் வானத்தினின்று ஆகாரைக் கூப்பிட்டு, “ஆகார்! உனக்கு நிகழ்ந்தது என்ன? அஞ்சாதே. ஏனெனில், கிடத்தியிருக்கிற இடத்தினின்று பையனின் அழுகுரலை கடவுள் கேட்டருளினார். நீ எழுந்து பையனைத் தூக்கி விடு. அவனை உன் கையில் பிடித்துக்கொள். ஏனெனில், அவனிடமிருந்து பெரிய இனம் ஒன்று தோன்றச் செய்வேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது கடவுள் அவள் கண்களைத் திறந்துவிட, அவள் நீருள்ள கிணற்றைக் கண்டாள். அவள் அங்குச் சென்று தோற்பையை நீரால் நிரப்பிப் பையனுக்குக் குடிக்கக் கொடுத்தாள். கடவுளும் பையனோடு இருந்தார். அவன் வளர்ந்து பாலை நிலத்தில் குடியிருந்தான். அம்பு எய்வதில் வல்லவன் ஆனான்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 8:28-34 

When Jesus reached the country of the Gadarenes on the other side of the lake, two demoniacs came towards him out of the tombs – creatures so fierce that no one could pass that way. They stood there shouting, ‘What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the time?’ Now some distance away there was a large herd of pigs feeding, and the devils pleaded with Jesus, ‘If you cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’ And he said to them, ‘Go then’, and they came out and made for the pigs; and at that the whole herd charged down the cliff into the lake and perished in the water. The swineherds ran off and made for the town, where they told the whole story, including what had happened to the demoniacs. At this the whole town set out to meet Jesus; and as soon as they saw him they implored him to leave the neighbourhood.

A Reading from the book of Genesis 21:5,8-20 

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham gave a great banquet on the day Isaac was weaned. Now Sarah watched the son that Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. ‘Drive away that slave-girl and her son,’ she said to Abraham; ‘this slave-girl’s son is not to share the inheritance with my son Isaac.’ This greatly distressed Abraham because of his son, but God said to him, ‘Do not distress yourself on account of the boy and your slave-girl. Grant Sarah all she asks of you, for it is through Isaac that your name will be carried on. But the slave-girl’s son I will also make into a nation, for he is your child too.’ Rising early next morning Abraham took some bread and a skin of water and, giving them to Hagar, he put the child on her shoulder and sent her away.

  She wandered off into the wilderness of Beersheba. When the skin of water was finished she abandoned the child under a bush. Then she went and sat down at a distance, about a bowshot away, saying to herself, ‘I cannot see the child die.’ So she sat at a distance; and the child wailed and wept.

  But God heard the boy wailing, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. ‘What is wrong, Hagar?’ he asked. ‘Do not be afraid, for God has heard the boy’s cry where he lies. Come, pick up the boy and hold him safe, for I will make him into a great nation.’ Then God opened Hagar’s eyes and she saw a well, so she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

  God was with the boy. He grew up and made his home in the wilderness, and he became a bowman.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு படகில் ஏறவே, அவருடைய சீடர்களும் அவரோடு ஏறினார்கள். திடீரெனக் கடலில் பெருங் கொந்தளிப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. படகுக்குமேல் அலைகள் எழுந்தன. ஆனால் இயேசு தூங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். சீடர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, காப்பாற்றும், சாகப் போகிறோம்” என்று சொல்லி அவரை எழுப்பினார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நம்பிக்கை குன்றியவர்களே, ஏன் அஞ்சுகிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டு, எழுந்து காற்றையும் கடலையும் கடிந்து கொண்டார். உடனே மிகுந்த அமைதி உண்டாயிற்று.

மக்கள் எல்லாரும், “காற்றும் கடலும் இவருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகின்றனவே! இவர் எத்தகையவரோ?” என்று வியந்தனர்.

அந்நாள்களில்

பொழுது விடியும் வேளையில் தூதர்கள் லோத்தை நோக்கி, “நீ எழுந்திரு! உன் மனைவியையும், உன் இரு புதல்வியரையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு போ! இல்லையேல், இந்நகரின் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பில் நீயும் அகப்பட்டு அழிவாய்” என்று வற்புறுத்திக் கூறினார்கள். அவர் காலந்தாழ்த்தினார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவர் மீது இரக்கம் வைத்திருந்ததால், அந்த மனிதர்கள் அவரது கையையும், அவர் மனைவியின் கையையும், அவர் இரு புதல்வியர் கையையும் பிடித்துக் கொண்டுபோய் நகருக்கு வெளியே விட்டார்கள். அவர்களை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்தவுடன் அந்த மனிதர்கள் அவரை நோக்கி, “நீ உயிர் தப்புமாறு ஓடிப்போ; திரும்பிப் பார்க்காதே; சமவெளி எங்கேயும் தங்காதே; மலையை நோக்கித் தப்பி ஓடு; இல்லையேல் அழிந்து போவாய்” என்றார்கள். லோத்து அவர்களை நோக்கி: “என் தலைவர்களே, வேண்டாம். உங்கள் அடியானுக்கு உங்கள் பார்வையில் இரக்கம் கிடைத்துள்ளது. என் உயிரைக் காக்கும் பொருட்டு நீர் காட்டிய பேரன்பு உயர்ந்தது. ஆயினும் மலையை நோக்கித் தப்பியோட என்னால் இயலாது. ஓடினால் தீங்கு ஏற்பட்டு, நான் செத்துப் போவேன். எனவே, நான் தப்பியோடிச் சேர்வதற்கு வசதியாக, இதோ ஒரு நகர் அருகிலுள்ளது. அது சிறியதாய் இருக்கிறது. அதற்குள் ஓடிப்போக விடுங்கள். அது சிறிய நகர் தானே? நானும் உயிர் பிழைப்பேன்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு தூதர் ஒருவர், “நல்லது, அப்படியே ஆகட்டும். இக்காரியத்திலும் உனக்குக் கருணை காட்டியுள்ளேன். நீ கேட்டபடி அந்நகரை நான்அழிக்க மாட்டேன். நீ அங்கு விரைந்தோடித் தப்பித்துக் கொள். நீ அங்குச் சென்று சேருமட்டும் என்னால் ஒன்றும் செய்ய இயலாது” என்றார். இதனால் அந்த நகருக்குச் “சோவார்” என்னும் பெயர் வழங்கிற்று.

லோத்து சோவாரை அடைந்தபோது கதிரவன் மண்ணுலகின் மேல் உதித்திருந்தான். அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர் வானத்திலிருந்து சோதோம், கொமோரா நகர்களின்மேல் கந்தகமும் நெருப்பும் பொழியச் செய்தார். அந்நகரங்களையும் அவற்றைச் சுற்றியிருந்த சமவெளி முழுவதையும் அழித்தார். நகர்களில் வாழ்ந்த அனைவரையும், நிலத்தில் தளிர்த்தனவற்றையும் அழித்தார். அப்பொழுது லோத்தின் மனைவி திரும்பிப் பார்த்தாள். உடனே உப்புத் தூணாக மாறினாள்.

ஆபிரகாம் காலையில் எழுந்திருந்து, தாம் ஏற்கெனவே ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் நின்ற இடத்திற்குப் போனார். அவர் சோதோமையும் கொமோராவையும் சூழ்ந்திருந்த நிலப்பகுதியையும் நோக்கிப் பார்த்தபோது சூளையின் புகைபோல நிலப்பரப்பிலிருந்து புகை கிளம்பக் கண்டார்.

கடவுள் சமவெளி நகர்களை அழித்தபோது, ஆபிரகாமை நினைவு கூர்ந்தார். எனவே லோத்து குடியிருந்த நகர்களை அழித்தபோது கடவுள் அவரைக் காப்பாற்றினார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 8: 23-27

Jesus got into the boat followed by his disciples. Without warning a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the waves were breaking right over the boat. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you men of little faith?’ And with that he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and all was calm again. The men were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.’

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 19:15-29 

The angels urged Lot, ‘Come, take your wife and these two daughters of yours, or you will be overwhelmed in the punishment of the town.’ And as he hesitated, the men took him by the hand, and his wife and his two daughters, because of the pity the Lord felt for him. They led him out and left him outside the town.

  As they were leading him out he said, ‘Run for your life. Neither look behind you nor stop anywhere on the plain. Make for the hills if you would not be overwhelmed.’ ‘No, I beg you, my lord,’ Lot said to them ‘your servant has won your favour and you have shown great kindness to me in saving my life. But I could not reach the hills before this calamity overtook me, and death with it. The town over there is near enough to flee to, and is a little one. Let me make for that – is it not little? – and my life will be saved.’ He answered, ‘I grant you this favour too, and will not destroy the town you speak of. Hurry, escape to it, for I can do nothing until you reach it.’ That is why the town is named Zoar.

  As the sun rose over the land and Lot entered Zoar, the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord. He overthrew these towns and the whole plain, with all the inhabitants of the towns, and everything that grew there. But the wife of Lot looked back, and was turned into a pillar of salt.

  Rising early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the Lord, and looking towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and across all the plain, he saw the smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

  Thus it was that when God destroyed the towns of the plain, he kept Abraham in mind and rescued Lot out of disaster when he overwhelmed the towns where Lot lived.
